Introduce yourself to the region!

Note: <a href="http://naperwrimo.org/archives/2010/Illinois::Naperville/" rel="nofollow">We have an archive of 2010-2011 posts in our region</a> (for those who introduced themselves and want to copy/paste their entry in this thread).

I'm Tim aka NewMexicoKid. With Katherine (KatherineWriting) and Dave (TRRDEDEAN), I am one of your volunteer co-Municipal Liaisons. We're here to answer questions, set up <a href="http://naperwrimo.org/events" rel="nofollow">local events</a> and cheer you on to victory. I first NaNo'd in 2003 after hearing about NaNoWriMo just three days before November 1st that year. I've successfully completed the 50,000+ goal each year; and I hope to continue this streak. My first year as co-ML was 2005.

I typically write fantasy (I tried SF one year, but found it too much work to try to do research and writing in November). My this year's novel is a story about an orphaned Faerie princess who was brought up as a rat in our world and who must discover her true identity in time to save her extended family and her people in Faerie (still working out the full plot). I like to use <a href="http://xmind.net" rel="nofollow">XMind</a> in my plot preparation; and I strongly recommend <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Writing-Emotional-Impact-Karl-Iglesias/dp/1595940286" rel="nofollow">Writing for Emotional Impact</a>, by Karl Iglesias (also see <a href="http://naperwrimo.org/wiki/index.php?title=Book_Recommendations" rel="nofollow">the list of book recommendations on our wiki</a>).

I helped design the original wcapi (word count API) for NaNoWriMo (working closely with Russ/firebus) and I designed and maintain <a href="http://graphing.teiru.net/2010" rel="nofollow">wordcount graphs</a> for our region that have been pretty popular/helpful motivators.

I am part of the <a href="http://journey.naperwrimo.org" rel="nofollow">Journey</a>, our year-round writing group that is currently working to wrap up two short story anthologies (nanomail me for details if you're interested in joining us for next year); and I enjoy drawing, reading SF and Fantasy, tennis (in the good weather) and volleyball.

We have four <a href="http://naperwrimo.org" rel="nofollow">preparatory events coming up</a> in October--watch for the RSVP posts to come; and there will also be a fun kick-off party and pot-luck lunch at the end of October.

Hi! I'm Nikki, 28, from Naperville. This is my second year doing NaNo. This year I am working on planning ahead! This year's novel is about a little girl who whips herself into a religious frenzy after she tries to kill her older sister. I'm excited to write and to meet you guys at the write-ins, though I can't make the planning sessions because of work. Good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone! I'm a newbie, and proud of it! My name is Lauren and I'm doing one of those "rules" and telling as many people as possible about this new adventure in November. I actually just stumbled upon a notice about the Sat. NaNo meeting while looking for the "official" trick-or-treat times (so I don't have dozens of angry kids stomping up and down our front steps on Halloween*).

I was really excited to have discovered this - I feel like it is a whole hidden world of creativity that I had no clue about. I love reading and writing, and this is just the thing I am craving! My mom and I attended the meeting on Sat, and look forward to learning more this weekend. Glad to connect with others in our area. Good luck everyone! Gotta get back to work. Regrettably, my quick mid-afternoon coffee break is coming to an end.

* I still don't have the times for Naperville's Halloween, talk about getting side tracked - haha!!!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi. I am Tim aka tireddadx3 from Sugar Grove. This will be my fourth NaNoWriMo. I have surpassed 50,000 words and 'won' NaNo each of those three years. I have done very little writing since last November so I am hoping that doing NaNo again will jump start things and get me back into a regular writing habit that I can carry forward (I said the same thing last year, but hope springs eternal).

I work as a Civil Engineer. I have a beautiful, talented, and amazingly supportive wife, a son in third grade and three four year old girls in pre-school. I really hope to get out to more events this year (I have yet to make a kick off or TGIO event) but scheduling can be difficult.

I have not completely nailed down my Novel idea or title for this year. I am thinking about a main character who meets a guy he knew a long time ago and they talk about a life impacting shared experience and then he thinks about where his life is at and what if he had done something different back then. Then he is shifted into a parallel/alternate reality where different choices were made and he has to naviagate through multiple realities to get back home. I have muddled visions of him traveling through multiple parallel universes searching for his true self with some negative/evil force or outcome or character fighting him along the way. First time I have written any of my thoughts out... I see I have a lot of prep work left to do.

Have Fun and Good Luck to Everyone!

Hey all! My name is Bob and this'll be my...um...fifth (?) NaNo!

I'm a mainstream fiction writer who just might try some supernatural aspects this year...we'll see how it goes!

When I'm not writing I'm collecting typewriters. Of course, I'm usually using those to write so...

I'm excited to be typin' away again near dear old Naperville (by way of North Aurora - unless I can find someone to sublease my house then I'll be by way of Aurora!)

I'm Katherine, one of the co-MLs. I have found that NaNoWriMo is a great way to get a first draft done, especially if I spend time getting an outline figured out before November 1st, although I've been known to go a bit overboard on that, so I'm still fine-tuning that whole outline thing. This year for a change I worked and reworked a synopsis, mainly because I'm still struggling to come up with a good one for last year's novel.

My novel is about a couple in Door County running a B&amp;B, and their half-French niece and may be titled 'Too Close for Comfort' although I'm still fiddling with the title.

I like to host write-ins at coffee shops, although I don't write much late at night. I'm a morning person.

I have a full-time job, but have saved some vacation days and plan on taking lots of mornings off in November.

Oh, and I actually like revising, so if you'd like to see last year's novel, version 4 or 5 is at critiquecircle.com. My login there is KatWrite.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

I am Roger Lubeck. This will be my eighth NANOWRIMO. Each year I have written a new 50,000+-word novel. The first three novels were a fantasy / adventure trilogy set in the same medieval world. To the Western Border (Book One) is published and available on Amazon. Two of my other novels were science fiction / military stories. Last year, I wrote Bullseye, a noir novel of murder and suspense. It is my most complete novel and will be available on Amazon this month. Each year, I start with only a scene and a character in mind. Personally, I like the freedom this creates, but I have experienced a few false starts. I edit for spelling, grammar, and continuity every day and I may even do some rewriting, but I never find this hurts my word count and it often makes it easier for me to get started on a new chapter or scene. However, I wait until after NANOWRIMO for any serious rewriting. This year I may write a sequel to Bullseye because I like the dark nature of the main character, but it is still early. Good luck to everyone. Start fast and never look back!

Hi! My name is Kate and I am another Newbie! :) I am very excited to do NANOWRIMO. I sometimes have issues completing my writing as I can't turn my internal editor off and I find my self repeatedly editing the same few pages. I am hoping that the time constraints of NANOWRIMO will force me to finish the story without too much worrying about the editing.
I am a little nervous about finishing the word count with a full time job and an attention demanding 6 year old. I'm hoping to attend at least one of the Write-ins to get a break from the distractions at home. I did attend the Prep Session on Saturday and really enjoyed it. I'm planning to go to all three.
I like to write YA fantasy and urban paranormal. My story for this year is about a teenager who finds out her childhood imaginary friend, isn't actually imaginary after all.
Good luck everyone!!

Hey, I'm Robin. This is my first NaNo, even though I've known about it for years.

My story is about a girl who travels through time using a magical watch that she inherited from her grandmother.
I am going to be very busy in November, so writing 50,000 words will be a challenge because I will have an hour long musical practice every day, I will have piano, I have a school trip for three full days, and my birthday's towards the beginning of the month! And, for adults, that might not seem like a lot, but for a student IT IS.

Good luck everyone and I hope to see you at planning sessions!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi, I'm Joe AKA The Corrupted Flame. This will be NaNo number nine for me. I'm generally a fantasy writer, though I have ventured into sci-fi and superhero type stories on occasion. Of those 8 other NaNos, I've successfully completed two. (Though one of those two years, I did finish two separate novels.)

I have no idea what I'm writing this year. The only thing that's crossed my mind so far is reimagining one of my stories from a previous NaNo.

Of course, I'll have my work cut out for me, since I'll be out of state for four days this November. And I'm certain while I'm there, I will have no time to write. So here's hoping for the best.

Hi all, I'm Debbie, aka Tyrannosaurus Regina, back for the sixth time this year. I've done and won the last five years only with the help of the region's wonderful online tools and support. This year is going to be a challenge since I'm starting a (very) new job and I'll have less time to check in on the forums. As usual, I know I won't be able to make any of the events, but there's always the wordcount graph (*thank you, Tim*). My stories bounce back and forth between action/adventure and sci fi, and this year hopefully the two will integrate successfully with my Star Pirates inspired effort.

Best wishes to all this coming November for success, however you may define it. See you all on the forums.

This year, I'll be writing about a spoiled, rich duchess and her butler's son getting cursed by a necromancer (er, or something like that!). I'll be traveling during the month of November, so I really need some focus to get it done. Hoping to attend some of the group sessions to meet you all!

Hi Everyone!
I’m Kirsten, known as Larkk in Nanowrimo-land. This will be my third Nano, and I wouldn’t miss this for anything.
I have a story that has been stewing and bubbling since this summer that I am itching to start writing. Those eighteen days until November 1 can’t go by fast enough! Of course, I will try to do a bit more planning than I have in the past years, but either way, I am so ready to lose myself in the whirlwind of words that is Nanowrimo.

The story is something of an epic fantasy with a bit of sci-fi thrown in, kind of like what might happen if you crossed a bulldozer with a t-rex, and the hero main character has been pestering me of late to just start writing already.

I can’t wait to see everyone at the write-ins. I’ve still got the purple MacBook— and the music addiction, so I’ll probably have headphones on, but I'm always happy to talk writing or take a cookie break.

Hello, hello, dahhhlings!

I'm Heather, sometimes known as AmaranthMuse or the inscrutably fine handwriting spilling across a nametag in front of my laptop with the distinctive golden Japanese woodblock print cover. (Could I string any more adjectives together? You bet!) During the month of November, I become a regular fixture in Caribou coffeehouses and isolated in my own little fantastic world except when plot bunnies and word wars rear their head. This will be my third (!) year of active participation with the NaNo group, though the siren song of writing has called me since I was small and this particular wondrous adventure on and off for several years. I also belong to our year-round writing group, The Journey.

