NaNo should be not November because after Thanksgiving muse dies...

NaNo should be in October...

I agree it would be more convenient in another month. Thanksgiving is a pretty important holiday.

October has Halloween though, which I'm sure that being the last day, everyone's not going to want to be bothered by trick-or-treaters as they scramble to finish up their word count wins.

There is never a good time for everyone. There's always a major holiday, or important tests, or SOMETHING. Why is it in November? To take advantage of the miserable weather. There is never a good month. NaNoWriMo teaches you to be persistent even though you have real life interventions.

I have done group writing competitions, not affiliated with NaNo/etc, in January, March, April, June, July, September, and December. Every single one of those months had something flail-worthy. Doctors appts, school stuff, work stuff, my mom's health issues, trips that couldn't be postponed... Any month out of the year will have *something* to flail about, for a large portion of NaNoers. It's not going to help anything to move it to a different month, expect maybe to help people flail about something different, besides Thanksgiving.

Argument about Thanksgiving muse is invalid for every country that is not the US.
(Excuse me, princess. I only happen to know that not every country has the same holidays! *ragespasm*)

You are always free to write your novel whenever you want. o_o November wasn't easy for me either in the last two years due to lots of work and other stress. I'm glad it's not officially in October.
Lots of people from my writing group are university students or otherwise students. September is the time school starts after the summer break here in Austria, afaik other countries as well. Plotting your novel and concentrating on new school stuff? Kind of irritating.
Also a bonus point about November: You know that after its over there's some holiday time ahead.

Re: I PROPOSE A CHANGE!

Pretty much this. October would be a horrible time for me, since that's always the month I have the biggest workload from school. (I would still attempt this if it was in October, don't get me wrong, but I just want to point out that even October wouldn't be good for everyone.) The point is to find the time to write. Instead of sitting down to watch that movie - go write! Instead of sitting and drinking coffee for half an hour in the morning - write and drink coffee for half an hour in the morning! Instead of taking a half hour shower, take a five minute shower and spend the rest of the time writing! :)

There are lots of other Writing Months created by users who wanted to write more. Why not try one of those? :)
Here's the list I could find for all of them, though I'm not sure if they link to the most popular sites for that month: http://www.squidoo.com/novel_writing_months

I was (mostly :) joking. For me personally, November is good, since I get Veteran's Day off and I don't have to travel for Thanksgiving. But for people who do travel, that's 4 days they can't write, or not as much. But I've thought quite a few times, in the depressing cold dark days of Jan-Feb, that it would be a good time for NaNoWriMo.

A list can be found here - I'd post it all here, but the list is long and full of links to the other writing sites.

I doubt this is a full and complete list however, since new challenges are always being created. It's a good start, though.

That list is part of the "I Wrote a Novel, Now What" block... it's not comprehensive, but it won't be posted until sometime next week, when special offer codes are distributed.

Oh! It would also feel a little funny to have a random 31 days instead of an even 30, IMO. :)

Argument about Thanksgiving muse is invalid for every country that is not the US.
(Excuse me, princess. I only happen to know that not every country has the same holidays! *ragespasm*)
...

Also a bonus point about November: You know that after its over there's some holiday time ahead.
[/quote]

Holiday time ahead in your country, you mean? 'Cause did you know not all countries have the same holidays?

Although quite a number of cultures observe some kind of feasts around solstices, so I thing majority of people of the world have some kind of holiday. I remember only Christmas and Hanukkah, but I'm sure there are others (Moslem religious year is shorter than solar year, so the feasts "wander" anyway), and also the Western New Year...
