The guy who starts off as a douchebaggy jerk. But through growing fond of, and therefore closer to the girl, he softens up and falls in love with her. Think Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. Or Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments series.
OR...
The guy who has always been kind to her. There when she needs him, would do anything for her. His affections are known from the beginning, obvious to the reader, even when not always to the girl. Think Peeta in The Hunger Games. Or Jacob from Twilight series (if he were to have won her affection).
Actually, I tend to go for tall dark, pale and brooding: Mr. Rochester, Prof Snape, that guy from The Window on Washington Square (I forgot his name) and that other guy from The Pale Lover (I forgot his name too) and best of all: Roderic Usher!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd go with number 2 the entire time. Jace was always just kind of an idiot to me. I liked Alec more. And then he had to go and go gay on me. Wow dude. That's all I can say.
A jerk that gets killed off in the end. I am rather irritated today. My answer will be different after my doctors appointment with the really hot doctor.
Honestly, if the guy's character is given depth and allowed to develop naturally, I'll fall head over heels for either type. I tend to find the arrogant guy more entertaining, but the guy who waits quietly no matter what the girl does - mm, he really steals my heart.
And since everybody's fixated on the Mr. Darcy example... I've always liked Captain Wentworth better.
Darcy. There is something that always comes off as weak from a Peeta or Jacob, and I prefer to have strong males to compliment the strong females I put in stories.
Real life: the guy that's always there for you. However in a story it's often more interesting to see a character you didn't like at first change into something unexpected and attractive.
I would have said the sweet guy hands down but damn you had to say Mr. Darcy! So my answer goes like this: I would pick the sweet guy hands down... of and only if Mr. Darcy was already taken. But only if it was Mr. Darcy, if it was Jace I would hands down choose Simon!
The dark handsome flirt that has made his intensions entirly clear. Although somtime the first Example Darcy but only if and this holds for the second as well if once he decieds he likes me he is both clear in his attentions and loyal. Ohh and did I mention I only go for gentleman in otherwards if whickham had been in love with me for years I still wouldn't like him becuase he is a bad bad boy.
Well.... for me it depends upon more than just that, but for the sake of this question, 90% of the time I will like the Jerk with a Heart of Gold more than the nice guy hero. The jerks tend to have a lot more depth in stories and I can sympathize with them a lot more than I can with the nice guy. That's why I never really liked Peeta that much.
I was never fond of Mr. Darcy, but I'd have to go with the jerk. I love Jace Wayland. :D The steadfast, sweet guys like Peeta and Jacob just annoy the crap out of me. I'm too cynical and pessimistic to like them.

I can dream, can't I?
C'mon, most romance writing with the types you mentioned is wish-fulfillment anyway. I might as well read wish-fulfillment about the type of fictional guy I like best.
I think I'm leaning towards a more diluted version of the jerk. I think I'm going to make him seem more indifferent than full on cold. I don't know. This is difficult haha
I say he shouldn't be a jerk, but not be "into her" either. Nice, but in a completely platonic way, and totally with limits on the niceness. Not afraid to tease her, does his own thing and lets her do hers sometimes, and compeltely willing to call her on her crap.
In other words, he starts out thinking of her as a friend or even a "kid sister", then grows into a deeper relationship. Maybe he's even friends with her brother or formerly dated her sister (or friend).
I think that's what I'm going with. Something like he's so wrapped up in his career/degree/Whatevs that he doesn't really take notice of her and the effect she slowly has on him until BAM he realizes he's in love.
I feel like although a lot of women prefer the second one they're more attracted to the first. Maybe you shouldn't go for polar opposites. The one interesting thing about Peeta (as I saw it) was that even though he was strong and dangerous (he did kill people in all the books, I hate that people think of him as soft) he was just more tender toward Katniss. And I found it a heck of a lot more interesting that in the third book he hated her and despite being so angry and scared of her that he attempted to kill her that he still ended up in love with her. Basically I feel like a guy can be a jerk to everyone but have a soft spot for a certain girl, y'know?
But that's not the question, so I pick the first one!
Not a lady, but I like menfolk, so I thought I'd add my two cents.
While I like dark and brooding, I think it's possible to have that without making the guy a douchebag. To me, once a douche, always a douche. So... some mix of both, I imagine? A guy that can be soft and loving, but might be a bit reluctant and conflicted with himself and how a relationship might affect his own goals.
I'm not a fan of jerks myself. That said, you have to make the nice guy interesting and flawed in some way, too--if their romance is perfect, how boring is that? As long as there's some sort of conflict, interest, and chemistry there, I'm all for the nice guys.
I find both appealing and either of them can work/not work in stories, but for me, personally, I would choose the nice guy. Jerks don't make healthy relationships and they get overused in books and films.
Oh gosh, can I choose neither? XD Peeta was ridiculously insufferable in his undying love for Katniss -- really I was like "Dude, just shut up already! She's not interested." But at the same time I can't stand jerks -- though as long as the jerk isn't also obnoxiously arrogant than I suppose I can tolerate him more -- especially if he really isn't a jerk.
I'm not a Twilight fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I didn't mind Jacob nearly as much as I minded Peeta.
Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Which guy do you find more appealing in a novel?
The guy who starts off as a douchebaggy jerk. But through growing fond of, and therefore closer to the girl, he softens up and falls in love with her. Think Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. Or Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments series.
OR...
The guy who has always been kind to her. There when she needs him, would do anything for her. His affections are known from the beginning, obvious to the reader, even when not always to the girl. Think Peeta in The Hunger Games. Or Jacob from Twilight series (if he were to have won her affection).
Thanks!
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Darcy. Oh, Darcy.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Normally I'd say the guy who was always kind to her, but than you had to go and throw Mr Darcy in there and confuse me...
...oh... no... wait... that should read like this: Brandon! oh! Col Brandon! Rickman! Alan Rickman! Snape Prof Snape!
;p
:)