You might know me as the girl typing at a blazing(ly loud) speed to Schubert or Liszt, the brunette who kept offering spices and herbs as prizes last year at the Caribou write-ins, or not at all and wondering why I'm only sporadically showing up. I've since moved to Michigan to start a new job but I am committed to participating, starting with a presentation this weekend (eep!) and hopefully making some appearances throughout November as my schedule, progress, and weather allow. I'll definitely be there at the end of the NaNo party, though! :D &lt;3

Hello,

I am askeladd, hailing also from Elgin ~ This is my third attempt at NaNo; previous times I was unable to complete, although at least last year I managed to get farther in word count than in my first year.

I've had a basic idea for my novel since early summer, but I haven't had time to flesh things out as much as I'd like prior to Nov. 1. My story is about a black sheep in a family, and the events leading up to the estrangement. For the format of the novel, I plan to start each chapter off with a pair of letters exchanged between two sisters, and the remainder of the chapter will bring the letters to life, so to speak.

I had planned on writing this one story I've been trying to figure out for a few years for nano, but this summer a new story idea hit me and while it's not the most original idea in the world (nothing ever is), I'm super excited to write it!

My story is about a teen who's siblings disappeared through a magic portal 12 years ago leaving him behind in foster care.
Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hello, all!

I'm Squiddish, or Katherine, and I live way out in the boonies. Also known as Sugar Grove. I've excited to be back in the game this year and hopefully make it in to some write-ins and all that fun stuff, despite having quite the hectic schedule. (Writing not included.)

I've only 'officially' done NaNo once, and won with 25 words over the bar and like... three hours to go. When I did it the following year, I didn't put any effort at all into it and rather, just kind of forgot about it. But this year will be different. I plan on cranking this baby out because it's a story I've had in mind for a long time and I absolutely love the characters to death.

For my novel, the characters and their stories unfold as they're each faced with a difficult decision and one inescapable question with horrible consequences either way: life or death?

The novel's going to touch on several issues through these two, including fear, control, fate vs free will, and nature vs. nurture... I plan on putting my characters each in their own little room--for one, a hospital waiting room. The other, tied to a chair in pitch darkness. And seeing where it goes from there... it should be interesting, since I've never attempted something quite like this before, always opting for... you know... options with scenery and things of that nature. But it should be really interesting and i'm excited to get started. Just me, the characters, and a whole lot of inner conflict to work out.

I look forward to meeting you guys through the write-ins... some of you I already know, but that's alright. ;D Even if you don't know me.... I know you...

Buh-byeee.... mwhahaaha....

No, no. I kid.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi. I'm "sonofjohn" and this is my first NaNo. I don't have specific plans, but I do have several story lines that I've beening meaning to flesh out for the last 20 years. Hopefully, they will provide enough material to reach the 50K goal. Usually, they pull elements from the fantasy genre: epic quest, good vs. evil to save the world, swordfights, conflicted heros, superwarriors.

This year, I decided to stop procrastinating and wondering "could I?" and actually do it or not do it.

Needless to say, story- and novel-writing is completely orthogonal to my day job.

Hallo all, I'm Cameron. I was part of this region last year, and this is my third year of doing NaNo. I hope to be able to attend some of the events, but since I'm up in Aurora due to school (anyone know anyone who attends IMSA? If so, tell me. I want to hunt them down) I might not be able to. I intend to win this year, but November's going to be one hell of a month. I've got artwork to do for an event, all my schoolwork, a 36 hour straight math competition....no sleep for me!

My novel's based off this dream a friend of mine had...terrible dream, it was. Basically, everything gets nuked. And then it's really bad. And stuff.

*doesn't really have all this planned out*

Hello! I'm Teresa and while I live in Plainfield, I go to school and nano in Naperville! My dad and I started doing this five or six years ago. Now it's just me, myself, and whoever I can drag along to join me!

While I usually try for Fantasy novels, I decided to try a Historical Fiction/Sci-Fi novel this year and have been working on the research through October. This years novel is based off of Graham Hancock's research on a civilization he believed to have existed in the year 10,500 BC. The story jumps back and forth between present day archeologists and astronomers - as lead by Dr. Hal Galvin - then turns to the people of the ancient civilization themselves living their everyday lives - as told from the point of view of a young girl name Fifika.

Hello everyone, My name is Jill and this will be my third time doing NaNo. I was not successful either of those attempts, but I was in grad school and working full time which made it difficult. No grad school this year so third time is the charm right?

I have two ideas for a story this year and think I will go with a ghost story set on a horse farm. A man, his wife, their college age son and eldery mother move into an old farm house. The family buys some horses and something begins spooking the horses. That is all I got so far, but it is a start.

Hopefully I will make it out to some events, because it would be nice to meet other people doing this.

Have fun everyone !!!

Hello! :) I'm Susan, and I live in Downers Grove, although I was a Naperville resident for ten years!

The last couple of years have been topsy turvy, but I've atttempted NaNoWriMo many times. I think I've won it once or twice. I'm hoping this year will be a good one!

I have been mulling over a time travel story involving the 1893 Columbian Exposition for a long time and hope to start on it this year. I've an idea to include a modern steampunk society with the Exposition and include murder, since I'm always up for a good murder mystery. We shall see how it works out. :)

I am hoping to come to some of the sessions this year since I FINALLY have a laptop (yay!). I've missed the first two prep sessions because of travel and work conflicts, but I am gearing up to come to the next one! :)

Good luck to everyone and I look forward to getting to know you guys (whether in person or virtually)! :)

Hey guys!
I'm Clearly_Insane_87 from Minooka.
I've been doing Nano for a couple of years but haven't really spent much time interacting with all of you lovely people. I hope to change it this year. I love Nano because I love the race of it. I've been writing since I was very little and I am so glad to have this! My story this year should focus on motorcycles, bars and the drama that happens when you become a "grown up"...unless I completely decide to write something completely different by November. I have no real control over my muses. We all know the books write themselves.
Feel free to add me. I could use more writing buddies.

My name is Victoria and I also live in Downers Grove. I'm a graduate student at Dominican University in River Forest, where I am working on my Masters in Library and Information Science. I currently work at a public library in the south suburbs. It's a long commute, but I love my job. I've participated in NaNo before, but I've never met the 50k goal. I often complain about how working full-time and going to school leaves me no time to write, but I decided that I need to start making time for it. After all, it's not like my life will ever be less busy, at least not in the foreseeable future.

My novel this year will be a fantasy adventure about a group of heroes attempting to keep a power-hungry lord from unleashing a chaos god upon the world. I've been having a lot of fun world-building for this one, and I think maybe that's why I like fantasy so much. The possibilities are nearly endless. It started as a little seed of an idea about a creator with no paternal love for his creation and grew into this really big monster of a plot.

I'm a newbie! I had heard of NaNoWriMo before, but I always remembered about it at the end of November. This year, I'm ready to go!

I was glad to have attended the prep session on 10/15, and I feel very energized and ready to take on the NaNoWriMo challenge. I am telling lots of friends about it, so they'll keep me honest and keep me writing. I expect I'll be burning the midnight oil to get it done, but fortunately I love coffee.

This is the first time I'm describing my novel premise to anyone, so feel honored as you read this. Even my husband doesn't know:

A college student in need of money takes on a lucrative job as a personal assistant to a wealthy, older gentleman. Only after signing an unbreakable contract does he discover that his new employer is a 200-year-old vampire. Life-changing and life-threatening consequences ensue as he becomes entangled in his employer's dark family history while still trying to earn his degree.

I've got a good chunk of the book planned out in my mind, though I'm still not sure about the ending. Hopefully it'll unfold as I get going. Happy writing to you all! Hope to see you at some write-ins.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hello! My name is Linda and this is my sort-of second NaNo. I found out about NaNoWriMo when I saw a blurb in the Naperville Library newsletter last year about mid-November and figured, "What the heck." It was a dismal failure ending in only a couple thousand words, but that's a couple thousand more than I would have had! Last year I was going to write a novel about a DES daughter and her path to parenthood (titled DESpair). While it's a subject I'm passionate about, this year I've had a couple other plots needling at my psyche.

I've settled on writing about a girl growing up in the mid-40's/50's in a small Midwestern town. She marries her high school sweetheart to get away from home and travels the world with her military husband. In the end the husband is not who she thought he was and she divorces him, moves to the big city and becomes a secretary. In a very cliche move she falls in love with the (unhappily) married boss. After many conflicts (her family, his mother, the soon-to-be-ex wife, all their friends), they beat the odds and find happiness and a life together. I believe I will end with their wedding but that remains to be seen.

I guess I'm "breaking the rules" a bit since this is a semi-biographical but I will be taking many literary licenses with the characters. But this will be an "easier" story to write than the other one that's really been pulling at me. That is a story my mother told me about how, during WWII, she used to see the "feds" in their black sedans parked on the streets in her home town with wires running to the phone lines. They didn't attempt to hide the fact that they were listening in on conversations hoping to hear something incriminating and/or anti-American. And how the feds had every reason to be watchful of the people in their mainly German town. She would see her neighbors openly "goose-stepping" in the fields in military drills.

But I think I'll save that story for next year when I have more time to research the times and subjects.

This year, as I said in my profile, while I may not be actively employed, I made the decision to go back to college and take Web Programming courses. I thought they'd be a piece of cake given my programming background, but they're kicking my in the rear! Most days spent at my computer are writing code or reading the 1100+ page text book. When I'm not doing that I'm sending out resumes and applying for various jobs. So I'm going to dive in and participate anyway! At least this time around, if I'm up until the wee hours of the morning, after I get my 12 year old twins (turning 13 in November!) off to school I can drop back into bed and pass out for a couple more hours, instead of nodding off while I'm at work. My mother thinks I'm crazy and biting off more than I can chew. I'll show her! &gt;:D

I am a counselor by training and within the last year left my counseling practice to start out on my own working with parents as a coach/consultant. I am also homeschooling my 12 year old...who, by the way, is the reason to commit to NaNo this year. He will be participating this year with his English Co-Op Class and I decided to write right along side him.

I have no idea what my novel will be about but I have a couple days to decide...right? My son is very excited to be participating and has his fantasy/sci-fi plot taking shape. However he won't be participating in the forums because I'm one of those mean moms who follows the rules set out by gmail, facebook and other forums not allowing anyone under 13 to participate in social aspects of the internet... (I know....call the authorities!)

