- Sell some short stories. This entails getting rejected a lot until you find an editor who won't reject you. It also requires an insane amount of editing.

- Change jobs. I'm currently a volunteer. I would rather like to get paid. If I can't find paid work, I'm going to volunteer somewhere else to shake things up.

- Screnzy. Fitting a new writing challenge around attempts to sell stories and get a better job is definitely BFS.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Make the big effort to turn my past novels into some serious income, part of my overall plan to become self supporting by the time Nanowrimo rolls around in 2012. This includes building up indoor sit still work along with the San Francisco Street Artist program and proceeds of my SBI website (possibly more than one by then) to where I'm doing 40 hours a week of productive activity. That includes all the business stuff and marketing.

I live on SSI and now that I live in San Francisco, I have help with the activities of daily living that I can't manage without help. So instead of falling into filth and getting sicker, I can spend my limited body energy on things that could let me make a living without earning so much I lose my medical coverage. That's the next stage.

Writing is a serious part of this plan. Writing is what I can do when my back and bad hip are too bad for me to get out of the house. I couldn't live just on the Street Art back when I lived in New Orleans because I could not get out enough days to earn a living, my health declined from overdoing it and eventually I crashed and burned. But if it's only part of what I do, it's good for a quick cash fix anytime I've got the strength.

I started off with a Big Scary Thing this year anyway. I wrote a Horror novel, something I always wanted to do from early childhood - and always chickened out on until now. What I've got is creepy, suspenseful, terrifying and it cost me several days of relaxing and coming down from the big scare just to write it - but I did it. So now the challenge is to turn that Big Scary Thing into a good professional quality Big Scary Thing that anyone who likes horror can pick up for an emotional roller coaster ride. It even has a potential for a series.

While I could keep busy on editing books all year to catch up, I may also try to get back to writing some novels during the rest of the year too. I've got my rollator coming this week, so December will also be when I get out and use my new Street Artist Program license to set up selling art on Fisherman's Wharf. That is just going to be fun. Even the streetcar to get down there is going to be a hoot and a half.

Write more and lots, and try to get short stories published in the local literature magazines!

Learn how to write poetry! Write poetry! Be less of a pretentious such and such than 90% of the poets out there! (already failed!)

Learn how to draw comics proper, quickly and by the end of December have something (drawing ability or script) which could be used in a webcomic!

Pass my first year of university! WHAT FUN! :D

*spoilers!* and then be a hero forever!

Well, I'm starting December off by getting married! That counts as a big, scary fun thing, I hope, seeing as I'm both terrified and ridiculously excited!

I'm going to keep doing the "write every day" thing I did this year. When NaNo rolled around, it made it so much easier to sit down and write, even if I had no clue what I was doing that day. I kicked it off last December by writing my Master's thesis, which was a blast and a half.

I'm finishing up my first Master's degree (yes, I want more than one) this spring, and I'm hoping to get into a doctoral program for next fall. Worst case scenario, though, I end up with a bit more free time than originally planned. I'll be fine if I don't get into the program.

Find a legitimate, stable job. No more waiting tables or working retail! I want something that doesn't make me seriously consider gouging my eyes out with a spoon so I have a reason to quit. This will be next to impossible, considering what my educational background is. I need a second Master's degree to get into the field I want, but I can't move somewhere with the program until my soon-to-be husband graduates from college.

-finish my novel, hopefully before the end of the year (but I'm kind of burned out so I'm taking a few weeks off)

For 2012:

-revisit a comic project I gave up a few years ago, reboot it, and write out a complete script so I can start drawing out the pages

-complete a series of paintings so I can produce a calendar for 2013. Currently there are 5-7 pictures done, depending on how you count.

-possibly begin the sequel to this year's novel, or start either of the 2 fantasy projects I have in mind.

My scary list for 2011/12

1. Edit nano starting in january, and have it out submitted to a publisher by summer (this may be a bit hopeful!)
2. Get a job lecturing (again, kind of a tough ask)
3. Write more academic articles to assist in getting said job
4. Learn to do the Beyonce single lady dance
5. Make a baby

Oh god, I've scared myself now!

* Get my novel published
* Apply to, get in to &amp; start to: re-train as a teacher
* And/or get a decent job with a decent salary with decent people, i.e. no bullies, no liars, no trampling under foot
* Have a look at all the other stuff I've written over the last three decades &amp; see if I think it might be publishable

Re: Your BFS Lists!

1. Finish this year's novel.
2. Edit my novel from 2009 while this year's novel rests.
3. Get into corsetry. I love the lines of a corseted figure, my body type is suited to it, and there's a pretty good change it'll help me manage my habit of overeating because I enjoy food so much.
4. Dance.
5. Spend at least 1 month going through and doing all of the writing exercises from Gail Carson Levine's Writing Magic.
6. Write a short story in dedication to Diana Wynne Jones, whose work has inspired my ever-growing desire to write children's fantasy.
7. Face off against the big, scary creative writing professor at my university and prove that genre writing is not a wasted or futile effort.
8. Learn to make bread from scratch.
9. Sing.
10. Work on my visual artistic skills. Perhaps get back into watercolors, though I'll probably be rubbish with them. Or maybe just focus on my best medium- ballpoint pen.
11. Never allow myself to be scared away from writing.
12. Give girls a chance. It's not their fault I'm too nerdy to relate. Common ground exists, I just have to force myself to find it.
13. Celebrate the female friends I do have. There aren't many of them, but they're the best friends I've ever had.

My Big, Fun, Scary (although mostly very scary) list:

1. Get. A. Job. This is a big one for me. I'm going stir crazy at home, and desperately need to work. Failing that, back to college it is, not that I can afford to do this. Prospects look bleak, but there must be something.
2. Lose some weight. My weight has yo-yo'd over the course of the past few years, and it's time for this to stop. I'll be happy to drop a dress size and get into a UK size 12 - that way my clothes will still fit, just maybe with a little extra room.
3. Start driving lessons. Not easy on a limited budget, but there's nothing stopping me from doing it now. Apart from ... yeah. Money.
4. Get something published. Anything. I'm going to work harder this year to do it, seeing as right now ... what else can I do? I'd rather spend my time doing something constructive.
5. Write another couple books that are bashing around inside my head and nagging me right now.
6. Do something with my life. Anything, Vicky, anything at all.
7. Complete ALL of the above tasks.

