What do you prefer to write with?

or

do you prefer to write long hand?

Why?

I like writing long hand. I don't really know why. I love writing with different colored pens and I love the crinkly sound the page makes when you've written on both sides of it.

Word processor. You can go faster and type whatever comes to mind. When I write long hand, I tend to get ahead of where I'm at on paper.

I much prefer to write longhand. It's much easier for me to think while writing by hand, I suppose; and, of course, there's no distracting internet. It's actually very difficult me to just type my novel, which makes NaNoWriMo rather annoying at times. Several times I've just written in a notebook at school and the typed it up in my word document.

I take my notes by hand in a notebook that's designated to the story, but do all my writing with a word processor. My hands just get too tired and I get frustrated when my story isn't coming out fast enough and causing me pain, so longhand is kind of out for me.

I'm not the fastest typer and it's easier for me to lug a notebook around than a laptop. (Plus, it's less likely to be stolen if left unattended.)

Before my first Nano, I always wrote long hand then typed it out. For my first Nano, I typed it straight into the computer... and ever since, that's how I write. It's easier to get it all out and I don't feel tempted to go back. When I write in a notebook, I type it up every few pages... and edit, and change and get all worked up. Thus, I never finished a novel before Nano. So now I type it and don't look back over what I've done until I write the last line.

Word Document, typing. I can type about as fast as I can think, so that's good for me when it comes to writing all the good action scenes and dialogue scenes.

However, I split my note-writing half and half between my story notebook and a blank word document. That way I have several places to go to when I need ideas. (Plus, in my story notebook I can doodle and write side notes and all the goodies).

I generally do all my idea-jotting and planning in a notebook, as I like to scribble little diagrams and draw maps and pictures as well as just writing - which is a bit difficult to do with a computer.

But to actually write the story itself? No way could I do it longhand. My fingers would cramp up within a page or two, my frustrated brain would be zipping far, far ahead of my poor hand... and not being able to read the story afterwards would be a serious possibilty, as the faster I write the scribblier and more demented looking my handwriting gets.

So computer all the way for me.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

I prefer to type. When I write longhand, I always have trouble when I want to go back and add in bits here and there or move them around because there's limited space once you've started filling things up. Typing, on the other hand, allows for simple shoving text aside whenever necessary. I also have less problems with my inner perfectionist taking over and critiquing my handwriting and spelling errors and such when there's standard print that takes care of the handwriting problem and spellcheck to make up for any spelling errors. Not that spellcheck is perfect, but it helps.

I prefer to type as I type faster and I can think more while typing and not worry too much about typos (easily corrected). Longhand is mainly to let my thoughts ramble on, and I tend to just summarize the story instead of having specific action and dialogue.

I go the long way for sure: write by hand then type. I find I can fill in a lot though when I'm typing. Writing by hand is really just to get most of the ideas out and if I feel myself coming in short or if I forgot something I can fill in as I type it up.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

I'm an impatient writer, so I like to use the good 'ol laptop.

Longhand takes far too long to get down- I can write a whole page on the computer in the time it would take me to write two paragraphs by hand if the juices are flowing. Also, my thoughts tend to run ahead at full speed and if I'm doing it the long way I tend to leave out words or phrases entirely and that gets on my perfectionistic nerves. And my hand starts to cramp after only a page of longhand, so there's that to consider...

But I actually kind of admire those of you who do it by hand first. You probably have better handwriting than mine.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

Pen and paper for me. The words just flow more easily than when I'm looking at a blank screen, plus with a notepad there are no distractions such as Facebook, Solitaire or Minesweeper.

I like to lug my CD player downstairs, put it on the dining room table with a selection of 3 or 4 CDs that are my designated writing music for the month, then sit and write at the table. I am only allowed to get up from the table if I'm desperate for the loo, but otherwise I have to sit there and get my 2,000 words done.

Keeping track of wordcount is not that horrendous, I make a note in the margins at the top of each page of what the total is from the previous one, then once I finish a page, I split it into four or five sections, add them up and put the new total at the bottom. I average between 500-600 words per page so it's fairly easy to say to myself "Right, four pages and I'm done for the day."

