Welcome to Tech Help!

This is a forum for asking questions about how to do stuff with the site. It's also the forum for reporting bugs.

Here are currently reported issues. Please review this topic, and do not add additional reports for these issues unless new information is available. Please do not respond to this topic with new reports; it will be faster and more efficient to create a new topic, since as these things get longer, they take longer to load. :) Bug reports posted here will be deleted without notice.

Before reporting any new bugs, please give the first couple of pages of the Tech Help forum to make sure it hasn't already be reported; duplicate topics will be referred to older threads and locked.

STORE/DONATION issues: Please note that the store staff does not read tech help, nor do we have access to store data. To get any store or donation question answered, you'll need to Contact the store directly.

Technical Issues


  • Large browser font makes drop down menus hard to use or non-functional

  • YWP accounts are not linked. - YWP and the main site are not linked! Accounts must be created separately (although you can use the same username and password, they are separate accounts.) This is to provide an extra layer of security for the YWP site. You can not friend users on the YWP site and they cannot friend users on the main site. This is not a bug.

Winning Issues

  • Some users who have donated to NaNoWriMo are not being automatically redirected to the winner's page when the validator counts more than 50,000 words.

  • Some users who have Officially won are not seeing the Collect Winners Goodies link under the My NaNoWriMo menu. This is a caching issue (server) and should fix itself over time, but if it does not resolve itself by the end of the month do not worry - you will get your winner's page!

Sign Up/Sign In

  • The Auto-detect Time Zone Feature on Sign Up Page can be missing or incorrect

  • Sign Up Form “cut-off” when using larger then normal font size or zoom.

  • Brought to you by Page is including 2010 user lists.

  • Leaving off the WWW from the site URL presents a different front page, and does not respect cookie settings or permissions.



 

Profiles

  • Clicking on a username goes to Dashboard if user has not created a profile yet.

  • Years Done/Won show twice on profile (once for done, once for won)

  • Some Camp NaNoWriMo Donor Halos missing.

  • Uploading of Book Covers Is Not Yet Supported.

  • Currently, there is no way to remove Writing Buddies who no longer participate/haven't setup a profile

  • Your own Writing Buddies show on the same page as the list of people who have added you as a buddy

  • Writing Stats are not correct for some people - in some cases, they show negative amounts of words written today and their total does not match the real word count shown elsewhere on their profiles.



 

Forums/Posting

  • Selection of Flat View or Threaded View of threads is not remembered - every time you come back to the site (after closing the browser), you will be defaulted to Threaded View.

  • Watch thread is sometimes giving an error message

  • NOTE: Regional Forums are at the Bottom of the Main Forum Listing

  • Signatures are not yet implemented.

  • “New” indicator does not automatically bring you to new comments

  • Thread sorting is not yet supported

  • "New" indicator does not show for threads that are new but have no comments

  • Editing of threads and comments is not yet supported.

  • Forum customization is not yet implemented.

  • Deeply threaded replies become unreadable (Too Narrow) - Work around: Click the Title of a comment and it will re-open with that comment as the top-most section of view

  • Links do not automatically become clickable in forum posts.

  • Quote tag causes font to change on text that follows it.



 


Pictures/Avatars

  • Images must be no larger then 30kb. This is a very strict limit! Try http://www.shrinkpictures.com/create-avatar/ for a way to reduce your image size.

  • Images smaller than 100 x 100 are being blown up to fit, distorting the image. Until this is fixed, avatars must be exactly 100 x 100 to avoid distortion.


  • Cache is being employed, which means it may take some time for your new image to appear. Please allow up to 24 hours for your new avatar to show up.



 

NaNoMail

  • NaNoMail from the past year did not migrate initially, but it will be migrated.

  • Sent items cannot be deleted

  • No "replied to" indicator in the inbox.

  • Cannot delete received nanomails when using IE 7



 

Search

  • Searching with terms shorter than 3 characters may or may not return accurate results.



 

Store

  • Store Link goes to Donations page instead of Merchandise page



 

Word Count Validator:

  • Counts over 120K can’t be validated. - This is a site limitation rather then a bug. We aren’t equipped to handle larger files. Fix: You can put a file of less then 120K through the word Count Validator between November 25 - 30 to turn on winner status and then manually update your word count to correct the total.