2011, and will be carrying over into 2012.
- Finish the novel (there were still holes on the middle of the story) ... &gt;.&gt;

- Finish editing novel.

- Polish the novel

- Work on next novel in the series, and the prequel. I was thinking of writing an in depth - background of how one of my character become like that.

- Continue the fanfictions that was abandoned when I'm doing nanowrimo.

2012

- Drawing something to make the novel more, well, 'visual novel'?

- Using the CreateSpace's offers for nanowrimo winning novel and give out one of the copy to my best friend who has been nagging me about me writing a story for, like, years. For their birthday present :D

- Preparing fo the 2012 Nanowrimo and start some research. :D

- Do the April Script Frenzy too.

- Taking a journalism internship, and hopefully could work for the newspaper as a journalist once I finished my university. :D

-Getting a boyfriend/girlfriend before my 20th Birthday. (Being singles sometimes suck when the people around you boasting about how awesome their date or something. &gt;.&gt;)

My husband is going to be away with his squadron for the first six months of next year. He'll be on land and in the US, but he'll only be able to visit a few times throughout those six months, despite the fact that he'll be within 100 miles or so for most of that 6 months.

Then, in the fall, we'll finally get to have our family reception. We only had a civil ceremony for our wedding, and only my parents got to attend, so the party for his family and for the rest of my family will be late next year.

I will likely actually be doing WriYe next year. It's a year-round version of NaNoWriMo.

-Dec-Feb: Shoot/complete and book exhibition for photo projet 'dry season in the Sahel'
-March/April: leave my current home in Africa, move me, hubby and kids to France (still don't even know where...)
-May onwards: find work + start a business building tree houses (no kidding).
-In the mean time, learn a whole lot more about planning a novel, plan one, figure out how I can give it more depth this time, and have an actual outline ready for November.
-If life is settled, start my MA in Graphic Design
-Organise a 1 year Greeland trip for 2013.
-Maybe edit my Nanovel 2011...
I'm excited + scared by it all...

3. Rewrite, edit, and revise short stories and submit them to literary magazines. Terrifying.
4. Figure out how to extend one of my short stories to 50K. It has the potential and lasted me almost half of that this NaNo.)
5. Go to my local off season writing group.
6. Meet WriYe goals.
7. Get a dog.
8. Walk across my state in the summer. Possibly a pipe dream, but I've already started the training. So, who knows?
9. Continue saving money for London in a couple years.
10. Strengthen acquaintances to friendships.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

I only have one huge big fun scary thing that I plan on doing in the gap that NaNo being over has left. I am an aspiring musician and songwriter, and I plan on starting up a songwriting challenge. I believe it will work something like a cross between NaNo, 50/90, and 30 Days 30 Covers. But, I do have a thread about it up in the 'Other Stuff' forum, so please look at that. I don't know if it will actually work, and it needs a snappy title, but I will be songwriting my way through January, and beyond.

I also plan on writing another novel. It will be told entirely through journal entries of an eighth grade girl (For the record, I am an eighth grade girl). Said girl will be doing the whole cliched leading two lives thing. At school she's this silent, awkward, anti-social girl, but on the weekends she goes downtown to the music school. And at her orchestra and with her friends from downtown, she's confident and outgoing with music and in general. Then, around a few months into the school year, one of her closest friends is going to transfer to her school. Conflicts and comedy ensues!

I'm sure I'll come up with more later, but this is my things for now.

My BFS List for 2012:

1. Start graduate school. Naturally, virtually all the remaining work for this will take place during December, but it'll still be a while before I know if I'll be able to go for my MS or not.

2. Present my research at the two symposia I've signed up for. Again, I've already done my part and it's a waiting game, but if everything works out this will remain my #2 goal.

3. Keep finding jobs. Contracts and seasonal gigs are my best bet if I'm gonna be out of here in late August, and I've already landed a couple. Now I just need to keep it up and find more... money is always nice to have if I'm about to become a grad student.

4. Finish redoing the yard. I want to put a butterfly garden in the front, build a new compost system in the back, dig out and re-rock the rest of the French drain, fill in the last few spots in the wildflower bed, turn our debris pile into mulch, and finish up the habitat project along our fence. Between that and keeping the vegetable garden going, I should have no shortage of things to do...

5. Finish my graphic novel script--target end date will be the middle of June, with the first two revisions done by the end of the year. At that point I'll feel ready to start looking for an artist collaborator.

6. Teach myself Python, PHP, and MySQL.

7. Start running again. My goals are to do a 5K in April, a 10K in June, and a half-marathon in August.

8. Keep up with my volunteer commitments.

- Find a place where I can start flying lessons -- either here or near the colleges I'm applying to
- Put down outlines for both of my sci-fi plot ideas
- Participate in Camp NaNoWriMo once at least (if exams aren't that stressing, then participate in both months)
- Read a novel biweekly -- hoping I can do this with my workload this year!
- ....... and a gazillion other things I cannot remember right now, but I guess these are my biggest and foremost!

Will have to post to blog with this stuff. Need to keep track of my life. And oh, I just remembered -- remember to write 5 things I did today in Memiary. It helps a lot when I need to remember when did I do what.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

1. Read 80 books
Last year I read 55 books; in 2009 I'd read 40 and this year I want to reach 75, though I'm still at 64. I try to keep open about most names on those annual lists, especially because I'm a Literature student and I never know what college is gonna throw at me, but I'd like to read the third volume of my awesome translation of the Arabian Nights, some Coetzee, Angela Carter, Tolkien, Borges, Cortázar, Melville, Goethe, Pirandello, Jorge Amado, Rushdie and some fun, nerdy stuff such as the Silmarillion, Game of Thrones, and so on.

2. Get strong again
My body's growing weaker since I stopped running. I'll always have a shortage of breath and the inability to go long distances because that's just how my body works, but I certainly can be much stronger than I am right now. I miss the feeling that my legs were effortlessly pushing me forward when I walked. I miss feeling confortable about myself exactly the way I am.

3. Explain to my mother why I've been avoiding her.
I'm an adult. I have my own house, buy my own toilet paper, pay my own electricity bill, study whatever I want, kiss whomever I want. I have wonderful friends and a charmed life, and if you're not going to respect any of that, I won't be insulted by you any longer (or something like that).