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

I outline/take notes in longhand, but I write on my laptop. My handwriting gets atrocious after a short while--I could give doctors a run for their money--and I'd like to be able to read what I've written. I also find when I'm rushing to get a lot written, I hold my pen too tight and my hand hurts. I hated school exams for that reason.

So typing means I get things out as fast as my head thinks of it without it causing (much) pain, it's easier to edit, and well, it's just easier full stop. Plus if I ever pursue publishing, I'm just going to have to type it up anyway.

I love writing longhand, but it takes so dang long for me that I usually go with the computer. When I was younger I didn't always have ready access to a computer (I shared with siblings, so we had to take turns) so I wrote in notebooks. I still have most of them, actually.

So, I guess I prefer using the computer, because I can get my ideas down faster and I can do research at the same time if need be.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

I type because it's faster, but only with the actual novel. I write out all of my notes in long-hand, so that I can spread them out around me as I write. It's faster for me to shuffle through papers than to Alt-tab through dozens of documents. It also helps me stay organized, since I now have a binder full of research, notes, sketches, etc. for my novel. Writing long-hand is therapeutic, but I can't write 50,000 words in a month by hand; I'm too slow. But I type like a Tasmanian devil! :P

I type, I have to. I type at around 125 WPM while maintaining accuracy. It's nigh impossible for me to trade that in for long-hand when I can compose at the speed of thought.

I do love writing in cursive however, and know that it is a dieing art among my generations and ones to follow.

I prefer using a computer because I type a lot faster and if I think of something I want to add in pages ago, I can just go to that point in the paper and make it happen... the only down fall with me is sometimes I think of scenes while working and open a blank word document and email it to my self.... I end up with pieces to add and worry about them getting lost... lol

Hope that helps!!

I usually write in my head long before any writing comes into play. I often actually speak out most of it, especially dialogue. This has earned me a number of stares from others who can't fathom why I'm ranting... and then doing my own comebacks.

But when I get to the actual writing-it-down, it's the laptop or bust. I mean, if I absolutlely cacn't get to the laptop, then I might scribble it down on the back of an envelope or whatever, but that's just until I can get back to my laptop again.

I type my novel using microsoft word. That way I don't have to type it up later after writing it out by hand. Also, my handwriting is absolutely terrible and I can barely read it and it is much easier to edit within a word document than edit something written out by hand. I am also faster at typing than handwriting and it's much easier to copy and paste it to a site if I want to share it when I type it. Microsoft word also provides a word counter so I wouldn't have to count the words myself.

I prefer longhand usually, during non-NaNo season - my ideas flow better for some reason when I've got a pencil and paper. Besides, computers can be distracting (*cough cough Facebook).

During NaNo i find it's easier just to use a computer for NaNo --- the word count being a large factor, as well as speed of typing vs. writing longhand.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

2002-2003 I wrote the beginning a few middle scenes and the end, and then typed it in to fill in the blanks.
2004-2007 I wrote mostly then typed, just because it relaxed me and it helped me be able to get away from the PC because all that distracted me was my Yahoo Pool league (XP & BH repesent) and also the relationships I was in.
2008 I decided to write mostly in paper since I still had not gotten a laptop nor had my parents, so I went back to my 02-03 stage of things, write as much out as possible, then type in to confirm word count. (Still not sure how my mom used to count each individual words on the page. I would probably do that later and just mark off each page with the word count then add them all together but anyway not my forte.
2009 New relationship new laptop in the family and ipod touch, Technological NNWM took off! I aimed and only missed it by 4,000 words I think (could be mistaken) and I think script frenzy was off by 10 pages.
2010 I took off, writing and typing, I used the best of my talents, I do better writing with long hand, but editing is easier when you can take a fresh look at what you have written and type it out in a quick edit process which adds things on that I may have wanted to put in but forgot about because it was a late night, and I achieved it, I also did add a word count to every scrap of piece of items i wrote on so I could tally, the only hardest challenge is grouping it all together and not losing it lol but last year was the year I won ScriptFrenzy and NaNoWriMo, sadly due to other things I could not participate fully int Script, but NaNo... here I come!
2011 mostly typing.
2012 well might as well write for my right to survive, but I plan on beating out all challenges next year. From ScriptFrenzy, NaNoWriMo, and the two extra in June and August for fun :)

I write in a fancy-schmancy five-subject notebook, longhand. I would type, but since I'm still in school and they forbid any technology during class, I've taken to carrying it around with me and jotting down a few words every two seconds. And since I'm out of my house for most of the day.

