Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Hi Everyone,

I'm Steve Shepard, the developer of Storyist—a novel writing environment for Mac and iPad. It's NaNoWriMo time again, and I couldn't be more excited.

Since last November, Storyist for Mac has continued to evolve. This year, as in previous years, you can download a special NaNoWriMo edition, use it for free in November, and get 25% off at the Storyist store if you decide you'd like to continue using it after NaNoWriMo (details below).

But the big news this year is that Storyist for iPad is now available in the App Store.

Storyist for iPad

If you've got an iPad, you know that it could be a great writing device: it's portable, elegant, and has great battery life. Storyist for iPad adds the necessary writing tools so you can create, review, and revise your work wherever inspiration strikes.

Storyist for iPad provides:

A rich text editor with support for fonts, colors, comments, images, headers, footers, and style sheets.

Color-coded index cards.

Customizable plot, character, setting, and section sheets, so you can sketch out your story elements and track them through the manuscript.

Virtual and Bluetooth keyboard support.

Easy import and export of Storyist, RTF, Plain Text, and Final Draft FDX files via Dropbox, iTunes, and the Open In menu.

One-tap Dropbox sync, so you can quickly access your projects when and where you need them.

Live word count, so you can update your stats here at the NaNoWriMo site.

Storyist for iPad and Storyist for Mac use the same file format, so you could, for example, write in Storyist for Mac at your writing desk and then bounce your project to your iPad to take to a write-in or to make some setting notes on location.

Your novel is always with you. Now your writing tools can be too.

Storyist for Mac

Like the iPad version, Storyist for Mac has great writing tools, including:

A full-featured word processor with support for headers, footers, and style sheets.

Customizable plot, character, setting, and section sheets.

A collage view, so you can visualize the relationships between your story elements.

Full-screen mode, so you can shut out the distractions and write.

A themeable workspace manager, so you can customize the fonts, colors, and background images of your writing environment to suite your style.

Color-coded index cards.

Live word count.

It also has some great self-publishing features:

Kindle Export. Export your NaNoWriMo manuscripts to Kindle format for reading on Kindle devices and software, and for publishing on Amazon.com. (Screencast: Publishing on Amazon.com with Storyist)

ePub Export. Create ePub-formatted eBooks for reading on an iPad, iPhone, Nook, Sony Reader, or other device that supports the ePub standard, and for publishing on Apple's iBookstore. (Screencast: Creating ePub for iPad)

And like Storyist for iPad, Storyist for Mac works great with Dropbox. Just put your Storyist project in your Dropbox folder, and Dropbox will instantly back up and sync your project to all your computers.

You’ll find more information on these and other features on the Storyist site at http://storyist.com/nanowrimo. There you can download a special NaNoWriMo trial version that will let you use Storyist for Mac for free throughout November (and into December).

If you decide to purchase Storyist for Mac, you can get it for 25% off through December 12th using the coupon code "NANOWRIMO11" at the online store.

Happy Noveling,

I loveeeeee Storyist and have used it the past two Novembers. You have helped me with technical issues last December and I absolutely love your support team. But again I am having issues... I tried downloading this morning and it is still only showing the 15 day trial edition. Is there some special link that I need to go to or is the trial edition for nanoists still not up?

Hi Colosseum,

Thanks for the kind words!

I just posted the Storyist NaNoWriMo edition a few minutes ago.

You can find the download link at http://storyist.com/nanowrimo/. It's in the Special Offers section at the bottom.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

I used a different Mac centered program for last year's NaNo, and was very happy with it. The main shortcoming for me was the lack of real iPad support -- but no one had that at that time, so there was no reason to try a different program.

Then Steve came out with his Storyist for iPad a few months ago. I know that a writer should only need a pen and paper to write -- even a computer is a luxury, much less a computer and a separate program for the iPad -- but what can I say? I wanted to be able to write interchangeably on my iPad and on my Mac, with a minimum of go-between fuss.

