a useful feature would be being able to link to other profiles. For example, say under the friends I list Joe, Fred and Tammy, I should be able to click on tammy and go right to her character profile. this would also work for major events, like trip to disneyland 2010 and then you have a description of what happen during that trip. just a suggestion.

Ok, so I downloaded it and personally loving the program so far. It was exactly what I needed honestly. My only problem is I can't figure out how to add the note cards at all. I'm probably blind in trying to figure this out at that but if someone can tell me how to do it that would be helpful.

Hi, Kalio_chan. Go to Properties > NoteCard Type/Templates tab. Then follow these detailed instructions: · Selecting NoteCards for the current book -- The top portion of this screen displays a grid of the available Master NoteCard Types, which was described in an earlier Help topic. To assign NoteCard Types to your new (current) book, you need to select the desired type(s) from the top grid and Add them to the bottom grid. To select a Master NoteCard Type, simply place your cursor on the desired type and click to highlight it. Next, click the "Add" button to assign the selected Master Type to your book. Continue this process until you have added all the NoteCard types you'd like to use in this book. You can use up to nine (9) NoteCards per book with "Plot" being the default first card. · Re-sequencing the NoteCard display order -- The up and down arrow buttons, located on the far right of the Book Properties screen, allow you to change the display order of your book's NoteCard Types. These cards, in the order you select, will show up as tabbed NoteCards in Composition mode and "index-card style" NoteCards in Storyboard mode (WriteWay Professional Edition). The "Plot" card cannot be moved from the first position. · NoteCard Title Colors -- In Storyboard mode, NoteCards are displayed in visual format, like index cards arranged on a bulletin board. To help you differentiate the numerous card types in use with a given book, WriteWay allows you to assign and maintain unique colors to the title bars of each NoteCard using this screen. The only NoteCard color that cannot be changed is the Plot card, the sole required card in WriteWay. Plot is set to a fixed color, gray. To change the color of a NoteCard Type, simply click on the Title Color bar of the NoteCard you wish to change. A color palette will appear, from which you can make your selection(s). · Using a Default Template for NoteCards -- In an earlier Help topic, you learned about setting Default Master Templates for your NoteCards. On this screen, you will now apply those master templates to the NoteCards used for your new (current) book. To apply or change a template, click the Default Template bar for the NoteCard you wish to change. A drop-down box will appear, showing you the available Master Templates for the card you selected. Click to highlight the desired template. Note: WriteWay comes preloaded with Master Templates called SAMPLE. If you have not added any templates of your own, your choices here will be None (no template), or SAMPLE. · Template Apply Selection -- Now that you have selected a NoteCard Template, decide on the application of that template. The "Apply" column contains drop-down selections of "New" "All" or "None." By clicking the selection, you can either choose to have the template apply to New NoteCards (those added to your book from this point forward), None, or All. If you select All, WriteWay will automatically add the selected NoteCard Template to all of your existing book NoteCards and all new NoteCards. · Reapply flag -- Next to the Template Apply selection is a checkbox field labeled "Reapply." You would check this flag only if you have made modifications to a NoteCard Template and wish to apply those changes to your existing template selection. For example, let's say that within your Plot NoteCards, you are using a Template called "Romance Plot." After you began work on your book, you decided to add a new field to the template. The template itself remains the same--Romance Plot--but the contents of the template has been modified. In order to apply the new layout to your book's existing NoteCards, you would need to check the "Reapply" box on the NoteCard Types/Templates tab in Book Properties. · Master NoteCard Types/Templates -- You can also access your NoteCard Types and Templates by using the toolbar button on top of the Properties: NoteCards Type/Templates screen. See the NoteCard Types and NoteCard Templates section of Help to learn more about setting up new Cards and Templates. There are pictures under the Help file. This looks great! I am going to wait to download the free trial till October 31st that way I can use it the whole month of Nano. If all works out, I think I found my software! I tried a different program last year and within a week had stopped using it. I didnt like that I couldnt get word counts on individual chapters let alone the whole book. Looks like this one has both!

WriteWay is what I'll be using this year. I just bought the pro version over the last month and I LOVE it! Had a couple small issues but customer service was very fast ( answered my email within 2 hours both times, by Patricia actually! ) and the suggestions she gave worked perfectly! I have never been happier with a writing program. :)

After playing with WriteWay I think something that will help me personally out, not sure if anyone else would agree, is there was a possible way to change the color scheme of it. Such as instead of just the write and light blue able to change those to colors such as dark blue, black, red, green, or any other color that would be available. It's not a big thing that would need changed right away but more cosmetic purpose only.

I never really figure out how many chapters will be in a novel until I'm writing it, so finding a way to get the plot note cards to do what I needed them to took a few minutes (I use a plot arc and go from there). The only thing that might get to me later would be that the names for the different parts of the plot are preceded by "Chapter ::insert number here::" when those won't actually be the chapters, the "scenes" will. It would be nice if, when you rename it, that it would show only the newly entered name rather than add on to it, at least for how I'm using it.

Hi, quick question...is there a way to save a synopsis? I typed one out yesterday and went to show my friend today and I cant find it anywhere. When I looked it up in the help section it talked about creating and exporting...but not saving. Any suggestions?

I'm usually not one to buy softwares, rather I use the demos and then switch back to Microsoft Word when they expire, but just from looking at this and then factoring in 50% discount after the trial use I very well may buy this one. It looks great, installing now. My language skills are terrible when I'm tired, I hope I'm not like this for my actual project!

I've download the programme and activated the demo that lasts until the 15th. I have to say, I'm seriously impressed by it. I've been fiddling around and using it for most of the day, and the more I get the hang of it the more I enjoy it. I really like the Character Profiles - that's amazing for me, because I love developing my charries and having them all in one place? Brilliant. There was one thing I did notice though. The bold button within the character profiles seems to have a bug - at least in my version. I first noticed it when trying to use the shortcuts (ctrl + b, ctrl + i, ctrl + u) and found that while the shortcut for italics and underlined worked, the one for bold didn't. When I clicked on it and then tried to write, the bold just didn't work. (Both italics and underlined do, by the way). The only way to bold a word is to highlight it and then click the bold button. Is that just me? XD

I've downloaded WriteWay a few times because I thought I was doing something wrong but every time I try to open the program I get the message, "Run-time erroor '339: Component MSCOMCTL.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." I've tried to look on the website at the FAQs & stuff but I can't find out how to fix it. I'd really love to use this product but I can't. Help please? Thanks!