4. Cook more
Try to do some actual recipes rather than "I'm just gonna throw some canned tuna over this frozen pizza, that oughta taste nice". Try to make things from scratch. Some ideas: lasagna, cookies, bread, yakisoba, cheesecake, grilled zucchini with cheese. Try to do a lot of vegetarian/vegan things.

5. See Argentina and Uruguay again
There are little pieces of my heart scattered all over those beautiful streets. I want to go back and find them one by one, and maybe leave behind some new ones. If I can go with some crazy fun awesome friends, that's be an over 9.000 level of awesomeness.

6. Clean out my wardrobe
Sell most of it, buy some new clothes. Go for quality instead of quantity. Customize. Add laces and bows to everything. Have fun.

7. Get someone to clean my apartment once or twice a month
Because... workaholic slob at college? Not a pretty combination. AT ALL.

8. Maybe, just MAYBE, get back to swimming.
I have this huge huge trauma on swimming. My mother and I used to do it together (in different classes, of course, one for kids and one for grown-ups, but we'd arrive and leave together) until she had a major nervous breakdown, became paralyzed for psychological reasons, let herself go, quit and stopped driving me there and refused to talk about it forever again. I really liked it, and it's the most complete sport, and I miss it insanely.

9. Draw regularly again.
Another thing I miss doing!

10. Learn some Japanese, improve my poor French
Start reading some manga and Le Petit Nicolas!

11. Find love? Maybe?
You know, that'd be really really nice :}

My family is going to be traveling around asia for a couple of months in the new year (I live in Canada.) That pretty much covers big fun and scary in one go. Especially the security guys at airports: TERRIFYING!
On a smaller, or possibly even equeal note, I am going to be doing script frenzy in April.
I also plane to learn as much as possible about scripts, and plays and theaters, and shakespear, because that whole area is something I find really interesting.
Also, I might even be applying to a world college to do my last two years of high school; probably the one in northern Italy.
Hopefully with a scholarship, but we'll see.
As for immediatly this December, I want to go through and edit my novel; not neccesarily finish editing, but turn it into a second draft. Hopefully before the new year this will happen.
And of course there are fifteen days until I get onto winter break, including weekends.
I just realized that I have a lot of stuff I plan to do in the new year:P

But before all that, editing my novel is also a priority.

Write a novel a month. I've decided that I am going to do a Year of Novels, which means NaNo is every month through next November (I've already written over 4k on my December Novel, and it's not even midnight on December 1st yet, so I'm feeling good about this one so far).

Get several manuscripts publication ready. (Editing will happen during the part of a given month that I'm not writing the next novel or planning the one after it).

Getting another job so that I can become properly financially stable.

Finding a place to live. And then doing it again in June (this time with a friend).

Getting my legal name change. Starting hormone therapy (and possibly getting my legal gender change). Renewing my passport with the correct name and gender.

Starting taking Japanese (and possibly German) again.

Remember to eat, breathe and sleep.

.... And if I wasn't doing this much, I'd probably be bored. I may be a little bit nutty.

1. Find a career. That's a biggie. I got my Master's Degree a few months back, but I still haven't been able to find a job that isn't all about the french fry.

2. Finish my NaNo novel. It probably needs about 30k more words, and if I keep writing the way I did for NaNo, I should be done with it in the next 2-3 weeks (it took me 16 days to get to 30k, according to my stats).

3. Edit the NaNo novel--I have to rewrite chapter 8; it sucks. I also need to work on continuity as things changed a bit as I wrote.

4. Finish/Edit the novel I was working on pre-NaNo, but hadn't touched in months. The one I am writing for NaNo is a sequel to this one, so I have some changes to make before I can get back to it, but I'm hoping to have it finished by mid-January.

5. Self publish my two novels.

6. Start re-paying my loans--i do not want to be part of the 99% for the rest of my life.

7. Move out. I left home to go to Grad School and that was the happiest time of my life. I hated having to move back in because my family and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of things and I constantly find myself arguing with the rest of my family. I swear if I live here much longer, I will end up becoming an alcoholic.

8. Have a serious relationship. I've never had one before and I would love to actually be in one. Everyone I know is either married, engaged, or engaged to be engaged. There are also several people I know that are having babies. I think 25 is a weird age where you're either getting a job or getting married, and its weirder for those of us that have neither.

Write every day, so I can finish novels, so I can Smashwords them into the market and make a lot of very tiny amounts of money.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

There are a number of things that I want to accomplish this year and looking trough all of these lists of these amazing people attempting Big, Fun, Scary things, in my own head I've decided that there are some things that I just need to do and some things that are "Big, Fun, and Scary". I am 43 and have a 2 1/2 year old son. My wife (whose a decade and a half younger than me) are trying for our second child to round out our little family. I have found a really amazing thing about having a young son. He's going to see what I do a lot more than he'll hear what I say. So, I have to be an example and not just a talking head. Which means if I ever want to tell me son to do something his father better be able to do it and demonstrate for him first. I've started this year by dropping 45 lbs and taking better care of myself. I attacked NaNo this year with much zeal and enthusiasm. I now need to decide the BFS thing that he will need to see his father do this year.

This year I'm going to: FIND A DIFFERENT, FULFILLING, ENGAGING, CAREER that taps my writing, my creativity and will earn us a comfortable living and show my son that you can live life on your terms and enjoy every day.

Talk about terrifying!

I've lived self help and personal motivation... well that is to say I've dumped so much of that into my head and have only let small peeks of it out in my own life. It's time to soar! And like The Doctor always says, "Be Amazing!" This year is my year to "Be Amazing" and by the time NaNoWriMo falls next year, maybe I'll even fly out to the night of writing dangerously or have one of my own in Toledo. Either way, 2012 is a big one me!

Time for my 2012 list. I’m sitting here feeling rather accomplished, considering I actually completed ten out of fourteen items on last year’s list.
Now, as for this year...

-Keep my high GPA
-Get another internship (Don’t know where.)
-Go to a writers’ conference (I hope I can get to RMFW again this year.)
-Try to sell some of my short stories (How did I not manage to even start on this last year? Dang education getting in the way.)
-Finish the final edits and query the 2010 NaNo (Almost there!)
-Finish writing the first draft and complete the second draft of the 2011 NaNo (Trying to have the first draft done by the end of December again, actually.)
-Meet some of the members of my online writing group in person (Please let this happen. The San Francisco trip will work out. It will!)
-Do something that helps society (Either start volunteering again or work on my own program or something.)
-Not go insane (Easy enough, right?)
-Keep losing weight (35 pounds in the last year, maybe 5 or 10 more to go. I just want to get down to a size 12).
-Write another first draft of a book between now and NaNo
-Submit this one poem I wrote to different places

Think that’s enough for now. I suppose we’ll see what happens. Hopefully, I’ll be as productive as I was this year!

