write-ins -- who attended when and where

General Instructions
Please share with the region your reports and experiences from the write-ins you host and those that you attend. You can also share what wordcounts you achieved at each write-in.

Caribou write-in, 11/2/11, 6:25 p.m.
(First Write-in for the Naperville Region in 2011)

As people trickle into the Caribou on Wednesday evening, they sat first at the four corners of a table for six, then grabbed the table for four nearby. Settling in takes a few minutes, or more as old friends are greeted and names are exchanged with new writers, and coffee, hot chocolate and other yummy drinks are ordered. Soon, the ear plugs go in, and the writing intensifies.

And we haven't even started the word wars yet.

Eight people (so far) are spending a Wednesday evening at a coffee shop in Naperville, writing at the same time.

Isn't NaNoWriMo fun?

Re: write-ins -- who attended when and where

I went to the write-ins today at both the Carol Stream and Woodridge libraries. Total round-trip, I drove 125 miles. I wrote a total of 2,768 words, all by hand--my highest in a single day so far. I won a cute little turtle for being "slow and steady" with the word wars, writing almost the exact same number of words in every 15-minute war. I had an absolute blast.

And since all 2,768 of those words were hand-written... I don't just have writer's cramp in my hand. I have it in my entire ARM. Ow... If anyone needs me, I'll be cuddling with an ice pack.

The write-in in Woodridge, November 5th

Catherine (Cee-Bee) kindly hosted the write-in at the Woodridge Public Library, working closely with Woodridge Public Library librarian Denise Murray. She provided wonderful little prizes and also came up with the whimsical wearing of the second-win hats (an honor achieved by winning a word war for the second time). Achieving this high estate were Brian (cableshaft) and Katherine (Squiddish).

Catherine is hosting one more write-in in Woodridge in two weeks; she also says that there are plenty of tables and power outlets in the Woodrige Public Library in general, so folks in the vicinity might do well to check it out. Google maps are available.

Attending the write-in were:

Tim / NewMexicoKid 9

Brian / cableshaft 4

Victoria / pazuzu 4

Catherine / Cee-Bee 2

Erica / bagofhamsters 4

Susan / susansuth attempted many times since 2003

melissa / ziplizard 3

Mandy / amandajulius 1

Ky / scrapacat 2

Mary / Teenwriter 5

Joe / Corrupted flame 9 (won 3 times)

Lisa / TogetherAgain 1

Chris / Schreibkrampf 4

Kate / KateEileen 1

Katherine / Squiddish 3

Becky / Sapphire 9

Jessica / Gaeliceyes 4

personal stats
I will do a big write-up in our blog soon, complete with pictures; but until then I wanted to share some personal stats. Here is my wordcount graph across 7 word wars in two write-ins. I averaged 37.2 words per minute for 3793 words in a cumulative 1.7 hours of word wars. The two write-ins combined for five hours (not including driving time) and I wrote a combined total of 4568 words in those 5 hours, This comes down to 2231 words per hour in the word wars or 914 words per hour across both write-ins.

What do these stats say? I think my writing efficiency is very high in focused word wars. I'll need to see the stats in the online jabber wars, but it seems clear that, for me, word wars help me focus on writing. I did do some writing between word wars; there were also opportunities to chat a little with the other participants, which is welcome.

group lunch
Ten of us had a wonderful group lunch in between the Carol Stream write-in and the Woodrige one. Great chit-chat.

book recommendations
For Carol and Katherine (Squiddish), here are the book recommendations I mentioned:

David Brin's Uplift books, especially the Hugo and Nebula award-winning Startide Rising (that deals with uplifted dolphins crewing their own starship)

Greg Bear's Eon, Eternity (fantastic books with great scientific concepts), Anvil to the Stars/Forge of God (a cautionary tale about sending messages to the stars with a path back to Earth) and Blood Music (intelligent nanites)

Stephen Baxter's Manifold: Space, Manifold: Origin and Manifold: Time (For Squiddish--the Manifold: Space one is the one with the space-faring squids)

Thanks to Sarah Kovacs (Carol Stream Public Library), Denise Murray (Woodridge Public Library) and Catherine (Cee-Bee) for hosting at Woodridge!

Also, a correction in the attendance at Woodridge: It wasn't Kate, it was Cayt/CaytEileen (sorry about that, Cayt!)

