This year for NaNo, since I had tons of unfinished novels laying around, I decided to do a few novellas and lengthy short stories. Out of the 7 stories I lined up, I finished four of them. Three of the stories (2 shorts and 1 novella) were sent out to publishers for consideration. One will be in an anthology and the other two will be stand alone.
I had all three picked up by the publishers I sent them to. I didn't get much over 50k because I didn't want a big mess to deal with when I knew I'd send them out. It paid off. I'm hoping to finish the other two novellas so I can get them out into the shark tank as well.
I'll be in a similar boat in a few months with the story I'm working on. I'm 'blaming' NaNoWriMo for it because it encouraged me to write, write a lot, and write on a regular basis. I'll also have to 'blame' Lazette Gifford's "NaNo for the New and the Insane" for the Phase Outline idea that helped me overcome a writing problem I have.
Four NaNoWriMos and one practice NaNoWriMo since June of 2010, plus additional writing in the 'off' months has made a big difference.
Wow! Congratulations, I am so happy for you :D Just out of curiosity, how much editing did it take before your novella was ready? I have a novel that I am hoping to send off soon and I am on my second draft (is that enough?)
I'm a minimalist when I write and, this year for NaNo, I edited as I went. At least, for the pieces I wanted to send out right away. When I edit on the small pieces, it's one run through after the rough draft and that's it. I look for plot holes, missing punctuation etc. I'm a firm believer if you pour over a story too much, you could make it into mush.
On the novella, I had the publisher ask me to increase the word count because I had it wrong. I'm sure after the first round of edits, it will be more. At least, that's my experience with this publisher.
Apologies for not getting back sooner... I'm in the middle of holiday craziness!
It's sort of a strangely coincidental story, but I got connected with a publisher that specializes in my genre (Sherlock Holmes pastiche), and they decided to pick up my book! I'm sort of dazed at the moment, and I can't quite believe I have a contract waiting for me that I will probably sign tomorrow.
Congratulations to everyone who gets published! :) Ony of the awesome people from my writing group is getting published too this year. Of course we're all going to buy the book once it's out.
Congratulations to all of you! I hope to join your ranks soon. I am published but not through any of my nano projects. My first novel is being made into a film this year, as is my second, and I haven't even got a publisher for it (I'm hoping it will get picked up when - or before - the film comes out).
No, honestly. I can't give any more information out right now for contractual reasons but the minute I can I'll be back on this forum with bells on, shouting from the rooftops! :-)
We are hoping the film will be released December 2013 but, due to cirumstances beyond our control it may be later than that :-(
I also have a call booked with a publisher who says she likes it. I have had a lawyer look over the contract and he says that, although they are stingy it's a very good one ... and my friend who introduced me has now got his books in Russia and China and Japan. Check out Michael Rowland and Daniel M Warlock (both the same person but Michael wrote 9/11 under his own name and Leap Year under the other - Leap Year is a children's "horror" story. Michael recommended me to the publishing company he works with ...
So, I sent my finalized manuscript off to the publisher a couple of days ago, and now I'm in that, "What if everyone hates it?" waiting game. I have nothing to complain about, and I'm beyond delighted that my book got picked up, but it's still a bit nail-biting to wait for it to be out for the world to see.
Writing for a very specialized genre (Sherlock Holmes pastiche in my case) is a sort of double-edged sword. On one hand, there's a guaranteed audience who seek out your type of book. On the other hand, they're a picky group because they know the source material, and they have a tradition of meticulously-researched books to choose from.
Anyway, I'm extremely happy that I will soon have my book in my hands, but I have a certain amount of trepidation about its reception. It's my first book, and I've never done this before. Does anyone who's been there have any words of wisdom to offer?
My NaNo2010 novel is coming out on February the 28th. :-) I've had two previous sales, but this is the first one that started as a NaNoWriMo novel. Hoping this one is the first of many!
Recon One-Five, my nanowrimo novel for 2011, has officially been published! It's available as a kindle edition only at the moment and only on the UK amazon site for a few days, but it'll be released as paperback within the week. This is my second novel, although the first wasn't nanowrimo-related. I fully plan to publish every nanowrimo novel i write the same way every year! lol! Check out "The Legend of Adam Caine" and its spin-off, "Recon One-Five" on amazon.co.uk!
NaNo Success: Published!

That's fantastic! Congratulations! Who is the lucky publisher (other than Kindle which sadly I haven't got - I've got a Kobo ereader ...)?
Re: NaNo Success: Published!
Createspace.com, you can get a paperback copy. To be honest, I haven't got a kindle either, lol!
