You can't change your word count once NaNoWriMo is over :) once it hits midnight on December first wherever you are, the word counters turn off. Your fellow Wrimos are correct. Changing your word count is frozen until the Great Site Wipe and relaunch for NaNoWriMo 2012! (typically done in the first 10 days of October of the year). Until then the box and all Wrimos word count will stay what they are! Hope that helps!