  • Why is my word count different then the official validator? - Different counters count differently. Our word count robots are illiterate and count the spaces between words. the most common culprit is punctuation. Check your ellipses and em dashes - smart word counts may count spaces on either side of these two words, but our robots can’t read, so they count anything without a space as one word.

  • My Word Count isn’t registering on the right day! - The word count is saved at midnight. Make sure you set your time zone properly. Sorry, there is no way to go back and edit previous days totals.

  • Known Issues with Word Counts: Open Office Counts are Highly Inflated! - This has to do with a bug in the OO word count tool! remove curly quotes from your manuscript and the word count should update properly.



 

NaNo Chat:

  • NaNo Chat is no longer available through the main menu. It is not an Official chatroom run by NaNoWriMo, however you can find more details about Goodchatting IRC chat #nanowrimo at the Goodchatting Website

Technical Issues

  • About Page links are all broke except for “History”

  • Total Cumulative Word Count for 2011 is excessively high due to a bug



 

Sign Up/Sign In

  • Final Page of the Sign Up Wizard sometimes appears to assign the wrong region (Which can be changed later)

  • Fund-O-Meter Percentages are too High.

  • Dashboard Video overlaps “NaNo Near You” drop down menu

  • “Invite a Friend” references Camp NaNoWriMo

  • Sign up wizard informs you that you have opted IN to email notification and that you have opted out of it.



 

Regions

  • Users may not realize to set your home region, click the grey house next to your region listing. It will turn Blue. That is your home.

  • Selecting My NaNoWriMo | Set My Home Region results in losing all region affiliations.



 

Profiles

  • Selecting Years Done/Years Won requires you to hold down ctrl or ⌘ key while highlighting years. IT IS NOW CHECKBOXES

  • Can not remove all Years Done/Years Won

  • Years done can only have one year added or removed at a time

  • All users are donors

  • Writing buddies have not yet been implemented

  • Writing buddies from prior version of the site are being imported - it will take some time.

  • Typo on Stats tab: "Curreny Day" should be "Current Day" and Target average words should be 1667.



 

Forums/Posting

  • Regional Forums - Header blocks do not close up for normal participants.

  • Quote button does not work.

  • quote tag and img tag are not functioning properly in the forums

  • img tag is not supporting the height and width attributes.

  • Some HTML tags are formatting oddly, specifically the list tags, ol, ul and li.

  • The strike tag is not currently functioning in forums posts.

  • Threads in Regional Forums are sorting oldest to newest.

  • HTML in Forum headers is showing incorrectly.

  • RSS Feed is not working properly when attempting to connect via Google Chrome. Workaround: Use Google Reader to handle the RSS feed.

  • Thread/Forum Notifications not yet available.

  • Clicking on Comment titles in forums (regular and regional) should open them up, but instead they are generating an Access Denied error.

  • Reporting a comment for moderation also generates the Access Denied page. Please note: the moderation report IS being sent, the access denied page is coming up when the screen tries to redraw for you.

  • Including a less then sign causes all text that follows to be lost

  • All users are donors

  • Locked threads, and those that are moved from one forum to another, act as if they are “stickied”

  • Flat View not yet available in Forum threads.

  • Regional Forums: Clicking on a comment title or clicking on Parent or Context when in Flat View, results in an error page "Something went wrong..."

  • Threads edited by a moderator or admin are having their last post by and last post time changed to the time and name of the original post author.

  • Regional Forums - New post indicator is not clearing immediately after you view a thread. In some cases, it takes many hours for this indicator to go away.


Winning Issues

  • Purple "Winner" bars are not appearing in Internet Explorer, Konqueror and sometimes Chrome. Firefox and Safari appear to be rendering these properly. This does not mean you haven't won, it is simply a display bug.




 Search

  • Search is not always including results from the forums.

  • Search has stopped returning Profiles in results

  • Only 20 items of any type are being returned at one time when searching.

Hi! I think there's a glitch with the donor halo. There's one on my profile but (sad to say, being a broke and freshy graduated high school student) I haven't donated anything.