So my first step was to download a desktop Storyist demo. It is somewhat different in its operation than the program I was using. For me, neither one is "better" or "worse" than the other -- they are simply, as I said, different, with some elements of each I really like and some I don't. The distinctions between these programs have been endlessly debated elsewhere, and I think they are both worthwhile, so I'm not going to take sides on that debate. However, I was sufficiently impressed with the Storyist desktop to invest in the iPad app, in the hopes that the iPad integration -- the one indisputable distinction between Storyist and the program I was using -- would work smoothly. (My old program had a kind of piecemeal process by which individual sections could be exported and imported for editing through third party programs, but it wasn't, for me at least, as straightforward and all-encompassing as Storyist's method.)

Storyist for iPad lived up to my hopes. I am very, very happy with the iPad integration. One's whole manuscript, with supporting character, section, etc. notes, can be easily, quickly, and seemlessly transferred back and forth through DropBox. I am very impressed, and for me, this is the killer feature that really sets Storyist apart. I realized that (unlike some fervent partisans out there) I could be very happy using either my previous program or Storyist. But it is the impressive iPad integration that has prompted me to make the switch from one very good program to another.

So in sum: if you do not have an iPad, or don't care about iPad integration, then you can ignore this whole post (sorry I waited until now to tell you that). I certainly don't want to try to sway you between two excellent programs, and the best way to figure out which is most suited for you is to try them both out. But if, as I do, you care strongly about comprehensive and simple iPad integration, I just wanted to let everyone know that I, at least, am very happy with my switch to Storyist.

Oh, there's a story writing software for the iPad? MUST HAVE, NOW!

Finally someone realized that there was this big, gaping hole to fill... I usually write in coffee shops because at my house I'm too distracted. I also live in too different places, so having a portable writing device is essential for me. Therefore, I bought the iPad 2 last Spring. But then I noticed that my current writing program didn't have an iPad app. I'm definitely gonna try Storyist, and if I like it, I might keep using it.

Have been using the iPad for all my writing for over year now.

When I found the Storyist version for the iPad it was the answer. To be able to carry everything with me wherever I went was perfect and not being tied to the iMac was the unexpected bonus for me. Have been using it all the time since I started.

There was an update released last night and the word count is great.

Hope this helps you in your dession making.

I use Scrivener on the mac platform and am interested in possibly using Storyist on the ipad. Does anybody have experience in sync'ing the two? Last year I used Simplenote on the ipad, which syncs reasonably nicely, but I would like a more featureful ipad app to work in. I realize that this involves competition issues, so its kinda strange.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Quick review here...downloaded iPad and nanowrimo version of storyist Mac app last night to try them out. First impression is really good. Was using another Mac program, which is good, but just seemed to box me in to a workflow I was not comfortable with. Ideally I'd prefer to do most of my word banging on the iPad using either the on screen keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard but, my old program did not have a native iPad app (did have some apps it worked with but not seamlessly). Within 5 minutes, was able to convert my current project (which will be my nanowrimo effort) from my old program to storyist Mac then sync it (via Dropbox) and open it up in the iPad. well done.

Since I'm still in the planning phases of my nanowrimo project, not yet banging out 1700 wpd yet (just outlines, scene lists, character briefs), this short review is a bit premature, but I am very encouraged with storyist so far...will update as I go along.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Dean,

From my short experience with storyist (see my post below), syncing between storyist mac and storyist ipad seems to be quite seamless between Mac and iPad. Everything on my Mac came over with no issues and updates back and forth worked well. Only issue I see so far (and it may be I am missing something) is that I don't see outline view on iPad app, which (for me at least) is not a show stopper. I did not try and sync scrivener projects with storyist iPad app, but I don't think that is going to work since the formats are different. I just copied my stuff out of scrivener into the nanowrimo version (i.e. free until dec 15) of storyist Mac.

Like every other ipad writing app, the only thing it's missing is the ability to add your own words tonthe dictionary, which can help when you're writing a fantasy novel full of made upnwords and strange names.

I use iawriter when i'm producing original writing, but only in chunks because it has no formatting or organizational capabilities. I paste those into storyist, where i can clean them up, organize them and move them around fluidly i n the overall plot structure.

Took me about two hours to put my existing 300 odd pages of work into storyist, set up chapters and sections... And then the notecard view waa incredibly helpful for reworking and reorganizing stuff

Can't reall complain about lack of discount when its only $9.99 ! Great app!

