I certainly do not bother to do this. The word count facility just counts spaces and dumps the whole thing. In any case, I don't think anyone is going to want a part of a nano draft...
I've never bothered, either. Even if the electronic ghost of our manuscripts still lingers on in the servers, who's going to go to all the trouble to break into the NaNo servers and go through the thousands and thousands of manuscripts that have gone through there just to make off with someone's 30-day first draft wonder? No one with enough sense to actually be able to do anything with it.
Moonmomma: exactly - and then there are manuscripts written in all kinds of word's languages... and one should actually catch the manuscript as a man-in-the-middle attack...
(if I remember right our moderator commented that if somebody is idiot enough to steal somebody's hastily written first draft, the idion gets what it reserves...

Yep. The way look at it: If they really want to steal my gawdawful word vomit first draft, they can have it. They get what they deserve. ;)
Just publish on smashwords. I did 30 years of that submitting and rejecting stuff with limited success. Very depressing. It's more more fulfilling to have people reading the books now and making a few dollars :)
The validator counted your words and then promptly deleted them. I've never bothered to encrypt any of my novels in the six years I've been here, but some people prefer a little extra protection. I don't think there's any reason to worry, but that's up to you and what you feel comfortable with.
I only scrambled the novel I put in the validator once.
I only did it just to see how to do it.
I have not scrambled since.
When I did do it, I made a separate copy on a different thumb drive and scrambled that with the original on another thumb drive unplugged from the computer. I didn't want to accidentally scramble all copies of my novel.
Every now and then on the forums there is usually a post about how do I unscramble my novel. In fact, I think I have already come across this already this year.
I do not want to be one of these people. I even create a separate file of my novel before I copy/paste into the validator because I don't want to accidentally mess something up.
I have no concerns about my novel being stolen.
And if someone does steal it and publishes it, I will demand a share of the royalties and thank the person for doing all the work for me. (This hasn't happened yet.)
Encryption
How do I encrypt my novel to validate it? I've tried nonsense fonts but that negates the word count.
Re: Encryption
Save a separate copy of your novel, and follow the instructions for scrambling here.

Re: Encryption
I worked real hard on a number of novels; I polished, I scraped, I whittled. And then I went to publishers.
I have a stack of 'um, no' letters from publishers. Ever-growing.
If somebody can somehow take one of my first drafts and make money with... I need them to do this. So I can learn the secret. :D

Re: Encryption
Wait, so If I did not do encryption, should I be worried?
Re: Encryption
This year was the first time I didn't bother to encrypt it. I was feeling lazy, my paranoia was down...
And I have just about 100% certainty that my novel is safe.
(I'm not kidding about my paranoia)

Re: Encryption
Nah. It's an optional step provided for those who want to. I'd guess most people don't bother.

I say don't bother.
But if you do, be very careful.
My two cents.