-Keep writing! After NaNo 09, I fell right to a halt. This time around I want to write nearly every day. I know I can come up with plenty of ideas when I look for them.
-Along the same lines, I'm going to practice my violin more often.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

My BFS List consists of two things, but both of them a big goals (with lots of little subgoals), so I figure it still counts as 'Big':

1. I'm relaunching my home-business-on-the-side as of January 1st, 2012. I will be selling customized model horses and writing and artwork and whatever else tickles my fancy and brings in the moola. I would like to earn enough by the end of the year to pay my Evil Student Loans™ from the profits. $510 a month net has never looked so insurmountable. &gt;.&lt;;;

2. I'm going to lose 60 pounds. With 52 weeks and 1.153 pounds a week, this should be a doable goal. I've never really tried before, so it will be interesting to see what combination of exercise and diet will do the trick.

Of course both of these have subgoals:

#1 includes improving my skills in the various creative endeavors as well as all the fun marketing and paperwork that comes with running a small business. (I've done it before, so at least the learning curve won't be as steep!)

#2 includes leaning what to eat, how to cook, various forms of 'get up and move' and figuring out how all of it fits into my life. It's a bit harder since I'm aiming for permanent changes and not temporary ones.

It should be a fun, scary adventure and just like NaNo, I'll keep blogging through the chaos. If all else fails, I can always serve as a bad example! *grin*

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
<a href="http://www.martha.net/online-novels/in-progress/in-dreams-of-trees/" rel="nofollow">In Dreams of Trees</a> - 2011 NaNo Novel!
<a href="http://www.Martha.net" rel="nofollow">Martha.net</a> - Writing, Model Horses, and Warcraft... because you can never have enough hobbies.

-Work really feckin' hard and ace my A Levels and get into medical school and Be Awesome

-Finish, edit, beta (well, I won't be beta'ing, but you know what I mean), and upload my novel.

-Write the SEQUEL (omg I know right)

-Type up all the ficlets, scenes, short stories and miscellaneous handwritten crap I have written up. See if I can make that mess into some actual finished stories

And writing-wise, this is the big one:
-Upload and advertise my short stories and, if there is positive feedback, make a website and set myself up doing commissions.
I am hoping that this will be easier than it sounds because the market I'm trying to break into is extremely niche, largely flooded with crap, and there are a handful of people already doing commissioned stuff who seem to get decent business and rates.

SO, we shall seeee. Mostly I just want to get into med school, move forward with my life and get out some of the stories that constantly build up inside me.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Every other year, I've made some really huge list and not got any of it done. So this year, a smaller list.

- Finish my 2011 NaNo novel. Work got in the way this year. I love my characters, and I love my idea. I don't want it to go into the box of unwritten items

- Read more books. I'm pushing 53 books for this year, so maybe 60 books.

-De-clutter, and toss out s*** I don't need.

-Go through the humongous "library" of books sitting in every free space in my apartment. Really take a look at them and decide if I will ever read them or not. Then possibly put them up online to sell. They'll need a good home.

-Script Frenzy. I've got an idea. I just need to execute it.

That's all for now. I'm sure as 2012 progresses I'll either add to this, or replace items that I've completed.

So, my New Year's resolution for last year was to finish a book. I've finished two (three when I finish my NaNo by the end of the month). So, for next year, I'm going to be optimistic and say I'd like to get at least one book ready to query. Doesn't sound so scary unless I list out the steps (rewrites, edits, beta readers, finding beta readers). EEK!

Non writing goals
1. Get pregnant and have another kid
2. Run a half marathon and, if training goes well, maybe a full [note: conflicts with #1]
3. Improve my roller derby skills to become a super jammer OR help to coach a team [depending on #1]

Writing goals
4. Revise my best novel for publication; try to sell it. (work already in progress)
5. Participate in Story-a-day May (one short story every day). Attempt to sell several stories. Research markets beforehand to make this goal more possible (for example, they may have to lean heavily toward SF)
6. Participate in Camp NaNoWriMo
7. Spend a full month planning my next novel before I write it (this goes for Camp as well as regular NaNo).
8. Return to writing non-fiction for pay - this used to be a good chunk of my income but got pushed aside by teaching.

- Write the sequel to the previous novel

Non-Writing Goals:
- Get into the Disney College Program (I got rejected again earlier today, but I'm fighting so hard to get in again! :D)
- Improve my drawing/create a better portfolio
- Become more outgoing/less shy and more independent

- Learn guitar or relearn violin (or both!)
- Start doing parkour

Yeah, lots of stuff. xD But it actually sounds really fun to do it all!

I have three major goals this year. Hopefully, by using the monthly threads, I can break it down into manageable chunks.

1) Lose 40 lbs.

2) Publish three short stories.

3) Keep the house clean.

Seems simple enough, but there's a lot of work involved for each, so I'm crossing my fingers, buckling down, and doing my best to achieve my goals for this year.

Well I have a few. most of them are for stories..

- Getting this NaNo Novel finished (Yes I can! no doubt about it ^^)

-Getting the things ready for my next NaNo(wether it's going to be Camp NaNo July/August or NaNovember I'm not sure yet, I tried to finish the things for my Fantasy world which went wrong somewhere since I started to write on a Stargate SG1/Stargate Atlantis story instead of the original idea)

- Getting some other stories done (I have like waaaay to many stories to finish which I did started, but failed to end)

- And REALLY trying to finish the third year of being a first year(three different sorts of educations, the first was somethign with events, the second one was trying to be a secretary for directors of businesses and the third... is a security officer xD)

- And lose some weight.

Should be easy to do. I hope. xD

In order of scary/funness:
1. Go to college
2. IB tests in May (5 of them)
3. Finish my NaNo novel
4. Free time. I believe free time is defined as time in which there is nothing that has to be done, such as homework or chores. Or writing novels. Usually this time is enjoyable. I want some
5. clean my room
5a. keep it clean

1. Learn to drive and get my license.

3. Learn to use a laundromat.
And some that aren't related to college:
1. learn to play guitar. Or piano, but preferably guitar.
2. Get SCUBA-certified
2a. Go to Florida and live on a boat for two weeks, SCUBA diving.

