Ladies, the guy you prefer...

Which guy do you find more appealing in a novel?

The guy who starts off as a douchebaggy jerk. But through growing fond of, and therefore closer to the girl, he softens up and falls in love with her. Think Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. Or Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments series.

OR...

The guy who has always been kind to her. There when she needs him, would do anything for her. His affections are known from the beginning, obvious to the reader, even when not always to the girl. Think Peeta in The Hunger Games. Or Jacob from Twilight series (if he were to have won her affection).

Thanks!

I was never fond of Mr. Darcy, but I'd have to go with the jerk. I love Jace Wayland. :D The steadfast, sweet guys like Peeta and Jacob just annoy the crap out of me. I'm too cynical and pessimistic to like them.

Jerks aren't my thing. Granted, it depends on the level of jerk, but I'm impatient. I'm not going to wait around for them to soften up on me.

I say he shouldn't be a jerk, but not be "into her" either. Nice, but in a completely platonic way, and totally with limits on the niceness. Not afraid to tease her, does his own thing and lets her do hers sometimes, and compeltely willing to call her on her crap.

In other words, he starts out thinking of her as a friend or even a "kid sister", then grows into a deeper relationship. Maybe he's even friends with her brother or formerly dated her sister (or friend).

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

I feel like although a lot of women prefer the second one they're more attracted to the first. Maybe you shouldn't go for polar opposites. The one interesting thing about Peeta (as I saw it) was that even though he was strong and dangerous (he did kill people in all the books, I hate that people think of him as soft) he was just more tender toward Katniss. And I found it a heck of a lot more interesting that in the third book he hated her and despite being so angry and scared of her that he attempted to kill her that he still ended up in love with her. Basically I feel like a guy can be a jerk to everyone but have a soft spot for a certain girl, y'know?

But that's not the question, so I pick the first one!

Not a lady, but I like menfolk, so I thought I'd add my two cents.

While I like dark and brooding, I think it's possible to have that without making the guy a douchebag. To me, once a douche, always a douche. So... some mix of both, I imagine? A guy that can be soft and loving, but might be a bit reluctant and conflicted with himself and how a relationship might affect his own goals.

Oh gosh, can I choose neither? XD Peeta was ridiculously insufferable in his undying love for Katniss -- really I was like "Dude, just shut up already! She's not interested." But at the same time I can't stand jerks -- though as long as the jerk isn't also obnoxiously arrogant than I suppose I can tolerate him more -- especially if he really isn't a jerk.

I'm not a Twilight fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I didn't mind Jacob nearly as much as I minded Peeta.

Urg, in a book idk. real life second, definatel, but in a novel the first one is always more fun to read. also while the second has more romance through the whole novel, the first one has much stronger flares of romance. Food for thought.

There is something about the Darcy character that really invites good storytelling. Because, when you have a jerk, or a guy that is emotionally distant, there are so many questions and places to go with that. Why is he like that? What is it about your MC that drives this guy to change? Does he really need to change?

And sometimes Darcy characters are just more fun. There is tension, you have to earn that relationship, and I don't end up walking all over the guy. Nice guys are great, but they tend to be doormats, which is irritating. Jerks are fun, and provide a challenge. And sometimes they can be absolutely hilarious in their desire to be aloof.

Gah. I really can't choose between them. I love the kind of guys who are kind to her from the start, and love her throughout, but I love those jerk types too.

All rooted from a show I saw when I was a kid, where there was a knight who was always kind to the MC and then a young king who was a jerk most of the story, and then softened up at the end.

Gah, to this day I have trouble picking who she should be with, even though it ended up being the arse-wipe king, xD

I vote for the nice guy, as long as he has some gumption. No doormats, please.

The jerk is, in my opinion, more overdone than the nice guy--but maybe I just notice jerks more because I don't actually like them. I think the jerk works best if the writer lets him redeem himself somehow. Jace Wayland & Mr. Darcy both do this well.

