I'm in this boat, and I know many of you are as well. At just over 37,122 words, I'm only now about to reach a major plot event that will set up the entire rest of the story. I'll likely reach 50k, yes, but the novel will be far from finished at that point.

I'm aiming to get about 60k by the end of November and about 100k by the end of December. Who else has similar plans?

Me! December is probably unreasonable for finishing, with all the family and holiday tasks that fall to me in that month. (You look like a student. More power to you on finishing in December.)

But 50K will get me deep into the story without even getting close to the two major climax events (one being a repercussion of the first event), and I've got to wind things up. Aaargh.

I'm almost half-way through the word-count (Lost a few days this last week)...but there is absolutely no way this thing will even be close to finished by the end of the month. It will hit 150k easily, and I think it may well go even farther than that.

Wow, just hit the 50k mark today. I'm doing he said/ she said, alternating chapters. I'm not even a third of the way done working on the 'she' chapters, planning on writing the 'he' chapters after that was completed. So I'm going to be working on this one for a while!

Good to see I'm not alone! 30k in, and my MCs have only just arrived on planet Tebras VI... xP I'm just worried that after November, I'll stop writing - and then my novel might die a half-finished death! :( I'll just have to be extra sure not to let that happen... anyone else in this boat? :/ Are you going to keep writing through-out December with a set goal?

I've still got a lot more to write to get this story finished. It'll probably be another 10-20k minimum, I'm guessing. It's a bit hard to tell exactly how much more I've got to write. For all I know it won't be finished at 100k. I'm hoping it will be though.

I'm writing a trilogy, which means that if I alot each part 30k, i should be done at 90k. since the second part in the end did not reach the intended mark, but stoped at 22k, i'm moving my end goal to 80k. that's just 20k away, and i hope to reach it before december reaches me.

I'm at 50,000 now and my story has barely even started!
I did intend on this being a stand-alone 80k novel, but if i were to carry with the stand-alone, I could easily make it reach the 250k mark, if not more.
I thought that was a tad unreasonable, so with my 3 main sub-plots and 1 main plot to tie in, I'm thinking a trilogy, or even a four-piece saga.

Same here! Glad there's a club for this. I was starting to worry that I was rambling..? I devoted time to a short prologue, and thoroughly moving my characters from their norm to the new situation. You know how characters rebel against you... To my surprise I discovered that my main character was far more resistant to losing life as she knew it than I thought she'd be. Now they're definitely moving along, but they're far from the crisis.

Don't know about finishing before next year - this is definitely a rough draft! I've got a lot of 19th century research to complete - on weapons, steamships, etc., and I'd like to refine my narrative - make it jump off the page a little more. The voice is overly passive right now.

I have problems with finishing novels. As soon as I'm about to get to an intended plot point I'll think of something and put that in.
My prolougue-which is most definetely NOT prolougue size-is over 12.5k long.
And my villain isn't evil enough yet. He's kind of a villain because he's against the good guy but has good intentions for the world. Unfortunately, this means he needs to see bad stuff that's happened because of my main character.
Total of stuff bad happened because of my main character: 0, maybe 1 if you count something.
Total number of words so far: 55 134

Facepalm.

Definitely won't finish at 50K. At 38 (exactly 38k!) the characters are in place and the forthcoming action has been set up, but the main body of the plot is just about to begin. If all the action is climactic, it may end at 80k, but if it pans out the way it's suppoesd to, I reckon 100-105k. Now I just have to get it written down! :D

When i started this, again I had no idea what (if any) kind of plot would evolve. Somehow characters keep appearing and re-appearing and all of a sudden I have sub-plots. I already also know several things I have to add to the already existing story, but refinement is for later, right now i'm much more interested in how it'll all turn out. and 50 k probably won't cover that. And guess what? I'm glad it doesn't. Simply because I can continue to visit my written world a while longer than i thought ;)

Me too. I'm reckoning on having 70K by the end of the month, but I'm thinking the first draft will be more like 85K. There will be detail (description, characterisation) to add in, as my first shot is normally just about getting the plot down, but guff to take out. I'm going to be doing my standard 'scrap the first two chapters and start with chapter 3 thing' in rewrite too.

Yeah, word-wise I have just under 10K to go to hit the goal. Story-wise, my plot is structed over a seven day time-frame, and I'm in the middle of Day 4 of 7. And the major, major, major plot stuff happens on Day 5 and 6 -_-

I'm thinking 75 - 100K is more realistic for this one.