Well, it seems like there's a couple of newbies out there, so I suppose I don't feel quite so terrible adding myself to that unfamiliar bunch. I'm Devon, and I'm an alcoholic. Oh, sorry, wrong group: I'm Devon and this is my first NaNoWritMo. I'm a 16 year old junior in highschool (witness me bowing down before your superiority in age and wisdom) and can only pray my writing isn't half that bad. It's better to degrade than to be narcissistic, no?
I hope to get my contemporary-sci fi-horror-supernatural spawn of a novel off the ground, having been preoccupied with a prior novel for over five years. I need a serious change of pace! I think I've a solid beginning, it's just the in-betweens I need to figure out. I'm hoping a time pressure might give me the kick I need.
A short summary of the plot: a fourteen year old prestigeous girl from Georgia joins up in the United State's 2nd civil war, where the east fights the west who have created demonic-like beasts from extraterrestrial materials found in Roswell, NM. It's a lot about breaking out of the shell she's been encased in (of upper class white society, the cream of the crop) and how she goes about once she finds herself naked (metaphorically, of course).

So nice to meet you all :)

hi! my name is rachel, and i'm sixteen, and i live in a town over from naperville. this is my third year doing nanowrimo, but i've never actually finished it before. usually i get distracted by school, and i give up.

i know how to use proper capitalization, but i just don't really like doing it. i have an unhealthy addiction to smilie faces, and i struggle with picking favorites. however, my favorite movie ever is the phantom of the opera. a+ movie/book/musical/etc. anyway.

my novel is a real life story about a girl who struggles to find herself in her town~. i'm not exactly sure how else to describe it, to be honest, but my novel synopsis is...

Kaelin Wellmen is almost absurdly normal. Her life is normal, her family is -- almost -- normal, her school is normal; she feels as if she was doomed to live in a perpetual state of normalcy. This is, of course, until Spring Break comes around, and a group of tourists come through, ready for a wild week of parties and fun.
Nathaniel Phillips, a stereotypical island tourist, decides that Kaelin Wellmen is exactly the change he needs from his everyday life. Kaelin is thrilled to finally be a part of something, but to actually be someone, she'll have to escape her personal bubble, and maybe go against some of her own personal beliefs to be someone different.

so yes! i'm hoping to attend some of the write-ins, or at least do something relatively social so i don't have to sit locked up in my room typing. (8

Hi, I'm 'Reader Dreamer' but you fellow Illinoisians get to call me Chloe if you wish. I'm 19 and felt seriously young skimming these introductions...until I read the last few posts. Now I don't feel so alone anymore. Anyways, I don't actually live in Naperville, but it's the closest thing to where I'm at.

Since everyone else is doing some summarizing of their novels, I guess I shall too. My novel takes place in an urban fantasy setting - no alternate universes or alternate Earth. But it will have mythology and religion mixed in there. I'm planning to have Rumpstiltskin, Pandora, and the Devil make appearances, not to mention vampires, dhampirs of my own design, and three witches who are my main characters. The key to this novel is that one of my witches is hard of hearing like me. I wanted to write a novel about a character who has hearing loss since there aren't that many novels like that out there. So yeah.

I'm a NaNo Newbie, and I can't believe I haven't done this before, since I have always wanted to write a book. Better late than never, I guess!

Hi, everyone! My name is Mary and I live in the Southwest suburbs, but I trek up to Naperville a lot during November for the great group of NaNo-ers. This will be my fifth year participating in NaNo. I've won every year I've participated, but that doesn't mean the stories were any good. This is only my third year as a part of the NaperWriMo community, but I've found that the write-ins and sense of community really help me. This year, I've been interning in Chicago and this means I have a monthly train pass to the city. Because of this nice little coincidence, I'm going to try to make it to some of the write-ins in the city -- exciting!

My novel this year is about a group of people who have extraordinary abilities and their quest to find out how they got that way. I've been watching a lot of "The X-Files" in the past four months, so that's definitely influencing my novel idea this year. I'm nervous, but also excited -- the usual NaNo emotional cocktail!

Good luck, everyone!

Hi! I'm Louisa and I'm sure eventually I'll get used to the new site layout O_o

I'm from Lisle, but currently at school in Minnesota so mostly I'll just be with you guys in spirit (i.e. not there) during events. Aside from the obvious reading/writing interests, I also knit, play the viola, volunteer extensively at my local humane society, and run. I have a half-marathon this November and will also be working on two research papers in addition to my regular classwork so this should be quite interesting!

This will be my sixth (?) NaNo, I believe. I almost always write Fantasy, sometimes with a little sci-fi mixed in. The one year I tried to do straight contemporary fiction I did not do so great and ended up with a story that I didn't even like very much. I may try that again someday but not this November. I'm still hammering out plot details but I'm sure they'll fall into place (I am often more of a pantser than a plotter...)

I look forward to getting to know you all :) Happy almost-November!

Hello everyone!
I'm Jennifer, and I live waaaaaay far out in Sandwich, IL. I'm actually closer to the DeKalb region, but I don't think that was a region back when I started, so here I am in Naperville.
I've been participating in NaNo since 2005, and I've won every year (twice one year, which I've sworn never to do again), bringing my novel count to 7.
I'm considering sitting this year out, due to some personal issues that have reared their ugly head the last couple months. While my husband is encouraging me to try and bull through everything and participate, I'm not sure I have the focus or drive needed to hit my daily goals.
I can't make it to the kickoff, but hopefully I will see you during some of the write-ins, or at least in the Jabber chat, and hopefully the TGIO party.
If I don't participate, I'll be cheering everyone on from the sidelines. Go team go!

I haven't been around these parts in a few years, but I am excited to be back and SERIOUSLY hoping to squeeze this into my overscheduled life because I heart this place.

In a suprise move-- to myself as much as anyone-- I will be writing YA this year. Who knew that was coming?

I just filled out the author bio thingy on my profile, so I feel a bit odd writing more along the same lines here. But I am delighted to see familiar faces. And wondering whether I can jabber from my ipad. And if can remember what the heck my account for that was back in 2007. *snort*

Hi, I'm Judy from Willowbrook, and this is my first NaNoWriMo attempt. I have no idea what my story is about, but I know the two main characters and several of the minor characters pretty well. They have been living in my head for quite a while, so I'm going to start typing and see what they have to say.

I will rarely be able to get out of the house to join in the meet-ups, as I am a caregiver to a relative, but look forward to hearing all about them.

I'm stockpiling the Halloween candy and coffee, and starting the countdown to Tuesday.

I'm Haley. I'm from Warrenville and I go to COD. I've been trying to write a book since I was 14. I have yet to finish one, but I do intend to finish my Breathless 1 book in a few years (or sooner) and maybe try to get published. I really care about this story, and I feel like I can't finish another book before I finish that book. I heard about this Nanowrimo first from the author Julia Karr who wrote XVI after starting it for Nanowrimo. A classmate name Sae mention it again a few days ago and I decided to try it. I'm not sure how it works. I heard that you're only supposed to pick a character and a setting and go from there. That it's not supposed to be based off of a pre-existing story you're working on.
I only write YA paranormal/fantasy/sci-fi w/romance. It's a great, popular genera, and it's all I like to read, so I write it. I've read 115 book so far this year according to my shelfari status. All those book are YA, and I'm intending to read alot this month too (I'm also a book blogger/reveiwer), so I'm not sure how much commitment I can give to this (especially with school work and art projects and job searching....btw: Does anyone know what store are hiring for part time around the area? I'm trying for Meijers and other big stores for seasonal).
Well this intro was overly in dept. lol.

I'm Adam from Bloomingdale. This is my first time with NaNoWriMo - I almost went for it last year but backed out at the last minute (and am plenty nervous this time 'round too). But, I've tried writing a version of my book three times now, once getting more than 100 pages in before stopping.. so I know this is something I really need to do. Just hope I can barrel forward and win! It's putting aside the "make everything perfect and sensible NOW" mentality that will be tough.

Hi! I'm Sarah (sari_anne). This will be my fourth attempt; my first and only win was in '09. I have no idea what I'll be writing this year. I threw my initial idea out the window on the drive home from the kick-off party today. Lots of fun meeting people there, and I hope to see some of you at future events. Also, that sausage-pasta-veggie soup was super delicious, whoever made that...

I typically write pretty straightforward literary fiction, but I think it'd be fun to try a bit of paranormal or maybe mystery...gaaahhh...good thing I have all weekend to just let the inspiration flow, right?

I live in Aurora and in the past have done a lot of writing at Four Beans coffeehouse, Graham's, and the Caribou on Randall, so if anyone would like to meet up at any of those places, let me know! I have a weird work schedule, so my writing times tend to be all over the place. I have an adorable and needy dog that is very jealous of my laptop, so I will definitely have to leave home to be productive for long stretches.

Hello everyone! I'm Steve, and I discovered something deep and meaningful in NanoWriMo 2010. I found that I am a slow, methodical writer, and when I try for speed, I suck worse than a drooling infant.

This is truly a crucial self-revelation. It's right up there with finding out that, although my hands are like two catcher's mitts and my musical ear is made of a tin pie pan, I can strum an electric guitar to Bob Marley's "Jammin'" and the neighbors don't call the cops.

So, I encourage everyone to enter NanoWriMo with the zeal of a longshoreman hitting the seaport with a fistful of cash and a lump in his jeans. You will uncover something about yourself from the endeavor. Hopefully your "something" is more successful than my "something".

The Forum for Naperville is an absolute motivator for all forms of written art. Katherine, Dean and, especially, Tim, work like one-armed TSA agents to make Naperville the pinnacle of Nanowrimo elegance. I, like the other 1400+ Naperville area members, am here to bask in the glow of the fine spirit and helpful nature of my fellow MLs and writers.

I may come and cajole a couple of you at a write-in or something. I appreciate Naperville WriMo.

Sincerely, Steve from Geneva, IL Cheers to all.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hello everyone! I'm Rachel, and this is my second NaNo, though I've *almost* participated every year for four or five years prior to my first real attempt last year. Anyhow, I'm from Aurora. Due to a rather crowded schedule, I don't know if I'll attend any of the write-ins--last year, they always seemed to be scheduled at my workplace (the Eola library) during the times I was working, which was not helpful. In other unnecessary news, this will be my first year using a program developed for noveling (Yarny), rather than the ubiquitous Microsoft Word. This will hopefully make it feel less like work or school or something.