I want to go to Comic Con and visit with my sweet godmother.
I want to start my own business because I'm sick of being a college graduate without that mythical career I was promised I'd have when I graduated college school as I grew up.
I need to read books more. I used to read like crazy when I was in middle and high school. But then the workload in late high school and college wiped me out when it came to reading for fun. Now I struggle for words, and I have a hard time describing things.

I only have two BFS Goals this year: 1) To get at least a third of my Mission 101 goals completed.

Which of them will count toward this I haven't fully decided yet but I'm certainly aiming to have all the Job ones completed, all of the Diet and Fitness ones at least started and at least a third of the Creative ones completed. The Travel ones I'd like to make a start on and the Tech ones I'd like to start if not complete but the first three categories are the ones I'm aiming for. The last two Categories will just be an added bonus.

I'll update this with a link when I post my Mission 101 goal list to the LiveJournal community (and to the Day Zero project website) at the beginning of next month.

And 2) I'm aiming for a 200k word goal again too which will help toward the Creative ones.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Here's my list; I intend to start strong:

- Finish and edit my NaNo novel enough to have someone else read it by January 31st!
I've been challenged by a fellow NaNo participant and am actually very pleased with the idea of having another deadline to meet.

- After that first someone else has read the novel, I will edit it some more and hopefully feel ready to send it to a publishing house or two (you can still do that in Norway, without getting an agent first).

- Let my husband read my novel. Not looking forward to this as I have killed off someone who has all my husband's worst sides. Not sure how he will react to this.

- Work some more on (and hopefully finish) another novel I have been "working on" for years and try to get it published.

- Take at least one trip abroad. It's been way too long.

- Get a raise! I have never actually gone and asked for a raise before.

- I will do the obvious new year resolution things like working out and losing weight and all that crap too, of course, but will not let them get me off track with my newly rediscovered love of writing :)

OK, I believe that's it for now, so as not to scare myself TOO much...

Finish and self-publish one of my novels (a sequel to others I've also published through Create Space).

Submit and (hopefully) find a publisher for some of my other novels, including this year's NaNo.

<a href="http://rowanfaesblog.blogspot.com/2011/11/short-story-challenge.html" rel="nofollow">Write 50 stories</a>, from titles (I'm stealing all the Adoptable Titles, and putting them into a list, and will figure out some way to choose between them before 1/1/12), self- or indie-publish them and put them up on my blog, In Addition to my other writing (Including NaNo12, and possibly Screnzy ... ).
You can <a href="http://rowanfaesblog.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">follow my progress</a> with this goal ...

Pay off my debt. Not fun, but essential for the next goal:

Work towards writing full-time (which means quitting my job, eventually, and I'd really like to be debt-free before I do that). I will start by self-publishing stories (and I'll continue to send some of them to magazines), and if I can make a little money, so much the better.

Finish unpacking all the boxes in "The Attic" (which ought to be the office, or perhaps the guest room)--we've only been living here 15+ months! (This is the least goal-like of them all: the stuff in the office is mostly my husband's, and all of it needs to be assessed for garbage status, which I cannot do by myself--which is the main reason the office is still as crowded as it is. So I guess the goal is to make a concerted effort to use our weekends for box-opening.)

I'll start talking about all of this on <a href="http://rowanfaesblog.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">my blog</a>, so feel free to check it out.

Last year I made my own thread to post my own version of "The Year of Doing Big, Fun, Scary Things Together" but dropped it down just after two months. So this year I think I'll put mine here without having to be much too committed to update :D

Anyway, my main focus of BFST this time is, LOSING WEIGHT! Yes, I join the thread also but I also put the post here. My target is losing 1 kg for each month and by the time next year I'll get my ideal weight without, hopefully, having drawback of gaining weight at the end. Of course if I can knock it in two weeks, it'd be awesome, but I'm not that optimistic.

- Become a blogging Goddess. I have only 2,000 readers a month. I want at least 10,000!
      * Go from 500 blog twitter follows to 2,000
      * Start a blog facebook Page
      * Do at least 4 reviews a Month
      * Do at least 2 giveaways a Month.
      * Keep posting near Daily

- Get a better camera!
       * Keep taking photos for blog. For my family.

- Body.... oh hell NO. I am done being focused on that. I am not huge but I am sick. The Drs don't know why yet, and trying to lose weight is near impossible with my conditions. My husband adores me and I am still in love with him after 13 years. This year, I am NOT going to worry about that. This year is about my bigger ambitions. I thought I had to wait till our children are grown to write. I was wrong. I can do it now. Now is all I have. Some things I can fix, and some things I can't. I can fix my fear of failing at my writing dreams by just doing it!

- Get another breeding pair of Gliders. I love my pair but I want a rare pair with another huge cage and take the time to train them wonderfully, but wow is this going to cost dearly.... I will do it!

- Make sure I get another vacation with my husband this summer. It helped remind us we are not old yet!

- Overcome the Trauma.

- Feel confident and self reliant again and rock single parenting and home upkeep during husbands deployment time.

- Get another working sewing machine (or get my two busted ones repaired!) and make cage sets that make me smile and either sell or donate some! I miss sewing, and need to admit it.

- Don't promise I will cook more. I am not going to. I hate it. No more promises about things I know I hate when there are others around that don't hate it and are good at it. I don't have to do it all anymore, I need to stop getting upset with self for not being "that" housewife.

- Rock 2012 NaNo with some great people. "sprites" is right, thats a given!

- So close to debt free, hit the credit reports and find every little thing that can be fixed and then start building good credit up as high as possible. Use all raises this year to do so!

