The Introduction Thread

Stop by here and introduce yourself!

If you don't know where to start, then here's a few pointers.

Name
Novel
Years you've been doing Nano
Random fact.

Hi everyone!

I'm Sara and your ML for the TN Elsewhere group. Some of you might remember me from last year. This is my second year MLing and my sixth year Nanoing. I'm really excited for this year. Currently, I am a University student at ETSU and I'm not quite sure what I'm writing yet. I made a banner for one idea, but I'm thinking I might end up changing it. Random fact about me, I will only eat precisely one brand and type of chocolate chip cookies. Chips Ahoy! Chunky.

Welcome to Nanoland and I wish you all the best in the adventure ahead. ^_^

Hello all. I'm Alicia. This will be my fourth NaNo and hopefully first win. I only have a vague idea of what I'm writing this year.

Technically, I'm not in Tennesse at the moment. I'm not even sure when I'll be back, but it's my true home and I will be in Tennesse some during November. I'm from Jackson, born and raised. Never lived anywhere but there until this move

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hello, all! I'm Amanda, I'm from tiny Humboldt, which is in west TN and not far from Jackson actually. This is my second year doing NaNo (though this is not my second novel by any means). I won last year and I hope to do so again this year.

The novel I'm going to write this year is called (for now) The Forest Watches Us, and it's a psychological horror/drama/mystery/dark fantasy, inspired by the fairytale of Snow White and Rose Red, as well as the song 'Like You' by Evanescence. It's an old idea that I never put to paper, so I've decided to do that this year.

I got my new notebook and I've already started making notes on it, though I don't actually have a layout. I think I can probably write it to a certain point without much of a plan.

Random fact...I have two cats: named Ninja and Sushi - and they seem to think they're helping me write this year because they're all over my computer desk.

Re: The Introduction Thread

I'm Barbara, from the Tri-Cities area. I've lost track of which year this is for me, doing NaNoWriMo...maybe going on fourth or fifth? This year's novel might be a sequel to last year's, which was a sequel to the one from the year before that. I discovered a world and a cast of characters back in 2009 that I've been enjoying enough to want to create a series of tales about their escapades.

Last spring before Script Frenzy, I finally traded in my old Alphasmart 3000 (the second one I'd owned--both had lots of wear on them before they came into my hands) for a brand-new Alphasmart Neo, which I can highly recommend. For one thing, it will hold twice as much data as the old AS3K. For another thing, it has more cool abilities, such as being able to change the font size and do word and paragraph counts...although it does have its drawbacks; for example, the screen still isn't backlit, which cuts down on the amount of writing one can accomplish in darkened environments. Fortunately, most of the places I tend to write are relatively well-illuminated. The Neo is just as lightweight, portable and tough as its predecessor and I look forward to knocking off several thousand words a day with its classy, minimalist help.

This is my first year doing Nano but I have seen it before and been sad that I didn't have the tools or time to join in. I am planning on working on a novel in a series that I have had tossing around in my head for a bit. The ideas are already flowing in and I am getting real excited, yall!

Re: The Introduction Thread

Howdy, Elsewheres! garretwriter, aka Lesley, here. I'm in Johnson City and hoping to be involved in write-ins and such in the Tri-Cities this year.

I did my first NaNo in 2005 and WON!!! Then had an epic fail in '06, didn't play in '07, and have participated and won each year since.

This is the first year I feel like a professional writer. Instead of being a seat-of-the-pantser ("Pantser") I'm being a Plotter. Like last year, I'm doing a mystery/thriller. Last year I discovered -- too late -- that the mystery genre absolutely requires at least SOME advanced planning. So I've been doing that for a couple of months - researching, outlining, doing detailed character sketches, etc. I managed to bang out over 60,000 words last year, and I still don't know how. But holy cow, is it a mess!!

Random fact: I'm a pilgrim and have lived many places. I say "home is where my cell phone is." I know I'll be spending at least part of my November Elsewhere in Tennessee, however!

Hi! I'm Margaret. I'm originally from Alabama, but I go to college in Tennessee.

This is my third year participating in NaNoWriMo. I've won twice, and I hope to win again! My novel, Her Kiss Kills, is a modern take on Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Rappaccini's Daughter" (with bits of The Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost thrown in). My first novel, Beauty and the Beast, was set in the post-Civil War South and used the Minotaur myth as its back story, and my second novel, Bluebeared's Wife, mashed up Perrault's fairy tale "Le Barbe Bleue" with the Hades/Persephone myth and some good ole Jane/Rochester-esque romance.

I love fairy tales and mythology, so this year will be a big change for me. I'm excited though. Good luck, everyone!

Hi, everyone. I admit I'm not really in the habit of giving out my real name online, so... yeah. (I usually go by "Birdy" when online, though if I do need to provide my real name here, I suppose I could. )

I'm not sure on my novel yet. I'm debating between two ideas - both of which I really like. (I wanted to do the first idea in July for Camp NaNo, but... that didn't work out.)

