Na-No-RIH-Mo, because I am a rebel like that. And the several relatives of mine who do Nano also pronounce it that way, so possibly it is genetic as well?

Na-no-vre-mo with a short e sound and an o without the "u" sound in the end. Since I'm Swedish. When I talk English (= in school, since I'm an IB student) I use na-no-wry-mo.

WRY. I never really thought of it as "WRY-ting" until long after I was used to saying it that way, I just instinctively went with WRY. It seemed more natural to say out loud.

I called it WREE-Mo when I first started, but quickly converted to WRY-Mo. I was studying Italian at the time so that was the vowel sound that seemed most natural. Similarly, I had a friend who went to college near Lima, OH, and I always pronounced it like the capital of Peru, not like the bean.

WRY. I don't comprehend how anyone can think it's WREE. No one says any of the other syllables wrong, so why that one? Like, you don't see people debating over how to pronounce 'Na,' 'No' or 'Mo.' I get very angry about this, especially when certain well-known YouTubers say it wrong, because they're encouraging other people to say it wrong. *eye twitch* It's a pet peeve of mine.

Whenever I read it to myself I say WREE. It's always been how I read it and I quite like it that way. xD Though now I'm starting to just call it "NaNo" when people know what I'm talking about.

I've always said WREE. I know that you don't say "wree-ting" but you don't say "NO-vel" or "moan"-th either yet everyone says NaNo like nanotechnology. And Nah-naw-wri-muh sounds absurd, so we're all mispronouncing it anyway, say it how you want. :D

Until this thread, I didn't know anyone pronounced it anyway BUT Na-NO-WRI-MO. Then again, most people I know say/write it as simple "NaNo" as in technology. My first thought was, "Well, it's WRI-ting, not WREE-Ting... but then I thought about the novel not being pronounced the "correct" way or the month part and thought, "Well, obviously that isn't a good argument. However, another point occurred to me... The point of the month is WRITING... so it kind of makes sense to emphasize that part of the whole thing correctly even if you did nothing else. It wasn't a compelling argument, but an interesting one. Then I read that Christ Batey pronounced it "WRY-MO. That's enough for me. He made it, he can decide it. It's only courtesy.

Because it sounds like Rye bread. :3 On the other hand the "Wree" in "wree-mo" sounds like something said on a roller coaster (Wreeeeeee!--it's a long story involving a swollen bottom lip because I, as an extremely clumsy thirteen-year-old, went careening into a pole, so instead of "whee!" it came out as "wreeee!").....

I started with WREE because the long E sounds nicer. I was living in the UK at the time, had no real contact with any other Wrimos (which I pronounce WRY if that isn't crazy enough). When I moved to California the next year I met up with Wrimos, who pronounced NaNoWriMo very differently, like calling petrol gas :)))

Wree cause when I see "ri" I think "ree" due to the Japanese pronounce of the character in hiragana/katakana and my nickname is Ri and I say "ree". It's force of habit and I can't switch to save my life.

NaNoWRYMo. My mother, despite the fact this is my tenth year doing NaNo, still pronounces it "nahnuhwrahmuh," all same pitch. Ugh.

Wree. I have a learning/linguistic problem, and just assign random pronunciations to every letter, which are occasionally correct but sometimes not, so I do it only to certain sounds.

Haha I never even thought about this before! :D But now that I think, I say "WREE / RIH ". That's because I'm Finnish and I tend to spell it in the Finnish way since it's just easiest to me. :'3 Although I have to admit I rarely even use the whole name. Basically I just say "Nano". (Na as in English word "now", and No as in English word "not".)

Seriously. I'd understand all the whining about "but it's not wreeeeting" if they'd apply the same standards to the whole thing, for crying out loud. At least the people saying that it's about how the creator pronounces it have a valid argument!