I looooooves Roderic Usher! <3 <3 <3
And did I mention Severus?
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Yes, you did. :P
And yes, I tend to agree on that count. Otherwise, yes, I too would go for nice guy. (Like Remus...?)
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Oooo, Mr Rochester! <3
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
SNAPE!!! I liked Snape from the very beginning(:
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Loved Col Brandon! Perfect example of number 2
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I'd go with number 2 the entire time. Jace was always just kind of an idiot to me. I liked Alec more. And then he had to go and go gay on me. Wow dude. That's all I can say.
So yeah. The guy who's always been there for you.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Lolol, Brandon. xD
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Jace. (I loved him even as a douchebag.)
The obnoxious jerks that aren't actually obnoxious jerks always tug at the heartstrings.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
^this
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
inuyasha. he's annoying, rude, and a demon, but you gotta love him. so douchebaggy jerk.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Inuyasha..... :D
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I really wasn't sure from the descriptions, but the examples chose for me! I'd take Darcy over Peeta anyday. *dreamy*
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Douchebaggy jerk turned soft ... I fall in love with that type of character 99% of the time!

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Yes!! Love wentworth! Loving only her, even when there seemed to be no hope. *sigh*

Darcy.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
the jerk
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Definitely the second choice! I loved Peeta and Jacob, they were definitely my favorites.

The guy who has always been kind to her. I love that guy.
Not that I have anything against Mr. Darcy! :)
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I adore Mr. Darcy! But Mr. Bingley was just as wonderful! So I'm stuck lol
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I was never fond of Mr. Darcy, but I'd have to go with the jerk. I love Jace Wayland. :D The steadfast, sweet guys like Peeta and Jacob just annoy the crap out of me. I'm too cynical and pessimistic to like them.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
First one, mostly because the guy I fancy at the moment fits the first bill.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Nice guys finish last? Not in my book they don't. Second one all the way.
Jerks aren't my thing. Granted, it depends on the level of jerk, but I'm impatient. I'm not going to wait around for them to soften up on me.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I agree! But they are kinda fun to read about haha
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
At the same time, doormat-sweet guys bother me. So it evens out.
...Why wasn't there a "snarky-sweet geek boy" option!? I call discrimination against my favorite kind of guy! ;)
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
There's such a thing???!!

Haha I feel ya

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
The first one, but only because that's how all of my past relationships have been...
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
I think the second one... Some one who treats with me respect from the beginning and shows me kindness deserves me in the end... =)
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Go with the nice guy. While I love me a douchebaggy jerk, the nice guys get it right.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

Think Ron and Hermione in HP, Reeve in the Face on the Milk Carton, Brandon in the Hawk and the Jewel.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
For me, it's a tie. I can't help to love Mr. Darcy and Jace, but at the same time; Jacob is "safe" and 100% there, you know?
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Between Mr. Darcy and Colonel Brandon, I'd pick Colonel Brandon every time. So definitely the second option.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...
Darcy.