Please don't have the girl like a guy BECAUSE he's a jerk--especially not if there's a nice guy in the mix. I'm thinking of the Ethan Hawk character in Reality Bites--a movie from my teen days. The guy was a douche, and the girl fell for him...why? I mean, I get that he was vulnerable and artsy and smart, but he never once stopped acting like a douche.

I'm so with you on that. I think what makes romances with guys like Darcy so interesting is the fact that their affections aren't just freely and easily given, they have to be earned, like you said. The girl has to be something spectacular to have his heart, opposed to him falling for her at first sight, with no further reasoning. The process of earning that affection is what makes for a good story.

No no, I would never have the girl fall for the jerk because he's a jerk. Girls like that annoy the crap out of me. I'm thinking more along the lines of they're jerks do to the fact that they have a wall up (perhaps they once got their heart broken?) and although he has the tough exterior, you can see (as with the case of Darcy) that he really is a good guy inside. His social skills are just lacking.

I'm not fond of the way too nice guy either. Boring! I dated on of those once and broke up with him because he was just too nice. Not much help, am I? I suggest you do a combo.
Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

Going with number two as more consistently likeable. I do like the "douchebaggy guy who softens up" thing if done a certain way, but NOT if he only softens up because of pure, plain and simple love.

Because when a girl (not suffering, not experience, not regret or lessons learned) is the sole reason for the "improvement" in a guy (actually, this applies to females as well), I always find myself thinking that the change is really probably related more to hormones and the instinct to mate than it is to any real change of heart — it's just that the guy has enough of a sense of propriety or maybe of social pressure that he's not going to go all piratey and steal the girl regardless of whether she likes him or not.

However, guy type number one is somewhat more likely to inspire my obsessive admiration IF he actually seems to truly suffer and struggle and think and become wiser in the process of improving as a person.

Oh, yeah, good point. I kind of assumed that "nice guy" doesn't mean "wimp," because there are plenty of (...fictional...) nice guys who aren't pushovers and who are strong and manly and such. I don't really include wimpy nice guys in the category of real nice guys, because I tend to feel they're only nice out of wimpiness, not out of a sense of inner strength. Being REALLY nice at the same time as being functional and smart can take a lot of guts and determination and patience, so my "nice guy" is inherently not "too" nice. ;)

The guy who's always been nice is nice, but give him a few flaws at least. It's too unnatural to be that nice. What would be better is a nice guy who's always nice, but gets seriously mean when something unexpected happens. Like, he get's supremely jealous and feels like hitting her, but knowing he couldn't live with himself if he did, he tortures himself at his inability to control his jealousy...
yeah....flaws are great.... ^_^

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

The one who has always been kind! So very, very much this.

Examples: I hated the Twilight series, but Jacob was the one character I actually liked... and then the book actually broke my heart when idiot Bella turned him down. Seriously?!

I saw several other people mention Col. Brandon. Oh my gosh, yes. And, in keeping with Alan Rickman's brilliant roles, my dearly beloved Severus Snape. Seriously. Major Lily/Snape shipper, right here.

Examples of the first that just eternally tick me off? Exhibit A, Disney's The Princess and the Frog. The guy is a womanizer and a lazy bum, and over the course of one song we're supposed to believe he's completely changed? Yeah, right. That's so often how I feel about the Jerk Turns Nice To Get The Girl stories - our much-adored Mr. Darcy possibly being the primary shining exception to that rule (of course, he actually was a great guy anyway; in a big way, it turned out that he was, above all, overly cautious and definitely shy, thus coming off as a jerk). In most of these cases, it just feels to me like the girl is getting herself into what is going to become an abusive situation.

It occurs to me that I'm ranting. Sorry. I'll shut up now and let other people express their opinions now. :)

I find the first one more appealing, because it's more interesting in my opinion to have a character who's more dynamic in terms of his emotions. It also makes for some nice drama, since oftentimes there's a scene where he has to choose between the girl and his douchebaggy friends, and that's exiting. The second type of character has his place, too, but it's easy to overdo it until he just becomes really annoying.