Just bought the pro version. I downloaded the trial and after about 2 weeks, I decided I wanted this forever! This is a great program, and I think it would be nice for the next version to be slightly more customizable, and cleaner looking. However, it's so great! Love it! So much better than wordpad!

Hi Patricia, I'm really liking the demo version so far, and will most probably buy it by the end of November! I have a couple questions though. One thing I'd like to do, but I'm not sure if there's a place for that in WriteWay: I'd like to create a very simple map of the setting for my story. The only way I found around that so far is to do it with a separate tool, save it as jpeg and then attach it to a research page. I'd love it if there was an integrated drawing tool, and a tab from which I could easily open my map at anytime. Is there such a thing and if there isn't, do you plan on adding it in a later version? Also when I click on the Characters tab to check something and then go back to the Composition, it takes me back to the beginning of the scene. It forces me to scroll down and tempts my inner editor to change every other word! Is there a setting I can adjust so it takes me back to the place I stopped writing? Thanks a lot for this helpful piece of software!

I downloaded the Pro trial a few days ago, and had a bit of a play, but not much more. Anyway, today I started to do some serious research for my novel, and so am falling in love with the Research function. I now have folders for different areas I am researching, with pages for individual topics within the area, and I am able to add the links to any useful sites I find, and I can access these sites from within the programme. I am loving it! I will definitely be buying this program when I get my credit card stuff sorted out.

Hi, I'm having some problems with WriteWay and I was wondering if you could help me Ms. Rasey. I installed the software maybe a week ago and it's worked fine this whole time. I had a computer crash and now when I click the logo to open the program I get this screen. Run-time Error '339': Component label 'txole151.ocx' or one of it's dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid. So I figured I'd reinstall the software since apparently something has gone missing. When I try to reinstall it tells me I need to first uninstall, commonsense you know? But Writeway is not in my program files folder, it's not under my add/remove programs tab, and under the folder named 'uninstall' the only files are three jpeg images, a dat file and an xml file. The only option I can think of is to install the software on another computer and put my backed up folders on that computer but then I won't be able to work on my novel on my laptop which would be a major inconvenience to me. Any tips?

I downloaded WriteWay about a week or so ago and now that I've played around with it and read through the Help section, I really like it. I'm a little concerned because it says demo is good for another 24 days (as of yesterday). Should I purchase it before the 24 days are up (I'm really leaning toward purchasing). Once I start writing, will the word count reflect just the writing for the book, not all the background stuff? Also, will I be able to upload it to the NaNo site for the official word count? (I'm hoping to hit the 50K mark) Thank you.

I am trying out the demo and so far I am enjoying it a lot. I'd like to be able to see my research and my work at the same time, side by side. Is it possible to have a split view in order to do that? I love the fact that it supports several languages.

Hello! Quick question.... The demo says it is a 30-day free version but if I want to download it now and get comfortable with it before the challenge, can I do that and still have the demo until 12/15 like Gary indicated? How do you extend the 30-day time frame? Please advise? Thanks- Debi

I downloaded WriteWay this morning mostly because I needed to find SOME way to keep my continuity regarding characters info straight. I am LOVING the ability to create character profiles! Not sure yet if this is enough to justify a purchase, but we will see as November goes by. Thanks for the awesome free trial = )

It looks like a great program--but the preview feature doesn't work. And when I try and open Book Properties I get a "run time error 339' comdlg32.ocx is not registered, missing or invalid. I tried reinstalling but it didn't help.

I downloaded WriteWay a few days ago and am enjoying all the features thus far. I do have a question, though. Is there a way to print out my notes in the tabbed sections along the bottom of my document (Chapter Scenes, Plot, Conflict, Character, etc.)? Yay! I'm so glad Write Way is giving a special offer this year! I love this program demo, how simple it is to learn and how natural it is to use. This is something I definitely want to purchase. Being able to see the organization tree beside the writing is helpful indeed, and having the notecards right there visible while writing is handy. Kudos for a great product.

I'm a bit confused with adding chapters to the act...it keeps renaming chapter 1 to 2, and the new chapter as 1. I've tried moving it around, I've tried renaming and nothing seems to work. I want chapter 1 to remain as chapter 1, then 2, etc. I'd really like this program to be something I get comfortable with...I do like the character profiles (which was very easy) but if I can't set up the chapters correctly...

Hi MuffinPuffin. I've experienced the problem you're having, and discovered what to do to get the chapters to create properly. 1) Highlight Chapter 1, NOT Act 1. 2) Click on create a chapter. You should see it create Chapter 2, in proper sequence, immediately. 3) Name your chapter. 4) Highlight Chapter 2 when you want to create chapter 3. 5) Click on create a chapter, and name chapter 3. 6) And so on for as many chapters as you want to create. 7) Use this same procedure for creating scene 1, scene 2, etc., within your chapters.

I downloaded the trial version of WriteWay and I'm finding I like it very much. It's so wonderful to have some kind of program like this for someone who's as scatterbrained as I am when I write. xD I haven't had any problems with downloading it or even once it's running. I'm hoping that I can afford to actually purchase the entire WriteWay program once Nano is over because it's a wonder and a dream to be using. :D

I downloaded the WriteWay demo at work today (with the permission of my supervisor! Business is slow today. :) ) After exploring and testing out the program, I must say that this is the most elegant, detailed, and easy to use writing software I've ever found. Wow! I'm incredibly impressed by this software. I've played with several other pieces of software, but so far this is the most intuitive, and has all of the features I need! The only thing that would improve the software is an iPad version.

Is there anyway to add new buttons to the 'font' toolbar? I have the 'bold', 'italic' and 'underline' buttons, but I would also really like a 'strikethrough' button, and was wondering is there was a way to add it?

