Editing and proofreading company <a href="http://www.scribendi.com/nanowrimo" rel="nofollow">Scribendi</a> is one of our great corporate sponsors, and they'll be offering a free webinar for NaNoWriMo participants called "How To Write a Novel" this Saturday, October 22! It will run from 11:00 AM - 11:40 AM EDT.

Here's an overview from the folks at Scribendi:

In this webinar, the first of a two-part series, Bryan, Scribendi.com's Senior Editor and a published writer, discusses how to write a novel. In this 20 minute presentation, which will be followed by a question and answer period, Bryan delves into setting, character, conflict, and structure. He also introduces some of the important elements of a novel, such as theme, tone, and dialogue. Finally, he points out the importance of genre, audience, and literary conventions.

Whether you're a new or experienced writer, you won't want to miss this webinar on how to write a novel. And be sure to catch the sequel, entitled: "How to Edit a Novel."

Space is limited. Reserve your Webinar seat now at: <a href="https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/968082830" rel="nofollow">https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/968082830</a>.

Hey Everyone!

We will be recording the webinar and putting it up on our site, or on YouTube, early next week. I'll put the link to the recorded webinar in this thread so you can easily find it.

Damon, that's what you get when the Marketing Coordinator (me!) creates the event, rather than one of our editors—a 12 hour webinar! My mistake; the webinar is from 11:00AM-11:40AM. I hope you'll be tuning in.

Characters can sometimes go against what you have planned for them (or at least you blame the characters). When should you reel in your characters or should you allow your storyline to get completely diverted in case it becomes better?

Hope that made sense.

I'd also like to pass on my thanks too. After what was said, I think I do need to rein my characters slightly. I have also started putting specific plans for inside chapters, specifically what the MC will be feeling at the start, middle and the end. That was a serious help although I think I would say my concept came before my characters as they were created to facilitate the story.

Also thank you for spending so long with us, much longer than planned. Looking forward to the editting webinar as that one will be completely new on the fiction side to me.

Re: Scribendi's free novel-writing webinar on October 22!

Writing 50,000 words in one month can seem daunting. Here are some tips to help you get through the month successfully. http://www.scribendi.com/advice/preparing_for_nanowrimo.en.html

Scribendi.com’s Guide to National Novel Writing Month

A few easy steps to help prepare you for National Novel Writing Month

There will be no excuses, and no retreat. You will use the weekend before National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) to stock up on coffee, hoard any leftover Halloween candy, and purchase a bottle of celebratory champagne to open on the first of December. We want you to succeed in your goal of writing a novel in one month, and we have a few suggestions to help you do so.

Do the math and plan
Even though novel writing isn’t rocket science, there is a bit of math involved in National Novel Writing Month. You have to write 50,000 words in 30 days, so simply divide 50,000 by 30. The result is 1666.6666666, which is your daily target word count. To be safe, round it up to 1,700 words, just in case you have an off day. How you accomplish this is up to you. If writing 1,700 words in one sitting seems daunting, try writing 850 in the morning and 850 in the evening. This may help keep you excited and thinking about writing throughout the day.

Know the core of your story
A good exercise is to try reducing your story to a few sentences. If you can reduce it to two or three sentences, then you probably have a strong enough narrative to begin writing. If you can’t, simplify your story. Don’t worry about all the rich, interesting material you think you’re leaving out. Once you start writing your novel in a month, it will take on a life of its own. Another good technique is outlining. A story outline provides the significant plot points of a novel—a road map, if you will. This will help keep you focused on your narrative.

Keep an open mind
We know it’s difficult, but try to come to this process with an open mind and follow some of our tips on writing a book. Don’t worry about quality. Just write. Remember Tolkien. When writing The Fellowship of the Ring, he was troubled by the continued appearance of a character named Strider. Tolkien tried to write around him, cut him out, and rename him, but Strider wouldn’t have any of it. This character wanted to be written. Tolkien finally gave in and decided to see where the story would go with this character. Little did he know that he was creating Aragorn, soon to be king of Middle Earth. The lesson here is to come to your writing with no presuppositions. You may be surprised.

Save the editing for later
Perhaps the biggest difficulty you will face throughout this process is silencing your own internal editor. As writers, we all have the innate desire to revise our work in order to ensure what we’ve written is the best it can possibly be. This is normal and good; however, at this stage in the process, it’s unhelpful and may discourage you. Leave editing for December, January, and February. Better yet, leave the editing to our manuscript editors.

Hi NaNoWriMo friends!

I’m April, an editor at Scribendi.com, and I’m getting ready to embark on this crazy journey with all of you! Can you hear my heart pounding? Trust me, it is.

Before getting started, I want to tell you a bit about me. I’ve been working at Scribendi.com as an in-house editor for over two years now, and it’s been great; I get to do what I love and work with a group of truly amazing people. How lucky am I? I love sandwiches, the word “fancy,” and trashy reality TV. I also love writing, but the truth is it scares me.

This is my third year signing up for NaNoWriMo, but this year, I really want to do more than just sign up. I want to win this year, so I thought to myself, “Self, what drives you?” And because clearly the answer is fear of public humiliation, I asked Scribendi.com to help me be publicly accountable for my progress. I’ll be posting resources as well as my thoughts and updates in this thread (and weekly on Facebook), and I’m sure you’ll find me bouncing around in the other forums as well.

I don’t know about all of you, but I can’t wait to get started tomorrow!

Re: Scribendi.com – Webinars, Writing Advice, and April's Account of Surviving NaNoWriMo

Well, it’s been just about a week. How is everyone doing? I’m not as far along as I hoped I would be at this point, but I also knew weekends were going to be a challenge to me; I’m going to do better this week! The awesome (as those of you who caught the webinar know) Bryan sent me this link for motivation and I thought I would share it with all of you: http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2011/11/five-ways-to-stay-motivated-while.html

Bryan also lent me a copy of Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, which I believe he included on his list of recommended writing books. I’ve been reading it (reading about writing counts as writing, right?) and finding it really helpful (and charming!); I especially needed to hear what she had to say about writing a bad first draft, and I have been working at turning my editor brain off while I write. In an attempt to not completely fail at this, I’ve been letting myself write rambling descriptions of anything that strikes my fancy, as well as a non sequitur or two, and have discovered a lot about my characters and my plot this way. Sure, that 500 word digression about an article my character was reading probably won’t make it into the final draft, but something I wrote in it solved a gaping plot hole I’d been struggling with for the years I have been thinking about this story. I saw some debate on the Reaching 50,000 forum about whether the purpose of NaNoWriMo is to write something good and whether this kind of writing is cheating; for me, the purpose of NaNo is to just write and if I was trying to only write something that was good, I wouldn’t be writing at all!

Finally, and maybe most important (or at least, most fun) is that Scribendi is holding contests on its Facebook page throughout NaNoWriMo. Tomorrow is the final day of the first contest—you can win a Scribendi t-shirt by posting the opening sentence of your novel on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ScribendiInc

Thanks Scribendi!

In case you are answering questions.

I wrote my novel non-linear this year, is it better to approach the novel editting from the start to finish or should the easy editting be done and leaving the difficult edits until later?
