Introductions

Hey, all. Excited about my 8th NaNoWriMo this year. My name is Sara and this year I'm going to attempt a mystery. I'm still working out the details, but it's going to be set in a coastal town in Maine and involve a scandalous affair.

I live and work in the DC area and would be happy to chat and make new friends. My twitter handle is @cloverdew for those who want to follow and interact there. Cheers!

Thanks for getting us started on the intros Sara! :)

Hi everybody, I'm Chuck. I'm one of your Municipal Liaisons (ML) for the DC region. Got any questions, comments, concerns about November, NaNo, life, whatever, haha, just ask myself or the other ML Kay. That's what we're here for.

Like Sara, I'm writing a mystery novel this year. Mine will be set in DC in the 1930s.

I too live and work in the DC area. Catch me on Twitter, @osyrn. (See the Twitter thread in the DC Region Forum for more details on following DC NaNo on Twitter).

Hey all. I'm Sarah, and I basically just decided to do NaNoWriMo today because I need force myself to get something done. That means I have a lot of planning to do in a short amount of time. I'll be writing a soft SF novel using some old material of mine for inspiration. I'm sarkadark on skype if anyone wants to chat via text or voice.

Hey,

I'm (another) Sarah, working in Arlington and living even further out, but will try to make it in to DC events when possible.

I am finally getting my plot worked through a little in my head, which involves secrets, world travel/searching for answers, and a fake Mount Everest. This is my second year doing NaNoWriMo and though I ostensibly have less time this year (will be away hiking for a week), I am still going to aim for 50K! [crosses fingers]

Hi! I'm Jenny. I'm 24 and I live in South Arlington with my husband, two cats, and rambunctious puppy. I work in Dupont Circle AND I'm a student at Johns Hopkins' part time MA Writing program, so I'm in DC constantly, so I'll be hopping back and forth between the here and the NOVA group! :)

I've been doing NaNo since high school, but I've only won once (last year!). I worked on that novel for the rest of the year, and I'm ready for a bit of a break before I finish my edits on Draft 2. I'm very excited to start this year's project! It's YA paranormal romance/urban fantasy involving a colony of French refugees in NE Pennsylvania, a voodoo curse, and of course, lots of kissing. It's a bit of a departure from what a normally write (Epic Fantasy/Steampunk) but I'm really looking forward to working on something that's a bit smaller in scope. :)

I'm looking forward to meeting you guys! :)

I'm Jonathan, I live near the Petworth neighborhood. This is my third NaNo ever and my second in the District of Cool. Very excited for this year.

I'm writing the third and central part of a five-part fantasy series set in a medieval world that I've been working on for a few years (though I did another story last NaNo). And yes, there are kataphrakts there. A land of intrigue, awesome birds, and romance! And solving/starting problems with violence!

Looking forward to meeting you all!

My birthday is toward the end of NaNo, so I'm hoping to have built a buffer large enough to take a day or two off. We'll see.

I basically have no plot, so I'm going to return to card-making now.

Josh, out in Germantown. I've been looking for a project to take my mind off of work and I've always wanted to write a novel but have never stuck to it, so I think the deadline will push me a bit. I also taped a Jeopardy episode in August and am going insane waiting for it to air in December, so this should take my mind away!

The idea I've kicked around for a while involves someone who leaves a small town because of a tragedy and is drawn back by another. Good times. It's told in a mixture of current time and flashback.

My name is Kristen, and I live in Manassas, Virginia. I am a part-time (for now, hoping for full-time) teacher. I just moved here a couple of months ago.

The inspiration for my novel is all of the Civil War anniversary activity going on, and a young woman who finds Civil War photographs in her grandmother's house leaves home to do research behind the people in the photos and uncover the identity of the photographer.

And then there is a swarm of other ideas ....

Hey everyone,

My name is Cat and I'm actually a part of the NoVA region but always looking for excuses to get into DC. I spoke with Chuck/Orion to make sure it was moreorless okay for me to join you in the DC region since I've only been in one, very small region in my previous NaNo's back in Chicago-land. This is a new account for a new area, but I've done NaNo for many years. This will be my third serious attempt in a row and I'm aiming at 75k since I have nothing else to do all day.