When I first saw it written somewhere and didn't know what it was, I thought, "What the heck is a Na-No-WREE-Mo?!" After I learned that the Wri was for Writing, I started pronouncing it "Wry" in my head and when I said it out loud. If I didn't know about the event and heard someone say "Na-No-WREE-Mo" and then they explained what it was, I'd wonder why the heck they said "Wree" for writing. The "Mo" not being probounced "Muh" doesn't bother me as much because it rhymes with "No" that way. Now that I know what it is, though, it doesn't bother me if people say "Wree," even if it makes me think of a somewhat offensive term used in Clerks animated*. If it sounds better to you, it doesn't bother me. *sorry. :/

For me it sounds awkward saying both because of my accent, so I tend to say Na-No-Rhi-Mo The "ih" bit on it's own sounds a bit like Fonzie.

I always use WREE. It's a force of habit now Maybe it should be pronounced Nah-No-Wry-Muh with the way month is pronounced, but the Wree-Mo just has a better ring to it in my opinion

I started with WREE, but now I use them both. My friend who introduced me to all of this says WRY, and I never thought about why until I learned what the site/program was and what it was all about. I usually just say NaNo, but for the rest, it's po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. ;)

Also, I'm one of those absolutely horrible people who correct others when they say "WREE", to the extent that my friend now says "Na-No-WREE-WRY-Mo". :D Except when I talk to my family, in which case it's "Na-No-Ree-Mo" (I'm Finnish, and that's just how we pronounce stuff. I ignore the "w" because it's too difficult.)

Nan-o-wry-mo is the long way. My group has just been calling it nano for the last five years or so. Although I suppose if you went by the actual words it would be Na - Nah - Wry - Muh - that is if you were using the same regional inflection and accent I am, which you most likely aren't. Why don't we all just call it a darn good time and let it go at that?

I say it as WRY-mo. My friend keeps pronouncing it as WREE-mo though, and since she talks to the other officers in our writing club about it, they've started pronouncing it that way too. It bugs the heck out of me. I'm too pro-WRYmo, haha.

Na-No-WRY-Mo when I speak English (which isn't very often). But I think Na-No-WRY-Mo is too bulky to say in an otherwise Swedish sentence so I have to Swedicize it a little, then it's something like Na-No-Vree-Mo (no "-u" in the end of mo).

When I first saw it written it was "Nanowrimo", so I thought it was one word, and have use Na-No-Wree-Mo. Also, Knights Who Say Wree; genius XD .

I started saying Wree-mo because that's how you would pronounce it in dutch and I hadn't really thought about the English sound. Now it seems to be stuck in my head, so it'll probably stay that way.

I've always said "ree", and am stuck in the rut now. But in my own defense, there are a number of words that change vowel sounds when they become plural, are combined, or prefixes or suffixes are added. For example: Joke and jocular (oak >ock) octopus and octopi (and pretty much that whole family of -us to -i plurals) phobia and phobic (ee >ih) scheme and schematic (ee >eh) Inscribe and inscription (long i> ih) revise and revision (long i> ih) or even WRITING and WRITTEN (long i> ih) >GASP< Maybe it should be Nano-RIM-o! Furthermore, I count NaNoWriMo as falling into the acronym subset, which REGULARLY includes shortened forms of words in which vowels change sounds. For example: SETI: Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (Notice the ih>ee) SCUBA: (Underwater's uh >oo, Apparatus's ah >the schwa uh) And, as has already been mentioned ad nauseum, both Os in Nanowrimo uniformly have their vowel sounds changed from a short O to a long O sound, so why not change the I as well? But, the funniest reason I can think of to support my position is that I'd rather be a Reemo than a Wrymo... because then I can claim name-sharing with the butt-kicking Remo Williams and aspire to write a character like Chun who cries over soaps, whines about processed food without being able to pronounce MSG, and has the toughness and acerbic wit to punch his finger through a piece of wood and say "Find a nail," when asked where to put it when Remo's done with it.

When I first saw it I immediately pronounced it Na-No-Wree-Mo (I was learning Japanese at the time I first heard of it, if that helps you understand why), but I flip flop between "wry" and "wree" now. And if anyone hasn't noticed, people arguing "wry" because it's "writing": there's a huge hole in your argument (novel doesn't rhyme with noble, and the "mo" in month doesn't sound the same as the "mo" in mote). But I'm beating a dead horse by bringing that up when so many others already have. Anyway, it's because of that that I believe people should be free to pronounce NaNoWriMo however they want to. I prefer to just say NaNo--it's less clunky than constantly saying or typing NaNoWriMo, and you eliminate the wry/wree debate.

