It's day 3 of NaNo. Surely some of you have had some extreme oddness show up in your novel already. I know I have! Courtesy of QuantumTea, I had a Pterodactyl of Love make a brief appearance in my novel. I think it may need to make an encore appearance before the month is over....it's really quite adorable.

Re: What strangeness has popped up in your story?

Well, first off, I'm the main character, which is kind of weird, but the story is based on a bizarre dream I had a few weeks back, and I was me in the dream, so what the heck. With my wild past, I have some great anecdotes to share that really happened, and one in particular is like a scene out of a cheech and chong movie.

Also, I have explained, once and for all, the actual origin of vampires. I'm pretty excited about that!

My current word count is 6858 words! Yeah!

I dont know about strangeness, but here I am 5000 words into the Nano novel and my main characters and plot thread have yet to appear. I mean, come on people, get a move on. At this rate you're going to be minor characters and an Android and a Vampire will take your place.

Re: What strangeness has popped up in your story?

Well I hit 7,000 words yesterday (a few hours sans baby did work out great for me!)... and there are no pteradactyls in my story, but I've been surprised how insane my character is looking so far instead of haunted.

Oh... and funny moment related to my writing. I was in the middle of a scene where Joanna was getting all worked up and it was kind of intense and I was getting into it when the wind we had yesterday swept up and caught the screen door, throwing it wide open with a crash. Needless to say my character wasn't the only one whose heart skipped a beat right then. Since then I've been almost paranoid about making sure the door is latched and won't scare the bejesses out of me again. :)

Re: What strangeness has popped up in your story?

I've been reading Inkheart in between writing, and I must say I'm slightly concerned about any of my characters coming popping out of the story. The main oddity at the moment in my story is that iI'm constantly at odds with myself trying to write the story that is supposed to be without letting little things like fairies and wizards escaping into it to muck it up!

Though a dragon or two wouldn't be amiss... too much.

I also found out something about one of the important characters last night that is rather frightening. And it means that the main character doesn't have three sets of names... just two.

So far I've had the great wolf Fenrir slaughter approximately five thousand people. He does it to tick off the trickster god Coyote, his former lover. It's never pretty when love dies. I've written 13675 words so far. I'm off work today, and I hope to add another 6000 by the weekend.

For some reason I'm not completely sure of, I included a sentence about a creeping shadow in my last chapter. I don't even know what the creeping shadow is. All I know is that I had to write in the little shadow. Is it normal to not know what the hell your fingers are doing? I am now worried about said creeping shadow.

Oh, and I decided to have my two males characters snog the hell out of each other just for kicks and because I was cranky. I think I’ll kill someone today. (happy smile)

I've been sick lately and my fever has made writing interesting. I promised myself I would have a plot surprise (bombshells I call them) every 10k words. I apparently am mashing two plot ideas together and didn't know it. Dragons and Steampunk... I suppose in a few more days it'll be Dragons, Steampunk, Zombies, and Vampires. Of course Zombies and Steampunk has a certain allure to it.

this is weird: my MAIN character is running away with the story. i normally get sidetracked on some minor character and change the whole focus of the story.

he just ordered a squad of soldiers to strip down and do 500 push ups in a public square, and he's only just going on duty. hopefully, by the end of the day, there will be more conventional weirdness. i'm thinking about irreverent divine intervention, but then, i'm almost always thinking about that...

I like to believe our writing is a reflection of the world filtered through our rose colored lenses and regurgitated through our fingers.

Or sometimes that it's where we came from that we write because we have no other way of retaining the memories of the worlds in which we belong.

Oooooor we're all just quite mad.

I did not plan this at all.

Only slightly annoyed that they waited this long to take over, and not force me to spend the last chapter writing incredibly boring dialogue.

That is why I love science fiction, I can just make it up as I go, no need to explain how it works cause I don't know either. I was planning to write a story and did all kinds of research before I even got a word written. When I was satisfied I knew enough about how people dressed, spoke, mannerisms, society and economy of Victorian London, I wrote one paragraph of the novel and quit.

Re: What strangeness has popped up in your story?

A fun way around explaining things is to have one character know everything, but stay in the POV of the character that knows nothing. First character is like "C'mon, how do you not know?" and second character is too embarrassed to ask. Is that mean? Yes. Do I care? It's November. I'll care in December. :)

Ugh! My story has to decided to completely change itself and take on a whole new persona.

I'm shifting from a just general Middle School novel about the bad side of bullying to a tortured ghost seeking revenge on the new girl who dares to steal her boyfriend. It's getting creepy quick. :( I have no clue what I'm writing, so hopefully something makes sense soon!

Re: What strangeness has popped up in your story?

The central Vampire character was meant to have 'gone liberal' and swallowed the political correctness of an east-coast ivy league college education. Years of hiding, she was tame. Early in the book she balked at hunting. Then she met someone and told her life-story. She just spent 3000 words brutally establishing that the Vampires on the starship have a new Matriarch, and cast all her "tame" culture aside and returned to the "old ways". Eeep. She scares even me - and I am meant to be writing her!
