How you approach it can be very varied. a few suggestions: MC has always had the ability so she is a little abnormal, MC gets hit by something (see lightning, drowning, other cliche thing that inflicts injury) loses her memory and borders on the two worlds, just drop the MC feet first into the world a few times without warning.