- Embrace the insanity that comes with creativity. Being weird isn't bad, it isn't something to hide. Be brave! If my son(6) can wear a dress to his older sisters (12) sleep over with her friends and a lot of other times, I can be myself too, the girl that does not wear dresses, sits on her hair, hates cooking and loves helping the children paint on the walls! I am a grown woman who has black walls and burgundy bed sheets and loves it. I don't need to close my door every time company comes over to hide that I am... odd. Yes, I will Embrace the insanity that the sheeple don't get. I am THAT girl and happy.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Non-Writing Goals:
-have a good wedding and marriage. Believe it or not, at the age of 56 I'm getting married for the first time in January, to my partner of 19 years.
-devote more attention to my spiritual life. I am blessed to be able to have a religious wedding, as I wanted, so realise how important it is to me.
-sort out my job/financial situation. How, exactly, I don't know, considering my lack of qualificatiions and lack of money to support me training or studying. And considering my job is very poorly paid, and due to cuts in care service--the field I work in--prospects are getting worse. My fiance does similar low-paid work so can't help. I'm barely earning a living right now, so something has to change.
-keep up my hiking and try to swim more. Would like to lose a little weight but will try not to obsess, and prioritise fitness and enjoyment.
-try and work on friendships, new and old. But as I've never been good at making or keeping friends, I might drop this one and decide to remain a social recluse.
-visit Copenhagen with my husband-to-be. A dream of mine since watching a brilliant Danish TV series. But due to money problems as above, this will probably have to remain a dream for a while.

Writing Goals:
-revise this year's (my first) Nano novel. Very scary, as I haven't looked at it since finishing early (took me less than 3 weeks of obsessive writing), and dread to think it may look terrible to me now.
-work on other writing. Have done nothing since Nano, due to ill health and other preoccupations, but hope to start with a vengeance in the New Year, though it may have to take a back seat until the wedding in late January. Will continue to write short stories, enter them in competitions run by writing magazines--maybe other competitions too. Will plan and start writing another novel. And of course, enter Nano again next November.
-aim to get something published within 2012. Short stories at least, perhaps my revised Nano novel. As one poster rightly pointed out, we have no control over whether anyone will want to publish our work, but I can aim to send out my work.
-working towards above writing goals to make more possible and bring closer my ultimate goal, which is to write for a living. As the powers that be are raising the retirement age here in Britain, as well as making life harder generally for the poor, and as I won't be getting much of a pension anyway and will probably have to work until I'm ancient, I would rather be working at something I enjoy.

Is it just my imagination, or are y'all a bunch of uber-achievers???

Oh well...here's my list so far, worded so as to be not-too-terrifying:

* Finish (as in revise/edit/polish) my NaNoWriMo 2011 novel, You Are Loved.
* Find a literary agent for YAL.
* Send some short stories out to magazines.
* Make October my own private StADMo (Story-A-Day Month). This worked out pretty well in 2011.
* Do NaNoWriMo 2012.
* Keep learning Japanese.
* Visit Japan.
* Make some visual art.
* Do some yoga.
* Do some meditation.

Okay, here's my list:

0. Get a more stable job or at least turn what I’m doing now into a stable business.
1. Rewrite the first 2010 NaNo.
2. Do some kind of physical activity every day. (I’ve been doing well on this so far, believe it or not.)
3. Launch the first Wikiwrimo Writing Month (February!). I’m writing the page for this right now. (Update since I posted this on my site: I have written the page for this. Yay!)
4. Be more social outside of NaNo. This may mean (gasp) interacting with non-Wrimos.
5. Get my finances straightened out.
6. Do Wikiwrimowrimo, NaNoEdMo, Script Frenzy, Three-Day Novel Contest, and NaNoWriMo. Maybe I’ll do a Camp NaNoWriMo session too if I come up with a plot. (Holy balls, my late winter/early spring is going to be ridiculous.)
7. Go on a date. Note that I said go on a date, not get in a relationship. I am perfectly okay with this one date goal.
8. Learn to cook better.
9. Install that home server. Also, if I do get a new laptop, finish The Longest Journey and install Linux From Scratch on the old one. Because I can. :D
10. Read 25 books I haven’t read before.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Here it is, my BFS 2012 list! I'll be keeping track of my goals both here and at my blog,
<a href="http://readingeverypage.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow">Reading Every Page</a>.

1)	halve credit card debt. Definitely big, definitely scary, definitely a relief. This will likely - hopefully - be completed by getting a better job come spring, which will likely be completed by passing additional tests to be certified to teach additional subjects. I'm already signed up for 4 more tests between now and March...

2)	exercise at least 3x a week. Self-explanatory.

3)	study Arabic at least 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. It really should be quite a bit more, but that's the bare minimum, and I'm not even managing to do that these days.

4)	eat like I did in France 4 times a week. This means no chemicals, no preservatives, and limited sugar and salt. Basically, fresh, quality ingredients prepared very simply and with little fuss, and a lot of homemade from-scratch cooking.

5)	Save at least $520 towards travels. $10 a week. Too low of a total to do really much of anything at all, honestly, but considering my financial situation, hopefully a fairly painless goal that'll still get me further than nothing.

6)	completely re-write, edit, and submit Behind Enemy Lines (my 2007 NaNo novel!)

7)	Read at least 52 books and document them. 52 = 1 book a week. Documentation = so I can remember them all.

8)	make a quilt. Because I like quilts.

9)	knit something besides a scarf. I'm thinking a blanket, or a shawl, or maybe, if I'm feeling really ambitious, a sweater. I kinda really doubt that last one, but it sounds cozy!

10)	beat Assassin’s Creed! I have a bad habit of starting video games and then leaving them halfway through, and my dad bought me the brand new game in the series (#4) for Christmas. I haven't even beat the first one yet!

- Finish NaNo novel. I actually still like it, even after those thirty days, so I feel like that gives it the right to be finished.

- Do NaNoEdMo plus other editing, so that novel will actually be readable to people who aren't me. And then do some more editing. And some more. Fun, fun, fun.

- Do Camp NaNoWriMo in either June or August (or both, but I make no promises).

- Win NaNoWriMo again. This is my first year winning, so I'd like to make that a habit.

- Do some volunteering.

- Get a job. I graduate from university this summer, which is terribly scary and means I have to figure out my future, at least a little bit.

- Start and maintain a blog.

- Get more involved in activism.

- Find suitable male companion.

For a vaguer goal, I'd like to have an actually good year in 2012. 2011 wasn't terrible, exactly, but it was kind of meh and I'm tired of meh. So here's to having an awesome year!

- Really stick to writing every day (oops, better get something down today, then)

- Expand and edit this first time NaNo creature.

- Find out if it is at all worth trying to get it published.

- Continue to find ways of living on next to nothing.

