Last November I was just way too busy with all kinds of things, which didn't leave much time for my NaNo project. Sadly, I'm pretty much always way too busy in November. Since June and August also aren't really months where I have time to spare, I decided I would just pick out another month to write a novel. So, I chose March. I think one of the great points of NaNo is that it gives us a community, a group of people who encourage eachother and share the experience. So, March is less than a week away. Do you all have an idea what you're going to write next month or will you just see where March takes you? I'm currently doubting between two idea's. One is a girl who finds out she is a dhampir and meets her vampire part of the family because another vampire wants to kill her. It's set in a sort of fantasy counterpart of the Middle Ages. The other one is set in modern day and tells the story of a dhampir girl who is (acts as) a normal teenager by day, but is a hunter of the supernatural by night. Because of a new kid at school her two worlds are in danger of colliding. I like the idea of both stories, so I'm having trouble deciding. What's everyone going to write in March? I'm doing The Haunting of Höllebergen, which is gothic Nazi steampunk vampire time travel gaslamp fantasy romance. It's about a rich young aristocrat who's the heir of a very old vampire family, and a girl with an eidetic memory, from an old family of vampire hunters, who probably grew up in a concentration camp. MMC finds FMC drowning in the ocean, saves her, and realizes that she's lost her memory. Throw in romance subplot there. Add in not exactly evil but more misguided scientific society who's messing about with time travel, and trying to mess with history, and only making things worse. Hatred between the hunters and the vampires flares up again. Somehow the girl, who knows basically everything there is to know about vampires, is the key, but I don't know how yet. I said this last year for the MayNo, but I'm going to use March to finish a novel that I've been working on since my senior year of high school. And it's the same novel, too, which makes it somewhat sadder. It's basically your typical teenage romance. Girl likes boy, boy likes girl. They never talk to each other. Girl moves halfway across the country. Boy and girl end up talking to each other. Boy's family goes to visit girl's family a few years later. They don't talk about the very obvious mutual attraction, believing wholeheartedly that the other only sees them as a friend. Other heavy topics such as eating disorders, abuse, and depression are also dealt with in the novel. I think I'll stick with this forum for any procrastination. Say you know that you won't have much time to write on weekdays, but that you have weekends free. You can decrease your weight for weekdays, depending on just *how* busy you are, and increase your weight on weekends, and WriteTrack will give you less words to aim for on weekdays, and more on weekends. If you want the same goal every day, leave them all as 100. Otherwise, you can use any number from 1 to 100 (1 being not a good writing day at all, and 100 being the best writing day) to customize your schedule on a day-by-day basis. Result? I'm in absolute agony and in far too much pain to write. Maybe when this bandage comes off (I'm not even allowed to get it wet and it really restricts my hand. I'm barely managing to write with my left hand but it takes 10 times as long to do anything. :-( So not a great start tot he month! (and it's my birthday on Saturday too so it's all a bit chaotic) Plus it's been a sad start tot he month, losing 2 people we knew within 6 hours :-( One was desperately sad, the otehr a tragedy ... and I was going into hospital less than an hour after I found out about the tragedy. I'd been writing for 12 hours straight and overthinking it, struggling to write any words at one point, then I started to doze off (or thought I did) - it turns out I was freewriting. If you'd asked me what I was writing I couldn't have told you (I'd have told you I was asleep - freewriting at it's best, when you truly have no idea that you are doing it). I was lost in the moment. Suddenly it was 3 hours later and I was over 100 pages further on - to my amazement much of it was usable! I'd added a crucial scene that I wasn't aware I needed - a disabled girl walks into a shop (no it's not a joke! :-)) and a week later someone comes in and asks if anyone's seen her ... with the thousands of visitors to a touristy shop like that they would have, how is just ONE visitor supposed to stand out. I was really impressed with what my subconscious had dredged up - and it changed the end and how they got there as well! THe shopkeeper would NEVER forget an incident like that! I didn't plan for her to have an obnoxious brother an a tyrannical father either but they put in an appearance! :-) Not sure how to word this (and I'm not very well today so it may not come out clearly) but when I'm writing those books are parrt of my life and we never know what is going to happen in life do we? None of us can predict how any day, let alone any year is going to go. So I prefer to have an element of surpise when I'm writing it. Yes I know where I'm heading and have plannedi t carefully, but I love it if I end up wriitng something that takes me off my planned route ... the characters are so real to me that I feel I am living their lives in a funny way, which has the effect that I can sometimes get thrown a curveball. Sorry, not sure if any of that makes sense - in summary, yes it does make sense (you wouldn't walk into the bookstore and read the back page of the book to see how it ends before you've read the first, would you? I used to when I was younger but half hte fun of getting there is the journey and not quite knowing it's destination ...) But I really am in love with my story, and want to pursue it. I think the constant thought of failure of not reaching my daily word count is a discouragement, so I have decided to prolong the time to 100 days, and instead try to write my entire first draft in that amount of time (about 75K is what I'm estimating).