A bit about me: I'm a post-graduate in English, history/classics/medievalism and a lover of all things myth and folklore, as well as hockey so I'm currently suffering severely with this lockout. Writing is a hobby that I've hoped to make into a career for many years, but we'll see how that goes. I'm really looking forward to meeting all of you next month as well.

Hi everybody! My name is Rebecca and this is my very first Nanowrimo. I've always wanted to write a novel but have never gotten around to actually doing it, so here I am! I currently live in the Mt. Vernon triangle and work at a museum library downtown. My book will be a sort of supernatural/fantasy thriller involving inexperienced archivists and strange artifacts better left alone. I still need to flesh out the plot a little, but it will be exciting to see where it takes me!

Hi all! My name is Violetta. This is my sixth NaNo and my second in the DC area. Jonathan (Kataphract85) and I moved up here from Florida in August of last year. I have a degree in creative writing and I'd love to make a living as a writer someday, but right now I'm tempering that with another of my loves, nonprofit communications. That said, I'd like to start self-publishing my novels here in the next year or so and see where that goes.

We're in Petworth now, but will likely be moving somewhere more central in mid-to-late November.

My novel this year is a re-write of an urban high fantasy trilogy I wrote for my first three NaNos. I'm condensing it down into one book, and switching out main characters. I'd like to get this story actually told, once and for all! :D

Hello, I'm Brandon in Columbia Heights. Going to make my second attempt at this. Last year I hadn't even heard about NaNoWriMo until a week into the month then I made the mistake of trying to write about a stupid plotless story that even I didn't care for (my flawed logic was, why waste one of my GOOD ideas on something like this? ... of course all those "good" ideas remain unwritten). I finally gave up my culdesac of a story about halfway into the month.

I may try to go to the kick off event on Sunday. As of now I'm scheduled to work but that could change.

Re: Introductions

Hello fellow writers! I'm Paul, a first time NaNoWriMo-er just in from New York, now working in Rockville and living in Cleveland Park. I have been writing for the past few years throughout college, mostly short stories that weren't very good. I mostly write sci-fi or fantasy/new age fiction, mostly involving dreams, psychosis (the various forms thereof), space travel, and the human element. My background in psychology, philosophy, computer science, physics, and aerospace engineering (my actual occupation) definitely have a big influence on my writing.

The novel I am planning to write is a fantasy/new age crossover about the connection between two people in a dream world. I've been dreaming (get it?!!?) about this novel for at least 5 years and now is the time to write it, I hope. If that fails, I will probably switch to a sci-fi novel about a few groups of people trying to survive after an apocalyptic event (no zombies, promise). I know that story line has been beat to hell but I have a new spin on it that I think is unique.

Hi everyone. I'm Sarah (just, you know, like everyone else, apparently), and I decided that I was going to bite the bullet and do Nano all of about an hour ago. This will be my second real attempt at Nano, after winning back in 2010 with a novel that was so atrocious I'm fairly certain it never made the move between old laptop to new, but it's my first attempt here in DC and I'm hoping to get out to some write-ins and meet some new people. I'm a grad student at GW and do live around there when I'm not working out on the mall or in the middle of nowhere.

As for my novel, it's a convoluted mix of horror/supernatural/YA/fantasy all in super vague terms that I was thinking about writing anyway, so what's waiting a couple extra days and putting it on an accelerated timeline, all things considered?

I'm a native Washingtonian who is back at home while getting my visa together (I got married in April to a Brit! long long story). I went to one event last year but wasn't able to attend anymore/finish because of personal reasons so I'm ready to write and mingle this year! I can't wait to meet all of you and happy writing to everybody.

Greetings All,
My name is Logan, fairly new to the DC area having moved here in January. I am intrigued by Sarah's coastal town in Maine, as much of my novel will take place in New England as well, and there will be plenty of boating also (one of the protagonists' father owns a shipping company.)

Hi everyone!

My name is Regina and I just moved to DC from the great city of Chicago! This is my first attempt at writing a novel EVER. I'm terrified.

I have a very general idea of what I will be writing. It involves Mennonites - which I know little to nothing about! Gah! So any help in that regard would be much appreciated.

Really, any help at all would be amazing.

Looking forward to meeting/working/learning with you all--

Hi everyone. My name is Learned, and I had the good fortune of meeting some of you at the kick-off event at Burger King (!) last Saturday, and the ACTUAL kick-off event Halloween night in the Foggy Bottom Starbucks!