Okay I know how to solve this . . . Colin Firth is a much better Darcy than the actors they have picked out for Jace and Peeta, I mean ANTHONY FROM SWEENEY TODD IS NOT SMEXY!

I have a weak spot for "troubled souls" as someone once told me. But I have learned over time that in real life, there is rarely (if ever) such a thing as a jerk with a heart of gold. Pretty much if they're jerks on the outside, they're jerks on the inside, too. What that recognition will mean for my fiction is still being determined.

Also, I think some of it comes down to what Frodo said about Strider...I don't remember the exact quote, but something about how an enemy would look sweeter and feel more foul. I think there is something to be said for that with men, too. Some men can put on a good show, but be manipulators and jerks. And some people don't put on a good show, but have the right stuff on the inside. So for some people it may be more about substance over form, rather than "bad boy" over "good guy." But that's different from a guy being a jerk. I think that usually just means he's a jerk.

I'm going to vote for the guy who was always nice. Mostly because that's my lot in life (the kind friend that doesn't get noticed 'til later), that's how my dad chose his girlies when he was in high school (he filled out toward the end and told the bitches that had been mean to him to get to the back of the line), and those are the guys that I tend to fall for, even if I don't pick them first (my life is a vicious irony).

Honestly, if the guy's character is given depth and allowed to develop naturally, I'll fall head over heels for either type. I tend to find the arrogant guy more entertaining, but the guy who waits quietly no matter what the girl does - mm, he really steals my heart.

And since everybody's fixated on the Mr. Darcy example... I've always liked Captain Wentworth better.

I would say the initial jerk. Or even just the man that keeps to himself and is more mysterious. When I guy is always by the girls side from start to finish I can't help but think that either
a. it's unrealistic. Relationships have problems, what makes it a good relationship isn't the lack of tension but the ability to overcome it.
or
b. that the male character doesn't have a spine and hides behind his 'woman' and is nothing more than a worry wart, yes man.
On the other hand I don't like the male character who is a jerk AND a womanizer.

Dude...You can't pick between Peeta and Jace, you canNOT EVER choose anyone over Mr. Darcy. EVER. And Jacob has a motorcycle, great hair, and abig heart. How do you top that?!

Now, if they're both in the same story, obviously, the nice guy, cause when the chick breaks the good guys heart she just comes off like a heartless creep (Sometimes I hated Katniss. And I always hated Bella, but at least Katniss had, like, her life constantly in danger and an excuse not to notice boys drooling over her).

Then again, when both kinds of guys are in a novel, the nice guy tends to come off wimpy and kind of annoying (Simon seemed that way sometimes).

In real life, the good guy. In books, I liked the "bad" guys you said, but the thing is, you could always tell those two were okay people. I mean, if you're talking Draco Malfoy and such, it's like hecks no. Grab yourself a Peeta and get the heck out of dodge. But when Jace is being funny and charming and stuff, you can tell they should be together.
Now, if you make a guy reeeally evil, but they fall in love, and he makes an actual DRAMATIC change to become good, that's good readin right there.

In this entire comment, i don't think I made a decision at all. =)

I like both depending on the book. I guess I probably tend to go for the first one. If you know Vampire Diaries, I like Damon far more than Stefan. I'm a sucker so the somewhat bad boys (in literature!). They're just more interesting. This is why characters like Dr. House are so popular.

Combination! I like the guy who's like Peeta but acts like Mr. Darcy, perhaps because he has some ideas about what makes a man 'manly' and acting like he cares about people isn't one of them. So rather then softening up and falling for her, he grows to trust her enough that he starts to reveal his true self to her (whether by accident or intentionally).

If I had to choose one of the two I would say Darcy, though, because I tend to act like that as well - if I like someone I'll be a jerk to them because I'm awkward enough that I don't know what else to do, so them sparring back is best.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

I'd go for a guy who loves the girl but is more subtle about it, less needy but still with genuine feelings. The perfect example would be Marcus from Babylon 5. *sigh, Marcus*. He's charming, socially adept, patient and easy going. He didn't stalk Susan like a hunter after a trophy, rather their feelings developed for each other over the course of the series. What can I say, I like a romance of equals.

