PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hello to everyone participating in NaNoWriMo 2011,

My name is Pomke and I am the co-creator of a new kind of online writing software for authors and writers of all kinds called PangurPad. We are proud to be an official sponsor of NaNoWriMo 2011 and we’d love for you to come and take a look at what we have to offer Wrimos this year.

We have created PangurPad to provide amazing tools with a unique, integrated community and review system so that you can write, review with your peers and publish all in one place – backed up online.

PangurPad is a fully equipped web-based editor and publishing tool designed to work in most modern web browsers. Don’t let that fool you, PangurPad is just as capable as deskstop writing software; even more so because if your computer crashes you don’t lose a thing with your entire manuscript, notes, timeline and more saved on the PangurPad servers.

PangurPad also provides a uniquely integrated community of writers at your fingertips. Join or even create communities and share your drafts with the community for peer review, or just chat about the art of writing with other writers in communities that interest you.

<strong>The PangurPad Editor</strong>
<img src="http://files.content.lettersandlight.org/nano-2011/files/2011/10/pangurpadscreenshot.png" alt="" title=""><strong>You probably want to know what we have to offer. The answer is, quite a few things:</strong>

<strong>Free access to PangurPad for NaNoWriMo 2011 participants to write your novel!</strong>
It’s hard to beat free right? Simply sign up and verify you are a real 2011 Wrimo participant and you’ll have access to all of our great tools and unique community. You’ll get your very own profile where you can tell the world about yourself, share your writing, have it reviewed by your peers – and publish it on your website, blog, Facebook, Amazon, take it to a publisher, anything!

<strong>A portion of any full memberships prior to the end of Nov will be donated to NaNoWriMo!</strong>
One of the awesome things about NaNoWriMo is that it’s totally free to participate; the Office of Letters and Light run such a wonderful event that we couldn’t help but become a sponsor. So, we’ve decided that for every 2011 Wrimo who signs up for a full membership to PangurPad before the end of December, we’ll give five percent of that to the OLL as well!

<strong>Extra love for your hard working Municipal Liaisons with %50 off!</strong>
Yes, we love them too. MLs are the hard-working volunteers out there in each region running local events, cheering on their fellow Wrimos and ensuring everyone is having a great time. As a special show of appreciation to these amazing people we are offering a %50 discount on full membership to any ML who cares to take up the offer!

<strong>So come and see what all the fuss is about for yourself!</strong>
Getting started with PangurPad is simple. Head over to <a href="http://pangurpad.com/" rel="nofollow">pangurpad.com</a> and sign up – be sure to check the ‘I’m a Wrimo’ box on the registration form and follow the instructions. See you there!

Best wishes and happy writing,

The PangurPad Team

Re: PangurPad writing software for Mac and Windows

I started using PangurPad about a week ago... And I LOVE IT!

The uploading your work on the go feature is pretty cool in itself, but there are so many awesome features if you decide to become a paying member with a small annual fee, or a slightly larger one off fee to become a founding member(I will be buying my founding membership as soon as I get paid next week, and my nano goodies).

There are formatting options to make your upload to creatspace upon winning easy, a paying member can have unlimited works, with unlimited word counts, ebook marketplace access, competitons to come... It's still in progress, but I am already addicted!

I'm going to register, but I noticed I need to know my user number from Nano to get the Nano trial....I have no idea what that number is, and the method it showed to find out is not working. My number does not show in my address bar, so I'm stumped on what to do about that...does look very cool though!

Just an update on this, we've deployed a fix; the sign up system is a tiny bit different so check the instructions on the registration page, you need to enter the name you see at the end of your profile not the old number. If you signed up as a trial member never fear, you can visit http://pangurpad.com/linknano (once you've logged in) to verify your nano membership.

Sorry for the trouble, best of luck with your novel!

Win some NaNo Bling!

A quick heads up, PangurPad are running a competition on our forums right now, you get 15 minutes to speed-write to a word prompt and the winner will receive a packet of official NaNoWriMo badges! It only takes 15 minutes and it's a great way to get in the writing groove with just three weeks before NaNo begins :O

Best of luck!

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hey there Sugarbritches, thanks for the questions :)

PangurPad is totally free to use as a NaNo participant. If you'd like to buy a full membership it's just $20 a year (I really need to get that up on the front page!) but you don't have to pay a thing to use it for NaNoWriMo at all.