HI Patricia, I'm really getting used to WriteWay and really like it! I am wondering if there is any way to export the entire manuscript as I'm writing it. I exported my first drafted scene the other day and today I wanted to export all the new writing I've done, but it seemed to only export the scenes separately. Is there any way to export everything together? I thought that would be a good way for me to back things up and then I'd be able to upload it to the NaNo site at the end for the official word count. I'm currently writing my NaNovel in this program and I'm really enjoying it. The handy notes at the bottom of the screen make it a breeze to make quick notes for later scenes, and the organisation on the side. Kudos, and thanks for the great program! Hello. I've been using the software for two days now and I'm finding it to be a brilliant tool so far. I have found one glitch - on the word count tracker. It seems to have rolled my word count from yesterday over to today and has combined both days into one bar. The bar relating to my count from yesterday has disappeared. The daily word count tracking log reports the same thing: that I did nothing yesterday but typed 4700 words today. Hmm... have I missed something? Thanks in advance.

Hi, cacoethes scribendi. WriteWay does not determine the end of a writer's day. So it will not roll into the next day, say at midnight, because some writers may write past that and want it included in the day's count. So, in order to start a new day--you must shut WriteWay down. Once you close it for the day--that is a new day for WriteWay. Then when you reopen to begin writing again, that word count goes on a new day. Let me know if that does not make sense. I have a question about the Smart Quotes, since it is throwing off my word count total (compared to how the NaNo Validator counts words). I have turned off the option, but it still is counting the quotes towards my word count. Did I do something wrong, or do I need to make up a whole new book with the Smart Quotes option off before it will stop counting quotations as words? Thanks for any and all help! I have loved using WriteWay so far, so I am hoping I can figure out how to turn off this feature because it bothers me that my word count is so different from NaNo's count =P

Hi, lunaseraph. When you turn off Smart Quotes and hit Apply, WriteWay will no longer use them in your work but will not change those already in the book. You could do a 'Find' and Replace All." Put a 'Smart Quote' in the Find button (copy and paste one from your work), and then in the Replace, put a regular quote (this can be typed in if you already shut off Smary Quotes and hit Apply. This should take them out of what you have already begun. Let me know if this helps. I just downloaded writeway to use for nano. I'm on my laptop, and have no printer, so every time I try to access the print options which is said to contain word count graphing and some other helpful non-printing features it tells me I must register a default printer in order to view this, is there any way around that?

Hello again Patricia. Have a couple questions that I can't find the answer to in WW Help. Or, I may just not be understanding it. I installed the program fine and saved the document I'm working on as an rtf file. I was able to import it no problem into WW. Maybe I wasn't ready for it to be imported. I had just been typing along in my document. I was hoping to be able to get parts of it into scenes and/or chapters. So, I just have one very large Chapter 1, Scene 1 at this point. I have tried highlighting and dragging text into a scene on the tree, to no avail. I have tried to "Add Scene" at the proper point in the document, again, no joy. I also have no been able to break text out, into a new chapter. What am I missing? Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure if this has already been answered or not - so pardon me if it has. Is it possible to download this program onto a flashdrive and then be able to use it via flashdrive on any computer? Throughout the day, I might work on anywhere from three to five different computers and it would be much easier if it was capable of running of the flashdrive rather than the computer. Either way, I am very intrigued by this program and intend to give it a try once I know whether to download it to my computer or my flashdrive. Thanks!

I downloaded the demo earlier this morning. There are things about the program I have not learned, and not yet mastered, however I am very impressed with what I am able to do using the program. With WriteWay I am able to organize my multitudinous notes in one location, and that is beyond wonderful. The character profiles, and notecards, have already helped me with getting a clearer idea of my novel's direction. And, WriteWay having the capability to read my writing out loud? Awesome! Thank you for the free demo through mid-December. I plan to purchase the professional edition. I have a question about WriteWay: is there a way to make folders for the characters, a way to collect character types together? The program puts my characters in alphabetical order based on their names, rather than their importance to the story. I got around that by adding a number before their name, so now they are listed in order of importance. I can make up some sort of letter code to group character types together, however I first wanted to find out if there is already a function on the program for doing that. Again, thank you for the opportunity to try WritePro.

Hi Patricia, I've got one for you :) I placed the timeline for my story in the Book synopsis section. 9 pages. I wanted to print page 7--and only page 7--to use for reference instead of flipping back and forth between screens. So I went to Previews, brought up the print screen, selected JUST page 7, and clicked print. It gave me page 7. Then it gave me pages 6 through 1. So I went to print again (figured I might as well have a hard copy of all 9 pages), and selected pages 8-9. It gave me both of those, but I had to cancel the operation to avoid getting pages 7 through 1 again. My computer runs with Vista (didn't have a problem downloading the program onto it). Is this normal for the print function? Having a great time with the program otherwise :D.

This program requires administrative access to the computer. Why? That completely subverts the security features that make Windows 7 a must have. That makes it a NO STARTER for me as it's very very bad programing practice. Change it so it doesn't require administrative access and I'll look at it.

Hi Patricia, I've just read through some of the comments concerning word counts. On my WriteWay I'm at 7400+ words (yea!), but when exported the manuscript to my flashdrive the word only came up at 7200+ words. Why the discrepancy? What can I do to fix this so I have an accurate count? I've also noticed as I use the program that the spell check could be a little better. I'm so used to Word with the red line to flag a misspelled word, and other helpful hints. Is there any way to improve the spell check properties? Other than that, I'm really enjoying WriteWay; I keep finding other little things that the program does that I really like. Thanks for your help. Laura (paperback_writer4)

Overall I like the program and am likely to buy it at the end of NaNoWriMo. I like the Chapters and Scenes organization and some of the card templates have interesting tips to help me refine my ideas (like the character template with Archetype, Core Needs, etc.) There are a few things I would love to see improved, though, in a future version. The Outline section is completely foreign to me. I was expecting to have a full page where I could jot down ideas and expand them similar to using an index function in Word, maybe even have the ability to grab a section and move it from the outline area. The tabbed section under the main writing area to create the outline and story cards drives me nuts - I feel like I lose a lot of 'real estate' that way. The Storyboard area doesn't flow well for me, either. I can't easily distinguish between the types of cards because it's just a bit of text coloration to distinguish them. They're very blocky with little "white space" between them so the area quickly becomes too visually cluttered for me to use. I've seen similar software that makes the storyboard look literally like index cards on a board, some even have moveable cards which then moves the sections around that the cards represent, and that would be a great addition to the software. Don't get me wrong - this is a nice piece of software and especially with the NaNoWriMo discount it's a great value - but right now it's merely quite good instead of nearly perfect. :)

I read the suggestions about turning off the smartquotes, above on this page, and I turned them off and hit apply. As per your suggestion, I did a find and replace all to replace the previous smart quotes, but it didn't change any of them. Do I have to select all text first?

