I find that studying music feeds into my writing in some interesting ways. Here are my music related goals for 2012: 1. Complete the three main ukulele classes offered at our local guitar shop by the end of June. 2. Be able to play by memory a minimum of three more tunes from Ozzie Kotani’s slack key book by the end of December 2012. 3. Be able to play by memory at least the first set of four slack key tunes from “Old Time Slack Key Guitar” 4. Add at least 12 banjo tunes to my repertoire. 5. Compete in the Topanga Banjo-Fiddle Contest, with entries in banjo and other/slack key guitar, space permitting. There's a five-volume epic I've had in my head since 1992 and must get out, after all. Second, I'm going to write at least the minimum 14 1/2 songs for the leap-year edition of <a href="http://fawm.org" rel="nofollow">FAWM</a> this February. (The 1/2 song is a collaboration, and this will be my first ever. For that, I'll have to stifle my big ego, if only a bit...) For that matter, I've been using a lot more tabulature than standard music notation. Every so often, my brain balks at the idea that the top line on the tab is the first string, which, when playing, is the bottom note physically, as in closer to the ground, but has the highest pitch. It's going to be a slack key guitar weekend for me. Today, I'm going to a workshop taught by two of the best, Jeff Peterson and Cyril Pahinui. Cyril's a great guitarist himself, but his father, Gabby, was featured pretty prominently in the soundtrack to "The Descendents", and Jeff wrote a few tunes for it as well. Tomorrow is a great big slack key guitar festival that's become an annual event around here. They always do a fabulous job with it, with hula dancers and some of the top guitarists. I'm trying to figure it out with the help of Google, but I'm not quite sure what I should put on it. I've only been playing classical guitar for a short period of time(no matter how many hours a day I practice), and have had no opportunities to play with other people, or in front of a crowd. If I only put that instrument on, it would look pretty weak. That's not my only instrument, but it is my best. I played piano for 5 or 6 years, but I haven't practiced or preformed regularily in several years. I was 1st flute in our school orchestra and was able to preform a few times, but our music program got cut, so I've fallen out of the habit of practicing every day. I've played viola and trumpet, but in my opinion it's not good enough to put on a resume. So, should I just put guitar on my resume? Or can I add flute as well? I know I'm only supposed to add relavent instruments, but really I'm not sure what is relavent. Jeff Peterson wasn't able to make it to the workshop, but Cyril Pahinui gave full value. His demonstrations were just stunning. Being four feet away from him while he played and sang "Hi'ilawe" was worth the price of admission right there. If you guitarists want to hear something cool, try tuning your guitar to CGEGCE and strum it without touching any of the frets. The day after the workshop was the Slack Key Festival, which featured some of Hawaii's top guitarists. During the concert, Cyril talked about how choked up he got watching "The Descendents" and hearing his dad's songs as a part of the soundtrack. I've performed a few times before, but most of it was with our school orchestra. It is so much scarier, but so much more satisfying when you play solo. It will be awesome. Practise lots, smile (if it's a happy song) and always remember: the audience came because they want to hear you play.