Our terms and conditions are pretty standard ones and relate to posts you make on the forums/things you write in your pangurpad profile etc. You're basically giving us the right to show other people that information on our website.

In our Ts &amp; Cs we define 'works' which are totally different, those are your writings and as it says if you chose to publish your writing via pangurpad for others to see, you have to give us the right to show it to other people, if you don't ever use our publishing features then you don't give us that right :)

Basically your writing on pangurpad is for your eyes only, not even our moderators/admins can read it unless you publish it for them to see.

I hope this helps answer your queries Surgarbritches, happy writing :)

We're actually working on IE support right now and it should be out by the end of next week with our new-look editor and a whole bunch of new features :)

ps: We've also just discovered that IOS 5 (iPad) finally has support for rich text editing through the web so PangurPad now works just fine on iPad (ios5) as well :D

Best wishes,

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hi, I have a question about how Pangurpad saves my novel. I want to be able to use it both at home and at work, but I don't want my novel to be recorded on the servers at work. When I first load the editing page, I get that pop up that asks for permission to allow Pangurpad to use the browser (or something) to save my work--If I say no, will it still save my novel, or what exactly does that mean?

You really need an FAQ page on the website--if there is one, it's not easily accessible, as I couldn't find it!

Hi there Shara,

You sure can use PangurPad safely at work. You need to click ok when it asks to save your work on the browser, if you're worried about your work accessing your Novel on your work PC you can clear cookies/saved data in your browser once you're finished (Be sure to have clicked save before hand to make sure that your novel has been saved on the PangurPad server or else you will lose your changes made at work).

An FAQ is a great idea, I'll get on to that right away :)

Just a small whine: I tried to use your service, but was told that my firefox browser is too old and I need to update to firefox 5. That would be fine if it was just a note warning me that everything might not work as it should, but when I'm blocked off the page over such a thing, that's just annoying. Why not warn about this before I went through the trouble of signing up, or just not block me completely for something like that?

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

So I've been using PangurPad for a couple of days now, and I'm fairly impressed so far, if there weren't that one problem I have:
I need to work on my novel both on my PC and my netbook - and occassionally on my Iphone as well.
This weekend, I only used my netbook, because I was visiting my family, and now when I try to access my novel on my PC, it doesn't show the progress I made this weekend, but only the things I wrote on my PC.
I tried to access my novel again over my netbook, which worked just fine, I can see all the things I wrote on there. I even tried to save it again and made sure it said: "Saved on Pangurpad.com" (or something like that), but I still can't see my newly written things when I access PangurPad over my PC.

Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hiya spalven :)

Great point about letting people know before hand, I'm just adding some minimum browser requirements to our shiny new FAQ (should be up in the next few hours) and also on our features page. I'm guessing you're on firefox ~3.6? Unfortunately those warnings are important because very old versions of browsers don't have the features required for PangurPad to work at all. Rather than having someone try to use an old browser and then have all of their work get lost because it was unable to save, we'd rather just say 'Nope sorry you need a more recent browser'. Sorry for the hassle and I hope you have an awesome NaNo 2011!

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Oooh how peculiar, *ponders*

Thanks so much for taking the time to make a screenshot, that helps a lot :)

I was about to say "oh that's easy you have javascript disabled, you need to have javascript enabled to use PangurPad", But then I noticed something really interesting in your screenshot.

(Warning, geekspeak ahead)

Notice how Community, online backup etc are shown as links? yet these elements on our website are not links at all, just simple text elements. There is something altering the PangurPad website in your browser, my first suggestion would be a rogue browser plugin that converts text in html to links, but you say it is in both firefox and chrome so you'd need to have said plugin installed in both (unlikely?) which makes me a bit suspicious about it being something a tad more malicious such as an advertising virus :(

What happens if you hover over the link that says 'online backup'? where do those links go? Do you have this problem with any other websites?

Sorry I can't be any more specific but there is definitely something strange happening when you visit PangurPad because there are links in your screenshot that are not links on our website at all.

Hopefully we can work it out :)

Hi bibliosylph, that is a great question. I wasn't aware that YW hadn't come across to the new site format, we don't have any facility in place for signups from YW and that's not so cool so I'll be looking into what we can do for YWs ASAP.