Starbucks in Barnes & Noble at Geneva Commons, Sunday, 11/6/11 from 1:30 - 3:30 (and beyond.)

For a while it looked like a Katherine was going to win every word war (since Squiddish and I were the only ones there), but then Brian (cableshaft) arrived just as Squiddish was closing in on his word count. She passed him by ten words while he ordered coffee, then they were back and forth. By the time I left, they were muttering about possibly making it into the top ten.

There will be another write-in next Sunday -- possibly in Batavia, or in Geneva. I'll post it once I figure out exactly where and when. It's fun to watch Squiddish and cableshaft compete, and maybe a few more people will join us.

The Caribou in downtown Downers Grove, Sunday, 2011/11/06 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

The attendees included catatone1, Sapphire, and I. We had two word wars, both won by catatone1. Mostly just regular writing, not a ton of competition to report. =P But it was productive nonetheless, as we met some important goals.

As I mentioned in the other thread I created, we plan to make this a weekly thing on Tuesday nights. So if anyone else wants to come out, feel free!

Due to the short notice and possibly the lack of an announcement thread, it was just Corrupted Flame, catatone1, and myself at the write in. We hope to see more people join us in the next few weeks, Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30/9ish! We had a couple word wars and coffee and all in all we met our goals and were successful!

Naperville (Nichols Library), November 6th

We had 18 people at the first Sunday write-in in the NPL system: this one was at Nichols Library in downtown Naperville, where it is always a challenge to find parking ;-)

Those present included:
Tim / NewMexicoKid
Linda / QBerty
Beth / TipTappity
kirsten / Llark
Sarah / WritingStudent
Diane / dianedra
ethan / ethancherry
Cindy / CROUSSEAU
Melissa / ziplizard
Patricia / iamthecreativewriter
Diane / DivineLight
Pat / eyewrite
Rachel / PernersiDelta (couldn't make this out from the sign-in sheet)
Jerry / JJDavis
Robin / RobinM
Kristen / Deathbypenz
+ two others who didn't sign in (had a total of 18 people there)

I had jabber account requests from WritingStudent, ethancherry, CROUSSEAU, iamthecreativewriter, Qberty, Deathbypenz and pesnersiDelta? (couldn't read this name). I'll send nanomail soon with logins and passwords.

We took stats for a special word war prize at the end: the greatest percentage leap from the write-in. Here are the stats (from those who participated; some people didn't have their starting point noted; a few left before this point):

16.47%
24.34%
33.34%
35.37%
40.51%
21.87%
40.57%
22.03%
45.74%
23.36%
109.50%
176.14%

Quite impressive for a write-in! I believe it was RobinM who won with 176%.

Overall, the stats above started from an average of 8982 words that ended with an average of 11869 words.

I will post photos on the blog soon.

In between 15 minute word wars for books, plot chicken, lotion, etc. there is a lot of talk about who is ahead or behind who on the region chart.

Well, it was a write-in of 1 at Four Beans, although I made quite a lot of hopeful and probably awkward eye contact with everyone who walked in. Fortunately, I like to talk to strangers, and the on-and-off hail provided lots of conversation breaks while I wrote. I got about 2 thousand words in, so a productive two hours for me.

After threatening to disconnect David's internet ourselves because he CHECKED THE INTERNET DURING A WORD WAR, we may have convinced him to quit checking it--or to fib about it.

Prizes were a notebook, and plot creatures.

We did so much talking that most are going to lunch to continue this write-in that is also a meet-up.

Re: write-ins -- who attended when and where

I spent about four and a half hours at today's write-in, during which time I hand-wrote 2,226 words. Then I got home and typed all of that up in about half an hour, which is kind of depressing if you think about it.

But my approximation of what I wrote during the word war turned out to be spot-on: exactly 343 words, more than I've ever done in a word war. For achieving an impressive personal best, I got a plot sea turtle, which is keeping an eye on me right now and wondering why I'm hanging out on the forum when I could OBVIOUSLY be writing more now, because the writer's cramp isn't THAT bad... And if it weren't for my thumb, I would agree.

Made the 11-11 Caribou write-in and even won one of the coveted journals Katherine is so graciously giving for word war prizes! My daughter will be pleasantly surprised when she gets home tonight since I promised to give one to her if I won one. An even bigger prize was that I received a call in the middle of the write-in that I was needed immediately for a temp job just down the street so unfortunately I had to recant on my luncheon promise at Rock Bottom. Hope everyone had a good lunch (while I ran through the McDonald's drive-thru and had the wonderfully nutritious cheeseburger and fries).

