It's also for those people out there who will pick up just about any book that has to do with vampires, just because they want to campare it with others they have read. Twilight has probably helped authors who wrote vampire books before it came out, just because twilight made people want to read other vampire books, so older series were revisited by fans who crave more. I thought it was a clever idea. A girl falls in love with a vampire. I don't have problems with that. It just wasn't done too well for my tastes. If you read the book with a realistic view, it's actually pretty creepy. Edward is creepy, controlling, and a stalker. No one will have a good relationship with a person like that. Then the angst got to me after a while. Then again I am coming from a perspective of going through bad health issues and losing a lot of people close to me to death in my short life. I think it would have done well if it was written better. I don't think it ruined vampires. Although it has affected society. It amazes how there is a huge married woman fan base for that series. Twilight is full of unhealthy ways of dealing with situations. I think it only feeds it more with the idea that love and marriage can happen among the angst like that. So for me personally, Twilight just added to the "I don't like vampires" blues-thing. The only vampires I kind of liked were the ones in the watch series by Sergej Lukianenko in which the vampires are not special at all, they are just there, like all the other magical beings. Only that they could only get more powerful by feeding on human blood which was limited for them since they had to get some kind of licence for each of their victims which was rare anyway. So yeah, there were only a few powerful vampires in the series, I think 3 or maybe 4, so that were tolerable vampires. I like the concept of the vampire being a murderer or a beast more than them being so fabulous. It's annoying when people all feel the need to write something similar in the hope of catching some of the hype, and the obsession with vampires lately is just another phase. She was spouting out nonsense about vampires and romance and eternal love, and I just wrote it off as a silly fascination. But she persisted, shoving her book in my face and pestering me day after day until I read it. Given she was my lab partner, I gave in to her ridiculous demands, and read five chapters. I can't remember ever being quite so disgusted with a piece of literature in my life. And it had nothing to do with the vampires and romance. It was because: 1. This book was aimed at pre-teens, and gave horrible messages to children with with no reedeming valuable lessons under the surface. 2. Bella was quite possibly the worst role model for a teenage girl I have ever had the mispleasure of reading about. This only amplified to a level of almost rage when I was dragged to a Twilight movie several years later in which Bella attempted suicide via jumping off a cliff from nothing other than depression of a break up with Edward. I walked out of the movie, sat in my car, and fumed for an entire hour. Did Twilight ruin hundreds of thousands of young vulnerable minds? Yes. Did it ruin vampires? Eh, I don't think so. Two years into the Twilight hysteria, I came across a scene from what I guessed was a historical fiction television show set in the Civil War, and when I inquired, my boyfriend's mother told me it was 'The Vampire Diaries'. I admit, I laughed. I wrote it off as being a Twilight carbon copy, and dismissed it. But I couldn't control my curiousity after a few days, so I looked it up. And I began watching it. I quickly learned that what I had seen was a typical flashback, but even that didn't redeem the first five episodes. They were horrible. Very Twilight-ish. Why did I continue? I don't really know--I think I was just so desperate to see that gorgeous Civil War Flashback that I pressed on with it despite my better judgement. And once the flashbacks started, the present-day part of the show miraculously became much more bearable. And after a while, I found myself enjoying it. I was a little ashamed, due to the obvious Twilight comparison. By the end of the first season, the twists were much better, the acting had improved drastically, and I liked it. There are many episodes that are too Twilight-ish for my tastes, but I watch every one because I know they make up for it in time. Recently, I've become dissapointed in the string of cheesy, self-indulgent episodes but I hang on. Because in every episode, there are those little glimmers of story-telling genius that make me marvel in admiration, however subtle they may be. So no, I don't think Twilight ruined vampires. Twilight was my first encounter with vampires, and it was awful encounter at that, but The Vampire Diaries enthralled me and led me to more notable vampire stories a la Ann Rice and ect. that have captivated me. I do believe a vampire romance can be done right, but "Twilight", "True Blood" and yes, 'The Vampire Diaries' are all, sadly, too focused on catering to the masses. But I do believe in a perfect world, it can be done. Some of the side characters are interesting, and there's a lot of potential that just gets eaten up by the romantic plot-tumor. There's a really excellent fanfiction called Luminosity that is, in my opinion, exactly what Twilight SHOULD have been (I say fanfiction, but it's really more like two original books). The only difference, to start, is that Bella is actually an intelligent, competent main character. The first few chapters follow the events of the book, then Bella because Bella makes much smarter decisions the plot quickly becomes completely original. It put me off my OWN vamp story for awhile I was so icked out by the whole story (mainly because I found the relationship to be rather abusive, bella to be a big fat wimp, etc). I should have known after I read the first chapter and put it down for 6 months before picking it back up to finish. There will always be good and bad vampire books. It was part of a trend about a specific kind of vampire story--and within that specific kind of vampire story, there are good stories and bad stories. Not everyone is a fan of the "vampire love story" but that's true for all story types. There is no right or wrong way to write a vampire--they're fictional beings! They're not real! They are different for every author who has written a vampire story. I'm not a Twilight fan at all (for reasons people have already mentioned in this thread) but the fact is bad books don't have the power to make good books of the same genre or subgenre bad. It can turn readers off the genre but I think that's more psychological than anything. Every time my friend and I go into our local bookstore we assess the bookstands: how many black covers, how many vampire novels, how many teenage angst stories with a supernatural romance thrown in? I have to say, recently it's been getting better with at least two out of the five stands showing colours other than black, white and red. So yes, I hate Twilight for flooding the bookstores with vampire/supernatural love stories. I wouldn't hate it quite so much if these books were actually written well, but most of the time they're written with a level a twelve year old could achieve. I applaud the authors for finishing their novels (a feat I have yet to accomplish) and for getting their story published, but I just wish they could have choosen a better subject. [/quote] About the whole it wont ruin anything for you unless you let it, what if most-all writers only write vampire and were-wolf fantasy and your left with a giant heap of generally sub-average books (in the creative department at least) to choose from if you want a new fantasy book... part of the reason I got into manga and Twilight is there as well. I'd actually be tempted to use a version of the first paragraph in a novel. Either way yeah I do also think Twilight is horrible to the young minds who don't realize how horrid Edward even is. Although I do have to admit that Twilight is a bit of a "stepping stone" or "gateway" into vampires... my only trouble is weeding out the ones worth reading/watching... although I myself don't generally read vampire/undead stuff even before twilight.
