How does my MMC prove himself to the FMC?

So. Let me set this up:

It's a sci-fi romance. The MMC is the cloned, memory-imprinted double of a wealthy guy. The guy is old, and when he dies, there's a succession: the clone who is the closest match, based on a brain scan, legally becomes the wealthy guy -- inheriting the wealth, power, etc.

Now, it's going to turn out that one of this guy's other doubles is the one who killed him, and rigged the scan so he'd be the successor. Between this and some other stuff, the conclusion is pretty clear: this guy (and his doubles) are kind of assholes. The problem, of course, is that my MMC is one of them... and he's the FMC's love interest.

So, I figure once she meets his other selves, and gets entangled in this little murder mystery, she's going to be backing away from this guy. Meanwhile, he's got to somehow prove that he _isn't_ like the others -- that he has, essentially, learned how to _not_ be an asshole.

My main idea, at this point, is that he frees her from her contract (she's essentially his indentured servant) and pays for her citizenship -- but my friend and in-house plot doctor says that's too pat, too easy. And I'm inclined to agree.

So I need a situation where this guy has a difficult choice, between being an asshole, and being a decent guy... and he does the right thing, at some cost to himself. Some cost that isn't measured in money, obviously. Thus impressing the FMC enough that she decides to give him another chance.

Thoughts?

The problem with him just freeing her contract and paying her citizenship...it's not from the heart. It's too impersonal. Maybe it'll take your MC time to realize that love isn't about how much you can give another person, so all of his advances are monetary/material at firs.

Here are some possible solutions to spark your imagination:

What if something goes wrong with the citizenship/legal documents? What if the MC and FMC positions were suddenly switched by accident? For example, there's a mistake and he's legally become the FMC's indentured servant. He'll need to bite his tongue and follow along with dignity for the sake of the FMC - at least until all legal documents could be cleared up.

Are there other indentured servants he recognizes? Maybe one of them tries to kill themselves by walking in front of a car, but your MC has a hero moment and risks his butt to save them. Tells them the reasons they're important? He can be so caught up in the passion of his emotions that he forgets the FMC is even there! But she's watching! :)

He can always help an elderly woman across the street. Or help a child. Or a nun. Or puppies. XD

That's all I have. ^_^;

I hope it at least gave you some inspiration!

I don't think it's going to work out for this story, but I really like the idea of the accidental role switch... some fun could be had there for sure. But I think it's a little too light-hearted to fit here. Definitely one I'll be filing away for the future, though, so thanks!

At this point I'm leaning back towards him freeing her as his 'anti-asshole' moment. I think with the right frame, it could work. The frame being, one of his 'selves' has killed another, and then kidnapped them both, and he declares his love for her just when she's at the point of maximum freaking out about who he 'really' is. So she reacts badly, prompting him in turn to point out that she's stuck with him -- he's going to be the successor, the one holding her contract. So, that's the asshole moment.

The anti-asshole moment comes the next day, when she finds him and he's obviously not slept. He then frees her, with the clear expectation that she's going to high-tail it out of there, because he's come to the conclusion that he's despicable. Maybe she can even accuse him of doing it to win her over, so he can make it clear that he has no such expectation... ultimately winning her over. XD

I feel like when he tells the FMC she's going to be free, he should hand her a cup of coffee. You said tired and I thought caffeine. XD

That sounds brilliant! Your story is going to be so exciting! Best of luck to you! :)

:D

I'm not sure if they drink coffee in the future... but yeah, considering how much sleep my characters are losing over this, I'd better figure it out! XD

Thanks for the encouragement, and good luck to you, too! :)

How about having something really bad happen to her or someone she cares about and he comes to the rescue?

Mmm, I really don't want to do the damsel-in-distress thing with her, though... thanks for the suggestion, though!

it could be little things, like over the course of the story she can see him fighting the urge to say or do something that the wealthy guy always did, maybe the guy always interrupted people to turn conversations towards him and the clone could start out doing it too only to realize how rude it is and then he actually has to force himself to stop. Or he could just treat servants like human beings and say 'please' and 'thank you' when telling them to do things while the original and the clones wouldn't even bother.

Unfortunately, she doesn't get to compare-and-contrast him with his other selves until the last third of the book. So he's been a gentleman all along... but when she sees what the others are like, she's convinced that it was just an act.