- Find ways to pay for pets, who have decided they don't want to live on next to nothing.

- Find LOTS of ways to show my wife how much I appreciate how she has made all this possible.

-SCRENZY - I will make one of my two plot ideas stick this year!

-Start talks of the future with the boyfriend (needing more of a commitment to a forever type of situation - at least engaged to be engaged would work with me)

-Get my license - NEEDED DESPERATELY - I'm sick of walking everywhere...

-Get back to school

so far that's about it...I've got a few minor, not so scary things, but these are the biggies...

Re: Your BFS Lists!

1) Spend less time in Nano forums (done!)

2) Write every day until I am in the habit of completing editable drafts at the rate of several per year.

3) Get completed work onto Smashwords, so they can become extremely cheap on Amazon and I can learn how that type of marketing/sales-feedback loop works, thus getting better and more marketable over time.

And that's it!

I realized that a lot of what I considered "goals" are just ordinary everyday disciplines (now that I'm better at them) that have to be gotten out of the way efficiently in order to clear the table for the bigger, scarier, funner stuff, like writing.

It used to be a goal to be fit, but now I AM fit so it's now moved from the category of big and scary and fun to boring everyday routine...yet to retain the benefits I still have to show up for it! (Full disclosure, I haven't lost significant amount of pounds OR INCHES during my year of fitness focus...but I am much stronger and more energetic. Its amazing that you can stay 30 pounds overweight while training for and completing a half-marathon but there it is. Maybe at some point my muscles will reach "critical mass" and start burning fat faster; in the meantime I'm content that somewhere under my beanbag shape, my abs are stellar! I'm fifty now, but I see myself in the future: "When I am 60, I will wear (a purple bikini) and a red hat..."

I had a lot of success in 2011 with learning to be a better administrator. I still have a lot to learn in this area, but I'm no longer afraid of going toe-to-toe with state and federal offices. Those of you who remember last year's medical drama with my mom: I'm in the third round of appeals for her expenses to be reimbursed by Medicare. I have learned of a volunteer organization called SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) so we may be gearing up for round four. But again, I have to make the transition away from focusing on this stuff, to just getting it done and out of my hair like the lice-nest it is.

I've crept slowly up the list in the University of Illinois' civil service job application process to position number 10. I've applied to take a second exam that might bump me up the list a teeny bit higher with a better score. I haven't had time to pursue other jobs than that, but I have been given a tiny merit raise and extra hours at my part-time job at the Y, and I now qualify for retirement benefits. Not that any of that helps us pay for cost increases NOW, and we are slowly creeping back into debt. We are basically exploiting the utility companies for low-cost, short-term loans by not paying our bills on time.

Nevertheless, we are generous with the money we do have, and I made my first platelet donation in several years last month! Now that my health is so improved, I feel confident that my vital juices can once again help sick people to recover.

Audiobooks have changed my life and mental health over the last year, to an astonishing degree! I have learned that a lot of my stress and anxiety, and insomnia, result in part from being too smart and having too active a mind for most of the daily demands I MUST--no room to negotiate--MEET. Having constant audiobooks streaming through the unoccupied parts of my brain, even while I'm "asleep", has helped me enormously. I never have insomnia with a book in my ear. I can listen to the same one several times, so I don't miss anything if I sleep through it. If I'm using a book to sleep to, I have to choose my subject carefully. No crime drama. But the Bible, the Tao Te Ching, cozy mysteries if I like the reader and know the ending...I have slept really well for three or four months since I discovered this trick. I just have to remember to turn it off and take the buds off when I am TALKING to people. But I'm rarely bored, and rarely anxious, and super productive. One of the reasons I used to quit tasks early was intense boredom, but I didn't realize that. I thought I was being lazy. BTW, I get all these downloads legally and for free from MyMediaMall, with my library card.

I will post updates, but rarely. I miss all the BFS regulars. :-) I wish you all well, and all you new folks, too!

Re: Your BFS Lists!

This will definitely be an up and down year, but I'm counting on it being good overall. :)

1~Finish editing and prepping Nano novel for publishing [target release date: sometime in February]

2~Find assistance to ensure mortgage is paid during transition [preferably before I absolutely must have it]

3~Put together a lease agreement and find a roommate [Probably about mid-Feb with move-in in March or maybe a little later]

4~Get tutoring service rolling to gain experience and improve the local community [throughout the year]

5~Write no less than two articles a week for HubPages [starting after release of Nano novel]

6~Start a new book (non-fiction this time) [as soon as inspiration hits]

7~Work on compiling poetry for publishing a collection [while waiting on #6]

8~Put together small classes/workshops for local group [February-Marchish timeframe... maybe]

9~Exercise regularly [more often than last year an acceptable goal XD]

10~Win Nanowrimo 2012 in November

11~Redo front and backyard landscaping to annoy local code enforcers (actually, I just want trees, a firepit, and garden, but they have some very OCD idea of what landscaping consists of despite so many other options being within the codes) [during summer months]

12~Take time to be creative (aside from writing :P) [any chance I get]

13~Spend more time doing things away from home with the dogs [anytime the weather permits]

I could put in all kinds of other goals that involve making money and the like, but I'm fairly certain financial needs will be met so long as I remain true to myself and have faith. I felt less financially secure when I had a steady paycheck making considerably more money and had no time for my animals, dreams, spirituality, and friends. This list here should take care of all the real needs.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Okay, so I`m a little late, but who cares? Here we go:

Writing:
- finish my writing room (a mix of office and living room, complete with corkboard wall for plotting)
- write AT LEAST 500 words each day (I made a table in WordExcel to enter daily wordcounts and so far I`ve stuck to it)
- translate my best friend`s fanfiction from German into English. It has to be finished by Christmas.
- start working on my crime novels, my trilogy and a historical.
- do NaNoWriMo 2012 and possibly also CampNaNoWriMo

Life:
- convince my best male friend that he`s madly in love with me. Oh boy.
- spend more time outside this summer
- go inline skating more often
- spend more time with my friends and family
- volunteer at local animal shelter
- start learning how to play the piano
- read more books
- meet Irish author Derek Landy again and remind him of how I hit him over the head with a (clean) toilet brush at a book fair (that was hilarious!)
- get summer job or part-time job (basically: EARN MONEY)
- start planning a trip to London (and New York, which is why I need the money)
- find perfect couch for my writing room.

