Editing Blues.

Hey everybody! How are you all coming along with your novels. Mine is going great!
My only problem is editing. It's so hard not to go back through and edit.
I've tried waiting until I hit the day's word count, but when that happens I just stare at previous scenes that need to be edited and forget about writing. By the time I eventually drag myself through the 1667 it's late and I have to go to bed.

Any hints on how to forget about editing? How do you guys handle it?

Can you make yourself stop rereading? As soon as you're finished writing, save and close the program, then do something else? Then the next day only reread a very little, to get yourself back in the swing of it, and force yourself only to think ahead.

/advice I am incapable of following but will dispense nonetheless, being awesome like that and all

I simply just keep plowing forward without proofreading what I've written so far (except for the obvious ones Word calls me out on). I may make a mental note of scenes I'll want to change later but I'm writing with the mindset of "Finish it first, then worry about going back and revising it".

It's pretty easy for me not to edit, because I'm handwriting the whole thing and I leave myself absolutely no space to do so. I highly recommend it. For me writing on the computer is just a temptation to highlight big chunks of text and hit the backspace key. As hard as it may seem, don't even read what you've written!

I can't believe you're handwriting your novel. I couldn't never do that, my handwriting is so awful, that come December, it wouldn't matter if I had 50 thousand words or not cause I wouldn't be able to read most of them!
But yeah I find myself delete whole paragraphs a lot because they're so bad.
As for the reading what you wrote, I normally say aloud what I'm typing. It really helps me focus on writing but it will distract me when I'm searching for a specific word or a specific way to end a scene. Because I'll go back and reread to get the momentum flowing, or to just fill time while I think. Maybe I should try a couple days where I don't do this?
I think I will.

I'm using Liquid Storybinder with spellcheck and stuff turned off and I write by timed sequences. When I'm done, I scroll to the bottom of the screen so I'm not stuck/tempted to go back and look at what I write. I also have a very competitive nano buddy who is always daring me to beat her word count, so I find it easier to overlook the little 'glitches' when I'm having a word war or two with her.

I usually find that I write fairly cleanly for a first rough draft, so with the exception of a few typos, it's not too painful to read through it, come December.

I've gone through and entirely rewritten a few scenes after realising that hey, instead of X happening at the beginning, it would've been so much better if Y had happened. I'm pretending completely rewriting doesn't count as editing... >.>

I have been giving notes to myself in brackets like [something else should happen here because it is incomplete] or instead of deleting and rewriting, adding my new text afterwards in brackets or some other way so I will remember to review later which version I like better. So far I haven't had any trouble not editing. I guess it may just be easy for me to control that little troll inside my brain lol. I also do not have any spell check things popping up in the program I am using, and that helps when there are not red lines everywhere.

I love brackets! I tend to use them when I don't know what word I want to use or am being vague because it's too going to require more effort that it's worth to fill in that specific blank at this time. For some reason I got in the habit of doing notes to myself in double parentheses, ((like this)).

That's a good idea, bracketing it afterward. I've been greying mine out and moving it to a different portion of the document, but it gets messy.

Haha, yeah I have quite a few minor characters named [insert name here]. that's going to get confusing in december. I'll probably end up changing most of their names anyway, cause most of them are awful, and quite a few seem to be named after some of my old teachers. oh well.
Getting better about kicking the editor out!
That I'm thankful for beacause now I'm on the downhill part of my story. Which means I need to jamm some more stuff in there. Stuff that will probably have little to no correlation to the current plot that's going on.