Speaking of school (and work), I also teach homeschooled students, and a number of my students will hopefully be participated in the YWP of NaNoWriMo. Extra credit all around! And it's something I don't actually have to grade or even read--how absolutely lovely!

As far as plot summer goes, I do sort of have a plot. I'm being a moderate out-of-copyright infringer, as I'm going to loosely base my novel on Jules Verne's Michael Strogoff, though with a shiny, new post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian setting. That will hopefully take care of my perennial "how the heck do I end this blasted thing" dilemma, which has been the bane of my creative existence. I honestly can say that I've never actually ended any fiction in my life (not counting school-assigned short stories under 5,000 words), so this could be a major accomplishment. We'll just have to wait and see . . .

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hello! My name is Lisa. Or TogetherAgain. Or "hey you." Whatever you want to call me.

I live in Gurnee, and I have to say, the kick off event yesterday was DEFINITELY worth the hour drive, so I guess I'll be coming in for some write-ins, too. I recently graduated from ISU with a degree in English, which means I don't have a job and I'm living with Mom and Dad. I figured this was the perfect year to try NaNoWriMo. I've heard about it for years, but I could never remember which month it was, and then when I figured out it was November I couldn't believe anyone who was in college would attempt it because November is a month of death by deadlines. No such excuse this year.

Perhaps I sound naive, but my main concern for this, my first NaNoWriMo, is not being able to reach 50,000 words. Partly because of the unemployment thing, but also because I've probably written about that much in a month with Muppet fanfiction. (I am obsessed with the Muppets. New movie coming to theaters November 23. I don't expect to write much that day. I will be spending most of it in the theater.) I'm more concerned about being able to write 50,000 words OF THE SAME STORY. I'm not usually very good at staying focus--BUNNY!

*cough* Erm... I was saying. I have my story pretty well plotted out, along with the kingdom it takes place in and the four surrounding kingdoms. Usually, that's what slows down my writing--I need to know EVERY possible detail just to figure out an entirely unimportant character's name, and I can't write one sentence more until I have named that entirely unimportant character. So I did all of that ahead of time--or at least, I HOPE I've covered all of it. I now know the name of the wife of the crown prince of the kingdom to the west, so... Hopefully that's it.

And now, I'm just excited to start writing! Is it November yet? Is it? Is it? Huh? Is it?

Hi,

I'm Cindy and this is my first attempt at Nanowrimo. My friends have done this for several years and I'm excited about doing this. I've written books before but never actually put a real time line on them. Since it's around Christmas I've decided to get in the spirit and try another Christmas story. As a panster though we will never know where my characters are going to take me. Hope they take me on fun month long journey. I can't wait to start writing especially since a part of the story is chomping at the bit to get writing.

Happy writing everyone,

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Buongiorno! (Just thought I'd be different)

No, I'm not Italian but I feel as if I should be. I'm Coleen (couldn't get any less Italian, huh?) and this is my second year. I surprised the heck out of myself (and isn't that a nice thing to do!) by completing almost 52,000 words last year. I now am the proud owner of one proof copy of a glossy paperback with my name on it. Talk about a life-changing experience!!

Since I've just returned from an amazing three week trip to Europe, I've decided to use my travels to write in a completely new genre this year. Last year's book was about a year in the life of a family whose oldest daughter is battling an eating disorder. As you can imagine, it wasn't the happiest experience writing it, re-reading it or editing it so this year I'm doing something fun. I'm going to try to write a Chick-Lit novel about a groomless bride going on a three month honeymoon alone. I have never tried to write anything remotely like this, so it should be fun (and, who knows, maybe even marketable).

I want to thank Tim, Katherine and Dave for all the hard work they do to support all of us who attempt this insane challenge. You're the best! And good luck to all the newbies. If a life-long procrastinator like me can do this, ANYBODY can! Hang in there, keep writing even when you don't have a single idea in your head, and magic can happen!

This year my novel will be for adults. I am "pantsing" it this year, which is a new strategy for me, as I normally plan my novels.

Good luck to everyone!

This is my third year at Nano. And it will also be my first year attempting it with a job. I don't have high expectations actually. And I still have no plot. I do however have lots of names :P Which is a change from last year when I started writing with none of my characters names picked out!
Here's to us all making it!"

Uh yeah I might be panicking HUGELY right now and now I'm stressing about how to properly spell the infinitive of panicing and whether "panicking" is an infinitive or not and these are things I really need to not be thinking of while writing my novel ASK QUESTIONS LATER right?

Anywho no one's gonna read this so I can ramble my panic out :D

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi Everyone!
Joining the party a little late, just made the decision to try my first NaNo about an hour or so ago. I'm not sure if this is something I'll be able to do, but I feel I'm just competitive enough to push my self to finish. Finishing is the hard part for me. I love to write and always have a problem knowing when and how to end my stories. I've never attempted something so long before. Mainly shorts and some fan fic, so this is going to be interesting. For now, I'm calling my novel a romantic-suspense. It involves some undercover agents and gangs, drugs and firearms and of course the romance part. I've been kicking the idea around for a while and just decided now is the time! So I've worked out the first 3 or 4 chapters in my mind (which I never pre-plan a story) and found my first "bump" in the story line (total didn't see it coming!) and I'm thinking "Ok, now what are you going to do?" and I've realized, this is right where I want to be. Flying by the seat and just letting it flow. Wishing everyone a successful month!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi, all. Katherine, thanks a gazillion for your email. I have been writing--actually pulled off about 150 days straight, writing every single day, with friend, Laura, from ChicagoNano. Then, well, I petered out. But, I have been dowsing in short stories, and even joined a writer's group in St. Charles (if anyone is in the St Charles area and wants to know about it, meets twice a month, fantastic people, many published, Nanomail me). So, thanks, Katherine for the shot-in-the-arm, and my goal is to write daily and have a polished short to present to my St Charles group by Dec 1. Not exactly Sticky Note Empire, but it'll have to do. As J.D Salinger once said of himself, "I'm more a sprinter than a distance man," and I suppose I'm of a similar ilk. But, I can still sit back and enjoy watching the lean, mean distance machines, like Katherine and Tim and the other winners, bang out the marathon. I appreciate your encouragement, Katherine, and for those that don't know Katherine yet, let's just say she practices what she preaches and that word count bar flies off the end of the scale like a rocket across the Bonneville salt flats. If you watch Katherine's word count bar closely enough, like the minute hand of a grandfather clock, you can see it moving. Like, constantly. I swear! Warning: watch it too closely and you'll wet your pants. I know.

Coleen, my dear friend, I think you've got something special and could write that novel, and will write that novel, and it's all about keeping the steam after Nano, with which I will help you. Hope to see you at a write-in.

Tom and all the rest, see you at a write-in. Cheers, and (gazes at watch)...bang the keys in 120 minutes. Looks like loads and loads of swell writers in this year's bunch, based on the Intro thread. Steve

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hello fellow WriMo's!
I am so happy to be here again! This will be my second NaNoWriMo, and I am both amazed and excited that it is November again!

My name is Kim (KimOEsq is my handle) and I am from Darien. I have always been a voracious reader and a few years ago decided that I wanted to write a book. A friend of mine introduced me to NaNoWriMo last year, and I've been a writing as regularly as I can ever since.

This year I am hoping to do a horror/vampire/historical fiction piece, but I have noticed that once I start writing (or doing anything considered a creative outlet) it just starts to flow and I don't always know where my characters will actually end up. Which is a good thing, I think. So, we will start by placing my future novel in that category, and I shall update it as necessary.

Also as sort of a personal challenge, I am going to try and work on dialogue development. It is something I have struggled with as a writer and I want to use this November as a nice big canvas to see how this can improve.

I look forward to seeing you all at write-ins and good luck on your writing journey!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi, I'm Sarah (DaphHime) and this would be my fourth NaNo. I'm from Villa Park, IL which is somewhat close to Naperville I guess. I last did this about two years ago but never got the chance to do so due to college. Now that I'm on a short break from school due to financial reasons, I have some time to put into this.

Sadly I've never completed a novel and I only vaguely remember the ones I did do. My first one was a type of urban fantasy, second was more of a straight up fantasy with some romance thrown in, and the third was a fan fic. This year I'm doing a modern fantasy/horror novel. Well more suspense than horror and the fantasy is more of the supernatural kind. It starts off as the basic "young adults go on camping trip then something horrible happens" type plot, with a bit of a twist. Lots of nerdy references too to my nerdy life. Expect a lot of genre savvy people in this one.

I'm also more of an artist than a writer (my major is graphic design) but writing helps and inspires me in my artwork. Plus I've always wanted to write a comic, or at least make up characters and a plot for one.

I don't know what I'm going to write. I never know what I'm going to write, so there's no point in asking me until halfway through the month. I usually write at the Arcedium Coffeehouse in St. Charles, and the Panera Bread on Randall, as well as Graham's in Geneva, so if you're around, give me a ring and I might be able to join!

Looking forward to getting to know all you great people.

Hello!
My name is Vivian but my nano-hook is Black-Betty54.
I am a 28 year old Wife and new mommy from Naperville.
I joined Nano in 2007 but I tripped at the finish line, so this time I'm going to take preventative measure to make sure that doesnt happen again.

I usually write horror or supernatural books and short stories but this year my husband challenged me to think out of my element. So i decided I would try an indie-style romantic comedy. That is FAAAR out of my element but I can't lie and say that the idea of it doesnt have me excited.

I write at home most of the time. But thats only because I had NO IDEA Naperville had so many nano participants and activities. Expect to see me at a few of these write ins!

Good Luck Everyone!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi I'm Britin and this is my third year, I'm located all the way out in Lockport but I work in Naperville (or Woodridge if your looking for me in the morning) as a early childhood teacher. I finished last year and didn't finish the year before that, I'm doubting I'll finish this year either and I swear that's not a case of being pessimistic either! The day after I finished I severely burned my writing hand with two tablespoons of hot oil, nearly third degree burns. I'm still struggling and I'm an old fashioned writer, everything gets written out by hand then typed up. So that put my book on the back burner and all that junk...

