I've been dieting since July 13 and I've lost about 35 pounds. This is great, but NaNo and the holiday season have brought my diet to a halt lately. I'm hoping to lose another 20-30 pounds so that I can get out of this overweight range.
Anyone want to come with me?
My method so far has been fairly simple. I count my calories (1200-1550 calories a day) and I get at least 20 minutes of exercise every day. I've been doing some low impact aerobics DVDs - Sweatin' to the Oldies and Walk Away the Pounds are two of my favorites. Despite the simple method, it's been a tough battle, but one I'm looking forward to winning.
I can't be the only NaNoer out there hoping to lose some weight.
Sorry, but I really just had to stop and squee over Sweatin' to the Oldies. I just did the third one this morning to help get myself back on some kind of semi-healthy track. :)
Oh dear... I empathize! I lost 20 pounds since the spring of 2011, 40 to go to get out of the "overweight" BMI range... actually, I think I'm still straddling obese... grrr... but then November hits and I drop everything in favour of Nano'ing... then December and all good intentions festively fly out the window --- and boom... here were are in January and I have gained back 7 pounds and have an unfinished draft sitting on my hard drive.
Time to make some resolutions! :)
Good luck with your journey and congratulations on your success thus far!
Awesome! I've recently become a vegetarian and my goal is to lose 67 pounds. I've done the math and if I lose 2 pounds a week, I should lose it within 8 months although I'm giving it 10 months to a year just to be safe. Don't want to lose too fast. Hopefully being a vegetarian will help. I've never felt better in my entire life!
I want to lose about 25 pounds before summer, and work towards my yoga instructor license. My method: balanced, organic diet with foods listed for my blood type in "Eat Right 4 Your Type," and go on at least a 5k bike ride on every day possible. I'm also dealing with hypothyroidism, which saps your energy and often causes weight gain (as in my case), so that's inconvenient - but I can push past it. I also do irregular but frequent yoga.
Trust me, you are not alone in this. I am going to wait until after the holidays to go strict. You only live once!
I don't have the self discipline (or patience) to count calories. Before I had my *ahem, now 7 year old* son, I had lost a lot of weight simply by sticking to an exercise routine, and making my diet mostly vegetarian. My meat sources were chicken or turkey breat and lean fish. And it worked. I had lost 40 pounds give or take. But then I got pregnant, and I had to properly nourish my body for the baby. And since then, well, I haven't been able to get back to it. It really doesn't help that my hubby has horrible eating habits, and the man loves his steak and ice cream and junk food.
I an going to do it. I'm sick of feeling so tired, having trouble fitting clothes correctly due to where I carry the extra weight, and really I would be very happy if I could lose a bra size in the process. Hubby probably would not be as happy about it, but he doesn't have to lug them around. My back can't take it any more.
So, here's my thought: A supportive community gives a person the motivation to achieve greatness. A novel in 30 days, it happens. So why not apply the same principle to weight loss? A supportive community might be just the thing someone out there needs to be able to take the weight off. A burden is always heavier when you carry it alone. A burden, when shared by many, seems a whole lot lighter. Sorry, still in rambling NaNo mode.
I am bit by bit changing my diet. I have a toddler and I want him to learn to like yummy healthy foods, so I am learning to cook. I cook a meal every day for him with veggies and lean protein. Exercise is more difficult. I keep trying...
I'm in for weight loss in the new year. My aim is 4 stone over the year (56lbs). I've also got some other health-related goals that should help, including a month without alcohol, going vegan for a month (I'm vegetarian) and increasing my exercise.
@stephensdemise - awesome to see you again, again!
Glad you started this dianne_the_geek! I thought I was the only one struggling with late night NNWO sugar and caffeine binges...!! I've been doing WW (again) online for a little over a year, and before Oct started (ML prep, Halloween, cutting my gym membership) on my WW year anniversary had lost 17 lbs. Post NNWM, I'm up about 4 or 5 lbs. But cutting back down to a normal level of caffeine, drinking water, exercise and sleep should put me back on track.
I started up again last year because I gained alot with my 4th child (now 4 y.o.). I had excellent success losing 30 lbs after my son (now 13) was born and when I first joined WW back then, he was probably about 3 years old. It's slower now my body's 10 years older, but if I don't do anything, I'll just see the weight creep up. When I did it 10 years ago, I went to meetings, and my only exercise was walking our dog! Very easy to drop the weight back then.
My DH is very thin, has a ridiculously fast metabolism and eats everything, all the time. Very meat and potatoes. I'm a very salad/fruit/fish person oh, yeah, and chocolate. But chocolate's a trigger for me, so I really need to watch it.
Good luck to everyone who is looking to lose (and win).
I lost weight, gained it back, and again. I don't have the patience for calorie counting either. I lost a good bit of weight by exercising and watching what I ate, and I lost...oh gee almost 30 pounds two or three years ago. I gained it all back plus 5. To be at a "healthy" weight, I need to drop at least 60 pounds now. But I'm sure we can all do it.
Me, too! I've done well in the past, but had surgery twice since 2008 and wasn't able to exercise while I was healing. It also doesn't help that eating was the only thing to look forward to ...
Ideally, I would like to lose 40 pounds. Realistically, I would like to lose at least ten and then aim for 20. I plan to eat less junk, more veggies and fruit, and get more exercise. I'll start by working up to walking 10,000 steps every day. I own three different pedometers (somewhere or other), so I have no excuse!