School:
- get better at Spanish. That might be possible if I developed an interest in the language. Chances: 0%
- try to understand German, British and American politics
- keep my A in Translation Englisch-&gt;German and vice versa.
- do not hit idiot classmates over the head with a heavy object (like a dictionary). So far, I`ve been restraining myself, but I might crack soon.

Looks like this list is longer than I first thought it would be. Oops...?
I guess I´ve got my work cut out for me.

My big, fun, scary goals...

1. Revise this year's NaNo novel.
2. Submit said novel by the end of the year.
3. Write my steampunk novel (the one I started during Camp NaNoWriMo last year, but didn't finish)
4. Build my author website/blog.
5. Travel to at least one place I've never visited before.

I have some less big &amp; scary goals, too. But these are the big ones. I can't wait to see what the year brings!

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Wow. So many.

1) Give up on 'Stay With Me' and work out a new plot for it. Seriously, the 14k I wrote in November sucked so bad.
2) RP more with LozzT-In-Time, my sister and Ashleigh. Possibly their friend Jade. POSSIBLY.
3) Finish my second year at college and decide on what degree I want to take at Uni
4) Do some songwriting, or maybe record for LozzT-In-Time. Or with her. Either way...
5) Read more books. Like, seriously.
6) Get the purple dye out of my hair. I hate it when I accidentally buy permanent hair dye instead of semi-permanent. And then...
7) ... dye it my natural red again. Okay, maybe a little more 'Hayley Williams' than my original hair colour, but still.

Lol, there are so many! I hope this helps me actually finish this.

1) Actually finish my Nano from this year.
2) Learn to play the guitar, at least to the point where I know more chords than I do now.
3) Choreograph a dance to the ten songs on my list.
4) Get up the courage to find an advisor and declare my major.
5) Also read more books. I have a stack yet to read!

Okay, this is, um, scary--which is the point, of course. Dipping toe into water...

-Finish first draft of screenplay with my super fantastic writing partner, Laura Albert (hey, I can do that during Script Frenzy!!)

-Finish collection of 100 100-word stories and pitch to publishing big shots (or small shots, if need be)

-Use willpower more effectively to keep the front lawn from dying. Same for car repairs.

-Reach out to "prominent" authors to publish on www.100wordstory.org so that we can pitch a collection to publishing big shots (agent told me we need the "prominent" ones to publish the other ones...definition of "prominent"?)

-Practice alchemy in preparation for next recession--and for all OLL fundraising drives, of course!

-Somehow find a way to create a "writing retreat" to revise a novel that's been shackled to me for eight years and needs to be pitched somewhere, perhaps in the garbage

-Practice the guitar so that I'm not wasting money paying my guitar teacher to watch me practice each week

-Treat customer service people like royalty

-More prank phone calls...(kidding)

-Restrain list making and live for the moment.

-Finish and revise (at least once) the novel begun in March...it's a long one, this might take the rest of the year, easily
-Do something somewhat dangerous that I've never done before, like ice fishing or getting onto the roof to watch the stars
-Make a significant dent in my "books I have not yet read" case. It's not a shelf, it is a whole case, and it is getting out of hand.
-Get married...a lot of my wedding will be DIY, so there's another year-long project
Explore all the hiking trails in the nature park near my house. There are half a dozen of them, and they are quite steeply uphill, and any two of them are about four miles long. My aim is to not feel like dying by the time I get to the top.
-Keep my writing group alive, and hopefully add at least one more member

Whooo...this is going to be hard. Fun, but hard.

My list for the rest of this year (in no particular order):

- Win Screnzy and complete the script to the end rather than just leaving it half-done.

- Complete my current creative writing course.

- Work on my Old English course every day and finish it.

- Work through my Irish for Beginners and/or Welsh for Beginners books, but I must only do one at a time so I can concentrate on it properly, not have several on the go at the same time and get into a muddle like I normally do.

- Write at least 500 words per day outside of SF and NaNos

- Take part in and hopefully win both sessions of Camp NaNo 2012 as well as regular NaNo in November.

- Start my Open University degree in October. I'm really nervous about this as I've been out of education for several years now and I'm hoping I don't mess it all up.

- Read all of the books on the "to-read" shelf of my bookcase by the end of the year.

- Learn to cook properly. I've never really learnt much in the way of cooking skills and at 27, that's a bit embarrassing.

- Try and find a job.

- Try and find a boyfriend. That would be nice, but I'm not going to hold my breath...

I still got a looooooong way to go for that one.

5. DO GREAT WHEN I PRESENT MY RESEARCH THIS OCTOBER + PUBLISH A CYENTIFIC ARTICLE

6. GET A TATTOO.

Re: Your BFS Lists!

Just a suggestion regarding the nature of goals:
Unless you are considering self- or indie-publishing, which it doesn't sound like you are, <em>selling</em> stories isn't something you can control (and even with indie publishing, you can only control the publishing part, not the selling part).
You can only control how many stories you write and how quickly you send them out again once they come back. For a more realistic goal, I suggest something along the lines of "write x-number of stories this year/each month/etc., and never keep a story that's ready to go out for more than a week".
I had selling a story as a goal this year ... I've gotten a lot more rejection slips. Now this coming year, my goal is all about writing and getting it out there.

All awesome, especially number 3! Good luck with the prom dress.

...and for some reason, when I read number 8, I misread it like you meant buying the company that makes the product and thought "whoa, that is ambitious." LOL

Even as a person who never wants to write a thesis, and is far from getting married, this makes me go "awwwww." Because the concept of NaNo changing how you look at life is one I'd never thought of. It's fantastic.

[quote=Yasaibatake]10)	beat Assassin’s Creed! I have a bad habit of starting video games and then leaving them halfway through, and my dad bought me the brand new game in the series (#4) for Christmas. I haven't even beat the first one yet!
[/quote]
I am the exact same way about leaving video games halfway through. I've been playing The Longest Journey since... 2008? 2009? Whatever the case, it's far too long. I've also been playing Pokemon Diamond for almost a year, almost as long as I've known one of my good friends. It's probably about time to finish one of those, especially since I have Portal waiting...

Ice fishing!! Lots of fun and not all that dangerous...well, not if the ice is good. Check with a local. Do what I do, go with a bunch of people, then if the ice cracks, you won't die alone.

Good luck with all of these!