Yes, I just bought writeway the other day after trying it out. After using it the nanowrimo deal was too good to pass up. I'm not using it for my nano novel right now. I'm using to orangize an already written novel. I really like how it organizes chapters and characters. I also like the templates for the characters, it offers new insights and different ways of looking at the people I've created.

Oh! I actually just ran into a problem. I bought it and opened it and I'm still getting the "buy now" box. When I click register and register the information it says that information has already been registered. How do I get rid of the box asking me to buy since I've already bought it?

Thanks for getting back to me on Twitter! Hope you guys can get a forum set aside for you next year! Now for my question... (and forgive me if this has already been answered. There are so many posts here!) Is there a way to organize the characters? So far, I only see how you can change the order that they are in, but I'm wondering, can you separate groups of characters... such as a family... ? If not, is there a chance that will be added later? Or is that in the professional version? Also, I'm still using the demo. I want to buy the full version (such a great deal!) but if I do that now, in the middle of my story, will I lose any info? Or will it just automatically be able to open my book with no problems? I'm assuming it will be fine, but I wanted to ask if there's anything special I need to do so I don't lose any info. Ok, so I bought the professional edition (thank you for the discount!) And I've registered it, putting in the number that I received via email. But, how do I add more Acts? On your site, it says that the professional edition allows for up to 9 Acts, but I can't seem to add any. Please help.

Hello! I LOVE LOVE LOVE This program! I had a few issues at the beginning, but WOW! I am a novice with this writing a novel thing, but I never dreamed it could be this easy to organize something like a novel. I have only begun to scratch the surface of all that it can do. I would love to learn more about how the notecards work, as I don't use them now. It seems like they could be a very useful tool. And the character tabs are great. Hi, I'm using the WriteWay program and am really enjoying it. I think I've mastered adding the chapters and scenes. I am concerned about the word count. It seems that there's a big difference between WriteWay's word count and Word's word count. I've read through about the smart quotes and am not sure exactly what they are or if I should turn them off. I'm only asking because according to WriteWay, I'm up to 19,000+ (yea!), but according to Word, I'm still in the 18,000+ counts. (According to today's counts there was a 600+ difference :( ). I've run my writing through the validator on NaNo's website, and it seems that the Word count is closer to NaNo. So I'm not sure how much I've actually written. Any ideas for correcting the word count? thank you! Laura

Downloaded WriteWay this morning, loved the look of it! Started building my character profiles within, saved one, no problems. I then went on to attempt to make additional character profiles, wrote all the information in, clicked on another tab, and when I clicked back all the character information was gone! D: I thought maybe there was a problem with the autosave feature between selecting tabs, so I re-typed it all again and manually saved. I then lost it all over again, despite having manually saved it. Very frustrated and upset, as you can imagine. Can you please tell me a way to fix this?

I have heard that some publishers require all italics to appear as underlined in a manuscript. Is there a way to make writeway change all italics to underlines only in the manuscript without reformatting manually? Thanks!

I seem to be having some issues with the Word Count Tracking Chart. I have the NaNo promo-demo installed on my desktop, and the standard demo on my laptop, and I'm finding that the Tracking Chart isn't always assigning word counts to the correct date, despite multiple saves, or that the word count totals switch from session to session. I suspected that it must've been due to the fact that I was leaving a session open in the afternoon before going to work, and then coming back and continuing to write after midnight in the same session... but now I'm just confused. Case in point: On Saturday, I wrote approximately 800 words. However, Saturday the 19th shows a 0 word count. Those 800 words I wrote were carried over to Sunday's total, which then carried over (on my desktop) to Monday's total. So this morning, my Monday total was not reflecting the actual words written - it was showing the total for Saturday/Sunday/Monday. However, when I took that same document to my laptop this morning to continue working, my Saturday still showed a 0 word count, but my Sunday now shows the combination of Saturday/Sunday word count, as well as a good chunk of "Monday" writing that occurred between midnight and 1AM, and Monday is showing only what happened when I woke up and started writing again at 7:30. It's not a huge deal to me, and certainly isn't a dealbreaker - it's just not a particularly good overview of what my writing pace has actually been (Sunday was not THAT productive! :) ). Thought I'd give a heads up in case it's a bug.

It's almost time for word count validation, and I plan on wining despite my obvious word debt that I've accumulated (I was a come from behind victory last year too)2010. I have many individual chapters written, and I'm appreciating the ability to move them around in writeway, but I was wondering if there was a way to view them all together and high light the entire document at once so I can paste it all into the word count validator. It would save me a lot of time as opposed to having to copy and paste each separate chapter into the validator and make an error in my word count much less likely. (Double posting a chapter might help my word count but it would also set the guilt monkeys on my trail) So far I've been able to view the whole book in preview form but I can't seem to highlight anything from there. And thanks again for the free trial.