Hi Maureen,

It sounds like you're viewing a .story file in the Dropbox app. If so, just tap the Open In button in the Dropbox toolbar (the one with the arrow), and select Storyist. This will open your Storyist project (or RTF file) in Storyist for iPad.

However, since Storyist for iPad has Dropbox support built into it, there is a much easier way to sync. Just turn on one-tap sync as described in the Dropbox sync how-to, and tap the Sync button in the Storyist for iPad toolbar.

Newer files in your Dropbox folder are transfered to Storyist for iPad and newer files in Storyist for iPad are transfered to your Dropbox folder.

If your running iOS 5:

To add a new word to the dictionary, tap Settings, then navigate to General > Keyboard. At the bottom of the screen, you should see a Shortcuts heading. Don’t be put off by the name; this is the place to teach iOS new words, but it’s called shortcuts because it’s primarily used to create typing shortcuts, similar to TextExpander. Next, tap the Add New Shortcut… button. You’ll be taken to a new screen with two text fields, labelled Phrase and Shortcut. The important one is Phrase, at the top. This is where you need to type the word you want to add to your dictionary. The Shortcut field, as it says, is optional. That’s where you’d add a shortcut that expands into the phrase you added (more on that in a minute). After typing in a word or phrase in the first field, tap Save at the top of the screen and your word will be added to the auto-correct dictionary. Now, when you type that word anywhere on your device, auto-correct should leave it alone, and if you spell it slightly wrong, it should suggest that word, too.

Okay, I've downloaded Storyist on my MacMini and I've been using the character sheets, plot sheets, the notebook sheets, etc. I have a question: how do you create separate scenes within chapters, and how do you create more than chapter 2? I build my stories scene by scene, and sometimes I don't have all the plot items known at the beginning of a project. So, how do I just create scene by scene (in Text mode and not on a note card or cork board view)?

BTW, I did print out the getting started guide (all 66 pages... free, of course...LOL) and I cannot find the answer.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Hi BlackScorpio,

Thanks for trying Storyist.

To start a new section, just type a section separator (the "#" character followed by a carriage return) and continue typing in the new section. Storyist will create a section entry in the outline for you. There is a default style (the Section Separator style) in the templates to center the separator for you.

To start a new chapter, just type the chapter title and apply the "Chapter Title" style.

If typing is your preferred method for creating chapters and sections (it is for me), you'll definitely want to turn on the tab and return shortcuts in the preferences. These shortcuts (borrowed from screenwriting) make it easy to add chapters and sections by typing a key or two.

Hi Steve,

I made the switch from Scrivener to Storyist I think 3 NaNoWriMos ago, and I am still a happy user, all lined up to get my 5th book done this year. That said, writing is such a sublimely personal thing, that i am only happy that there are so many options for software to get it 'just right'
Quite happy with the iPad sidekick, as it will help me to squeeze out every bit of free time in November, as it will be a BIG challenge to get it done this year. Inspiration I have, I think, but time....

As a quick workflow tip: I use cmd-return to create section separator, and cmd-shift-return to create a new chapter by just combining the commands in Storyist with the automation of Keyboard Maestro. Works great for me!

Good luck to all this year!

In order to submit the document there - it's needs to be in Word format or else it won't be accepted. If I create in Storyist - will I be able to export into a Microsoft word doc? I looked not the storyist.com site but couldn't find anything on this point.

"To submit your novel e-mail a Word document to sbaline@politics-prose.com (Manuscripts submitted in alternate formats will not be judged.)"

I presume storyist is compatible with the Nanowrimo format.

Hi Cassandra,

Storyist can export to a Microsoft Word (.rtf, .doc, or .docx) doc. It's straight forward, and you'll find info on how to do that in the "Exporting and Sharing Your Work" section of the User's Guide.

Validating your word count here at the site is even easier. Just select the text in your manuscript, copy it, and paste it into the validation form and you'll be all set.

Thanks for checking out Storyist. The NaNoWriMo Mac edition is the full version, not a stripped down version.

Unfortunately, the App Store doesn't allow trial versions, so I'm unable to offer one for Storyist for iPad. Thanks so much!