Thanks for the suggestions, though -- they're definitely good ideas on how to make the asshole versions more unpleasant! :D

Some times the easy "pat" answer is the best, only add a twist to it. If she needs citizenship and is an indentured servant, find a way to make it so keeping her from becoming a citizen AND keeping her as a servant it better for her until the end where she can discover he was somehow put at a disadvantage by protecting her and not doing the normal free her thing.

I like this idea, tweak it up a bit...

Make him keep her as his servant, but later she finds out that, in doing so, he actually kept her from being taken advantage of. For example, someone approaches her with papers to make her free, and it's at a personal cost (she must prostitute for him X number of times) but with expedited paperwork and it looks JUST good enough to be true....

He finds out and sends the man running and literally threatens him and stuff. She thinks he's just trying to keep her to play with her (and out of possessiveness) and to continue to "force" her submissive nature to the fore (as I recall he's indoctrinating her to BDSM and she's a natural sub?).

Later she finds out that the guy who got run off was perpetrating a scam and you leading man knowingly saved her from it... to later free her himself in the much longer, more bureaucratic way.

Thank you both for the suggestion!

Something that initially seems asshole-ish, but which is later revealed to be a selfless act, is definitely a promising idea. I'm not convinced there's time in the plot for this specific scenario to play out properly, though... she doesn't 'belong' to him until they've sorted out the succession issue.

As an aside, she's not acting very submissive so far... I may have to drop the 'natural sub' angle entirely. XD

Your name was my "cool word of the day" that I included in my novel (decided upon because my brain was trying to tell me that Sirocco was the word I was looking for, and obviously, my brain is an idiot), and so I feel compelled to help.

It's really hard to prove a negative; so, to prove that he's not an asshole, there have to be situations where he *could* be an asshole, but he isn't. Show some kind of character development of him, deliberately going away from the asshole route. As roruna suggests above, situations where he may start out one way, then starts to realize how this makes him look (see, he's not really a bad guy; just clueless and ignorant. So when he learns better, he changes) then he stops. It doesn't seem like a big deal to him, and maybe it isn't at all, but it's a little piece of the puzzle. Include a few big scenes early, and then a couple more as the novel goes along to document the change.

I also agree that there should be a "big" scene, too. If the situation specifically requires that money isn't involved, that narrows things a bit. I mean, finding out that one of the companies under his control has been dumping toxic sludge into the drinking water of the local orphanage is a problem that could only be solved by money, in addition to other things.

Hmm. I'm also thinking that doing something directly for her is out, because it may then seem like he's doing it for ulterior motives, so it won't be something like helping her brother or anything.

Options! He has a friend, who is a generally good person, who does something stupid that could land him in jail or worse; MMC takes the fall, since his lawyers can keep him out of prison. Probably. MMC's plans of becoming a political leader are forever gone. FMC is initially horrified, but later finds out that he was lying to protect his friend. (Eh. This idea is weak, but whatever.)

Instead of killing the space pirates when they attempt to hijack his space yacht, he lets them all live and doesn't report the incident after finding out that they were only doing it because there's not enough food on their planet. He later helps to arrange behind-the-scenes support for space-food to be sent to the planet to help alleviate the suffering.

MMC gives up on a dream of his because in order to achieve it, he'd have to become the kind of man she hates (yay! so specific!)

Sorry, not sure that was any help at all. Good luck!

Thank you for all the ideas!

Money could be involved, but if that's all that's involved, it just seems too easy. It feels like he should have to give something up that matters to him... which is why I was initially leaning towards freeing her. Except if he does it because he knows that's the most likely thing to win her over... well, that's why it seems too easy, I guess, because he's not *really* giving her up.

And yeah, your instincts are good, anything that's directly for her is suspect. He has to win her over without setting out to win her over, at this point in the game...

*ponders*

What if one of the other clones realises he loves FMC and threatens to kill her - or destroy something very important to her if that's overdramatic - unless he does something for this other clone, e.g. provides a false alibi so that nobody knows said clone was actually sleeping with someone else's wife at the time of the murder (or something else assholey). If he does this, it'll seriously get him in trouble if it's discovered that he's lied, obviously he might be a murder suspect etc. But, for the sake of FMC he does it.

Not sure that was any help either. More good luck!

Thanks! I've actually already got one of the other clones kidnapping the MMC for nefarious purposes, and the FMC has to rescue him... but maybe I can rearrange things such the clone grabs the FMC first, and uses her to get the MMC to walk into a trap, and then they have to escape together... hm. Hmm. I like it. Thanks for the help! :)