I live in Dupont Circle, and I'm looking forward to some late night Nanowrimo'ing, as I have a job where I work 12 hours a day or more (I'm taking a small break now, but I have a few more hours left of work tonight). So especially interested in weekend write-ins, and/or those that take place after 8 pm.

Here's the teaser for my novel (from my novel home page):

TITLE: Ayahuasca

SYNOPSIS:
Two roommates living in Boston decide to go on a trip to Peru to try ayahuasca, a legendary drug practiced for centuries by shamans in the Amazon.

Fred is an uptight and obsessive Christian ex-pothead, who fears opening a connection to the spirit world that he might not be able to close. Lyndon is a snarky atheist looking to explore the neurochemistry of DMT.

As the roommates discover themselves, the natural world, and the depths of philosophy, Ayahuasca tells the hilarious story of the ultimate road-trip ... "Eat Pray Love" on-- well-- drugs.

(Disclaimer: I have never read Eat Pray Love, but I saw the movie trailer)

Hey All,
I'm Zack. This is my first, and I'm skeptical I'll get through it. I've been kicking around an idea in my head, and I have my mornings free for the month of November, and I saw a random tweet about this, and I decided that if nothing else it'll get me to put finger to keyboard. I don't have a fully fleshed theme or concept or genre or, like, characters, but output usually isn't a problem so I hope to just cobble something together.

Feedback on staying motivated is appreciated. You all seem so accomplished and motivated. Oh, and I live in Petworth, so may try to make it out to a write up thingy, especially in CH.

I can still remember the first time I did NaNo--I was skeptical, too. But it turned out to be a lot of fun, which is basically the point. :)

If you like you can try reading NaNo for the New and the Insane, a free ebook by Lazette Gifford. Definitely also check out WikiWrimo, run by sushimustwrite.

There might be a Friday night write-in at Columbia Heights.

I don't live in the DC area, but will be there in a week, so added this to my regions in case there were any meet-ups, write-ins or DC writers who might want to catch up some word count on Sunday, 11th November. I'll be in Woodley Park, but I have a Smartrip card and have easy access to the Metro. This year's writing is supposed to be a thriller, we'll see how it really ends up. Cheers!

I'm looking forward to attending some write-ins this year. It's always fun, a great motivation, to meet other nanos in person! :)

Hi! My name is Kaitlynn and this is my first year! I've always done poetry and very short stories, so I'm diving into novel-writing mode and figured this is the best way to actually sit down and do it (and keep myself concentrated for more than 20 minutes!!). I'm 22 and graduated from the University of Illinois in May, and then I packed my bags and moved out here for work. So it's a big transition year for me all around.

My novel is literary fiction about siblings traveling across the country - not really YA as the characters are older and post-grad, but I'd like it to reach a bit of YA audience as well.

Excited to start this year, and hopefully I can get to some write-ins! I work until 5:30 (and usually am still working until 6), but I work in Logan circle and live by the Cathedral, so I hope there are some near me!

hi! i'm kinda shy about my writing myself, actually in Mt. Rainier, MD, but literally a 3 minute walk from DC, so i figured this would be okay. i'm originally from NW NJ, which is why i have that as one of my locations. this is my first nanowrimo, and although i have a bunch of unfinished projects, i'm a nutcase and decided to start a brand new one just for this purpose. it's kinda unplanned- i have a vague idea where i'm going with it, but because i usually analyze things to death, i figured i'd let loose for once. for me, this is as much about having the courage to have other people look at what i write as actually getting any words on the page, since the former is what's really lacking in my life.

I'm Emily. I'm a librarian in DC. I'm doing this because I always thought I would be able to write a decent novel if I forced myself to do it. (Also I bet someone $50.) It's been slow going so far, as I am a world class procrastinator.

My library (The DCPL Chevy Chase Library) is hosting a number of write-ins on Wednesdays from 6 to 9. There will be coffee, power strips, and spotty wifi, which I feel is a bonus.

Good luck!

My name is Jenn and this is my second NaNo and the first NaNo I've won. (It's easy to be confident during Week 1.) My story is a modern retelling of a dated and morose fairy-tale. The evil in the story is dependency, the good is independence, and the narrator is a reclusive, high-functioning autistic man with a very unusual obsession.

I'd say more, but I already feel a gazillion words behind.