Hi. I think a poster here or on storyist forums said it best - storyist is geared to novelists/screenwriters, scrivener is a writing tool for writers - fiction and non-fiction. If I was writing a textbook, I'd use scrivener, writing a novel I'd use storyist.

I've been practicing with storyist for the last week or so and I feel like I've finally gotten the hang of most of it. The only thing I'm still wondering about (and hoping someone on here can answer) is there any shortcut key to make a strike through? Like how bold is command+b and italics are command+i.

If anyone knows anything I'd be really, really thankful!

I was going to use Evernote but the iPad app has some formatting issues. Discovered Storyist, downloaded NaNoWriMo trial and iPad version. Wonderful! I can't believe how seamless syncing is. Writing is a pleasure (using a BT keyboard with the iPad). I'll probably buy the full Mac version but just want to give it a bit longer.

Two quick, I hope quick, questions. And I looked for answers first in the user guides. even printed them both out. Help from any one appreciated!

I can not for the life of me figure out
1) import images into my character sketches
2) i've added a bunch of fields to my character sketches and I managed to save as a template which works fine for new characters. But is there anyway to get those fields for my already created characters in one swoop or do i have to either a. manually add them or b. delete the characters and recreate them?
3) I created a folder of characters but can't figure out how to get character sheets I've already created into the folders.

Thanks in advance!
Cassandra
ps - i tried to find answers at the storyist forums - can one only post there if one has bought the programs? I bought for iPad but only test run on my Mac, so far....

I wish I could go back to the old version. I cannot figure out how to just click return twice as I would do in every other writing software in order to have a doubled space between sections of paragraphs. Nothing I do works and I am beginning to regret ever telling everyone how much I enjoyed using Storyist last year. I just want to type, not have to click some stupid style element every time I use the return key. I could have written the notecards by hand and just used Pages to type the ordinary way. I'm stuck at 248 words because I cannot get to the next line unless I fake some stuff and then delete it after typing where I want to type.

This page illustrates my frustration pretty well, in the section called "Storyist's Manual Options."

I get that contemporary software wants me to format paragraphs instead of just using the double hard, even though it really has no idea whether I want to send something to an editor or not. Well, fine. I want the space between my paragraphs. How do I get that with this?

I can massage those style elements all I want to remove indentations and font changes, but I still can't separate my paragraphs the way I'd like because no documentation I can find will tell me how.

Where did my manuscript go???

I downloaded the Nano version of Storyist last night and used it to write about 1300 words today. All good... but now when I click on anything in the Manuscripts section (i.e. my first 2 chapters) the program will not take me there. I can view chapter notes and character summaries but none of the text I wrote. I can find bits of my written text in the search function, so I know it's there somewhere, but can't go to it. How can I get my manuscript back? Please help!

Are you running on Lion? If so, perhaps the MANUSCRIPTS category is hidden. Try hovering over the MANUSCRIPTS label. If the word "Show" appears, click it. You should then be able to see your manuscript.

Hi Cassmetz,

Happy to help.

1) To add images to character sheets, do one of the following:

* Drag an image to the character icon.

* Double click the character icon (on Leopard and later) and then click Choose when the dialog appears to choose an image from disk.

2) There isn't a way to apply field templates to characters you've already created, so you'll need to add them manually.

3) To move character sheets to a folder you've created, select the sheets in the Project view and drag them to the folder.

You're welcome to join us at the Storyist forums. It's a great group of writers and you don't need to be a customer to join.

Thanks Steve. I'm on OS 10.5.8. I sent an email to Support. This morning I tried exporting the project to Word, and thankfully the whole manuscript made it into the exported file so I now have the text -- but I still can't access it in Storyist. Hopefully Support will solve the problem so I can go back to using it.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

I LOVE using Storyist on my iPad so far. That's how I'm doing my writing this year for NaNo. Unfortunately, I don't have an actual Mac computer at home, so I haven't yet been able to try out the desktop version of the software. I'm due for a new computer next spring, so I'm actually considering finally making the move to a Mac because of Storyist (and because it seems like most of the programs I like seem to be made for Mac, rather than PC).