In the meantime they would need to create NaNo profiles on the main site so they can signup as you've suggested, or alternately if it would be easier they can signup as basic trial members and if you let me know here or via our feedback form at http://pangurpad.com/contact who they are I can manually upgrade them to NaNo accounts (although the link from their PangurPad Profile to their NaNo profile won't work).

Sorry for this obvious oversight, and thanks so much for letting me know :)

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hi there Janje, we're working on IE support in our editor and it should be out any day now, however IE6 support is very unlikely I'm afraid. PangurPad makes use of some great new features of modern web browsers to offer things like offline mode and given IE6 is now over 10 years old (and no longer even supported by Microsoft) it's just not safe/practical to support.

I'd love to know how you go using your kindle browser though :) Unfortunately I don't have a kindle to test with *makes a note to write to Santa this year for one*

Best of luck with your NaNo !

Thanks, pomke. One of the boys signed up here and used it for his setup; the other would rather stay with just the YW site, so we'll use the feedback form to let you know his id. And—I think this could be great for their age group, 8th &amp; 9th grade, so I hope you can get something rolling for the Young Writers. I can recommend it around the homeschool/virtual school circles when you do. :-)

I'm checking my system for anything installed under LivingPlay or whatever to see if it's something my brother installed with his game.

I'm using Firefox, if it matters.
Upon trying to link accounts, it tells me: "Registering with your NaNoWriMo ID is easy, simply log in to NaNoWriMo.org and click 'My NaNoWriMo' just under the logo, you'll find your ID in your browser's location bar:"
Yet when I click on 'My NaNoWriMo', the address in my address bar is this: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/dashboard
Just for kicks, I tried 'dashboard' -- with no luck. I also tried my user name, but that didn't work, either.

Hiya kirstinlee, PangurPad contacts the NaNoWriMo site and looks for your NaNo Profile, if you're getting directed to the dashboard I think that means you have not created a profile on the NaNo website yet. This used to be automatic but it seems that you have to create your profile manually now with the new NaNoWriMo site, there should be a link at the top of the dashboard to do so, then PangurPad will be able to recognise you as a Wrimo. Sorry about the confusion! - Pomke

I've been typing in it so far and the glitches are few and far between, I am very happy with it so far but there is one very beautiful feature.

As you type, if you have the editor screens up on each side of your document. In the bottom left corner as you type each word you can look it up on google, wictionary and all that, but if you have a note titled to match that it will come up. So if I write Yethzer, it comes has a link with that character's info. If I type angel I get my "angel appearence" "angel magic" and "male angel names" etc. It really is wonderful.

I've tried all I can to make PangurPad run here, and even sent a message in the PangurPad community there asking for help, but with no answer.

I really loved it, but after I click "New Work", I'm stuck in the Checking Local Storage screen. I'm using Chrome Canary, so browser version is probably not a problem. I've tried to clear the cache, the cookies, restart, create a new work, nothing happens. I'm still stuck.

But I must say I loved the design and the community there, the way it works is unbelievably simple yet I felt so attracted to it.

Hope I can manage to finally start writing there.

Hi there androjinni, You deleted your post on the PangurPad forum just after I read it so I'd assumed you had worked it out but then you reposted it again, sorry for the mixup.

As mentioned in the reply there Google Chrome - Canary is a developer only experimental release of the browser and not intended for regular use. We've put in a fix for the issue in Canary but we're not rushing it out, I'd recommend using a stable version of Chrome for browsing the web in general (you might actually be exposing yourself to security risks by using Canary).

I hope this helps, best of luck with your NaNo!

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hello Pomke,

Currently, I am writing on an ipad 2, using the pages app offerred by them. I use also a PC. I do some writing and then send my self my work to two different email addresses as a word doc; put them in a folder and I will edit them later.

I very much like how quickly and thoroughly you respond to all the questions here, and I have a question for you. Your program sounds good, but why should I get it? Ihave a lot of difficulty with all the information it takes to operate a computer and the various programs and sites change too frequently for me to catch up. Years ago, microsoft works was a very straightforward and easy to use program, much like a typewriter, maybe a bit better. A few years later, I can hardly understand all the uses of MW and frquently, after an update, can't find where once familiar features are. Fast forward: I've only had this ipad for a few months; and, after a recommended software sync; even the basic interface is different and confusing.