I just wanted to thank you and the folks at Writeway. I've had this program for some time, but never really got into using it until joining NaNo this month. It's a fantastic program, and I've been having a great deal of fun with it. Thank you for all the help you've given everyone here, and I'm seriously looking forward to the 2.0 upgrade coming this spring. :)

Hi Patricia, I browsed a few pages and did not see my particular question, so I will ask it and apologies if it has already been answered and I just missed it. I am very interested in the software, I viewed a few of the tutorials, and want to download and try it out. But my question is this, how easy is it to back up my book? Normally I don't bother with flash drives or anything like that, I just save a copy of the book and email it to myself and then save it on the email server. It's never failed me before lol. How difficult would it be to do that with this program? Would I have to export the file to word and save it manually every time I wanted to backup this way? Is there an easier way to do it? Thanks! Just an update on this one, I finally got time to download the demo, I have looked at it for 5 minutes and I am completely in love with it! I love that I took one whole rough draft that was in a single file and it formatted it for me into the chapters and scenes. Love it!! I am definitely keeping this for sure.

I've been trying out WriteWay for awhile now and have a few questions. One is about the spell checker and the font. I've tried Ariel, Courier and Times Roman. The font isn't perfect, but it's readable. Trouble is that the letters are often unevenly spaced, so much so that the spell checker jumps on all these 'correctly' spelled words just because the letters squish together or appear too far apart. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Patricia, I ran into a couple of problems (both in the word count report). I emailed support Monday afternoon and included a screen shot so they could see what I'm talking about with regards to one of those problems, but I haven't heard a peep back. I haven't submitted the second problem/question yet. Do you know if there's some sort of hold-up at Support? Even if they're "working on it" (which I'm sure may be the case since I doubt I've found a problem they've never heard about before), it would be nice to get an email back saying so. I've been watching my spam catcher, just in case, but nada. Dawn

After watching the demo, I was excited to try the software with every intent of buying it November. But, then the dialog box popped up and wanted an admin user name and password and I don't have that set up on this computer. Soooo, I am at a loss as what to do. This is my own personal laptop and I have never set it up to have an administrator or password for such. Would love to try this software, so if anyone knows how I can get past that, I'd appreciate any feedback.

I love this software! I use Write Way Pro and it definitely was a factor in my NaNoWriMo win! I have already started two more books using this software. Once the user explores some of the functions it makes writing so much easier. I was lucky and did not suffer writer's block this year and I think that was partly due to the excellent tools Write Way utilizes. I know I have much more to learn about the great features it offers and hope to have it somewhat mastered by next November. Having my characters pop up next to my current work was so useful. Who wants to write about soulfull brown eyes when chapter one clearly states they were blue, or how he hates the color red and then one decorates his den in red, oops! I also kept referring to a character as Anna when I had named her Alma. The prompts used to flesh out the character make scenes involving them go much smoother. I have tried two other programs and decided this one was defiantly for me. I encourage everyone to try the demo at least!

Hi, DasherH. I'm not sure what you mean. You can download WriteWay from another browser other than IE. Google Chrome works. Once you download WriteWay, you do not need the Internet to use it. Hi Patricia, In the research tab, one option is "browse". It currently uses IE as its browsing engine; it picks up all its settings from there. I have issues with IE, so I was wondering if there's a way to use a different browser, such as Chrome, to "browse" from within the research tab. Thanks for checking! Robyn

I do most of my writing on my laptop but sometimes use my PC. I'm guessing that I would have to decide on one or the other and download the program to that computer. Is there any way to use both, or would you have to buy it twice? Hmm, I guess that still wouldn't work because they wouldn't sinc. Last year I used yWriter and had to use dropbox or thumb drive to move back and forth. Is that the best option? Also, I saw one program that was online, but I don't know the pros and cons of using an online program. Anyway, this sounds really good from what I've been reading here, and I'll add my appreciation for the generous offer. :)

Hi, Mistwalker. I use Dropbox.com to sync the four computers I write on (you can use up to 4 computers for your personal use per your licensing agreement with WriteWay). I use the Copy WriteWay Files to Back Up function and the Restore WriteWay Files to Backup function beneath file to keep them in sync. But you must remember when starting to write, use Restore and when ending Copy to so that you always have your most recent file on Dropbox. Or you can use a Jump Drive to transfer files as well. Follow the below instructions: •To keep multiple computers in sync you can use WriteWay's Copy and Restore features as follows: On computer "A": 1. Insert flashdrive 2. Select "Copy WriteWay files to Backup" from File menu 3. Set the "To Path" to your flashdrive (drive D:, E:, etc) by clicking the work "Browse..." 4: Set the "Copy" options by clicking checkboxes, we recommend backing up all subdirectories 5. Click "Copy Files" button On computer "B": 1. Insert flashdrive form computer "A" 2. Select "Restore WriteWay files from Backup" from File menu 3. Hi, Brenda, Is it possible that you hit the 'x' instead of close? That would have canceled the save. Keep in mind when closing to hit the door that says close. Hi, Delen. You need to go to Properties > Book Settings tab and use the up and down arrow to change how many Acts you want in the Book. The default is 3. If you change that number to 5, then 5 Acts will appear on the Outline after you hit Apply. Let me know if you have any more questions. No problem, Brenda...ask as many questions as you have. I don't mind. To import a cover art, first create your cover art page in the front mater. Then you copy (crtl + c) the image you want, and then paste (ctrl + v) the image onto the Cover Art page you created.You can also use right-click Copy and right-click Paste. I hope this helps. I love how EASY it is. It is extremely intuitive... the only thing causing me pause in purchase is that right now I'm on a PC...and I'm seriously thinking about getting a MacBook within the next six months or so. Is this going to be available for Mac? Yeah I know... we get something great for the Windows peeps...and I'm waffling over whether I'm a windows girl or a Mac Attacker.