But enough grumbling. I'm an incredibly stubborn Irish woman who figured hey my friends are doing why not me. And no I wouldn't jump over a cliff. Though I might jump into a ball pit at Chuckie Cheese if you gave me enough pixie sticks. Regardless I need to finish this novel and I plan to write in memory of my Mom and my Aunt because they are the two most important women to me.

Thanks, nice meeting you all, I'm off to bother someone else.

Hi!

My name's Becky (Sapphire/Sapphy). I'm 27, and this year will mark my (hopefully triumphant) return to NaNo after a significant break of a couple of years. I've won twice so far, with my best year so far being at just around 75,000 words. It was also the year I decided to up and marry my husband (Joe/Corrupted Flame here on the boards) in the middle of NaNoWriMo. November's going to be a busy month for me with a trip to Vegas next week, so we'll see how things go from here!

My novel this year a fantasy story titled "The Watchtower Lies". I tried an iteration of it one year for NaNo and didn't get past the first thousand words, so I scrapped that and reworked the plot and idea.

My Name is Sarah! I'm 18 and this is my first time out on NaNo! I'm pretty excited. I'm trying to write a fantasy I'm not 100% sure on my title right now it's called Phoenix. I'm from Aurora. :) Pretty busy month ahead of me this year. I'm a senior in high school and very dedicated to the theater program. I have tech week, performances, and then I have to start rehearsal for our winter show.

I'm Barry, a.k.a Finbarr McG. This is my fifth nano.

I write mainstream novels, usually skidding to a halt just past the 50K mark.
It's always an adventure, and fun to see everyone jumping with both hands on the keyboard once again.

I live in the shadow of the overdog (isn't that a cool word? I found it on WordFeud this afternoon) KatherineWriting, who inspires and urges and nudges me to participate.
And it's enough fun that I do seem to keep coming back.

Write on!

Hello everyone,

I am Matt from Bolingbrook. Just signed up for Naowrimo as a last minute thing this evening. I have never written a novel before so I am sort of diving head first into this sort of thing. Excited, terrified and everything in between. WE will see how this goes.

My story is a techno thriller where a Wkipedia type organization has become the destination for information and human history for the world. There are dedicated individuals who curate it, some so dedicated that they are willing to manipulate the real world (murder, corruption etc) to make it match what should be in the "story" on Wikipedia.

Hi all, I'm Robin (and I see I'm not the only Robin this year). I live in Naperville.

This will be my fourth year. I won last year, but not the previous two. I have no idea how this year will turn out. I'm basically using NaNoWriMo as a way to get myself writing again, so I have nothing (yes, you read that right) nothing plotted out. plan is to work on a story already in progress and churn out some short stories as well.

I'm looking forward to attending some write ins... And with any luck, I'll get a plot bunny or two :-)

Hello all. My name is Jennifer (J. Leigh Bailey around here) and this is my 2nd year doing Nano. I started last year but a death in the family derailed the project. My goal in this is to actually FINISH a draft of a novel. I tend to get a few chapters in and lose steam, usually because I've re-read and edited the previous chapters to death. My other goal is to meet area writers and get out of my cave periodically. You'll probably see me at a couple of the write-ins this month.

Good luck to everyone!

My name is Kelly, I'm 22, and this is my first time doing Nanowrimo. I actually hadn't planned on doing it at all but I heard so much about it in previous years from John Green (I'm a nerdfighter wahey!) and I feel as if it stewed subconsciously until today when I suddenly started writing and couldn't stop. Here I am, staring at a story that is supposed to be a page and has now turned into three... how could I not flesh it out all the way and have fun doing it? I'm a unemployed bum so I might as well be doing SOMETHING in between cover letters. :D

You might see me at a write in sometime :)

I am thegrinch and an expert procrastinator. I have started on what I think I am going to write, a mystery/suspense novel and people die. Most of what I write has dead people, don't why but I am not a serial killer so you are safe (from me at least). I have almost 100 words and now debating if I go to the store hoping to snag some marked down Halloween candy or not. Aside from my personal procrastinator skills I have a Psychodog that wants most of my attention when I write. This is my 5th year at doing this. I have hit 50K the first 2 years (once at 11:35PM on 11/30), and not that far the other 3. This was to be the year when I got an outline and character bios done before November 1st, but to stay true to my procrastination...

Okay, I have stalled the last 30 min or so reading posts, etc.

Merry Nano to all and to all a good type. [Sounds better in my head than typed out.]

This is my first NaNo. I'm super excited to participate this year and am determined to finish even if I write the worst book in the world. This year I am hoping to do the same, although I am not as prepared and don't have much of an outline. I also don't have my writing buddy, my 10 year old daughter, who participated in the Young Writer's Program last year and attended the write-ins with me.

Hello!

I am Jessi, from Downers Grove. This is my fourth attempt at Nano. I have never won. Yet.

I didn't have an idea for my novel until last night, when I went online and played with some random generators. We'll see if the idea I had will hold out for 50k words! Huzzah for lack of planning!

The basic story is about a girl who lives with her native, nomadic desert tribe, although the planetary society as a whole is relatively technologically advanced. She discovers she has a rare (and what some think is obsolete) talent for finding water. Unfortunately certain draconian tactics by the urban majority cause her to be taken from her family and placed in a reeducation facility in the coastal cities, where her waterseeking talent is not only useless, but mocked. She finds, however, that the talent has a side effect that may help save the planet. Woo hoo!

Hello,
I am LC. I have been thinking of doing the nano for some years now and this year unlike the previous times I have actually started writing. I have no set plot and I am not sure how my story is going to turn out and ....as long as it's 50,000 words long ...I don't even care. My only plan, so far, is to write and keep writing and save the editing and judging for next month. I am unemployed, by choice - retired, I like to think - so I have time during the day when the kids are at school in-between laundry, cleaning and getting dinner. I also run, but somehow I don't think my story will have anything to do with running. I am an expert procrastinator. That's how I thought of doing the nano for several years and didn't do anything until now.

(And Tim, I know I said I was done, but my best bud in Alabama is an ML this year, as you know, so this time I"m in both this region and in that one.) I've done them starting a week late, one despite a 4-hour (total) commute and full-time job, and one when my mom died on Day 4. If you've tried and haven't finished before, know that it's do-able. It's not about Nobel-worthy art, it's about word count, so do what you have to do: throw in a dream sequence, have your character read his/her mail, detail a phone conversation or driving directions for the character. Whatever gets you over the finish line, it all counts! Good luck everyone!

Hello! I'm Jieshan, and this is my sixth attempt at NaNoWriMo. I still haven't won yet, but this year will be the first time I'm attempting it whilst being unemployed (I've been a housewife ever since we moved to Chicagoland several months ago for my husband's job), so maybe that will help. By contrast, last November, I was in my final semester of library school, working full-time, and doing an internship on top of that, which didn't leave me much in the way of time to write.

I'm writing Torchwood fanfiction this year, because I've learned by experience that I am far more motivated to follow through with that kind of thing than original fiction... why fight it?

Hi!
I'm MarthaJoy coming back for the 2011 November madness. I wrote my 2009 romance novel Patience by the "seat of my pants." The novel needs a massive rewrite job. I haven't done this as I've been finishing up my non fiction history of the West Chicago fire department. This year I followed the advice of Larry Brooks on his storyfix.com website and did some preplanning. What a relief! I now have a direction for my story. I'm writing about Tommy Tiger Cat and how he finds a home.

Hey! Can I claim forum posts in my word count?
I didn't think so. :(
I'm Tomster, from Arlington Heights. I trek to Naperville every November because it's the best region in Illinois. Don't tell that to those snobs from Chicago. We might find our tires slashed. Seriously, this is my fourth Nano with 2 wins under my belt and I owe it all to this region and to write-in's and Starbucks coffee, and maybe donuts.

My stories are contemporary fiction and are relationship driven. This year will be a challenge because I'm less prepared than usual and I'm traveling on business more than I'd like. If I can catch up by the start of week 4 on word count winning will be a cinch. If I don't than all those donuts will have been wasted.

I'm Back - Again

In September of 2006 my daughter challenged me to stop talking about writing a science fiction novel but to sign up for National Novel Writing Month and actually write on. I did and started writing my Legacy Rising series completing 75,000 words on Legacy’s Gift.

I followed this with Legacy’s Dawn (2007), Legacy’s Longing (2008) and Legacy’s Challenge (2009). Last year I took a break and wrote The Unclocked Door (2010), which although in the same “universe” and my Legacy Rising series is not directly related to the others. In the last four years I have completed 100,000 words during Nano and hope to reach at least that many in 2011 when I work on The Legacy Conflict.

In 2010 I experience a major life challenge when my mother died on November 1st and much of the first week of November was a blur of travel to Florida for the funeral. Although I had uneven motivation I did come back, reach my goal and complete my novel.

I’d like to publish, but none of my works are fully edited yet where I would be willing to market them.

I have three adult children and two grandchildren and look forward to passing on a literary legacy born from these annual “thirty days and nights of literary abandon.”

Hello, everyone! I'm Sarah, a 15 year old student (Sophomore in High School), and I'm the biggest fan of writing, it's my passion, it's as simple as that :) Currently I'm writing a book based off of one that I wrote back in seventh grade, I took the characters and the basic idea and changed literally everything else about it. It's going great so far :)
Writing is all that I have been doing for the past four days, heck, I already have almost twenty thousand words. I plan to try to go to at least one or two write in's in the future. :) It's a pleasure to meet all of you. Don't' be afraid to talk to me, although, I do warn you, I'm a little quirky, I like to quote Shakespeare and am literally obsessed with books, that's almost all I talk about (Or martial arts).
I hope to see you all soon! :)

Well, I guess I should introduce myself this year. I'm Carly, I slave away in my retail job, in my spare time I make and sell handmade journals on Etsy and at the One Strange Bird boutique in the Humboldt Park neighborhood downtown, and obviously since i'm here, I write.

This year, I'm writing a prequel/sequel to last years NaNovel. Or, well, I'm rebelling and FINISHING them.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

I think I did this introduction last year, but I never showed my blessed face at any of our regional events, so I thought it might be a good idea to say hello again. This year I plan on making a write in or jabber, even if it means I only manage a drive by mooning. You'll prefer seeing my face, I guarantee you.