I'm not found of guys who starts off treating their love interests like crap. But I don't know, part of Darcy's charm was that the MC didn't like him at first either. He falls for her before she got over her dislike for him, then he had to set about wooing the lovely lady in a sort of inept way, while society and rumors got in the way of her own eventually acceptance of him. I think girls like a guy who is persistant, and bonus if the guy doesn't instantly fall for her the first time they meet because that means that his feelings aren't shallow or fleeting.

Eurgh it's hard to choose!

In real life I'd probably go for #2, but in literature I prefer #1. Most of the time. It just makes for more drama and tension between the characters if they don't get along, rather than 'Oh she's my best friend and I'm in love with her and I'd do anything for her and she doesn't like me like that BOO HOO'. Big exaggeration, I know, but still.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

I think both types can be appealing. No kind character should be perfect and you should be careful with the douchebaggy characters -- very often the writer's and any given reader's idea of what counts as 'irredeemable' differs, and it can be really fucking creepy and sad and even hard to believe if the girl falls for the reformed douchebag but never holds him accountable for his past actions. I mean, if you're going for creepy and sad, then, sure. But if you're going for healthy romance, you have to be careful with that.

With kind characters you run the risk of them turning out to be Nice Guys™, who believe that just because they're nice to a girl, that girl has to love them back, or owes them romantic attention, and they get angry when the girl isn't interested in them that way. Also something to keep in mind.

I'm a Mr. Darcy lover if only because I'm a total Elizabeth type that just cuts down on the ego the second I smell douchebaggery. So to have a guy who can put up with that AND find that endearing, loveable and attractive? Hell yeah, I'm holding onto him! This isn't to say I like jerks since, for the record, Darcy isn't really a jerk and mean spirited, he's just ever so misunderstood.

Darcy-type, I find their character to be higher quality too. The other guy-type is usually too predictable in books and the Darcy-type aren't generally real jerks anyway, but actually turn out to have the purest love for the woman because it began and ended as true love and not a teenage best friend of the girl crush type of love...that's my favorite at least.

I was going to say nice guy but you mentioned Darcy and Jace...

But then you mentioned Peeta then I was back with nice guy - THEN YOU SAID JACOB AND NOW I'M CONFUSED.

Personally, not matter how much I love Darcy, Jace and any other jerky characters that end up being nice... I'd say that I'd go for the one who's always been nice. I love Darcy, but when it comes down to it, I'd rather have Mr Bingley, you know? I love the Bingleys, the Peetas, the Williams (from Downton Abbey) of this world!

Also may I add that I don't count Jacob Black in that category - he's definitely a jerk.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

I personally say the nice guy. Too often we're told that we can change guys with love. *rolls eyes* Doesn't leave much room for the nice guys who feel like they have to jerks in order to get a girl. Yes that happens. My bf is an example of the guy who couldn't get the girl, because he's a nice guy. (But then again he got me. That's a longer story XD)

-mini rant- Girls complain a lot about guys not treating them nice, but when they have a guy, who's been there, and has always been there and is the 'nice guy', they just want to be friends. I know it has to do a lot of genetic coding and women being attracted to dominance, but when I read books about it, I'm not impressed. If a guy treats me badly, I'll do the same and won't give him the time of day. End of story. -and mini rant-

It's ultimately your book and you can do what you want. Not saying any different either way, but I thought I'd give my honest two cents on this aspect.

Re: Ladies, the guy you prefer...