I checked with the software designer. That bold issue was put into the design be3cause the templates are automatically bolded. So this is not a bug or flaw, it was designed that way. However, if you highlight the text you want to bold, you can force a bold. Hightlight the text, then use the bold button or the ctrl + B and your text will go bold. I hope this helps! Hi, Misslamarie2010, WriteWay was written as in XO. That means there are a few security issues at times with Windows 7 and Vista. Rty this and let me know if it doesn't work: Setting Windows Vista or 7 Compatibility mode for WriteWay: ---------------------------------------------------------- WriteWay was developed before Windows Vista or 7 and Windows needs to be reassured that it is ok to run a Win XP program. To set compatibility properties do the following: 1. Logon to your computer with administrator rights 2. Use Windows Explorer to locate file WriteWay.exe (default directory is C:\Program Files\WriteWay) 3. 'Right' click on the WriteWay.exe file 4. Select Properties from the popup menu 5. Click on the Compatibility tab 6. Check the checkbox next to "Run in compatibility mode for:" 7. Select XP SP 2 from the dropdown 8. Check the checkbox next to "Run this program as an administrator" 9. Click "Apply" 10. Hi, MyDinoRawrs! If you have a scene or book you want to import, first save it in RTF. Then use the Import tools. I would suggest reading the Help section regarding Importing first to help you through the process. It does explain it step by step. If you are looking to export to Word for your word count, go to Preview, then Export. Make sure you click on Book firat if you are wanting to export the entire book, or Scene/Chapter/Act if you are wanting to do a section. You can then export into .doc and .docx. A warning--our word cound numbers are higher than Word. Word counts words with a dash, emdash, or elipsis as 1 word and we count them as 2. Exampe: Ride-the-wind would be one word in Word. WriteWay counts it as 3. Does that make sense? If you have more questions--just ask. Thank you very much for the help! I know, I'm kind of bad when it comes to reading the help (although I did try! I just wasn't sure if that was it or not). I'm make sure to be more thorough before I ask a question. Thanks for the warning! Word is always off from the official validator anyways, so I'm not terribly concerned. It just gives me an incentive to work for a higher word count so I won't be in the danger zone of disappointment when I think I reach 50,000 and it's actually 49,978. Thank you again!

Hi, Joe. 2.0 is a bit of a ways off yet. We are looking at next spring and trying hard to get it ready as soon as possible. As for upgrades, WriteWay has not charged an update/upgrade fee since they started in 2003. All updates have always been free to current owners. And updates will continue to be so. However--and upgrade to 2.0 will cost. We will offer it at a much cheaper price to current owners than new buyers. Or current owners can continue using this version of WriteWay for which we will continue to run support and update fixes if need be. The compatibility option doesn't fit since I'm running in Windows XP (archaic, I know haha) however I decided to search for Writeway.wwm since you said it occurs when the software can't find this file. I found 4 of it (two in backups and two in books) and was wondering if this is perhaps the wrong place for them?

Do an unistall. Then try finding and deleting any WriteWay.wwm files you find left after the uninstall. Hi, Andanzas, When you open WriteWay and you see your composition window, use the the arrows to downsize (slide the right toolbar to the left) to fit the composition on half the screen. Then open the research folders window and slide the left side of the widow to the right. You can then view both windows at the same time. If you have a smaller screen, you can click on 'Full Screen' to hide the Outline from view if you choose. Then you would have just your composition and your research folders viewable. If you are the main user of your laptop and have access to all of the programs, you are already the admin of the laptop. The admin user name on your comp and your password is what name and password you use to log on. If that is not set up, go into control panel, users, create a user acct and password, then set that as the admin. Usually your comp does that automatically, so check your settings info. hope that helps

Thank you, Designated Cat Pillow. Yes, MuffinPuffin, make sure you are highlighted on Chapter when you hit + Chapter. This will add it beneath. If you want to drag and drop, make sure you are highlighted on the chapter or scene you want to drag before trying to drag and then drop it. If the stack of pages is white when you drag, that means you can drop it. If it is red with an x, you cannot drop the chapter where you are trying to drag. But the key is to first hightlight the chapter ou are wanting to drag. If you have more questions, please ask. Have a great day. Hi, paperback_writer4. When you go to Preview, before Exporting, click on the word Book at the top of the Outline. That will highlight the entire book instead of just a scene or chapter. This just got more interesting. I rebooted and the tracker has lost my daily activity entirely. It's still reporting my overall Word Count, but it does not report anything written for yesterday or today.... Thanks for any advice you can give :)

But if you changed things within the Word Count Tracker, you could have lost what was there as of earlier. If you want--send us a screen shot to support@writewaypro.com so we can figure out what happened. But as for daily word count--as per my reply on page 5, make sure you shut WriteWay down when you are finished for the day. That will end your 'day' and WriteWay will track the words. When you reopen WriteWay--the next day--it will start as a new day. Hmm, well I still seem to be having problems with the quotation marks counting towards my wordcount, even with Smart Quotes turned off. I went through and replaced all of them, but it didn't change my wordcount at all. Plus, on a scene I am currently writing right now, it still counts the first quotation mark as a single word. I'm not quite sure what I am doing wrong, or if it is even possible to stop it from count them as words =P

I am not sure why this is happening, lunaserah. I don't use NaNo Validator to count words, but I have checked our word counts with Word. It never counts the quotations.Word counts words like 'fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants' as one word, where we count them as 7 words. Words seperated by elipsis and emdashes, Word will also count as one word where WriteWay will count them as 2. However--I have no idea why quotations would be counted as words in NaNo Validator. Is anyone esle having this issue here? Please speak up so we can look further into this and what may be going on. I will check with tech support but I'm not sure we will have an answer for this one. According to Word, our count is pretty accurate, other than their differences to count those words as one where we will count each seperate word. However--if you made changes in the composition, switched a few words but it didn't affect word count, hit Save, it's possible to get a 0 count. Why it doubles up on that same day, I'm not sure. Hello Patricia Rasey! Thank you for all of your help. You are incredibly sweet! I did a couple of tests last night, to see just exactly where the discrepancy was happening and I think I have figured out where the extra words are coming from, I think =P (This is all with Smart Quotes off) If I type in "Hello." (with the period inside of the quotations), Writeway counts this as two words, but if I type it as "Hello". (with the period outside of the quotations), it is only counted as one. So, I'm thinking that maybe the period inside the dialogue is what is throwing off the word counter? Maybe it is thinking that it is the start of a new sentence. In which case, no idea if that is even possible to fix =P Just thought I'd share the testing I did. I personally can't write dialogue the second way, it'd be too weird xD, so I'll just have to deal with the bit of difference between the two word counters. I've been enjoying using WriteWay far too much to give up on it now! xD

