Script Frenzy, anyone?

So, I don't know much about writing scripts. I am going to do script frenzy, so I was wonderring if there was anyone here who hasdone it and can offer any advice?
Is it an equal challenge to nano? I know it is measured in pages, not words...

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

I've done Script Frenzy twice, and to be honest, it's way different than NaNo, but still tons of fun. Screnzy is a much smaller event than NaNo, at least where I live.

As an absolute commitment, I find 100 pages way easier than 50 000 words. The sheer length isn't as staggering... but you'd be amazed how long writing a few pages can take if you're not used to it, and therefore not too fast. I'd suggest writing something in script form before April, just so you know how you're going to format.

You might want to check out the Script Frenzy forums for more advice on transitioning from novelling... I think there was an epic thread, if not a whole forum, dedicated to... yep, just checked: "I Come From NaNoLand"

I am most likely doing Screnzy again this April. I didn't get to this year because I was just too busy and my laptop had died and... yeah. But this coming April, assuming I know what I want to write, I am doing a screenplay.

Gemma, if you want any questions answered or just want to talk to someone who has done screenplays in the past, feel free to shoot me a message. I haven't completed any, but I know how to do them and whatnot from my classes in university.

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

I did my first Script Frenzy in 2011, and it was much harder than I thought it would be. This challenge was also exacerbated by my exceptional procrastination skills in April, which led to me writing the whole script in 7 days, not 30.

But I agree with what others have said, it is very different to NaNoWriMo. It is enjoyable though, last year I tackled a movie script (and actually re-invented an old novel I had abandoned years ago, which was nice to see that story finally finished). This coming Frenzy I'll probably try a different kind of script, I think...

Having not won this year, I've decided (tentatively) to rework the stuff for ScriptFrenzy. I did look at the Script software a couple of years ago, but found it too complicated in the absence of a plot - or characters. I'm hoping that having both will make things go more smoothly this time.

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

I loved Script Frenzy when I did it last year!! :)
In my opinion, it is MUCH easier to win than NaNo. It really is. I just put my 103 word screenplay into a word counter, and it has 15,955 words. And I used a lot of description...more than probably is deemed acceptable by professionals xD. If I had limited myself to less of that and more dialogue, it probably would have been even less words!!
So, yeah. I definitely think you should try it!

I actually started with Script Frenzy and then moved to NaNo. I am an actor and writer (or at let that's what the papeer I got from uni says. ;) ) so SF was a great fit for me. I love it!

Someone mentioned learning the formatting for scripts and practicing it and that is absolutely vital to having a smooth and fun April. The second thing I would do is work on dialogue if it is at all challenging for you. Scripts are mostly dialogue with some description. So being able to crank out the dialogue without much thought is a great asset!

Hope to see you over there in April!

My best friend & I do role plays every evening. So we will definitely be taking part in Script Frenzy. The format really is pretty straight forward, you just need the character's name, some optional adjective for how they sound or what they're doing, & their dialogue. Then skip a line, rinse, repeat... or something like that.

You're best practice would be to do a role play with a friend on any IM platform. You'll be amazed how easy it is.

I fell in love with scripts at Uni as well, and I think it definitely helped loosen up my noveling dialogue. Before trying out screenplays, my dialogue in my prose was very forced and grinding- I think because I was afraid of sounding stupid. but with a script you only have to focus on showing how your characters are with how they speak. Great practice for novels!

I've written seven novels and one screenplay and my opinion echoes what several people here have already said: Scripts are generally easier. But get a copy of something like "The Hollywood Script Companion" (from the library is fine; I'm not shilling) and learn the rules first. It'll slow you down a lot if you have to learn as you go.

Celtx is an excellent formatting software, and free online. Good luck!

Thanks, everyone:)
So it sounds like Screnzy is easier if you know what your doing.
I looked at Celtx. The desktop version is free, but the ipad app (I use an ipad to write) is five dollars. Does anyone know of any free apps for that? I'm probably going to do a stage play...
I have been looking at all the writer's resources on the Screnzy website. The formatting is confusing, but I think I'll hapve it down before April :)
And Morgan101, I'll take a peek into that forum.
Thanks, all,

This year I didn't prep too well for NaNo, and as a result I have a massive editing job on my hands. I'm going to do lots of Screnzy prep, and hopefully make things easier on myself when it comes to April.

Formatting isn't too bad, you can use software to help if you want but I've been scripting in MS Word without any trouble. So long as you include all the relevant info, formatting can wait.

I'm definitely doing Script Frenzy again, and this time I won't have moving or anything else getting in my way! Last year I won by adapting my '10 NaNo into (5 episodes of) a TV series. That ended up changing my novel series forever: now I'm writing it as if it were a 5-season series.

This time I won't be anywhere near that ambitious. Not a TV series, not an ongoing comics series. Instead, I'll limit myself to one graphic novel. Or maybe not; I'm seriously tempted to do it as a visual novel instead...

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

I'm doing it again - last year I did it too, and won, but it was definitely a fun challenge. I'd never done any sort of script writing or even really seen much of a script but the kind that actors get for plays. I ended up spending the first two days trying to figure out what it was supposed to semi look like, and familiarizing myself with the terminology used for a comic: I did a series of six comic books.

