delete all of my comments.
if need be and i decide i want to erase my internet existence...
maybe we could have a button next year under the "My Forum Comments" dropdown (which i love, by the way), which is "delete all comments and threads made by ________"
thanks!

[Amended subject line to include topic.]

Part of our terms of service include the fact that we don't delete comments unless absolutely necessary.

People should be accountable for what they say, plus it messes with people's minds when things that were there and they experienced are suddenly gone.

If you expect you're going to want everything to be removed, don't put it up on the site. Or use an suitably anonymized account.

However, our track record for making the archives available is pretty dismal lately.

Thank you. And it's not so much that I want people to delete my comments, although that did happen last year (that's another story for another thread, i'm sure), but, for example, if i wanted to make it look like i didn't exist. poof! no more hamlet_ophelia_xoxo!
still, thanks!

That is unlikely to be possible; even if we were to allow deletion of all your posts, you wouldn't be able to delete your account. Site policy doesn't allow that - accounts used for forum postings are not deleted) it wouldn't erase your internet presence. Google caches, wayback machine... the net has your data. ;)

Basically, always be careful of what you post... anything you post online has the potential to be permanent.

Wait, you can never delete your account? What if you don't use it for a long while?

If you don't log into it for a year, then it's marked as inactive once the site goes through a complete refresh, which happens each October.

So you can't delete your account, but it eventually happens if you don't log into it for a year. Hope that helps :)

Even if you deleted all your comments from here by some sort of button, they'd remain in things like Google Cache.

Or someone might have saved the thread to their computer.

I have a thread saved that has to do with filling the White House with Jell-O...

I saved that one, too. Is the thread still lurking around somewhere, or is it gone for good?

What I'd like to see next year is an edit button, so I can edit my comments, such as, I forgot to say something, and don't want to post again, cluttering up the thread by posting something like...

"By the way, Congratulations to ______ for ________." Where the blanks are the person's name on NaNo and whatever it was they did, perhaps they hit a 5k or 10k day.

FIll in my name on the winners certificate and post it to facebook! Or twitter! Or my Blog! Let that winner's badge go global!!

An edit button is forum functionality present on every other forum I have ever been on...but being able to erase your existence seems kind of sketchy...