I had been using Scrivener, which I loved. However, the ability to compose my novel directly on my iPad has completely converted me to Storyist. I'd buy the software immediately for the desktop if only I could get it to run on my PC!

Thanks so much! This app definitely fills an enormous hole in the world of iPad writing apps. Now, back to NaNo!

I don't have a Mac, but I bought Storyist for my iPad. I'm going to be on a cruise for 10 days this month, so I wanted to be able to write on that device, since it's very portable and convenient, and this seemed like the best option available. I love it! It's very intuitive and easy to use, and I love that it's incredibly simple to sync to Dropbox, so you always have a backup in case something goes wrong. Props to Steve for a great piece of software. If I ever get a Mac, I will be buying that version for sure.

Thank you, thank you for Storyist

I use Scrivener to organize some fiction and non fiction and it does a great job of keeping me organized and makes it easy to pick up where I left off.

Storyist takes that one better. The word count/timer tool is keeping me on task. I work from home and can't afford to stay engrossed in my new novel all day. I set reasonable goals and have found that writing for 30 minutes at a time works for me. Sure I can set a kitchen timer and use it with Scrivener, but having the timer right there on the page really gives me incentive to keep writing and to stay focused. (If Scrivener has the timer I haven't found it yet!)

My only issue with Storyist is the sidebar isn't showing my new chapters and adding items like scenes and plot points isn't that self explanatory. So...I guess I will have to actually break down and read the directions at some point. :)

Hello Steve -- I've just found this thread and wish I'd prepped for Nanowrimo like all these pros and gotten the software worked out ten days ago! At anyrate, i've been trying out Scrivener on my Mac for 6 months, but am no way married yet, since I still am on the learning curve, and also am just about to upgrade to LION and OS5 for my IPAD.....question -- can I download the IPAD trial version before upgrading to the OS5 -- ? I was going to wait to do all the upgrading until after the nanowrimo -- the upgrading process may take hours, and of course I'm terrified I'll crash my computer or Ipad in the process...

Also, please answer everyone's question about the syncing between Scrivener on the Mac, and storyist on the IPAD (I have IPAD #1).....

Soryist does sound wonderful with this timer feature.....I'm eager to check it out -- although I have several projects I'd have to move over from Scrivener...

Thanks daisymaebelle. Glad the word count/timer helps keep the words flowing!

The sidebar is built from the document outline, so if chapters aren't appearing in the outline, you just need to apply a heading-level style to the chapter titles. The Novel template has a "Chapter Title" style set up for that purpose. If you'd like some help with this, please feel free to send me at email at the support address (or a NaNo Mail here at the site).

Hi Dotsela,

You can certainly download the trial version of Storyist for Mac, which works great with Lion. Unfortunately, there isn't a trial version of the iPad app as Apple doesn't support trial versions in the App Store. If you want to know more about its features, the manual is available on the support site, and I'd be happy to answer questions.

As for syncing, I know that Scrivener has a mechanism for importing and exporting RTF files, and Storyist can edit RTF files directly. I don't have any direct experience with this, though, and need to do a little research myself to answer that question.

I'm not really sure where to put this so I'll put it here. I'm not sure if any other users of storyist on the iPad have experienced this but after backing up my novel to dropbox about 30 minutes ago. it saved it as a blank page and every other folder and file on my storyist just vanished.
Cue major panic.

Thankfully my boyfriend whilst I was crying my eyes out (!) managed to restore a save I did from last night, losing me only 1200 words rather than 6200 :(

I don't know if this is a known issue or bug or just something I managed to press? It wasn't even delete as I know it prompts you if you're really sure about deleting and is something hard to accidently just do with the slip of a finger.

thanks for any feedback if you can

Hi Desdi,

It's not a know issue. If you like help, please send some mail to the support address and we'll take a look right away.

Dropbox saves a revision each time you sync, and restoring from a previous version is as simple as going to the Dropbox website, selecting the file, choosing "Previous Versions" from the pulldown menu, and selecting the version you want to restore.

If you haven't done so, visit the Storyist panel in the Settings app and turn on one-tap syncing. This give you a sync button on the My Projects screen, and pressing it syncs all of your files with Dropbox.

