Dear fellow Nano participants I am calling on your aid with a school project. Surveys must be conducted as part of my research into radio drama and I would be most grateful if you would fill in this questionnaire. If there are some questions you feel you do not want to answer then by all means leave them blank :)
1. Do you listen to the Radio?
2. Do you listen to Radio Drama?
3. If the answer to the previous question was less than how often (on estimate) would you say you listen Radio Drama’s per week?
4. Are you male or female?
5. What is your age?
6. Which genre would most appeal to you and why?
7. Given a choice do you prefer 90 minute dramas or dramas which have been slip into 15-45 minute dramas and broadcast over a period of days or weeks?
8. What is it about audio theater that appeals to you?
9. Given a choice do you prefer straightforward audio or binaural beats (3D sound)
10. Do you listen over the radio, the internet or other?
1. I listen to certain podcasts if that counts 2. No, idea what Radio Drama even is (kind of interested) 3. ... 0 times a week (also by less do you mean yes?) 4. male 5. i'll just say im in high school 6. Fantasy, I really enjoy fantasy. Humor, I like to chuckle every now and again. and statistics (kind of like freakonomics), because I like listening to them. 7. prefer the small dramas broadcasted over days or weeks. 8. easy to use when walking or something. 9. ... have no idea what's the difference, how can sound be 3D when 3D is generally a visual term? 10. usually the internet, but on the radio every now and again.
1. Occasionally 2. Yes, but exclusively Old Time Radio or Podcasts 3. 4-6 times per week 4. Male 5. 27 6. Science fiction 7. Serial drama Much easier to listen to on a commute 8. Monaural, about half the time I only have one earplug in 9. Straightforward 10. All the drama I listen to is from podcasts, so the internet
3. If the answer to the previous question was less than how often (on estimate) would you say you listen Radio Drama’s per week? 3-6-ish
4. Are you male or female? Female
5. What is your age? 15
6. Which genre would most appeal to you and why? Fantasy
7. Given a choice do you prefer 90 minute dramas or dramas which have been slip into 15-45 minute dramas and broadcast over a period of days or weeks? A 90 minute drama.
8. What is it about audio theater that appeals to you? I love how it gives me a story, but also leaves that story open for my imagination to interpret it any way it wants to.
9. Given a choice do you prefer straightforward audio or binaural beats (3D sound) Straightforward audio
10. Do you listen over the radio, the internet or other? The internet or recordings.
3. If the answer to the previous question was less than how often (on estimate) would you say you listen Radio Drama’s per week? Not that often. I go through phases where I listen to radio dramas. Usually a couple of series per year. When that happens, I listen to a few every day for a month.
4. Are you male or female? Female
5. What is your age? 23
6. Which genre would most appeal to you and why? Science Fiction. I love Star Trek and Star wars. They both have a large fan base that strive to make good quality radio dramas. Because they are passionate about it, it shows in the work. Plus I love science fiction.
7. Given a choice do you prefer 90 minute dramas or dramas which have been slip into 15-45 minute dramas and broadcast over a period of days or weeks? I prefer the shorter because if I leave off, I will be somewhat satisfied with the story. There are more conclusions and smaller plot lines. I think you can build up a really good world with that in mind. The longer dramas tend to have more fluff.
8. What is it about audio theater that appeals to you? I pay more attention to the noises and voices. It leaves a lot to your imagination like books, but it also adds a lot of character to the characters. You can hear more of the emotion in the voice than text.
9. Given a choice do you prefer straightforward audio or binaural beats (3D sound) I am not sure what you mean. Do you mean sound effects in general? Because I love sound effects. If it was just people reading, then it would seem more like a audio book to me.
10. Do you listen over the radio, the internet or other? Internet
Anyway I should probably explain 3D sound since there seems to be some confusion. Binaural beets (best listened to through headphones) send two competing frequencies to either ear and without getting into too much detail because I really don’t know how to shorten it yet 3D sound is where you can judge where everything would be around you. For example you might hear someone talk as if they were speaking right in front of you, a machine could be wiring to your left and someone could be approaching you from behind on your right hand side all once. The singles play tricks on your brain giving you an impression that these things are actually happening, of course you still know that it is simply audio theatre but it becomes far more realistic. Although yeah I prefer straightforward as well. Water2770 Radio Drama in a nutshell is where a play or adaptation is transmitted over the radio, using sound effects, voiceovers and frequency among other things to convey the storyline to the audience. And it lets you imagine things for yourself unlike a visual medium which just shows you.