I have yet to reveal a significant character in my story, and I'm pretty sure that'll happen after 50k. The unexpected addition of another villain completely changed how that last character is coming in, and I'll probably be finishing at around 75k~ I'm aim to reach that by the end of this month, hopefully I'll make it. ><

the first drafts of my novels tend to be around 300-350k (yaaay fantasy with lots of characters) and at the endof this month I'll have over 100k of this draft done. So, nope. I have no idea how people can write novels that are less than 100k, let alone *just* 50!

I've passed the 50k mark and still far under the midpoint. I am shooting for 80k this month and 80k next month. I have been skipping most of my descriptive scenes and important background details in order to reach the end of the first half of my book this month. If I do the same next month, my first draft will be complete, and I can go back and write in all the important details and descriptions in January. :) Then I'm putting it aside for a month and starting it again in March for NaNoEdMo.

Yeah I hit 50k and the plot point in my synopsis didn't happen yet. Just had a little too much fun with tangents and building the character up. Why write up a character when you can just do all of that as word padding? :)

Don't worry though; I didn't just write character notes. It's all prose in my novel.

Hmm... I've just introduced my last (main) character, so about one third (according to plan) of the novell is done. That would make my total amount of words when I'm done about 120.000! o.O
Aaah, help! I can never ever write that much, but there were so many things that needed to be done (or written, depends how you look at it) and now the plot is growing incredibly fast. It's fun, but a little scary, too. What am I gonna do?

PS: If I can't find an ending earlier, I'll have to use a sudden, unexpected atomic bomb! :D

I knew mine wouldn't stop at 50K anyway: it's a second edition, and the first was 60K, almost 70.

But this one is actually longer: At 50K in the first book, I was wrapping things up; at 50K in this draft, I'm just getting started. I'm predicting a 100K Second Edition, and if I have the time, I'm going to try to get 50K more words in December to prove this.

Plus, on the edit, I'm a taker-outer, so I figure I'll probably have to write 200,000 words to end up with something that actually looks like a novel, but if I hit 50 by Nov 30, I'm still calling myself a winner. :)

Well, the novel I began last year reached 51K by the end of November last year, grew to 72K by October this year, so I'm writing Part Two this year. So far I'm on target with 35K since Nov 1st, and I think even then it's going to need a few more words just to use up all the plot...

I'm deliberately writing long because that's how my characters tend to reveal themselves. I can then cut out chunks and make it nice and sleek at my leisure.

50K in 30 days is the challenge - even if you still have story to tell, you're still a winner!

I've just reached the big reveal in my plot where all the truths come out. I still have about 10 chapters to go in my outline and right now I'm writing about 2,000 words a chapter, so I'm guessing I'll finish at around 65-70k. Of course that doesn't count all the red notes that say "add more to this later, move on to next part" I have huge sections of plot I have to go back and fill in as well. This will definitely be the longest thing I've written, which was my goal for the year. Now if I can only get it done!

Re: The "My Novel Definitely WON'T Be Done At 50,000 Words" Shoutout!

I'm over 34,000 words and nowhere near done.

Still getting to know my characters -- and getting them talking to one another. The plot remains largely undiscovered. And I'm not bothering one whit with location/setting except for knowing where each scene is set -- no description/exposition whatsoever yet. No weather, no ambiance, no larger context. And larger contexts are critical since the story is set in both today's Chicago and Chicago of the Gilded Age (1870s-90s).

Speaking of which, I have a ton of research to come. Historical and medical.

My plan is to keep filling in holes and sorting out the characters and plot while doing some basic research so I can resolve any major kinks early-on. This process will probably take at least 3-4 months. Then I'll start editing, and digging into very detailed research, which will take another several months at least.

If all goes well, I might be ready just in time to pants my way though NaNo 2012!

I am considering cleaning up the first part though and splitting it into 2. As it stands, all the action happens in the second part and that doesn't seem like the kind of story that would draw me in, as a reader.

My most conservative estimates for this beast are between 120-130 thousand, so no, I won't be done. But winning is just the icing on the cake for me (I'm only a few hundred words away as we speak). I want to make a career out of this, and NaNo has helped me show myself that I can totally write an astonishing amount of prose in a day and still have plenty of free time left over. I'm going to continue with my 2,000+ per day pace until the end of November, and then I'll cut back to 5 days a week starting in December - but I won't be stopping any time soon, even when I finish this book. I have more than enough material to keep writing, and I'm going to do so.

