Sneaking in References

Has anyone else snuck in a paraphrased quote, song title, or other reference, subtle or not-so-subtle that they didn't originally plan on using?

(To be clear, I'm not referring to the word count trick of putting in song lyrics or Shakespeare quotes to make word count goals. I'm referring to references only.)

Re: Sneaking in References

I have two characters whose surnames are Holmes and Bailey, and yes, they got saddled with the nicknames "Sherlock" and "Beetle" respectively.

Sherlock Holmes' first name is actually Sherilyn, but since she's military, all her stuff is labeled "Holmes, S." and it kind of annoys her that she's been nicknamed Sherlock because his actual first name is William, which she pointed out to my FMC.

I'm not sure how Bailey came to be known as Beetle, and neither is my MMC, as he's noticed the guy doesn't seem to be interested in either insects or mid-twentieth century music.

I have a character who makes a lot of random references; I haven't managed to get him to make a lot in my story yet, but he does make them. There's been one Star Wars reference that I can remember off the top of my head that he made. I haven't written the part yet, but he's also going to reference Pearl Harbor (bonus points because I envision him as Ben Affleck).

And then another character randomly asks "Where'd you get the coconuts?" and proceeds to start going through that skit from Holy Grail, completely out of context of everything, regardless of the person he's talking to not responding in kind.

I haven't written it yet, but there's going to be a scene where Aubrey's being tortured after trying to escape, and in an attempt to be his snarky, normal self, he's going to be like,
"Well, you found me. Congratulations. Was it worth it? Because despite your violent behavior, the only thing you managed to break so far...is my heart."

And at one point, my characters start singing (only for a few lines, so it's not using lyrics to pad word count) start singing Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. It's the song I picked as the theme song for my novel. :)

He starts singing The Night I Punched Russell Crowe by Gaelic Storm.

He says "Hey, chicka bump-bump," a line used by Caboose in Red Vs. Blue.

He tries to get his best friend to go through Who's On First?, the classic (and legendary) comedy sketch by Abbot and Costello.

Which reminds me, there was an episode of House where they snuck in a Monty Python reference.
Wilson: I'm not here to argue, House!
House: You're right, you'd be in Room 12A.

This was a reference to Argument Clinic, one of my favorite Monty Python sketches.

Re: Sneaking in References

I included so, so many.

Here's the main ones:
I Rickrolled the Reader. Twice.
I basically described Link when describing a character (who turned out to be the first Big Bad, but oh well).
In fact, that character seemed to be a magnet for Zelda references. Like the Blue Tunic and Iron Boots combination, the 'sleeping for seven years' thing, Ganonball etc.
I quoted Zero Wing (All your base...). I quoted Pokémon (Hi! I like shorts! They're comfy and easy to wear!). I quoted Ace Attorney (Why it is that, lately, the only thing I want to do is cry...?).
I quoted one of the Moon Children from Majora's Mask.
I had a planet called Moo Moo Farm (reference to Diablo II, which may have originally been a reference to Mario Kart). And a character mentioned Wirt's Leg in relation to it. And called it 'cow level'.
I mentioned House of Leaves. Including blue text for 'House'.
I included so, so many tropes. And references to tropes. And references to TV Tropes.
I quoted Sheldon from Big Bang Theory.
I referenced Heisenberg having to go to Heligoland.
I referenced Portal multiple times, mostly in relation to an AI.
Said AI ended up having a Blue Screen of Death. After quoting Error from the second Zelda game.
Nyan Cat made an appearance. And then died.
When characters were choosing a name for one of them, 'Legolas' was suggested.
Schrodinger's Cat made a few appearances. Mainly because it takes place on a planet called 'Schrodinger'.
And it's specified that it is not named any variation of 'Agrajag', a character from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy who died frequently.
I quoted 8-Bit Theater.
The prophet apparently watches Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The annoying princess is a fairly blatant reference to Ruto from Ocarina of Time.
I included mention of a Mr Justin Bailey. (Justin Bieber expy with the name from a Metroid code.)
James Bond was mentioned once as a basis for comparison.
I even quoted the old Legend of Zelda cartoon.
I referenced a scene from Ouran High School Host Club.
I used a modified quote from a Mario game. (The result was "Your Princess is on another planet.")
A couple of characters sang a Queen song.
The 'sitting in a tree' song appears a couple of times.
The original Big Bad's assistant is called Lawrence, like in Ratchet & Clank.
The original Big Bad's backstory was inspired by the chorus of a song by a local band that's since broken up.
I made so many references to stuff I learned in school (including a dot jumping off a cliff).
A character borrowed Excalibur's catch phrase from Soul Eater at one point. Although I think that one may have been accidental.
A character ended up talking about Age of Empires II at one point. Another character recited a cheat code from Doom at another point.
I had the obligatory Monty Python reference, wrapped in a Warcraft reference.
A character sang the Llama Song at one point. About a cow.
Also: "My hovercraft is full of eels."

And that's not including the multiple references I made to my other stories and/or inside jokes.

Okay, that is absolutely brilliant xD And it never occurred to me until just now how many ship names could pass perfectly for fantasy lands...

Anyway. I'm only outlining, but I already have a few references mixed in.

The FMC of my June novel is named Michelle, but several characters refer to her as 'Chell', so that sort of references Portal xD The title, Big Sister, is a double reference- not just to Big Brother in 1984, but also to the Big Sister enemy in Bioshock 2.

The mentor to the MC of my August novel is named Jude... so you just know there's going to be a 'Hey Jude' reference in there somewhere. ... in world where The Beatles never existed. This should be interesting xD
