Because I write more than just novels. And author has more of an official ring to it. In my English class I am a writer. In the arts I am an author.

Right now I call myself a writer, but if I were to get published then I'd like to be called an author.
If I get published, then I don't really care if people call me a writer or a novelist or a publisher; just for the moment I don't consider myself an author and when people call me that then I am flattered. :)

Even then, I think I'd only call myself an author in certain situations, like discussing jobs, talking to readers, or explaining that yes, I'm published.

Writer. Frankly because author and novelist sound too pretentious, but I'd also argue that they're too narrowing -- I write lots of things that aren't novels and I don't consider myself specifically bound to one genre, while author implies, at least to me, that you're published and that being published is the point of what you're doing.

I normally refer to myself as a poet/song-writer because that's what I've written for the last 14 years (for the most part) and that's all I've had published. However, I've also tried my hand at short stories and (obviously) novels...I routinely tell people that I'm a poet, not a novelist. ^.^

Re: Which do you prefer to be called?

My mindset has always been the same. When I was merely writing stories, poems, plays, et cetera, I was just a writer.

But when I got a short story and poem published (this was a long time ago in an obscure book that I made basically no money on, but I was published nevertheless) I was an author and a poet. So now that's how I think of myself: as an author and a poet.

Once my first play is produced I will be a playwright. Time will tell. As it is I'm merely a writer of plays at the moment.

And, of course, an author and poet.

Yeah, novelist to me r people who write novels. An author has wider range and writes all sorts of fiction/non-fiction. A writer is my most preferred one as it means it's mostly fictional writing and ranges from poems to songs etc.

D!

Nanowrimo is the only time I write! (I mean, I used to write fanfiction but that was only one of my many fannish hobbies) In fact I do Nano to focus on a creative medium that I otherwise never touch. I have to work hard to come up with story ideas, writing is far from natural to me, and heck I don't even read that much! I don't identify as writerly.

But if I had to be one of the above, then C, "writer". The other two sound awfully pretentious for someone like me. "Oh, I wrote two Nanowrimo projects. I'm an ~*~author~*~ now!"

Foremost: Writer.
I've been a writer (of sorts) as far back as I can remember. I'm better at it now, and intend to continue to improve.

Ultimately: Author.
As most here seem to agree, this implies a degree of professional success with my writing. I intend to get that too.

I am still working on my first novel, and have two others planned; but if I think of myself as a Novelist, I feel slightly contained. Being an Author *feels* more open to a broad array of expressive output.