Oh, yes.
I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Malcolm Cooms. I want that guy who's a good friend with a heart of gold and a long-suffering spirit, often gentle... but who can also be tough and strong-willed when it suits him. And you know what? That's not just the Nevilles of the wizarding world; that could describe Strider (or Faramir, or Legolas, or Frodo, or Sam, or Merry, or Pippin) from Lord of the Rings, too. Or, in some ways, Al Giordino from the movie Sahara. Also somewhat describes Sam in the Transformers movie, or Westley in the Princess Bride. Kind of like Danny from Hawaii 5-0, too. Friendly, oh-so gentle with Gracie and other kids, constantly bantering with Steve, but threaten the people he cares about; and it's Watch out World! because man, oh man-- he can cross the line too! (Shooting the bad guy-- a former friend!-- in the knee to make him answer questions-- who'd have thought? He's been hanging out with Steve (total badass, but not a jerk, Steve. Steve doesn't really do the gentle thing though. And "friendly"- well, definitely not Peeta friendly.) too long.)

One other thing: as Keanu Reeves says in the Replacements: "Chicks dig scars." This is true. The amount of h/c and angst out there is a clear testament to this. We like guys with scars because they're tough. That said, not every scar will turn on every girl. Some girls want guys that are really broken (all the better to fix them up and rebuild them from scratch... OR because they think they don't deserve any better). Some girls don't care how the guy got his scars, it all about him being tough. They're the type who settle for guys with "self-inflicted" scars from choosing to do stupid and/or dangerous things for the fun of it, like hockey players and gang members. Some girls just want guys who have been through enough shit to recognize what's good in the world and treasure it all the more. Guys who aren't particularly proud of their scars, but have them because life has taught them a lot through hard circumstances, and they've come through it. That last kind is the kind I like-- but not all of those scars are physical, either.

Since I'm unforgiving towards douchbaggery behaviour I'd say the kind guy.
Then again, I'm totally aromantic so let's just say that's my most rational choice, lol.

Well.... for me it depends upon more than just that, but for the sake of this question, 90% of the time I will like the Jerk with a Heart of Gold more than the nice guy hero. The jerks tend to have a lot more depth in stories and I can sympathize with them a lot more than I can with the nice guy. That's why I never really liked Peeta that much.

I like both. The Darcy character gives you the sense that the girl was totally wrong about him and just makes everything a little bit more funny. Plus, I like the tall, quiet, kind of awkward guys in story, it's cool. I think that weighs a bit over the Peeta from Hunger games nice-to-her-from-the-start kind of thing. I'm not so sure....

I can't choose! I would usually choose the Mr. Darcy sort of character, but then you just HAD to throw Peeta in there!

I think I am the only person on this earth who isn't head over heels in love with Darcy. I don't want a Darcy. I want a Tilney/Brandon/Knightley/Wentworth, ANYONE but Darcy. I know he changed. I really do, and I think he's an amazing person after the change. But he wasn't nice. And that's always the thing that sticks out to me. I can't really forgive him for some of the rude things he says at the beginning of the novel. I love that he changes, but I would never be able to truly fall in love with the man. The ones who stick out to me in any work of fiction are the Peetas. The sweet, nice guy that you can honestly see yourself spending the rest of your life with. Both in fiction and in real life, I prefer the nice ones. I couldn't see myself spending my entire life with Mr. Darcy. But I can see myself with the guys who have always been amazing and sweet from the very beginning.

I loved Peeta. I like nice guys (sooo tired of the "girls fall for the bad boy" cliche) but not "nice guys," you know, the ones who think that their friendship means that the girl owes him a return on his romantic feelings or sex. I love Peeta (I mean, LOVE). He never tried to manipulate Katniss into a relationship, but it was always about her well-being. He never (that I recall) got jealous of Gale or tried to pressure Katniss into "choosing" him. I think that's one of the best examples of unrequited love (though, of course, it WASN'T unrequited, Katniss just had to realize how she felt about him) I've read, better than the stories where the best friend is in love with the female protag and everyone knows it except for the protag and she's portrayed as horrible for not noticing or not returning his feelings for so long. "Friendzoning" pisses me off. You don't become friends with someone because you think you might get sex out of it--that isn't a friend at all. Or a nice guy.
