I read equal amounts historical and contemporary fiction. Some of it romance. I love history, but I relate to contemporary literature. I got started reading romance a lot when my kids were babies; they were the right size to hold a book in one hand while feeding the baby, so I got my reading fix in spite of being so busy. I even learned to turn the pages with the hand that was holding the book.