I am curious about your product, but I am leary of the fact that I may have to learn too much to use it. Many of the posters here speak so aptly about their use of PangurPad--I just don't know. I don't actually trust the whole "cloud " technology and am likely to store my info in several places anyway. What is the basic design of the program that would help me as a writer? If I were to use a program other than word processing; I would like to use one where someone like you answers questions so thoroughly and promptly. I am really impressed by your diligence in this forum. Regards, Sancho Panza

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Hello Sancho,

Thank you for taking the time to write down your questions about PangurPad. Thank you because such broad questions give me a chance to step back and reflect on why we've written this software and more broadly to reflect on my craft of software development in general.

You pose some great questions and I'll endeavor to answer them as best I can:

You mention the frequency with which software changes these days, from humble beginnings offering to make your tasks easier such as the MS Works you remember, just a bit more advanced than a modern typewriter, to the ultra advanced MS Word which has so many features there are dedicated courses people take to learn how to use it.

If you observe the average user of Word they will make use of perhaps five percent of its overall functionality. Given that the majority of users will never use most of the features it is odd that every year or so we all go out and upgrade to the next version, often having to re-train ourselves because as you've mentioned everything has moved to make it seem 'new and exciting' all over again.

Software is a fast moving industry and much of the drive behind the pace is the need to compete feature for feature with our competitors. If your rival down the road adds a bell or a whistle which you do not have then it is quite possible your next customer will say "Well both of these products fulfill my basic need, but with this one I'm getting three extra bells and a shiny whistle, that must be better value!"

In the escalating war of bells and whistles, many once useful applications have become bloated with features nobody really uses making the software confusing, slow and in some cases error prone. Yet for some these advanced features can become essential, for the 'power user' (As legitimate a customer as a general user) having the flexibility of these tools at their fingertips is important.

Another pitfall I see many good applications fall into as they evolve is spreading their features across far too broad a range of tasks. Perhaps a piece of software which was once great at writing a letter now has features for script writers, novelists, people writing technical documentation, sign writing, making web pages, party invitations, annotating music... all the while more 'clutter' is accumulating in the wings, waiting to confuse the hapless user who simply wants to get that letter written.

So it becomes a struggle, as a software developer you are often between a rock and a hard place, the first is keeping up with the joneses and the latter is keeping your software simple enough that a new user can be up and running within 30 seconds when they first try it out.

Another point you make is not trusting 'the cloud' with your valuable data, and I'd like to start by saying you're a wise and astute person indeed, I'd stick with that philosophy for the time being. We've seen some spectacular blunders with modern online services in recent history; from companies losing personal customer data by mistake, to large social networking platforms who seem happy to sell your information to the highest bidder. Yet there ARE many great advantages to this style of software offering and as the years roll on I think they will only become more and more compelling.

So why SHOULD you use PangurPad over our competitors? both those here amongst the NaNo sponsors and more broadly amongst the pantheon of fantastic writing software available today.

I believe that it comes down to a matter of trust; essentially, who do you depend on to look after you and your digital assets, to cater for the novice user and the pro user and to listen to their customers and take on board and respond to feedback in an appropriate way.

Firstly you need to consider the ethos of the company behind the software. Are they here to turn a quick dollar? to wow you with the shiny bells and whistles and then sell their company off to the highest bidder? Are they here to cast their net as wide as possible, to stretch their resources near and far in the hope of attracting people en-mass, Jack of all trades but master of none? Or are they dedicated to the software they write, are they passionate about their users of all shapes and sizes, do they stay awake at night burning with the need to make their software helpful above all else?

You can read a little about the people and the ethos behind PangurPad at our company website, http://pangur.com.au, or better yet you can come along and see the community we're building at http://PangurPad.com and the dialog we're engaged in on our forums with our users as we endeavor to create a useful product for authors.

I could explain here how PangurPad is designed to be as free of distractions as possible; how when you first open our editor through our website you are greeted with a simple plain screen into which you can start typing. Useful, well thought out features such as character notes, places, items, timelines, word counts, word targets and more are readily available when you are ready for them. Then again I'd rather invite you to come and see for yourself what we have to offer, it's free to try out as a NaNoWriMo Participant.

I could tell you that our cloud servers are invincible against all attackers, that we'll never go off line for even a moment and that our software is perfect and free of bugs.. however that would be a fib.

What I can tell you is that we've taken all the precautions we can to secure our servers, that we have them located in one of the most trusted data centers we could find and that we are passionate about improving our software and stamping our glitches as they appear.