I have needed to lose weight for a few years, but I've spent 6 months working 10 hour days at work and being forced to eat almost exclusively fast food because I just do not have time for anything else...and needless to say my waistline has shown the strain too. So, starting now, I am on a new weight loss plan. Here is the plan.....eat less and move my butt more! Simple and yet makes sense lol
I started on a no-carbohydrates-at-all diet today. Tonight's dinner made me think of Wallace and Gromit: "Mmmm...Wensleydale!" It's not a healthy way to lose a lot of weight, but I'm just lookin' to lose my NaNo pounds. Amazing how fast the pounds pack on when you take an "all rules are off" approach to eating during NaNo!
I did discover one useful thing, though, during my junk food fling: the higher the cocoa content of the dark chocolate, the less likely I am to gobble the whole bar without thinking about it. Up around 70% is ideal, for me at least: I eat it one little square at a time, and am happy to do so. =smile=
Ah, this thread probably has become my most favorite now :) Last year my resolute for 5 kg weight loss had went off to drainage, quite literally. Long working hours and sudden dinner trips, including diminishing lack of motivation, just didn't make it for me, especially the last part. This time I'm planning to use different approach. The target is to lose 1 kg in a month, by eating less junk foods (tough part!), eating more fruits, less dinner as much as I can and get my body to move (toughest part!). It might sound silly, but I'm not the type to move a lot and hate to get out from house. It is easier for sitting down and writing novel for me, than exercising. So, when though I understand it in my head, it is hard for me to start and consistent working on it. Do anyone have any idea what kind of exercise which I can do without getting out from house, without equipment, easy to do and still contribute in losing weight?
Dance. I'm serious! Put your favorite music on, something with a tasty beat, and move! I will wait until my SO has left for work, but I leave later than he does, so I plan to spend at least 15-20 minutes every morning, dancing my ass off. Literally.
If I manage to do that at least three or four times a week, it will add up.
There are also dance fitness videos, but I'm just going to improvise.
Totally with everyone here. :D my weight's been yo-yoing for a while now, and I want it to stop. I did want to lose some before the holidays, but now I'm not going to get too strict about that because I'll be running about anyway, and I know that all that rich, heavy food is going to undo my efforts anyway.
So new year weight loss here I come! I love dancing, so I always find this a good way to work towards losing weight. Admittedly, I only really want to drop a dress size (down to a UK size 12), so I can get into some of my old jeans, but my clothes will still fit me if and when I do it. So dance classes and morning jogs are the way I think I'm going to go. And doing away with all the junk food, definitely.
Since I've been at home all the time I know I've gained weight. I usually didn't eat when I was at college because I couldn't afford to (and wouldn't pay for it anyway, ridiculous prices), felt better off for it. But now I can eat whenever and really whatever. =/ not good.
I'm in. I lost 70 lbs in 2010, maintained in 2011 - which isn't bad but I wanted to lose - and have about another 40-50 to go. I'm using myfitnesspal.com (also an app for Android & iPhone) to track calories and record exercise. I'm weighing and measuring food too and it's wild the difference between what I think is a portion and what an actual portion is. But it works - I wanted a Starbucks peppermint hot cocoa & piece of coffee cake last night and input them into myfitnesspal and whoa....calories and waaaaaaaaaaaay too much sugar. I just couldn't do it.
I use the Android app for that, it worked really well for me for losing weight at a nice, healthy (but constant!) pace. Not only that, but I stopped using it during NaNo and I didn't put on any weight either, so it seems it may have helped to adjust some of my habits....
....but since it started snowing I may have to start using it again - you know the draw of comfort food in cold weather...
I've dropped something like 20 or 30 pounds since the beginning of the school year, because of the running-to-classes and no-time-for-lunch thing. But I've got another 20 to go before I hit my weight goal.
My method is the healthiest thing that I can come up with. I'll be eating very slowly, and stopping the moment I feel full to avoid overeating. And instead of predetermined exercise (which I don't have time for), I'm going to be working on turning every day activities into exercise--ie, doing my homework while standing up, taking multiple trips up the stairs when I could just take one, etc.
I'm not overweight, but would like to be in awesome shape for the wedding :D. I lost my excess 25 pounds of college weight by eating a big salad instead of mozzarella sticks for lunch, and exercising 30 minutes four times a week. I'm using some of those tricks again, trying to remember to eat fruit and cherry tomatoes instead of cookies, and get myself moving. I take Lindy Hop and belly dance classes and try to get to the gym twice a week (more often it's once, but it's a start!). I've put on a little lately, so my goal is to get down to 125 lb and get toned so I can be confident at a beach honeymoon.
I want to lose 20 pounds sometime before summer; I'm getting my boobs done in January (yay!), so it would be nice to get rid of the stomach flab to complete the whole picture. :) A couple months ago, my boyfriend and I decided to get in shape together, so we started exercising non-stop, running with the dogs, doing hundred of situps, eating no sugar and consuming tons of fruits and veggies. In six weeks, he lost 20 pounds. I gained 3. It was pretty disheartening, so I'm hoping that the added bonus of having boobs that are the same size, and don't flop like the nose of an anteater, will give me the necessary impetus! :D

AH, RICHARD SIMMONS! I used to do those videos with my mum when I was little. Listening to the '70s channel always makes me want to exercise. :)

70% chocolate is my go-to treat as well. So much more satisfying than a watered-down candy bar, and the smarter choice as well!
Re: Losing Weight
I know I've got to lose the weight I gained during Nano. Coffee shops are so tempting with those creamy frapps and tasty pastries!
