Was there an official ranking released when it was all over? I think towards the end our neighbors in Central Jersey was edging us out in total number of words, but maybe we can beat them this year. This one is a little more depressing. What you're about to see is the average words per active participant in each region (since none of us were in the top 50, I just pulled it for all the NJ regions) and then where that puts them in the ranking of all regions overall. USA :: New Jersey :: Elsewhere in New Jersey 26,383 #173 USA :: New Jersey :: Central 26,103 #188 USA :: New Jersey :: Northwest 23,365 #363 USA :: New Jersey :: South 21,108 #483 USA :: New Jersey :: Northeast 20,774 #501 &lt;----Us So while our total word count for last year was high, we're only averaging 20,774 words a person. That's not so hot compared to Central's 26k (at least their average is over half the 50k) and definitely not so hot when you look at the fact that our average # of words per person puts us 501st out of all regions, the lowest of all the NJ areas. The final ouch about our rank being 501... there are only 574 regions included in these stats. That said, the smaller regions have an advantage on this stat. A region with 4 people where everyone wins is going to have a much higher average than an area with thousands of people where only some win. But Central is very close to us in size and their average is so much higher... we can do better. This really gives us something to work towards this year. Encourage each other to finish and even if you realize 50k is beyond your grasp, at least push yourself to reach 25k to help the average. As for people who do pass 50k, you can also help our average out by writing more than 50k if possible since that will pull everyone's average up. Lastly, these stats aren't perfect. There are many people homed to multiple regions and we share many members with Northwest and Central so some of you are counted multiple times. It's just fun to take a look at where we stand and to have something to work towards this year. I see that Elsewhere is sitting beneath my personal stat graph - so maybe I'm only counted there as home? If all of New Jersey were one region the way Maryland is all one region, we'd have a total of something like 44M words on the big scoreboard and would be up near the top ten. Why are some countries all one region while others are separated into geographic areas and cities? I am guessing it's something about the ML recruiting dynamic the rest of us don't see. Our area, for instance, is larger than some areas that encompass an entire state or country so NaNo determined a need to split it out. But for some areas, though they may need to be split, if there's no willing local ML, they may have to stay one massive area. This was about a week ago so that's likely what you are seeing. But the numbers up there now are supposed to be the correct ones. They may have changed how "homing" works. I think now your words only count for your home region instead of every region you belong to. I could be wrong but I believe this is why some of the word counts went down.