Yikes -
I am missing words too! First the chapter about 3000 words I wrote today (thankfully I had cut and pasted them into an email to myself so I was able to cut and past that back, though the formatting was all screwed up.

Now my chapter 1 is totally missing!

I just looked and it's on my iPad, but i have no idea what I did or what is going on....I've got different versions with different components I think.....I'm heading to the dropbox website now.

gulp.

Spellcheck language

Hi Steve,

I'm new to Storyist and am enjoying your software so much, I've already purchased it!

Is it possible to change the spell check language? If so, how do I do this? I found a similar query on your forums about iPads, but am working on a MacBook.

Being from New Zealand, it's picking me up on my colonial UK spelling ;). This is proving a little distracting.

Thanks snagglewordz,

To change the spell check language on the Mac version:

1) Open a text file.

2) Choose Edit > Spelling and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar

3) Change the the popup at the bottom from "Automatic by Language" to the language you want the spell checker to use.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Hi cassmetz,

Happy to help if you'd like. Send an email to the support address with the details. A couple of quick thoughts:

* It sounds like you're talking about Storyist for Mac. If so, you can can check the automatic backups (File > Backups) for previous versions of the project in addition to Dropbox. If something was inadvertently deleted, you'll probably find it in the backups.

* If you want to preserve the format when pasting from Mail try Edit > Paste and Match Style instead of Edit > Paste. Edit > Paste does preserve the mail formatting.

* If you've changed your project on both Mac and iPad, Storyist won't try to merge the changes for you, and you won't see a project that has changes from both unless you've made them. Storyist for iPad WILL save a copy of the version modified on the iPad and then download the new Dropbox version, noting the conflict in the sync status window.

Hope this helps.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Good morning
thank you for this. Especially 2.

I've only been writing on the Mac so far (so I'm not sure that your point 3 came into play - and I"m not sure I understand but maybe I don't need to since I"m mostly - for now - writing on the Mac).

But the chapter that went awol was on my iPad, so I was able to cut and paste it back in. and that worked (save for the formatting, so again thanks for that tip.)

I still don't know what happened, but I have all the text I wrote. When I went to the drop box I could see what time I saved versions as well as auto save, but I couldn't see how big the files were in order to be able to discern when (if not how) the chapter text disappeared on me. And I wasn't sure even if I did find it in the dropbox how to safely integrate it back into what I current had.

It happened twice - disappearing text - yesterday. I'd feel better if i knew how, but at least I'm whole again.

two follow up questions - where do i find the support address? And how do I correct a misspelled word? (speaking of spelling below with snagglewordz) My misspellings are highlighted but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get them corrected.

I'm ready to buy this software. Your responsiveness has been a factor. Thanks.

* The support address is listed on the Storyist support page along with the user's guides and links to the forums.

* To correct misspellings, right click (or tap on the iPad) on the underlined misspelling and choose from the suggestions.

Hi allrightalready,

I keep my project in my Dropbox folder on my Mac and edit from there too. The only thing you need to be aware of is if you have the project open on your Mac and you sync unsaved changes from your iPad, Dropbox will move your open Mac project aside and update the version in your Dropbox folder with the version from your iPad. At that point, just choose File > Save As on your Mac and save the open project somewhere until you can decide which version you want to keep.

Hi Dorothy,

Sorry, I missed your follow-up question!

(The best way to get answers to Storyist questions, BTW, is to send email to the support address or post in the Storyist Forums).

Storyist for Mac 2.3.4 works great with Lion, and Storyist for iPad 1.1.1 with iOS 5. The only thing I'm aware of for iOS 5 is that Apple no longer supports apps like "Print to PDF" that let you AirPrint to a PDF file, so if you rely on those apps to create PDF, you'll want to stick with iOS 4 a while longer.

I'm starting NaNoWriMo for the first time and I decided to use my iPad as a writing tool. I initially thought of evernote, but saw this as a possible other choice. So I got it.

So far it's ok, but I'm not so happy with it always going back to the top when you leave and come back. Also for some reason I started writing and my story and characters can't be moved to the 'desktop' so I can have my own folder. I created it but can't really tie it back.