I can tell you that when one of our users accidentally deleted her whole Novel this week we were up until 1am on Saturday to get it back for her.

I won't ask you to trust us because in this business trust is something earned, but I'll tell you we understand this, and that it is important to us and we'll be doing our utmost at every step of the way to do the right thing by our customers, because that is how we believe you should be treated.

Thanks again for your questions and I hope this response hasn't dragged out too long.. oh dear it looks rather lengthy, I'd better stop before everyone gets bored and stops reading.

Kindest regards,

Pomke

Please explain what the abbreviation AUD means, and if it means a different amount will actually be charged to my credit card based on the exchange rate. I am an ML who wants to buy the software at the founding rate-- I am wondering if this is really a one time or some kind of annual dues thing (the A makes me wonder this.)

I did google AUD and found it was Australian Dollars. I'm just not sure how that is processed on an American credit card. It seems like you should have amounts listed for at least the major countries participating in Nano.

Thanks for your help.

Heya Hob,

To clarify AUD does mean Australian Dollar. We're using Paypal which manages the conversion for you, so when you click through to the Paypal screen it should tell you how much will be deducted in your local currency. The Founding membership is not a recurring fee it is a once off payment :)

Hope this helps !

Thanks. I bought your software. I do have a feedback on the tutorial: there's a place where you say this:

"Clicking this icon, or using it's short-cut key "

The correct form for the possessive pronoun there is "its" no apostrophe. You wouldn't say he's, right? It's a changed spelling based on what the word is doing in the sentence. Likewise, its is the changed spelling for "it" when "it" owns something. It's is "it is".

Hope this feedback is helpful.

Probably better to ask on the pangur forums, though pompke will find it here. Now this is probably too late but you can undo. So now your option is probably to see if pompke can restore it from their backups, but that might not always mean you have all your lost 5000 words.

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Just went over to the PangurPad site for a look. It's nice, works easy in my chrome browser (didn't like my firefox, too old of a version.) The price is good; I love the idea of having my writing software work through my browser. However.....no corkboard / storyboard view, as in scrivener. I just can't express enough how much I like that feature of scrivener...enough that, when I have to be away from my own computer to write, I compose in 750words.com, and copy paste into scrivener later. Scrivener has some serious problems in the windows version (crashes), but the abiliy to organize the story via the corkboard makes it worth dealing with. I would love love love if PangurPad could incorporate that feature. Then it would just be about Purrrrrfect. :-D Thanks for letting us preview the software.

PangurPad just deleted 2,050 words of work from my novel saved within the program. I saved it every thousand words, and it autosaved multiple times. But when I logged back in to get more work done it was gone. I am pretty angry right now.

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

Ok there could be two issues here. If you are working on different computers sometimes one will only retrieve the infomation it has stored, not checking pangurpad for your updates. This can be fixed with a hard refresh.

The other issue, much rarer, is a loss on their end. But they have helped the few people who have had those problems very promptly by restoring from backups they keep, which should have most of your words if you save that regularly.

This is a problem which would be better adressed in the Pangurpad forums and please, no one is at fault do not be too angry.

Re: PangurPad writing software in your browser

I do apologize for this, I was just a bit freaked out- This is my first time attempting nanowrimo, so losing a days worth of work kinda threw me into complete panic mode. The issue was addressed on there end, and the administrators were very nice about how it was handled. But in short I do recommend saving the information on a word document as well. My issue could have been averted if i would have done that for my own backup. (Something for a first time novelist to learn early I suppose, hehehehe)

Pangur pad was very useful for me when I was at school, I had a few two hour long breaks between classes which I would spend writing in the schools computer lounge. It was nice not having to tote around my big clunky laptop everywhere I went. It has a very useful timeline feature as well. It also has a very nice feature where you can put a quick writing goal up- it helped me keep motivated to get my 1677 words in at the very least each day.

Hehehe, I guess I should have put my freakout under nanowrimo ate my soul XD sorry again about that!

In the Orient young bulls are tested for the fight arena in a certain manner. new york escorts Each is brought to the ring and allowed to attack a picador who pricks them with a lance. new york escort The bravery of each bull is then rated with care according to the number of times he demonstrates his willingness to charge in spite of the sting of the blade. ny escorts Henceforth will I recognize that each day I am tested by life in like manner. If I persist, if I continue to try, if I continue to charge forward, I will succeed. ny escort
