FAQ addition suggestion for next year

As a newbie WriMo this year, I had a bit of trouble deciding which genre my book is*. You see, I read what I like, and don't really pay all that much attention to which "genre" it is. Plus, there seem to be a whole lot more of them now than there was 20 or so years ago, when I last paid attention to such things!

What I'd like to see added to the FAQs is a brief listing of the various genres, with a definition and maybe a few sample titles of books and authors that fit that particular category. That would REALLY be helpful to newbies and the clueless! As it is, the closest thing I have to a "definition" is the little forum blurb below the title of each of the genre forums. That helps, a bit, but isn't exactly definitive.

(*I finally settled on "Mainstream" because my book didn't really seem to fit the others...but what do I know. I have a writing buddy who keeps insisting that my book is a Romance novel!)

Well; we really don't want to define genres for our participants. Genre is very much a self-identifying process, and even those who write within those genres often don't agree on what "counts" as being a part of the genre. Just see the Steampunk discussion down in other genres as an example. :)

We don't have a comprehensive, nor a pre-defined list of genres. We allow everyone to make that decision for themselves. IF you need help, there's always the Genre ID thread down in Other Genres.

I had no idea that thread even existed! I just remember signing up in October, and being asked (almost immediately), "what genre?" and I had no idea.

I would not have thought to look in the "Other Genre" forum for advice on what genre my book might be. But instead of having 100,000 newbies asking what genre their book might be, if you don't want to try to define genres, maybe you could make a post, perhaps in Writing 101, that has links to a bunch of websites that talk about different genres? That way we know where to go look, and can get sufficiently confused by reading a bunch of conflicting definitions, that we at least pick the right two or three to throw a dart at to decide.

Hmmmm....maybe I have a scifi adventure romance?

Maybe an FAQ entry along the lines of:

Help! How do I know what genre I'm writing!?

- You can participate in any genre forum you like; however, if you need help identifying your book, see [link to stickied thread]

What about adding a diary section on our pages. Then we could check and see how were doing without having to plow through all the treads during the year. eg: if we got published we could note it down so other writing buddies could see if they checked linked to our page. Or take an idea from oprah, on her site your profile has a list of comments made to the comment boards, theyre a little like your threads.