Hi, DennyK. You cannot import the file into WriteWay unless you can first save it as RTF. You can only import RTF files into WriteWay. There are so many formatting issues that don't match up and going from one program to another, it's hard to import with out pulling in some of the 'hidden' formatting. So if there is a way to export as RTF, then you can import the file. Or if you can import to Word (.doc or .docx) then save as RTF, you can then import it into WriteWay. Hi, DennyK. I would do a new book and a new import. This time when you go to import, on the pop-up screen, first make sure you click the correct option (radio button) for Chapter or CHAPTER, and below that where it says Scan for Scene separators using the following: (in the default box is ###). You need to put here what you used in your manuscript to separate your scenes such as ### or ***, or whatever you used. If you only have a blank line as a scene separator--I would go to the RTF file and put something as a separator such as ### so WriteWay can find the separations and place them in individual scenes. Now, click Build. WriteWay will begin asking you is this is a Chapter for each occurrence of the word. It does this to differentiate between a chapter beginning or just the use of the word within your chapter. Make sure at every chapter beginning when asked--you click Yes. This will split your chapters and scenes for you. Once you see the completes outline of the left of the Pop-up, click Apply and it will place it in the New Book for you. Then just delete the ole book where everything is under one chapter. To create new chapters, make sure you are highlighted on Act for a first Chapter, or the chapter above for a second Chapter and so on before clicking + Chapter button. The same with Scenes. You new to be highlighted on the Chapter or a Scene to add a new one. To drag and drop, you must be highlighted on the Chapter/Scene you want to move (viewable in the composition area), then drag the chapter to where you want to drop it. If you get a White Stack of pages--you can drop the chapter/scene there. A Red Stack of papers with an x indicates it cannot be dropped where you are trying to drop it. Let me know if this doesn't make sense. yes, I cannot view anything under the preview tab. I might try adding the printer at my library to ease it, but it would be easier if I could just get through it. In the mean time at least I can type my novel. It might even help me get my word count since I frequently stop to check how much I've typed.

Hi Sara, I don't mean to butt in here but I believe I saw where you could, with your boss' permission, install the program on up to 4 computers. Then you could sync your book (data) on a flash drive and transport it that way. I hope that's correct and I hope that helps. Good luck!

Try doing the compatibility below: Setting Windows Vista or 7 Compatibility mode for WriteWay: ---------------------------------------------------------- WriteWay was developed before Windows Vista or 7 and Windows needs to be reassured that it is ok to run a Win XP program. To set compatibility properties do the following: 1. Logon to your computer with administrator rights 2. Use Windows Explorer to locate file WriteWay.exe (default directory is C:\Program Files\WriteWay) 3. 'Right' click on the WriteWay.exe file 4. Select Properties from the popup menu 5. Click on the Compatibility tab 6. Check the checkbox next to "Run in compatibility mode for:" 7. Select XP SP 2 from the dropdown 8. Check the checkbox next to "Run this program as an administrator" 9. Click "Apply" 10. Click "OK" to close all open windows Let me know if that doesn't work. And yes, you can import your work into WriteWay. Make sure it is first saved in RTF and follow the instructions on the pop-up screen. Hi, Oddyssey, A .wwa file is the auto-save file of your book in case WriteWay or your computer shuts down without hitting the Save button first. The files you want to save are the .wwb files. However, you can drag and drop characters on the Outline according to importance. Hi, Ruetha. We are currently working on a Mac version that we hope will also be compatible with Linux. But as for now, no--it's a Windows based product. As for speaking software, it is not designed to work with, nor have we tested it, but we have had a few customers try it and tell us they got it to work with minor issues. I would try the Demo first. You can uninstall WriteWay, be sure to click the "Yes to All" button when asked to remove shared system files. You will not lose your work in WriteWay. Hi, Labyrinthian, The current version WriteWay is a Windows XP program and depending on where a user installs WriteWay on Windows Vista or 7, the Windows User Account Control features can indiscriminately interfere with running WriteWay. So we recommend that users install and use WriteWay for now as an administrator. We are currently in process of re-rewriting WriteWay to remove this issue and hope to have it available next spring. Maybe then you can take another look at it. Hi, Paperback_writer4, I did some investigating myself and found out that Word counts words separated by ellipsis and emdash one word as well as words separated by hyphens. So where as twenty-two would be 1 word in Word, it would be two in WriteWay. Same as he knew...his time had come. knew...his would be 1 word in Word and two in WriteWay. We recently discovered an issue with punctuation and quotation marks, from another NaNo user, which we are correcting now and will be putting a fix up for soon. Hi, Flute71, No--you shouldn't have to select all text first. It's not the smart quotes causing the issue with word counts. It has to do with punctuation. But if you were wanting to change those and you followed the instructions above, it should have worked. The trick is making sure you have the smart quote pasted in Find and the the regular quote in the Replace With. Give it a try again, and if it doesn't work, let me know. Hi, Oddyssey, For now, there is no way to organize your characters into folders or such, but you can change their order by clicking on the profile you want to move first, then dragging it on the Outline to where you want its new position and drop it. We are looking into adding folder options for characters in Version 2.0 out next year. If you purchase WriteWay, we will send you a new license code. Go to File > Register WriteWay and it will unlock the version you purchase. No need to download WriteWay again. It's the same software you are currently working on. You will just 'register' it. Hi Oddyssey :) I think I can help you with that. I've been playing around with the program a bit... To add Acts: Click on Book up on the main toolbar (next to File). Click on Book Properties, which is the last entry on the drop down menu. The Book Properties screen will open. 1/3 of the way down the screen is the option that lets you choose how many Acts you want to add to your novel. Change to the desired number, hit apply, and they'll appear immediately. They'll also disappear immediately if you lower the number and hit apply. Happy Writing!!