I know that people say it doesn't matter what your formatting is, and you should just write, but it was definitely useful for me. Even though the end product might not be exactly how a "professional" comic writer would have, it was enough structure that I could organize my thoughts in some semblance of coherency. I didn't have any script writing program like Celtx or anything - I used Open Office writer, just like I do for my novels. I'm quite proud of the accomplishment, and now I feel much more comfortable with the beast that is a script. Good luck everyone!

I did "win" last year, although I am uncertain if I actually broke the rules or not. I started on a graphic novel script for a family/drama story then switch to a bunch of shorts about a sun-worshipping albino (taking from the prompt machine on the first page) after page 20 then jumped to another graphic novel about two girls for the last thirty or so pages.

This year I plan on writing a stage script and I have really two good ideas which I plan on outlining in March. I personally think a stage script will be easier (after figuring out how to divide up the acts and scenes).
I also have a back up plan if writer's block hit midway through April: write a parody script of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet.

I have written many nano novels, short stories, news articles, reviews, even a song, but never a script. I love to write though and have vowed to try every form of writing there is, so as much as I am a little nervous about the actual formatting of the script, I am sure I can do a script with no problem, I am great with dialogue and as strange as this sounds, my characters are constantly dialoguing in my head....lol...so I am going to do it, with much research on formatting ahead of time. I have read the comments previous to mine and to those who gave suggestions, thanks, I am going to take your advice.

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

November 2011 was my first OLL event, and I absolutely loved it, so I am without a doubt going to try my hand at Screnzy! I have next to no experience writing scripts...the last ones I did were for a group of my friends a few years ago (then the all started moving away, and we weren't going to replace the original cast). I really want to write a comedy script, and who knows, maybe once I meet up with my friends again - as we plan to do this year - we could perform a few scenes. Maybe I just want to write a comedy because my NaNoNovel, which I'm still working on, is so...dark. XD I think that I could design some good characters, except I'm afraid my own extremely-sarcastic "sense of humor" (personally, I think it's more along the lines of a bad habit) will rub off on them. Sarcasm doesn't always go well in writing, as demonstrated by my NaNo supporter, who sometimes comes across as being aggressive or mean since I can't go around saying "said Lysander sarcastically" every time he pokes fun.
Good Nazgul, I'm rambling. Anyway, a couple Frenzy questions: what formats do people typically use in scripts? Also, and I'm rather embarrassed to ask, what exactly is the definition of a screenplay, and how does it differ from other kinds of scripts? Thanks! ^_^

mycatduncan, have you been to Scriptfrenzy.org yet? There is a tab at the top of the home page, called Writer's Resources, that takes you to all kinds of useful information, including descriptions and examples of the different script formats, and of course there are forums on that website, just like there are here. They've been a little quiet since last April, but I have noticed some activity starting up!

I love script writing, even though I don't think I will *ever* get good at it. I tried it initially because someone said it would help me improve my dialog. I think it damaged my powers of description. But oh, what fun!

I tend to have a very hard time writing fun novels, but find it completely impossible to write a sad script. Therapy.

I wasn't sure if I was going to do Script Frenzy, but then I got bit by a Wild Plot™ and I now I have a general idea of what I want to write. Considering my comic strip has been a bit zany to start with, I figure I should be able to keep it going for 100 pages… I'm just not sure how many strips I'm going to end up with per page.

Now I just have to figure out if I can sketch fast enough to post both bits as I go… *ponders*

What do you mean by movie and sound files? Script Frenzy just requires that you type a 100-page script and upload it to the validatoras a PDF (becuse the pages get counted, not the words).

I did Screnzy 2011 and it was my first time. And although I liked it, it was much more of a struggle than NaNo. Not for the length (I got to 120 pages surprisingly easily), but because I love writing scenery and emotions - not too good in Scripts. I'm still debating as to whether I'll be taking part again, but I may skip it to go straight on to Camp NaNo.

I'm going to try it. I have no experience with scripts whatsoever, so it's all a bit intimidating, but I like a challenge. The hardest part might be coming up with an idea. Plot bunnies attack me left and right when it comes to novels, but their script siblings seems to be a bit shy.

I'm going to try this. I've never written a script or a comic before so this should be fun :D
I'll probably wing the story for it though because as of now I have no clue what to write for it and the ideas I do have are more suited for a novel.
This can also help me draw a bit more as well :)

Script Frenzy has the capability for people to upload posters and trailers for their script, just like NaNo used to have the capability for a book cover on the site.

Same idea, fun extras you can do but it's definitely not required.

Re: Script Frenzy, anyone?

Well into my plan for Screnzy now. I'm writing a TV crime drama pilot focused on computer crime.

To Mikki and Elyndra, first thing, scriptwriting software makes the formatting so much easier, and for an idea I would focus on whichever one you've got that has the strongest, bugging your brain characters, the ones where you know exactly what they'd sound like and look like. Because dialogue will be huge for a script.

The biggest difference, as dancer_kirsten noted, is that EVERYTHING has to be told through what people say and do. You can't devote paragraphs to what a landscape looks like, maybe two sentences. You can't describe how heartbroke someone is, you have to show them drinking the pain away or howling a bad rendition "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing."

I find scripts easier, but I love dialogue and tend to hate the descriptive prose and narrative, it never measures up to my head vision.

Now that I've won NaNoEdMo, I'm Screnzy ready! Even so, I'll keep working on editing that novel until midnight April 1.

I just noticed how my prose style changed during EdMo. That won't count with my visual novel script, because I haven't changed the way I write dialogue, which has always been my strong point. Now drawing, on the other hand...