Nano-ree-mo. Ree-mo sounds much better then wry-mo, it flows off the tongue much more smoothly. "Modem" stands for "Modulator-demodulator", but we don't pronounce it Mod-eem, we pronounce it mode-em. If we are going to pronounce it as nano-wry-mo, why not pronounce it as nano-wry-muh? If we are requried to say it as wry because it stands for writing, shouldn't we say the last syllable as "muh" because month starts with a "muh" sound, not a "mo" sound. I think if you saw "nanowrimo" without knowing what it stood for, most people would pronounce it as nano-wree-mo. It's also the only way that I have heard it pronounced, so so there. Obey me or suffer my displeasure. ;-)

It really just depends on how the person who you learned it from pronouced it. Well, maybe some people discovered the site on their own, but I heard about it from a friend, and she says WRYMo, so I say WRYMo too because that's how I learned it.

(is this an all-age thread?) ...er, the word 'reaming' which refers to, er, guys placing private parts of their anatomy into the concluding part of someone else's gastrointestinal tract. Might be perfect for some people's novels, but not for mine! :-& I get round the 'yeah but it's therefore 'wry-MUH' thing by saying that -mo rhymes with -no and is therefore blates better. Nah-No-WRY-Moe. I'm not even sure why the WREE would get said, I can't offhand thing of a wri- word with the i pronounced like an "ee". Hmm. And as for "moe" over "muh" or whatever, if it's "mo" it's "moe" to me. (Like slow-mo.) It doesn't become "muh" until the n gets tacked on.

I say WREE-Mo, but only because that is how it was pronounced the first time I ever heard about it in one of Hayleyghoover's videos on YouTube. I'm sure if it was pronounced WRY-Mo when I was first introduced, I would have probably picked that up and started saying it like that. I don't really care how people say it, we all know what we're talking about. I just say NaNoWREEMo.

I have no preference. I say it both ways, and I heard it said first as WREE-Mo, but that's not my point. To everyone who's using the excuse that it should be WRY as in Writing, then shouldn't it be NAH as in Novel? Na-NAH-WRY-Mo? I mean, I don't know anyone who pronounces novel as NO-vel. The answer is obviously no. Why, because it sounds weird. Therefore, this debate is complete subjective and it makes absolutely no difference how you pronounce it.

This is as true for the pronunciation of NaNoWriMo as it is for many characters and places IN novels! And I have no problem with pronouncing things wrong (I even have friends who move letters around accidentally), it can be funny when/if it gets made into a movie or you see an interview with the author and you go 'You say it like THAT?!' I had not even thought about. I haven't SAID NaNoWriMo to anyone, only typed it, so the discussion had not come up. In the same way that if you read a book and get the names a bit wrong. It really doesn't matter in either case. It won't detract from your enjoyment of the month or the book, the only people it will upset are the people who do care! Also, claiming it purely on how you would say the entire word is a little dangerous due to accents, for both sides of the argument. Some people have described noises (like in 'novel' and 'month') that I cannot understand and so I think they are saying the words differently to me anyway! (Apologies if any of these points have already been made, I have to admit there were 15 pages and I didn't read all the comments.)

NaNoREEMo, just from looking at it. If we must pronounce it as NaNoWRYMo, because the "Wri" stands for "writing", then we must pronounce it Na Nah WRY Muh. Remember, the first syllable in "novel" isn't pronounced like the word "no", it is pronounced like "Nah". And the first syllable in "Month" is pronounced as "Muh", not as "Mo". So, we have an inconsistency either way. NaNoWRYMo maintains consistency with the word "writing", but not with "novel" or "month". NaNoREEMo doen't maintain consistency with any of the component words, but is consistent with what "NaNoWriMo" looks like. Either way, the writing is what matters.