Hi, Soverywrite. First click on the character you are wanting to drag so that you see it on the right side of the screen. Then click it to drag and you should get a white stack of papers. That means you can drop it where you are trying to drag it. If you get the red stack with an x, then you cannot drop the character where you are trying to drag it. But the key is to first click the character so it is viewable before trying to drag it. Let me know if that's still not working for you. Hi Patricia. I click the Characters button on the toolbar. The character profiles window open. I click on a character, and their profile appears. I then click on the character's name, selecting it, to drag it to the outline, but I still get a stack of red papers with an X on them, and the character does not drop into the outline. After I select a character, the red papers with the X appear as soon as my cursor moves off the character profile window. I'm selecting a character before trying to drag them to the outline.

Hi, Soverywriter, I just tried it on mine. Opened Character Profiles, click on bottom character to they are viewable on the right. The minute I left click on the name, I get the red stack of papers, but when I drag upwards, it changes to the white stack and allows me to drop the character higher on the Outline. Tried it with a character higher on the Outline and dragged them down. again, when I left go of the left click--it dropped my character into the new position. I am not sure why yours isn't doing that. Have you tried to drag upwards/downwards with the mouse to see if the stack of papers changes to white? Let me know. I recognize the problem I was having. I was trying to drag and drop the characters into the book outline. I can move characters around within the character window, but I thought the outline I could drop the characters into meant dropping a character somewhere onto the book outline. Hi, paperback_writer4. First--backup your work. We always tell you that to be on the safe side. But with that said, I have uninstalled and reinstalled WriteWay a LOT because I test the program and have never lost my work. Nor have we ever had anyone email us that they have lost their work due to an uninstall. So, uninstall from the computer using WriteWay uninstall (be sure to click the "Yes to All" button when asked to remove shared system files). Do not unregister. Then go to the website http://www.writewaypro.com/download.php and download the demo. It should recognize your registration. When you click Open to open your book, if it isn't in the list, use the Browse button and look in WriteWay > Files > Books. Let me know if you have any problems. Hi, honey&themoon, The Save toolbar button does not save Character Profiles. The Close button on the Character Profile pop-up screen saves the newly added Profile. Are you hitting this or using the 'x' to close the Character Profile box? I just tried adding several Characters to my Profile and hit Close and every time the character saved. My newly added Character also saved when I used the 'x' to close. It also saved if I hit Save on the toolbar for the book and did not close Character Profiles after adding a character, then closed the book and it saved. So I am not sure why it is not saving for you. What does the Version say on the About WriteWay screen under the Help menu? Please include the date following, such as v1.9.2(11/11/2011). Also--what exact steps are you taking so we know how to duplicate the process you are doing. Thank you for trying WriteWay. Hi, davidwb, Unfortunately no. You would have to manually change the underlines to italics in your book. However, if you have all underlines and want to turn them to italics, you could Preview, click Composition, click Publish-Ready and then select Options. Select the radio button that says Convert Underlines to Italics, then export your ms. But not the other way around. Sorry, but we will add that to our wish list for version 2.0. Hi, CarlieD, WriteWay must be shut down for the day to count that day's word count. WriteWay does not decide for an author when their day should end as some writers may write well after midnight and want it still within that day's count. So when you are done for the day, shut down WriteWay and then reopen it the next day and that should fixe the word count issue for each day. I hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions. Hi, ddnj2393, No, there is no way to view the book as a whole for copy and pasting into the word count validator. But you could export (which only exports a copy of the book) into Word from the Preview screen. From that exported copy, you could then copy and paste the entire book into the validator. Hi, Stefani, We have Copy WriteWay Files to Backup function as well as a Restore WriteWay files from Backup. You could set your 'Brwose' line to wherever on your computer you wish to save your files and when you are finished writing, remember to Copy WriteWay Files to Backup function and it would copy all your files to your backup position. Then from there, you could email yourself the files. Does that help? Let me know if you have more questions. Hi, bevellen, I notice on a few fonts that the spacing can be not perfect as you are saying, but I've nevere had an issue with the spell check catching them as mispelled words or that the letters appear that off. Can you do me a favor and send me a screen shot of the 'bad' font, as well as one of the spell check when it catches one of these poorly formatted words so I can get a better view of what's going on for you? Hello Patricia, Thanks for your prompt reply. Do you have a suggestion about the font that works the best in WriteWay (without the squished or over large spacing issues for example)? I will try to get the screen shot you requested in the next day or so but my list of things to do is growing as we are currently getting ready to leave home for six weeks. I could not find the spell check sample I wanted to show you in my look through a moment ago. I do remember that it was a word with an r - in Ariel font I think - which somehow was mistaken for a n. Right now the spell checker is stopping at every other apostrophe in my manuscript (can't, didn't etc.) since my editing and addition words are coming in with curly apostrophe's and the original manuscript I imported into WriteWay has straight ones. I'm sure I messed with the default and that is my mistake but I'm afraid I've grown weary of taking so much time in the HELP menu when I need to be taking that time with my manuscript so I haven't gone back in to fix the apostrophe issue. (also I can't get the spell check to keep going through the manuscript -it will only check one chapter at a time) I do like the WriteWay program for some things. It's great to have my chapters organized and my word count at hand, but I'm less than happy with things like the feeble selection in the thesaurus and the spell checker - so many words, ones like mischeivous for instance, come up as 'no suggestion', and I have yet to learn how use FIND correctly. (I have to keep retyping in the word if I alter anything on the page and want the finding search to continue) Sorry if I sound frustrated. Can't teach an old dog new tricks and all. Maybe your program is too young a 'trick' for this 'old dog' to learn. Bev

Hi, Bev. The apostrophe problem is a problem with the spell check as well as only being able to spell check one scene at a time. These and the Thesaurus are all being changed in the version we are now working on. These are not something we can change in the current version of WriteWay. But rest assured they will all be fixed and much better in version 2.0. We do not have a release date for that yet, but we do hope to get it out late spring or early summer. We can't make any promises as building software takes time and we are doing a complete rewrite. As for the find and replace, you have to first highlight the word you are looking to replace. If you are looking to find a word, you just type the word in, click either current scene, chapter, act or entire book. Then click composition or NoteCards and click the Find button. I use Courier New to type in myself. I don't see any messed up instances of font. But then, I have always typed in that font as it is easer for me to read on screen. Soon we should have a WriteWay that should fix all those instances you refer to and include more new features.