I managed to make it over 30K last year, a story I really was jazzed over, but not only lost what was saved to my laptop but also lost the backup due to a zapped thumb drive. There are a few excerpts left that I shared with a blog group. This year, I bought a new laptop, threw away the fifty pound dinosaur I used last year, and am uploading the entire NaNo to my blog. This one will not go away.

This year I am sticking to 1700 words a day and trying to stay ahead. My story is very simple, not all that original -- it's drawn from personal experience with the theme being a man, like myself, who has been fortunate to be granted a one year sabbatical to write the novel he has always wanted to write. He parks himself in a local Panera Bread to write, with his novel eventually turning to what happens as he gets to know the regulars and workers. It shouldn't be a surprise that you will be able to find me writing my NaNo most early mornings at a Panera on Butterfield in Wheaton! Stop by if you want.

I'm a Warrenvillian.

Best wishes to all.

Hi! My name is Sharon and this is my 4th attempt at Nanowrimo. I won twice and didn't make it to the start line the 3rd time. I'm a mother with three kids and a husband and I let their time take over my time last year and am committed to ignoring them for the month of November to get this project underway. My husband always likes my novel ideas, but is more excited to see my consider revising when December 1st hits and actually getting something to have people look at. I have two Nanowrimo books just sitting in my computer. I am behind on word count already, but am dedicating the weekend to making up for lost time.

Oh, I am in Naperville only in spirit as our family relocated to England over the summer. We are only here temporarily for a few years and since I still own a house in Naperville, I figured I could still call it home. I have added the closest region to me here in England to my list, but it's still and hour to get to write ins and I could actually be writing for the 2 hours I would be driving. I guess I'm on my own but like coming to the Naperville region to read that other people are getting things done or hitting walls too. Have fun everyone. I better get back to my novel....

Hi,

For this month I'm Adam1. I live in Bolingbrook. This is my first NaNo. I'm doing this because I needed to jump start my 4th vampire novel in the series. And I will admit having a fan post on my character's blog that if I ended the series the way that the last book ended I would lose a fan...well that was my motivation.

I've been making career choices and concentrating more on my romances because the bulk of my fan base is there. It's not that I've been having problems writing, but I did need something to make me change directions for a a few months.

Good luck to all.

Hey there!

Jaded Block here. I thought I'd checked in on this thread a few days ago, but apparently not. Anyway, I've tossed my hat in the ring with this NaNoThing a few years over the past six or seven, and made my goal each time, although stressfully so. This year is my first year pantsing, and it's going surprisingly well.

I'm going to end up being one of those annoying people who will talk about going to write-ins and other meetings and never actually will due to crippling social phobias. Please bear with me on this!

Yo, I'm Taylor, and it's my first time on here. I had first heard of it from the people of fictionpress but my mom and one of my friends urged me to start this so here I am.
My idea for this story had developed over the summer, while I was staying at Michigan for a week. My little sister and I had sat and talked about the plot and scenes for this story and now I'm finally writing it out. I've only ever once finished writing out a whole story but I never liked it and believed it sucked so I'm hoping this time, if I finish, that I'll love how it all unfolds out.
By now, I'll probabaly just explore NaNoWriMo and....so yeah

I've returned to the Literary Fiction genre but added a little excitement to the extreme character-ing by putting them all through a global pandemic. The great thing about being a writer is that I can do whatever I want to my characters and only feel a small amount of guilt for it :)

Hi, Everyone!

I'm AJ, and although I've already introduced myself on this thread, I've finally (today!) figured out what I'm going to write about this November. On the 5th of November! You can read about it here on my page on the NaNoWriMo website - http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/participants/ajey. Because I don't have a laptop computer, and because of my distance from where the write-ins are being held, I probably won't be able to make any of them. They sound fun, though. (I have participated in them in the past.) But I am looking forward to the TGIO party after I have completed my novel! So I'll see some of the rest of you there!

Hi. I'm Ryan and this is my first NaNoWriMo. I heard about this from listening to Brandon Sanderson's podcast and decided it was what I needed to get me to actually start writing down some of the ideas in my head.

This is the very first story I've ever tried to write. And I'm doing it for NaNoWriMo. Yeah.

So far I'm on track but it's been tough. I probably should have written an outline beforehand but I didn't. I basically had the beginning and ending in my head when I started so it'll be interesting to see if the stuff I'm making up now will get me where I want to be.

I'm Maria and while I call the Chicago Region home, I do like lurking in Naperville ^^. Right now I work as a Nurse Aide in a rehab facility and have been doing so for about 4 years. Working on getting books done as I have put any further schooling out of the picture for the immediate future. And because I work PM shift I don't get to attend a lot of write ins which is a total bummer, but that is what forums are for.

This year I'm writing another book from my vampire romance series. Right now I have no idea where this one is going to fit in number wise, but that is for me to see in December and not worry about now. So far there have been some twists I did not think would happen and I'm quite happy with them. My aim is to be finished NaNo by Nov 16th as I have a convention I'm going out of town for and thus I won't have computer or internet access most of the 5 days I'll be gone. So to avoid the yearly guilt I have dealt with in the past, I want to finish the novel earlier than I have.

Hello from a newbie...albeit joining late

Hello everyone, my name is Leslie and I live and work in the Naperville area. This is my first year actually making it passed the registration part for this. My sister has been asking me to do this for serveral years and I always come up with a fairly lame excuse as to why I could not do it. My sister has participated for many years eventhough she is the mother of 3 and works a really strange schedule. I am the mother of 1 and work a 9 to 5 M-F so all my excuses are lame compared to my sister! All lame excuses are now gone, and I am left with attempting this. As you can see I have registered late, and will now be spending the rest of the month playing catch up to everyone else. (Wish me lots of luck on this!). I am not sure I have fully decided what my novel will be about. I have many ideas in my head that could possibly come together into one novel...or could be the start of the next Twilight or Harry Potter type of series,(not that I think I could possibly write on either of these levels- please excuse my newbie attitude Stephanie and JK...I just think I have too many ideas to push into one novel and still stay on track). I look forward to getting to know all the others in the Naperville area during this November to remember of writing.
Good luck to everyone...happy typing.

Posting so I'm added to that lovely region wordcount graph, since I love that thing! :D

So hello there; I'm Gabi! This is my sixth NaNoWriMo; I've technically only had one win (two years ago), though the year before that I got to 25k in five days before abandoning and I did finish the project later. I'm a senior in high school and currently live in Winfield (though on the Wheaton side of it).

This year I'm technically writing fanfiction, but it's with two characters who have each had one line, and those lines were each one word. It's YA/teen lit, though, and it's one of the few plots I've had I really do like a lot. I'll be balancing all of my college apps and NaNo this November (since I procrastinated), but hopefully that won't stop me! :D

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

I'm Ethan, and this is my first NanoWrimo. I heard about it from a friend in one of my classes, and I'm so happy that I joined in. It's definitely something that I have quickly learned to dedicate my time to, and it has caused me to take my computer to school so that I can work on my novel is Study Hall, before school, at lunch, and after school. I've written several short stories before, but never a full novel like I am in this competition. I usually write in fiction, be it philosophical, adventure, or science-fiction.

This year's novel that I am writing is outside of my comfortable boundaries, and explores various behaviors and side-effects of being thrown into a new setting and being the only thing (besides animals) that exists. It's an adventure novel that isn't necessarily focused on the actual adventure itself, but the underlying meanings behind fairly regular tasks. Once a chance to believe that my main character is not alone, he becomes obsessed by the mystery of this almost ghostly character who never quite reveals himself.

Anyway, I hope to attend at least a few write-ins throughout the month. They really do help boost my word count, as I'm a bit behind at this point.

Ello! I'm SeikaTakaKanata or Lindsay which ever you prefer to call me. ^^ This will be my first time participating in NaNoWriMo and I'm excited. I know I'm a little late, so sorry about that.

I generally like to write action fiction with the occasional fantasy twist thrown in there. This year I'm writing a novel that takes place in the future and was inspired by my history class, surprisingly. I'm actually not sure where I got the idea from but I'm loving it so far! This one may actually be my first novel ever completed.

Hello to everyone. I went through the archives attempting to find my post from last year, but probably missed it, so I'll re-do it for this year. I've been participating in NaNoWriMo since 2006, took a break from it in 2009 due to college being a little insane, and last year, 2010, was my first time that I won in four years of participating. This year attempting to finish the novel that I started last year, and hoping that I can finish the silly thing.

Happy writing to everyone!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi!

I'm MarthaJoy and this is my third year. I wrote a romance novel, Patience, in 2009 (just a hair over 50,000 words) and then flamed out in 2010. (I was trying to write a novel about the future and had done no planning. I couldn't figure out what to do after the second chapter). I'm back this year writing a story about an abandoned tiger cat who finds a home. I also write non fiction and just finished a history of our local fire department out here in the western suburbs.

I'm a little behind on my word count as I had company last week. But I have a plan for my novel this year so I'll get back on track (I hope!)

The COD writer's group sounds interesting. I'm going to check that out as well.

Good luck everyone.

Hello there. My name is Frank and this is my third nanowrimo. I have finished it successfully once and am hoping for a second win this year. I live in Lombard and enjoy writing more than almost anything.

The story I am writing is one I have been thinking of off and on for three or four years and finally decided to pull the trigger on it this year and write it. It is a sci-fi story about a teenage kid sent to exile where he is forced to find a place in a clan for survival against villains, predators, and the elements.

Anyway, I'm a little of a late joiner, but am hoping this is a good motivator to keep me on the right track. Thanks for all the wonderful e-mails and posts. Good luck to all!

Howdy,

I'm Sunny, and I live in the outskirts of Naperville, depending on who you ask.

I've chosen to nano during the worst possible time--meaning I'm extremely busy and have practically no free time whatsoever! But this is all part of the plan. The pressure and structure of nano will balance my life and force me to spend time not thinking about homework (writing=fun relaxing time). The challenge is the actual nanoing part. The trick is to squeeze in some words before school, during lunch, and during homework procrastination time. I'm already thousands of words behind, but this struggle will make "winning" all the more satisfying. :D

My novel: I had a pre-planned idea, but on a whim I've decided to wing it with a different less-thought out idea instead.

May the force be with me.

Hello, everyone.