I type it all up before I go to sleep - thank god that I type fast. But I don't type my actual story unless it's to edit/etc. I find it easier to write with a pen and paper, for me. Maybe because I half-edit as I go along. And that I don't tend to scratch stuff out, because I'm kinda anal about how my paper looks like. it has to be neat. No black-outs anywhere.

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

I'm way old school. I write my first drafts longhand with a fountain pen. ;-)

I don't know what it is, but when I write longhand I have an easier time falling into the world of the story. That makes it easier for me to write the story. Plus, I'm not at all tempted to edit as I go (well, other than crossing out the occasional line or paragraph). I used to be horrible about that when I did my first drafts on a computer. I'd spend months spinning my wheels on the same few pages, editing and re-editing and tinkering to get them perfect. You can't really do that when you're writing longhand.

When I type the draft in, I do my first round of revisions. Editing becomes a natural extension of typing that way.

I could never read my handwriting back! I type my story on an Alpha Neo (averaging a whopping 26 wpm, which is astounding for a woman who's made her living by typing for 45 years!!). For me, the Neo is easy to type on, the 4-line screen eliminates the urge to go back and edit, it gets me away from the computer so I'm not so tempted to procrastinate, and I can write absolutely anywhere. Everything gets uploaded to my desktop where it's saved and backed-up, printed out, and eventually transferred onto my laptop for editing.

I like typing and I can type quickly. Whenever I can't get to my computer and I want to write, however, I take out a pencil and my trusty notebook. I write other works often in my notebook, especially when I'm bored and I come up with a new idea. My notebook is usually a place for my first first draft and I edit it when I type, but not for NaNo. I don't like writing it down on paper and copying it over to my computer, so I this time I just map out what's going to happen next in my novel on paper and type out the prose when I can get to my computer.

Depends on which project I'm working on. I wrote most of a novel idea down on paper but the re-write will be done on my laptop. I like both, but I find myself wishing I could get my thoughts out faster when I'm writing long-hand.

I prefer to type my novel because its faster and readable. But if it's certain scenes that come up to me during school than I'll write it long hand because I won't have my laptop with me.

I can type faster than I can write long hand and since I'm left-handed, writing long hand has other challenges, the least of which is I DESPISE having pencil rubbings on the edge of my hand from rubbing my hand along what I've just written. Plus, most spiral-bound books are not made for lefties.

I use yWriter by Spacejock Software for my first drafts and MS Word for revisions & editing ('cause you can track changes).

Re: What do you prefer to write with?

it has to be typed eventually to be checked by NaNoWriMo, but I hand write when I cannot get to a computer (as I share a computer with my boyfriend) so I do both handwrite and type. There are days I type twice as much, but I will do anything to get 50,000 by November 30th. I also used word since I took college classes on it; I know it well.

It sounds very old fashion but I prefer long hand. I think better that way. It is more portable. I'm less tempted to go back and rewrite, edit, police. All things they tell us not to do during the first draft.

Depends.
I usually type my stories (spellcheck is my savior), but I don't mind writing out on good, old fashion paper. But I afterwards I type it up :P

I typically type when I know what I want to say because typing is the only way I can keep up with my thoughts, but my inspiration comes from writing with an ultra fine point pen and college ruled or any narrow lined paper. The more I am able to write on one page the better!

Type hands down! I guess that its because I type faster than I write. It took me half an hour or a bit more to hand write 500 words but it only takes me like fifteen to twenty minutes typed.

1-Do you prefer to type your novel (using whatever word processor)

*I do write with Word to write my entire novel because the publishers dont accept
hand writing work plus its easier to correct and all ..

2-do you prefer to write long hand?

*And I do hand writing as well in a note-book for my start before to go on Word,
just to make things in place (ie: plot development in 4 sections ) a drawing all about my
characters it helps me, I guess its not the same for everyone