I'm here. I think I might just slap an epilogue on it and call it a night. There's a lot of scene that I didn't get to do despite the high word count but I think I would just have to start over with another, better outline if I'm going to add to it.

Same here. My story structure goes like this:

Introductions -> First battle (space) -> First battle (land) -> Intermission -> Second battle (MC1)[CURRENT STAGE; 25% DONE] -> Second battle (MC2) -> Second battle (MC1, part two) -> Second battle (MC3) -> Shorter intermission -> Final battle -> Endings

I would like to keep it under 100,000 words, but I may have to save that for revision.

I'm nowhere near done yet, but I need to be done at 75K to 80K, which I may or may not make by Nov. 30. I'm writing toward the market, and a first-time cozy mystery novelist will have (so They say) a better shot at acceptance with a ms that's between 70K and 85K, tops.

I have lots of ideas of things to cut already, so that feels good. Draft is a hot mess, though! Happy revisions, everyone!

Anyone out there know they're going to submit their NaNovel to agents/publishers? How about self-pub plans?

I currently anticipate my novel's final length being between 100-150k words. It could easily extend as far as 250k or more, though, depending on how much more my characters reveal to me as I type. All I know for sure is that at 25k I am no more than 25% of the way through my story, and I'm starting to think I may not even be that far into it.

[/quote]

I'm in that boat, too. I've been worrying about that all week, actually. I think I'm going to try for 30k or so in December. I'll need some motivation to keep writing, though... :P

Re: The "My Novel Definitely WON'T Be Done At 50,000 Words" Shoutout!

I'm so VERY MUCH in this club. XD I normally nano through the middle-end of my books, because that's what I struggle most with, but this year I went from the beginning, and it seems to be measuring out as I expected - there's at least another 60k in it, and quite possibly more.

Then again, it's 'book two', and book one is not (QUITE. QUITE. NEARLY THERE) done at over 200,000 words. So if this one comes in at about 150,000 or so I'll be pretty relieved. XD

I'm devoting December to finishing off the first book, so this one will be dropped at least until January - and I have a shorter book to rewrite so I can try pitching it. I'm kinda planning to poke this one on and off, and then hack at it again for camp nano next summer. XDD

I actually scheduled time to write each day like I have been this month so I don't lose the momentum. It's gonna be a little challenging for me with this big project at work plus I'm moving to at the end of december. Yay, packing : |

But Congrats to all of us!!!

Me. My novel will probably end up at least 70k, probably more. Even just the sketchy way I'm writing it. I've got most my major events and now I'm filling in the gaps and that's definitely going to carry me over the line. And then some. Or a lot.
And after that, there will be the fleshing out of the time in between things exploding and fights happening. Which will probably end up being at least 5k.

I have less than 8K to go and my story is definitely going to take up more words than that. I want to get as close to the end as possible by Wednesday though, even if it means rushing it a bit. It'll be better when I come to edit to expand on rushed sections than to be faced with a blank page again, right?

Yup, same here. I hit 50k last week, took a couple of days off writing and am now working hard on the rest of the story. I'm estimating 90k for it to be complete, so I'll probably end up writing another 40k before 2012.. At least I hope I can finish a draft before the new year hits. That would be great :)

And then to think that it's only the first book in a trilogy or four book saga.. Yikes!

Was just under 53k when I wrote THE END but as I read through the novel I can see places where it will grow at the rewrite stage. BUT that won't be until new year as I have a novel needing its final draft which has taken 12+ years to get to an acceptable point. (Also another first draft to redo)

Still v pleased and will definitely be revising this up beyond 60,000 at least.

I figure I probably have at least another 50k to go to reach any sort of adequate resolution not to mention all the minor details I omitted in the frenzy of NaNo. Oh well.
50,000 words is a small number for a novel, mine ends at 75,000-80,000 depending on the draft, but it's part of a series. So the full story won't be told in 50,000 words, not close at all.

I am not sure if you've considered this, but you might be able to break it into a series. Have a nice trilogy or maybe just two books? Plus, if you're planning on selling it, you could get readers to jump into the first book, then they might eagerly await the second, and so on. Rather than buy one really large book that they aren't sure they will get sucked in to, they will give a smaller one a shot, then move forward.