I've been attempting NaNo since 2008. I've never won. (Never even made to to 10K, to be honest. ) Hopefully this year, that will change.

Random fact... Hmmm...

My favourite holiday is Christmas. There's just something about that time of year that's just... I don't know. Magical? Festive? Heartwarming? ... Whatever. I like Christmas.

Hi, all! I'm Rebecca and currently living in Dyersburg, TN. I'm originally from Princeton, KY, but am a bit of a nomad and never stay in one city/town/state for more than 2 years at a time. Wherever I lay my head is home. :)

This will be my third NaNo. The first year, I decided to participate about 30 minutes before it was to start and just randomly started typing at 12:01. The idea for that "novel" is a good one, but since I had no plan and, literally, just made it up as I went, it is a true mess. It would be easier just to rewrite the whole thing than it would be to go back and edit. Last year, I actually had a bit of a plan and things went much more smoothly. This year, I am simply continuing the plan from last year, as my new novel will be the second in a series. I'm super excited to get started!

Random fact: I hate being cold. Give me a hot, humid 104 degree (F) day and I am tickled.

Happy writing!

Hello, everyone! I'm Stephanie, presently living in Jackson since I'm attending Union University, whoo hoo! So that's why this is my home region. :D

This will be my third NaNo. I'm actually planning two novels, just so I can have a backup in case one goes splat two weeks into the month. The first one is a sequel to my 2009 NaNo, and the second is mushy chick lit based vaguely on something in my own life. For that reason, I'm writing it under a pen name, ha.

Random fact: I loooooooove Lord of the Rings, especially the movies. Reading is all well and good, and I enjoy it, and I like the books, but the books don't have Sean Bean's handsome face in them, now do they? ;) Last year's NaNo was 60,000+ words of pure fanfic, and I still haven't finished the story, haha.

HI!
So my name is Anna and this is the first NANO thing I've done. I have always kind of wanted to write a book, and this is the best option right now, so here I am. I live in a dinky little town near Kingsport and am working on college right now. the random fact about me would have to be....ummmm....that I am really into learning obscure things like belly-dancing and playing the pan-pipe. Oh, and my novel is going to be a fantasy/adventure type thing thats been bouncing around in my head for awhile now.

Hello everyone,

I'm Jen. I've done NaNoWriMo since 2007 (with four novels, three the next year and two the year after that) and have won every year.

I'm only writing one novel this year because of my college assignment schedule, but nevertheless I hope to win again.

I'm hoping to possibly plan some meet-ups and write-ins in Cleveland, but it all depends on a few things first, so we'll see.

Zoe here, pleased to meet you.

My first NaNo was in 2005. I completely forgot about it until 4 days into November and had no ideas, so I picked some character names and assigned colours to them (I'm mildly synaesthetic - there's your random fact) and threw them together. It wasn't a finished novel, and there was no conflict, and omg did I pad - but I got my word count in! Since then I tried to do a graphic novel version of NaNo (that ended in tears)... But apparently I did it and won it in 2009 (I don't remember it, but the site says I did, and who am I to argue?).

This year I'm trying to plot beforehand and it feels somewhat as if my brain is trying to explode.

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hello, my fellow Volunteers! ~~(Is that someone's Mom I see behind you? Hmm?)
I am a transplant, as well, from the beloved hills of Appalachia--Southeastern Kentucky, that is. It seems a whole bunch of people are following me wherever I go...they're in my head, and they won't shut up! This will be my *gulp* 8th Nano. I've learned a couple of things in that time, and will freely share, learn and grow with anyone. I challenge everyone in this thread to make me their writing Buddy. (Hey, my name's Bud, whaddya want??) I've gotten the last semi-load of nanocoffee and nanocookies in. (There is NOT enough Popcorn to make it through November, by the way. Been there. didn't even try for the T-Shirt!)

I'm a really serious guy, and a total flake as a writer. But, I do love scribin' dem words, y'all. Let me give you a couple of really important lessons I've learned in my time with NaNo:

1. 1,267 words. Every single day, no matter how many more than that your characters dictate. EVERY day. No matter what. (The most common answer on a Final Exam is "B". Get on with it! The Turkey will be there after 1,267, I promise.)

2. Make your ideas count. Don't pad. You don't have to edit now, but it will really help in December if you have ideas and thoughts that could pass muster as a plot, plot element, or plot arc. No, outlining does not add to WC (Word Count)! Step away from the calculator!

3. If you will listen, your characters will do the lion's share of the work for you. That includes plot, world-building, color of the guest's bloomers (really!), and every other significant point of your novel. If, on the other hand, you do NOT list to your characters...well, trust me. Listen to your characters. Willingly. When they speak. That will be when you are on the Toilet, in your sleep, as you walk or drive (Honest, Occifer!), or while you are working diligently on anything they find to be competition to their place in your head, heart and mind. Know them. They are (even the bad ones) your friends on this particular journey.

