Kick-Off and Introduction Thread

Hey Everyone,
I just got back from the Kick-off party downtown, which was really fun. I know a lot of Wrimos couldn't make it, so I wanted to extend it to the boards.

Tell us a little about yourself, why you're doing Nano this year, and ask some questions if you have them.

I'm going to stay up on Halloween to start writing (after midnight, I promise), so be sure to say "hey" if you're staying up, too. If I can figure out how to do a group virtual write-in on Google+ for then, I will!

I'm n!, I'll be your ML this year.

I'm doing Nano this year because I have a mental and emotional imperative to do it. Nano counts as "me-time" for me, so it helps me stay true to writing, which is important to me. It's cathartic and restorative to me, and amazingly fun. It's as fun as it is painful, really. Sufrir! To suffer!

I have a million questions! I will try to help answer yours and find answers for mine. :-)

I also like to suffer... I used to be Catholic, so suffering was ubiquitous... I'm no longer Catholic so I have to seek out suffering and pain (although it does find me on its own a lot more often since becoming a father)

anyhow, I've had a bad case of writer's block on the novel I've been working on, and I am hoping this exercise will help me empty out my brain... my other option is a power drill, so let's hope this idea works

Anyhow, I am pink

Re: Kick-Off and Introduction Thread

Let's see, a little about me: I'm a workaholic, at least when it comes to my writing anyway.

Why I'm doing NaNo: As the only writer in my social circle it gets a bit boring hanging out all by myself beating my head on my keyboard when I can't find the right word. Well that and at this point everyone I know is sick of hearing me go on and on about this novel idea or that one. As I said before, I'm a workaholic - even when I'm not writing I'm talking about writing or at the very least thinking about it. The final nail in the coffin though would be I need a challenge. And this seemed like a good idea!

See you all around!

I got my MFA in creative writing (poetry) last year from Goddard, so now I'm looking for motivation to keep me writing... I became obsessed with a particular obscure historical figure last year that I wrote a couple of poems about, and now I really want to write a biographical novel about him, so that's my plan.

I'm also an English teacher, so I am making my sophomore honors class this year all sign up for the young writers' NaNo project, so I can write with them every day. (; We've been plotting our novels together for two weeks now and they're excited!

About me? A question I hate to answer. I love horror movies/books and I'm obsessed with anything fantasy or science fiction. I also love animals.

Why am I doing NaNo? I have focusing issues and I feel like if I don't try to do something like this, I'll never get a novel finished. And I have way too many ideas in my head! I'm also kind of doign this to prove my dad wrong. He's never been a fan of my writing and thinks of it as a waste of time. I want to prove that my writing is worth it.

So...Hi!

Aw, i'm sorry to hear that. If it's any help or consolation, you have a whole group here who thinks your writing is totally worth it, whether it sells books or not. When we write, we grow. E become more empathetic, more understanding, and e learn a lot about people, history, and even math and science. Writers are explorers and trailblazers.

Stepping off the soap box...

What have y'all Wrimo's learned from writing?

I've always loved/needed to write. It's like a beloved compulsion. I have a computer now, but every time I walk passed school supplies, I still get that giddy feeling and the Gimme Hands. Heehee.

As for why I'm doing NaNo, I'm not sure. Every year I tell myself, "Well, I'm never doing THAT again." And every September, I think to myself, "...this would be a good idea for NaNo." -_- I think that might be the compulsive part. lol.

Twiki, I get that feeling in bookstores and whenever i see Crayola crayons, of which I own about 1,000.

When I started NaNo, it was on a whim borne of deep intuition, I think. I needed something to help me break self-erected barriers. I'd never stopped writing, but I'd long stopped thinking I could finish novels or short stories.

This October alone, I''ve written 30 short stories just to prep for NaNo. My first Nanovel helped me cross a finish line I had given up on, and ever since, I use NaNo to spur new projects.
But also, it's just a high like no other, naturally derived, and I dig the side effects. And the community.

I'm surprised how willing the kids are... I put up a flyer from the YWP site with tear-off strips at the bottom for kids to sign up, and within a week almost all the strips had been torn off... so that's when I decided to do it with my sophomores, since it's a small class and I get to experiment with them. (: I have a handful of other seniors though that are interested as well, so I'm going to have them sign up tomorrow and organize some write-ins for everybody there.

I would've loved this in high school, too...

I'm Idril! I'm working on my Masters Degree in Mental Health Counseling. I'm in the middle of classes, work, and internship, so why not add one more thing to the mix? Haha!

I am joining NaNo this year because I haven't made the 50k mark yet! I also haven't participated since 2008 due to being super busy, but I'm trying this year! The idea I'm working on is based off of an Irish song I love and I felt I needed to expand on the story of the song. I love writing and have been doing it on and off since undergrad. I don't ever want to stop writing, so this is one more excuse to exercise those writing muscles!

Just wanted to say hi! I'm a first year to the world of NaNoWriMo. I tried doing NaPoWriMo for the first time this past spring and did not write a poem every day during the month of April, but I still wrote a lot! And it felt good. I really just need to sit down and make myself write. Haven't done that nearly enough in the past few years. My goal isn't even 5k--it's simply to make myself write.

Oh, and I'm a social worker who once considered an MFA in poetry. As much as I love writing, I think it's most satisfying to have as a hobby. Anyways, I'll shut up now because it's day 1 and I have nada written yet!

Hello all!! This is my first NaNo, but I'm no stranger to writing and completing novels. I've always wanted to do NaNo but there had always been something else going on...edits and deadlines from my editor, etc... But this year, all my edits for my latest release were finished last month.

I made three New Year's Resolutions for 2011. One was to finish the sequel to my debut novel: Done! (Finished it in February) Two was to revise an old manuscript that I wrote years ago: Done! (Finished that on the 1st!) And three, write another novel. I started it in May and as of Nov 1st, I was at 41K.

So, my plan for NaNo, which goes against the rules, is to finish my book. :)

I'm an author, mom, and member of RWA and the Buffalo Writers Meetup Group.

This is my first year doing Nano and I'm doing it because I've had friends do Nano in the past and had a great and miserable time and I wanted to share in that experience. My story is based off of a character I RP in D&D and I really want to expand on that story.

Hi everyone!

My name is Amy, and I've been toiling away mercilessly on a young adult novel that has gone absolutely no where in the last three years, so of course i decided to put that project aside, finally, and work on a fresh idea for my first NaNo.

I'm not sure if i'll be able to attend any of the write ins, but I hope that i can actually finish this. Between working two jobs, the holidays coming up, and getting my hunk of junk car fixed, I'm confident I can, I'll just be fueled by copious amounts of coffee and very little sleep.

:)

Hi there,

This is also my first NaNoWriMo. :) I couldn't help but notice that you are also an RWA member
and a member of a local writing group. I am located in Cassadaga and would love to hook up
with the Buffalo Writers Meetup Group. I am only an hour south of you so would I still qualify ?? :)
LOL

Hope to hear from you.
Cheers
