A friend of mine is the chef there, and there are lots of good (though not as cheap as a bakery) veggie and non-veggie food options, in addition to drinks etc. I visited recently (it opens at 5 PM) and it seemed roomy, and I actually mentioned I was thinking of suggesting a write-in over there. The guy who wrote back to me was worried that it would be difficult to comfortably accommodate a larger group that night, and while he didn't/couldn't say not to come, he did specifically offer to put aside tables near outlets in advance if we were to do this Monday instead of Wednesday. I apologize for complicating our options, I hadn't realized that these two events there might make it overcrowded on the particular night I'd identified! I'd say we could still more casually meet at the bar (I think it's actually in the middle of the room), but it could be nicer to know we can meet as a group. I will be at Meridian-Pint at 6-6:30 monday night, but I find the socializing much more enjoyable if there is a solid 45-60 minute period of actual writing. If I needed distractions, there are many options, but places to be inspired and focused on writing - virtually none. In my regular writing group, we usually have a schedule like this: first 20-30 minutes: the check-in. We chit chat, socialize, catch up, and talk about writing. then two 40 minute writing critiques then a 20 minute writing prompt and 15 minutes at the end to share what we wrote. For nano - I'm thinking (1) be there on time, and have a solid 30-45 minute socializing time. (2) 45-60 minutes of actual writing (3) post-writing chit chat. For people showing up an hour late, you blew it. suck it up and get to work. There's always another chance to socialize at the end. A couple things: because the manager there who I've been in communication with was on the one hand concerned about accomodating our size - that's why it got changed to tonight in the 1st place - and on the other hand really friendly in promising to set aside some space with fair advanced notice for tonight, I told him the same details I'd posted: official starting time 7 pm, with me getting there a bit early to set up with him. I expect if all goes well this time, they wouldn't worry in future about the size - but it's not a big space and they did want to "place" the group this time. Once we're initially there, at least several, naturally you can resituate as appropriate, and with regards to more of an outright writerly group vs. more social. In terms of that, I'm the polar opposite as far as pre-planning when to do what, and with people on multiple schedules, I'm not going tp "penalize" later arrivals - have to do enough of that as an instructor! I've found that joining an already quieted-down group quietly is appropriate, and the opposite. Designating blocks of time to write is important, but so is inclusivity and making sure people want to be there. Let's see how the timing works out for people, possibly separate into writing/socializing, given the venue, and make sure by about 7:30 to have agreed on/started some quiet writing. Sorry for being more detailed on this one - it's more pre-arranged with pub staff than other write-ins have been with staff. Hoping for the best - and to be invited back!
