NaNoMail could be made easier/is cutting off text

I apologise if this is in the wrong forum, since it's sort of part feedback and part tech problem. Please feel free to move it. :)

I've noticed this year that, when using NaNoMail, quite a lot of the message can get cut off, from either person. Much of the time, I only receive or find that I've sent half a message even though I typed the whole thing.

For example, I received a message from another member and it arrived like this:

> > Hi. The summary of your novel made it sound really interesting and I would like to read it. NaNoMail me back if it is okay for me to read it, and I'll give you my email address. :)
>
> Hi! Thank you for offering! ll probably read yours through the Christmas holidays.

Somehow, it's mixed up what both of us have said into one piece of text. It's meant to look like this:

> > > Hi. The summary of your novel made it sound really interesting and I would like to read it. NaNoMail me back if it is okay for me to read it, and I'll give you my email address. :)
> >
> > Hi! Thank you for offering! <3 What file format do you want? :)
>
> Microsoft Word .docx preferably, but i have Adobe Reader if that is easier for you. My email address is ________
> I have a lot of wrimos i want to read and quite a lot of important tests coming up, so I'll probably read yours through the Christmas holidays.

I only found how it was MEANT to look through pressing the 'reply' button, which I did to tell the other person that their response didn't make any sense to me! I don't know if perhaps the mail system is having trouble with certain symbols - for example, I noticed it cut mine off after the '<3' symbol - or if there's just a bug, but I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem.

Also, I think the system could be made easier by stating who said what instead of just having the arrows. For example 'BloodRoseAngel said:' before what I said, and so on. It makes it a little difficult to keep track of what went where and who said what otherwise. :)

As I said, if it's in the wrong forum, feel free to move. :)

I was wondering if that had something to do witl that <3 that appears just in the beginning of the piece that was cut out.

The < interpreted as a start of a code!

But it actually could give a warning...

It is. When you use an opening arrow like that, the website interprets that as the start of HTML code; since what follows isn't on our approved codes list, it cuts it off. this is actually a security feature that prevents people from injecting malicious code. I don't know of a way to flag posts so that it only stops certain things but not others.

If you do it without the code, it should display just fine. It's not a nanomail bug, it's a site-wide security feature. :) Annoying, yes, but that's why it's like that.

Ah, thank you for the clarification! It just struck me recently that that could be it. I use that code a lot, so I'll have to remember to stop doing it here! XD It doesn't seem to do it on other websites even when they use that symbol in that coding, but I'm no expert so I wouldn't know. ;)

Hmmm. Would it be good with some kind of automatic preview - it was obvious that the poster had used a "smiley" (don't know what I'd call it) that then put everything off - possibly with a comment "if it does not look right, check that you do not use < you can write it as "<"" or something...

It is very easy not to remember that < should be coded with an html entity (and I suspect many do not even know how to do it...)

Re: NaNoMail could be made easier/is cutting off text

That's a good idea actually, because the '<3' symbol is one that's very commonly used on websites like Facebook, and it's also used as part of deviantART's coding but the website has no trouble with you just putting the symbol on its own. I'm no expert at all, but I think a note to let you know what not to put in your messages so you don't throw them off would be good. X3