I put it up with drop box and back down, but lost all the sections (the text was there, just not the sections. I used the RTF. And of course there is no way to transfer a folder. And when I tried a move of the folder, it only goes back to Getting Started folder.

I'm ignoring it for now, theres time after NaNoWriMo.

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

I picked up Storyist for iPad to use for this Nano. Although my ongoing battle with iPad automatic capitalization and punctuation insertion (which weren't built for formatting dialogue) is a little maddening sometimes, Storyist is working out great. At the end of Nano I'll probably swing by the Storyist forums with a wishlist of suggestions. :)

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

I love the best from both worlds. I love Scrivener, and I've used it for two years (and I still use it, by the way), but I also love writing on my iPad. Storyist for iPad is by far the best writing app right now. There are other great apps, of course, but, for exemple, even when my novel is not heavily formatted, I do use italics. Storyist is the one software where I can use italics, and still having noveling features, such as index cards, outline view, notes, and character/location/plot sheets, which, by the way, are great on Storyist for Mac as well. But on the Mac, well… I still love Scrivener, probably because I've used it for so long and it adapts great to my workflow. I'm doing heavy writing on the iPad, for many reasons, including that my MBP is right now on repair, so for the next few days I won't have my computer at hand at all. This is definitely the best writing app for iPad, and a full novel can be written here. But, if you don't want to give up to Scrivener, you can always copy/paste and keep updated both documents…

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Weird Issue? I've been using Storyist and I like it very much. Nice interface with NaNo, love having cards, images, etc. (Paid full price and no regrets!)

However, when I copy and paste my manuscript into Pages, it gives me about double the word count and page count that I had in Storyist. It doesn't do this when I turn it into a Word doc, so I'm puzzled. My preference is to draft in Storyist and do my final format in Pages, but I'm baffled now as to what my actual word count will be when I get ready to send this to my editor.

Is there something I'm missing in the transfer?

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

Hi writerwoman,

Both Storyist and Word count hyphenated words (for example, "write-in") as one word and Pages seems to count them as two words. This will account for minor differences in word count, but unless you use a LOT of hyphenated words in your manuscript, it won't account for double the count. I can't imagine Pages would be off by that much. Perhaps you inadvertently pasted twice?

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

This was my first NaNo and I decided to go with Storyist because of the availability of the dedicated iPad app. I did, indeed, write the my entire 50k (not counting the outline and character sheets) on the iPad tablet with external blue tooth keyboard. I am so glad that you have the iTunes upload feature because I am not a fan of DropBox. Also, it was super easy to upload and validate my novel after I reached 50k.

As a treat to myself for winning NaNo, and to support NaNo sponsors, I have just officially purchased Storyist for Mac plus the printed manual (sorry tree, but I have 40 year-old eyes!) While I was writing, I didn't want to to take the time to figure out the little things like italics. But now I can relax. I just wanted to thank you for making your software easy enough for me to wade in during the hectic NaNo month.

Hey there!
I'm not the computer-literate person, so hopefully this isn't too pitiful a question...
I have an iPad and would love to get this program, but I synch to a PC at night. If I want to save my work to my computer, would I need to save it to Pages and Dropbox it, or ... how would I go about saving to my PC? (I really like the idea of this program for my iPad since I write away from my house)
Thanks for the help!

Re: Storyist writing software for Mac and iPad

You would be able to save it as RTF directly to your Dropbox folder. Word will open the RTF file, with all the format you have set, such as bold, italics, etc. But once you edit that RTF file, you would have to save it to the Storyist Dropbox folder, in order to open it and edit it from there. You may loose something in between, for example, if you set some titles with specific styles. Styles is the main feature the app uses to create a proper outline, and the index cards feature. I would recommend you to save the RTF files only as a backup, and don't edit the file at all on the PC until you want to do something else with it, such as create a PDF or a formatted version.

Perhaps you should pay a visit to Storyist forums on their official website. You'll find more information there, and perhaps other users who also have PC. I own both Storyist for Mac and iPad; and there are a few things that I set from the Mac version, such as new paragraph styles. I don't know if there's a plan to bring that feature into the iPad app, and perhaps you don't need it at all. Besides that, so far, because of the formatting features, and the organization features, it's undoubtedly the best app to write on the iPad.