I'm just getting around to introducing myself eight days in, but it's better late than never (am I right?)!

My name is Amanda, and this is my fifth year attempting NaNoWriMo. Maybe it will be the year I finally win, but I doubt it! I'm in my second year of graduate school, studying political science, and everyone in school knows how messy things get in November. For example, I have two research projects due at the end of the semester (early December). I'm still going to try my best, though, as I have for the previous four years.

This year I am working on this plot bunny that popped into my head this past spring and just wouldn't leave. It's a post-apocalyptic zombie novel, which is a first for me (usually I stay in the high-or-urban fantasy realm). Another first for this novel is the fact that it is a first-person narrative. It's going pretty well, considering how little time I've actually had to work on it.

Hey! My name is tim and I live in Lombard, a little farther than most people seem to be. This is my second year attempting NaNo (the first, I ran out of steam around 20k) and things seem to be going uncommonly well this time. I write my novel in vim, back it up with git, and write over ssh when I'm away.

My novel is about an earth which cheap space travel has mostly left abandoned. The Magic Comes Back, there are Civilized Animals (I'm a big fan of TVTropes), and a character will try to reestablish communication with other towns around the world (just writing this has helped me a ton; I wasn't sure that that would even happen). I I've been derailed by what was meant to be a short interlude about an immortal cat during the Siege of Syracuse.

Some of my favorite authors are Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett (Snuff is waiting in my backpack until I have enough time from writing...), Neal Stephenson (... as is REAMDE) and Ursula K Le Guin. I like computers and punk rock and cooking.

Hi! My name is Cydney and I represent Elk Grove Village. My story is a continuation of a series that I started last year, based on the 60s TV series "Hogan's Heroes." The series is about POWs who run a successful smuggling and espionage/sabotage ring, right under the nose of their Kommandant. This story is a very supernatural one, as I have made all of the characters either werewolves, vampires, and I even introduced a wizard in my last story.

Hello all. I'm Cathy from Roselle.

Hoping to use this month just to get back into the habit, discipline, of writing every day. After only 8 days I find that I don't like my story idea or my characters. So, I'm going to start over and whatever I get done will just have to be OK.

For me, just writing daily is the goal. Perhaps next year I'll feel a little more knowledgable about my story. Having a great time reading the threads and thinking about things.

I heard about NaNo from a buddy of mine and thought it'd be a good opportunity to get some of the ideas in my head out on paper. Liking it so far. I've fallen a bit behind because of unavoidable conflicts, but not too far--it's all good.

My novel, called "Deep", is about a group of scientists working in an Antarctic research station to break through the ice to a subterranean lake. Little do they know it holds a deadly threat.

This year, even though I caught bronchitis at the beginning of the month and lost a week, I am fully committed to finishing. I just passed 25,000 words today so I am finally caught up!

My story takes place 100 years after the world Outside has become uninhabitable to humans. What remains of the human race live inside The City, over 600,000 square feet of connected big box shopping mall, farming on the roof and never setting a foot Outside.

Life is good, and hasn't changed much in generations, until Kara finds a pigeon with a message attached to it's leg. There are others, somewhere, Outside. This revelation will change Kara, and The City, forever.

I hope to attend a write-in soon and I look forward to meeting people!

Hello, all! I did NaNoWriMo during my freshman year of high school in '09, took last year off (and regretted it) and am now doing it again! I go to college now, counting my credits for high school, as I am currently homeschooled (And not doing much better for the workcount than when I was public schooled when I last did it. Silly job that I have now takes up so much time.) Last time, I wrote an absurdist/surrealist story, so this time (being a real story with plot etc) is even more fun! :D I'm writing the book that I've always wanted to read. *epic pose, gaze into the distance*

Hello All!
I'm Art and I live in Naperville. This is my first NaNoWriMo. I came across the NaNo meting at Nichols by accident in October and have been excited to see what I can do.

I'm a big fan of comedy (hence the name ComedyNut). I have actually performed as a Stand up comedian, an improv performer and as an "actor" in murder mysteries. Along with my wife, I've written nine murder mysteries for performance and have also written many custom sales and training shows. I'm a believer that people learn more when they're laughing.

I'm also a fan of mysteries and have been since I was a little reader. Of the classics, you name it and I've read it.

I intend to write a mystery that has some lightheartedness in it--even fun! We'll see how it goes.

I love the idea of just writing and not worrying about editing. Tim (New Mexico Kid) said to just keep writing, no matter what happens.

So off I go! I hope to see you all there at the end!

I am a bit late on this, but I'm Chrissie :) newbie as well.
15 years old, and my first shot at writing anything longer than a short story, but I'm going for it.
Basically, we had to give speeches at the beginning of this year on one word that described us, and my friend gave on on 'Words', and mentioned this site, so here I am.

Basically the novel is just a drama sortof thing about two young men who are thrown into independent life and have to negotiate and make a place for themselves in a cold and traumatizing world.

Don't wanna give away too much, but that's the gist.

I'm a recent graduate and so far haven't found a job to put my new English degree to work, so I figured it was best spent on NaNo. My current novel is about a group of time-traveling Historians who go back in time to study various historical events and people. I've been really enjoying writing this story, because no matter how complicated the time travel gets, it never fails to excite me. But, being me, it will only end in tears. I have set a goal for myself that in the future I will be known as the Joss Whedon of YA fic.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

A little late to the party - well, not on my novel but in introducing myself. I'm Paige, living in the lovely suburb of Glen Ellyn, yet missing my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee - well, at least the weather. I've never done NaNo before and I'm right around 30,000 words at this point, which makes me happy. I've written several novels, gotten stuck in one for the past year (or two), fallen off the sending-out-queries wagon and just generally got lost in the creative writing world. NaNo is helping me find my way.

So glad to be here!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Hi, I'm Ashley aka WhimsicalSnowflake, and I'm a little tardy to the introduce-yourself party because I've been trying to hard to write that introducing myself just slipped my mind!

I'm currently floating around 35k and this is my slowest NaNo ever - EVER - in my three-now-four years of NaNoing because of the school commitments I've had. The school play, which I was producing, went on through the first two weeks and the third week, when I thought I'd be able to catch up, one of the other clubs I'm in kicked into high-gear and knocked me back in the dust again. AT THE SAME TIME, all my teachers decided to give gigantic tests. Same week. And that week's over now, and now it's this week, and I have been a furious writing machine trying to catch up. XD

So this year I'm writing a story called Unforgettable about a girl who can erase things from people's minds. My story has been slightly taken over by my new favorite formerly-supporting-but-now-practically-a-protagonist character, Rosie, and hopefully I'll be able to finish during the long Thanksgiving weekend.

Sorry for being a recluse and not going to the writing events - like I said, it's been really crazy and I've barely had a spare second to breathe this whole month. Assuming all goes well, I'll be able to catch up pretty quickly (I'm within 3k of the target word count, which I think is kind of impressive considering I was about 9k behind last Friday) and maybe next year I'll be better about showing up!

Best of luck to all and happy almost-Thanksgiving!

A really late introduction. I decided this year to do an unofficial "light" Nano as last year proved too grueling for me. I've been aiming for 1000 words a day and so far have had great success with the pace ... enough to progress the story but not so hard I burn out half way through the month. I started up my account and threw in my word count after hearing about your word wars challenge. Thought the extra word count could help give you a boost. Happy Writing!

Free writing critique group open to all writers

For anyone who wants feedback on their writing, the Writers@Work critique group meets 7:15 p.m. first, second and fourth Mondays in the lower level of the College of DuPage Student Resource Center. (We have an abbreviated schedule in December but will be back to full strength in January.) Please email me, cassie67@mindspring.com, for more information.

If you'd like to get on our newsletter list and receive notifications of our meetings, send an email to mudbugg@mindspring.com and put Writers@Work in the tagline.

Writers@Work is open to all writers. In our 16 years of meetings, we've read poetry, screenplays, essays, novels, short stories and more. Many of us are working on novels, and we often discuss writing and publishing issues at the start and end of the meeting.

You don't have to read, but if you'd like to read, bring 6-8 copies to pass out to the group. You'll have 10-20 minutes to read (depending on the number of people reading that night), and then the group will respond with questions and comments. We're not competing with one another, so we try to keep things positive and talk in terms of what we like, what was unclear, and what "bumped" us out of the story.

Good luck to everyone in the final stretch of NaNoWriMo, and I hope to see you at Writers@Work!

My name's Christina. This will be my second NaNo. I tried in 2008 and failed miserably, but this year I've done a heck of a lot better. I kind of feel like my quaint little novel has grown into a monster who will not be satisfied once I hit 50k words. I never thought I'd see the day...It's definitely feels great though.

Hi,

My name is Karen. This is my second year doing nanowrimo. I completed the 50,000 last year, and am on my way to finishing it this year. I actually wrote the 50,000 in two weeks last year, and had no idea that I could write that quickly. Nanowrimo changed the way I looked at my ability to write in general and has helped me in so many ways.

Hello, fellow Nano-ers! My name is Amy, and this is my first Nanowrimo experience. I've had a nagging idea for a young adult novel cluttering my brain for quite some time, so I figured Nano was just the motivation I needed to stop thinking and start writing. The beginning of the month was strong, but eventually my internal editor kicked into high gear (as it so often does), and my progress slowed to a pitiful crawl. My current word count is right around 14,300, a far cry from 50,000. As it is now painfully obvious, sadly I will not be heading to the winners' circle by the end of November. At least I have a start, and I'm destined to complete this thing over the next month or two.

Besides, there's always next November, right? :o)

I know I'm a little late on this, but between writing, feeding my video game addiction, and working for Sears during the Black Friday season, things have been a little busy. I'm Apple Haggis, and this has been my third year participating in and winning NaNo. I was introduced to the whole affair by ThePiratess in 2009, and plan on being an active participant for as long as I have fingers to type with.

My story this year was a zomcom about a very boring accountant who is accidentally raised back from the dead by a very well-meaning voodoo priest in New Orleans. Hijinks ensue when Mortimer (Mort for short) takes a job as a cab operator (since he's technically an illegal citizen) and winds up as his resurrector's getaway driver in a series of misadventures including loitering vampires, rock-and-roll werewolves, ghosts in denial, and an evil scheme to turn Mardis Gras into a zombie revolution.