Checking in here at the 95th street library a little late due to having done my Black Friday shopping at Toys 'r Us to complete the birthday AND holiday shopping needed. Strike one more item off the to-do list!

Took us a few minutes to settle down. KatherineWriting is being a bad influence. (Or David's presence haunts this Caribou now. :) )

But we got writing done. And looked at the word count graph http://naperwrimo.org/faces/2011/naperville.shtml and admired plot critters and notebooks.
Another good write-in, not sure if there will be one next Friday or not. (Black Friday.) If you're interested, send KatherineWriting a NaNoMail.

It was a raucous affair, but you can see the percentage increase of most of the 14 folks in attendance (Steve's not doing NaNo and Ryan left before we took the final wordcount). Sarah and Joe each won the hat/second win award and Joe also won the biggest % increase on his novel.

Many thanks to Catherine (Cee-Bee) for doing a great job of hosting and running the write-in!

We had 17 people at today's write-in at the 95th Street Library, including three (Mary, Brian and Carly) who made it across the 50k line (I think Becky may also have done so too):

Sarah won the fluffalo, Joe won the dragon, Katherine won the lion; I don't remember who won what after that, but the sparkly cat, the rainbow scarf'd black bunny, the carrot were among the plot critters that have been given new homes!

We did the Box of Doom; I think it was very successful overall at inspiring folks, but I ran out of the 72% dark chocolate squares. Will definitely look to doing this more next year.

Barry (FinBarMcG) has a theory that the men are all in their caves writing. Maybe, or maybe they mainly come to write-ins on the weekend.
:)

It was a good morning's work. People won a plot bunny, a notebook, and a finger puppet.

Of course you bounced, you had a tiger on your finger!

I'm pleased that people seem to be enjoying the write-ins. And I'm even getting some writing done at them myself.

(Last night I stopped at the new Caribou on Ogden and Columbia n Naperville, and practically drooled at all the empty tables and outlets (some on the floor.))

Soon as I get a chance (and it won't confuse people) I'm scheduling something there.
personal stats
I will do a big write-up in our blog soon, complete with pictures; but until then I wanted to share some personal stats. Here is my wordcount graph across 7 word wars in two write-ins. I averaged 37.2 words per minute for 3793 words in a cumulative 1.7 hours of word wars. The two write-ins combined for five hours (not including driving time) and I wrote a combined total of 4568 words in those 5 hours, This comes down to 2231 words per hour in the word wars or 914 words per hour across both write-ins.
And, of course, I forgot to post that graph! Here it is:

Thanks for keeping track of all the participants and occurrences at the WPL write-in, Tim. I bow in homage to your organization and ability to write stuff down other than your novel. Also to the amazing word counts amassed by Brian, Katherine, Joe, you and others!

Looking forward to the next Woodridge Public Library write-in on November 19, 1:30-4:30 pm!

Katherine was a big bully!!! All I wanted to do was check if all you, my lil writing buddies, were OK!!

My first ever write in was fun, Just me and cableshaft and gorgeous women!!! What more could a guy ask for. Socially it was really great ...but i just can't write as part of a team :( Maybe I may have got more words done if Katherine had not moved us from our seats three time. ;)

Sounds like a wonderful outing! Congrats to everyone who improved their wordcount. Remember, I'll be at the Sugar Grove Library almost all day and night Wednesday (1 to 9 p.m.). I know we will have a few more in the evening. Come play! I'll try to have some little goodies to share.

So many of you are soooo very close - come join us for challenges on Jabber if you can't make a write in. We're gaining on Maryland! How great will it be to say our region beat an entire STATE!

{Tim can give you jabber accounts and help get you started. I can only corrupt you...}

Great pep talk, Ky! I can definitely provide jabber accounts for folks who want to be a word-warrin' from here until the very end!

I am amazed. It may only be temporary, but today we've drawn almost within 1000 words (that's a gain of 1500 words per wrimo! and we know that many folks haven't been writing, so great job to those who have!!!).

Go Naperville!

David,
Anyone who is still continuing to write as much as you evidently have can count themselves as attending ;-)

I posted pictures on our blog.

I did have to quit Nano the Site for several days because i was chatting WAAAY to much.
