The word "robot" wasn't invented until Kapek's play, RUR, and my story takes place before that. Automaton is too many syllables to be used as a prefix. Any ideas for Steampunk synonyms for robot?
Right now I'm using "mech". Of course there's "clank" from Girl Genius, but I don't want to take from them.
It's sort of an old topic, but just to add my own personal opinion...
In worlds where the term "robot" would not come into common use in English, I like to use automaton, myself, and when that could conceivably be too long, shorten it to "autom." I like it because it has the same sort of feel as the word robot, if you understand what I mean.

Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
You could call them "clockworks", with "clock-" as a prefix for things...
Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
Thanks Keolah--Clockwork is a great term. Unfortunately I'm already overusing it (it's even part of the title).
Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
*mechanicals
*steambots
I also just lost a whole lot of time looking through
http://www.victorianweb.org/technology/index.html
which may not necessarily give you any names but will certainly help ground you in the science and sociaolgy of the time
Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
Thanks Lasalle202--I'll check out that site. Right now I'm using "Mechs", which is short for "mechanicals".
Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
Golem could work.
Re: Steampunk Names for Robots/Automatons
Servants, with a capital S.