Also, I actually live in Lafayette, IN, but my ML here this year left me awfully lacking, so ThePiratess twisted my arm to join up with her region. Hope no one minds the intrusion.

HI this is Kat :D
I'm really new to Nanowrimo, literally I just learned about it 2 months before November, so this was my first Nano.
I failed really epically, I had no real plan in mind, just took one of my abandoned Ideas that was left on the side of the road and tried to nurturer it back to health. Unfortunately, it died.
Grim I am, I enjoy books with a horrible ending, like no "and they lived happily ever after' cliche horrible, I mean evil wins and all die. I would really like to join in on stuff with you guys, by next season I want to become a better writer and finish the goal of 50k.
thanks ;D

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Greetings. I'm Bonnie, a lifelong Napervillian recently relocated to Aurora. This is my first NaNo. I'm really not sure how this will go as I'll be out of the country for the first 13 days of the month. I actually leave on the 31st.

As I look through this site, I'm the only one that I see doing a biography. Actually, it's an auto-biography. As a committed Christian, I have been told many times that I need to get my story, my testimony, down on paper. That's why my working title is "Testimonies." God did so many amazing things in my life as He chased me, calling for me to come to Him. So, this is my chance. A time to just sit down and do it. I envision it as sort of a Chicken Soup for the Soul type format, with a whole bunch of short stories strung together.

I believe my time out of the country will end up yielding more material as I'll be on a two week mission trip to India. I'm joining 5 others to present a Life in the Spirit Seminar to pastor's conferences in 2 different cities in India. I'm stepping out in faith, but way out of my comfort zone as I go to teach to pastors who have much more time in relationship with God than I. It will be an exciting time, and one which, as I said, will ultimately yield more material.

I'm hoping to make it to the kick off, and perhaps a write in or two after I get back. Blessings to all.

It's something I have wanted to do for a while and when I found Nano couldn't think of a reason no too. :)

Hi all, I'm Annie, an online library science student living in Naperville. This is my first attempt at nanowrimo, and at anything of this length, so I'm not sure how this'll go. I'm hoping to write a piece of fiction inspired by the old Illinois State Industrial School for Girls and the baby cemetary. it might include time travel... 50,000 words seems like a LOT. I usually write short poetry, and grad school will come first. what are write ins?

Hello. I'm Diane. This is my second NaNo, however it will be my first time joining the Naperville region. Last year I was in DeKalb and had a wonderful time, but Naperville is much closer to my home in Wheaton. This year I will be writing a companion novel to last year's using a secondary character. I really don't have much of a plot yet or even an outline. It worked out well last year to just have some characters in mind. I would call the genre adventure/thriller. See you at the write-ins!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Vivian and I am a 28 year old Naperville Wife and Mother.
I have written several novels, and short stories but none in a time frame as intense as Nano. I usually write horror/supernatural fiction but my husband challenged me to come completely out of my element and write something different. This year I will try a romantic comedy for my nano novel.
I attempted nano in 2007 but I essentially tripped at the finish line. This is my chance to redeem myself!

I hope to see you all at some of the functions!

Hello All! My name is Pachet (Pa-Shay) and this is my 2nd year attending NaNoWriMo. I am an aspiring writer; normally I write urban supernatural fiction but I have been exploring urban fiction as well. My previous attempts at NaNoWriMo have been unsuccessful and I know that is seriously in part to the fact that I did not believe in myself. I have had a serious fear of rejection since I was a child but now I have come to realize you can't fear what you don't know. My focus is to complete my first novel and then begin the process of editing and possibly self publishing. I reside in Downers Grove, IL....So if you are in that area and would like to have a write in, I am always willing to join. I wish everyone the best of luck. Stay focused and keep writing!

Hi my name is Beth and this is my second year doing NaNo. Last year a friend talked me in to participating and apparently I'm hooked!

My goals are three-fold:

1) Average around 2500 words a day (I have some stuff going on later in November, so I'd like to reach 50,000 words a little early.)
2) Finish the novel I started last year (Sleeping Beauty and the Princess and the Pea are sisters. When the entire castle is put under an enchanted sleep, Princess Margot, a chronic insomniac, fails to sleep for more than 20 minutes. She then heads out on a quest to wake her family and save the kingdom.)
3) Acquire at least one Plot Bunny during a word war. (I am a slow typer, so last year I didn't win until the end of the month when Tim realized he had a lot left over and did a word war every 15 minutes until everyone won a plot bunny. And yes, I was the last person to win. But the Bunny is now MINE!)

I am AlansMomWrites in Lemont. This is my second attempt. I exceeded 50,000 words on last year’s novel, but not before 30Nov.

This year’s novel is a mystery/suspense/police procedural/romance. At least that is how it is plotted out. It is already taking on a life of its own so we’ll see which aspect wins out. My book is set in a fictionalized Carlyle Lake in southern Illinois and is in part based on my experiences working there.

I hope to see you at some of the write-ins.

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

Heya, My name is Alan Dupree. I'm participating in NaNoWriMo through my lunch club back at my school. I am an avid writer; I write poems, short stories, and now that I'm in this, a novel. My writing style consists of empowering words, whether it be strength to the character or motivating to ones self. My grammar is highly thought of when writing, due to a demented form of OCD, but we'll not get into that.

One of my writings was actually a Nuzlocke, which is a story while playing the game of Pokemon, making rules and a storyline as you go. You nearly narrate every single detail of what you have played, occasionally throwing in your own pieces to give the story a little livelihood. If you would like to see my work, you can access the GameFaqs website and look under message boards in the DS section under Pokemon Soulsilver. Mine is Hawke375's Nuzlocke.

About my personality, I'm a bit of an oddball, but very straight-forward in my opinions. Though I highly dislike arguing.

Right now for my novel, I'm sitting at 38181 words, and I plan to work harder than ever to get in the word count goal of 50,000. I may have plenty of time, and am ahead of the game by a small margin for schedule, but I have quite a bit to get off onto Yarny, and I'm not about to lose steam.

Glad to be with you all, and hope everyone does their best to achieve their goals! :D

Hi all. I'm Beth, and i've taken on NaNoWriMo for the first time, after many years of encouragement from several friends.

My personal commitment is to get to the page every day and keep a steady pace to make the 50,000-word goal by month's end. I'm not working on a novel, but building pieces of memoir. A few days I have merely spewed the moment's worries onto the page, clearing my head and then renewing focus on the goal the next day. But for the most part, I'm pleased with the stories I have recalled and put into words.

Now that we're within a week of the 30th, I thought I'd sign in and add my name to the regional graph. Seeing those standings has been inspiring. Thank you to all!

Hello fellow Nano-ers! My name is Amy, and this is my first year attempting Nanowrimo. I've had an idea for a young adult novel cluttering my brain for quite some time now, so I figured Nano would at least give me the motivation to stop thinking about it and start writing. The beginning of the month was very strong for me. Unfortunately, my internal editor got the better of me (as it so often does), and my pace slowed to a crawl. With just around 14,300 words so far, it looks as though I won't be making it to the winners' circle this month, but mark my words, I'm destined to finish this thing over the next month or so. Plus, there's always next November! :o)

That's really great he's so excited about writing; I remember being 11 and not being able to find anyone who could relate to that passion. I've talked with a few older writers who were amazed by my and my friend's creativity, saying that you lose that quickly once you grow up. Somebody point me to Neverland! But it really is awesome how imaginative kids are :)

You will find that what you learn writing fiction carries over to writing non fiction. I've just finished a history book. and I found the fiction writing manuals very helpful in keeping the story moving ahead and holding the reader's interest.

<em>
what are write ins?
</em>

Write-ins are local events where people bring the laptops (occasionally, people show up with pens and paper) and they work on their story for some or all of the three hours. We have occasional word wars (13 or 17 minute timed sprints with small prizes) to encourage people to write a bunch on their stories. Some people bring snacks and treats to share. There is a little small talk; but mostly we write.

We might also schedule a meetup (perhaps a lunch or dinner) during the month; Katherine used to have a snack-time at Rock Bottom Brewery after write-ins in Warrenville.

50,000 words seems like a lot; but 2000 words a day is definitely doable!

Re: Introduce yourself to the region!

One of the things that works to set aside the "make everything perfect and sensible NOW" mentality is to focus on word count. Find someone who writes at about the pace you do, and try to do better than they do. It's much harder to fret about perfect wording when someone else is ahead of you in word count that you want to be ahead of.

Good luck.

And, remember, it's a first draft. There's lots of time to make it better but it's hard to make something better that hasn't been written.

I think that was mine. Glad you liked it.

I'm also sometimes at the Caribou on Randall since my daughter goes to IMSA. In fact, we may be there on Friday evening but talking with her, not writing since she's staying at IMSA that weekend and we're meeting her for dinner which we often follow by coffee at Caribou. Slight chance we may be there on Sunday instead or as well. (She is very fond of Caribou.)

Hello everyone! I'm Steve, and I discovered something deep and meaningful in NanoWriMo 2010. I found that I am a slow, methodical writer, and when I try for speed, I suck worse than a drooling infant.
So, what's your goal for November? Is it to write every day? Is it to try something from one of the challenges that you've never tried before at least once a week? Is it to write 30 perfect sentences? Is it to use November to install a habit that you can sustain throughout the year? If you share a goal with us, we can cheer you on and that's one of the great things about NaNo, so many people supporting each other, making writing easier than not writing.

<a href="http://www.thefreedictionary.com/panicking" rel="nofollow">google is your friend</a> ;-)

But you're right--it definitely is <strong>ask questions later</strong>. November is the month to tie up your inner editor, lock them in the basement and only give them just enough food so that they'll be there when you need them in January, February and March :-).

My name is Brian. I make video games for a living and for a month out of the year I like to pretend I'm a writer too.

I've participated in Nanowrimo four times, and won twice. I've also participated in The Journey the first year and have a short story in the Infinite Monkeys compilation.

I've met some fun people in this region over the years, and I'm always up for getting to know more people. This year will be very tough to get to 50,000 words since work is very demanding, so if anyone frequents coffee shops and would like someone around to help keep you on task (and help me keep on task as well), let me know.

If you're curious about my games, I've got info on <a href="http://www.briancable.com" rel="nofollow">my website</a>, and you can play some old games for free.