4. HAVE FUN! Repeat this Mantra each day, before you put your butt into the chair for the 1,267. You will grit your teeth, cry, scream, attempt the perfect murder, alienate yourself from your family, your friends, and that guy at the grocery ctore you noticed checkng out the Zucchini! (No, REALLY!) Expect it. Depend on it. These are the moments just immediately before the next "breakthrough" in your writing. If you get bored, interview your characters! If your characters get bored, have them interview you! As Raymond Chandler said: "There is nothing quite like a guy walking into the room holding a smoking gun to liven up a novel, and it's writer!

5. NaNo is a journey, not a destination. You will meet the most amazing people of your entire life on this journey, each time you take it. Lean on them, and let them lean on you. We are (despite ugly rumors otherwise!) people. We each have a belly button. (If you don't, please let me know; I need you for my novel, dammit!) Things most often happen at the speed of life. Give yourself permission to include NaNo in your life, and vice versa. This will be perhaps the toughest challenge you have ever given yourself. Celebrate the guts (or definitive mental disease diagnosis) just for being here, every day...1,267.

6. HAVE FUN! Sometimes, I'm here because I'm just too tired not to be. (I hope you will come to appreciate that statement.) Sometimes, I just need to be in a place with other writers who do not need long rants or drawn out explanations to understand just how pissed I am at the moment. (See what I did thar?)

7. Your forever life will change from this experience. You most likely will not finish your Novel (Actually, I guarantee you that you will not!). You will not walk into December, 2011 with the "Breakthrough Novel of 2011" under your fingers, out your printer, or upon your "Completed" pile. But, your life will be forever changed in this coming month. Be here for it. Every day...1,267, no matter what!

8. Every last step of any journey is but the first step of the next. Don't take me, yourself, or anyone else toooo seriously during November. This includes your child, your spouse, your Uncle Ned, your Aunt Gert, or that strange, female, "Mom" looking person standing behind you with her hands on her hips, tapping her feet with a very stern look on her face, holding the wooden spoon in her hand. While you are here, BE here. Make your agreements with those of your world before November 1st, and re-negotiate as needed. But, for 30 consecutive days (anybody doing this from Jail?), for the time you choose, BE HERE! 1,267.

Finally, 1,267. Every damn day. No Matter what. (Why am I doing this to myself...again? I promised! *sigh*) I love Nano, and the people brave enough to share it with me. I hope you will share your NaNo with me, too. I just cannot WAIT to learn, grow and share with you this November, 2011. Thank you for making this the very BEST NaNo, EVER, for my ragtag group of characters and I. We do fully intend to, in spite of it all, have fun! We hope you will, too. Somewhere in here are a couple of hints, clues, and goals for you. You'lll have to find them on your own, though.

And, HURRY! *Peeps over monitor* She's still there!

Blessings,

Bud Fields

First time NaNoer. Have the novel idea, not ready with title yet.
Random fact: my first novel was published the year my second son born ie a long time ago. Had a play produced a few summers ago, and a lot of other random publications including prize winning short story, articles, essays. I'm finally aging out of child-aka teen-rearing and homeschooling, and wanting to focus on my writing.
So, NaNo!

Ava from Spring City, done 5 times, won three. Novel is undecided, despite what my profile says. as for fun

And Budman has a few great points. I think he meant to say 1667 words a day, though.

Most importantly, don't panic. Week three is going to make you feel like crap, but it's like what runners refer to as "the wall." Break through it, and oh so many rewards will be yours.

Right now, I have a teenager, a 4 month old, a 1 year old Chihuahua/terrier puppy, and my own business, so... this will be quite a challenge for me.

Hi all! I'm Shelby, and I seem to be the only one living in Paris. :P It's a dinky little town that's snuggled up close to Kentucky.

I'm only 16, and this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo. My novel is going to be a study on human nature, and it's about a group of people who slowly go insane trapped together for a week or so... that's pretty much all I've got so far. I probably need to plan a lot more.

ANYWAY, only two days until November; I am VERY scared! :P

Hi all! I did nano a few times before, won last year, and decided only today I'm going to jump in and attempt it this year. I don't give my real name out online, for the most part, so just call me Quinn; I'm cool with that!
I'm in tri-cities area of TN, just moved here in mid-September from NY state. I've started to learn my way around and make some friends here, but hopefully I'll be able to get to (or even hostess) some write-ins. I'm a bit anti-social when it comes to my writing, though, so I may attend and hole up in a corner focused on my writing, coffee at my side. If I do that, please introduce yourself to me if you wish and maybe we can strike up conversation about our novels, my cat, my knitting, and whatever is important in your life! :)
I'm excited to be here (in TN and this forum) and to get started tonight.
I have a loose idea in my head of what I'll be writing, but I don't have a firm outline, mainly some character traits and background settings so far.
Good luck to you all!

Looks like I'm the only one so far from Jonesborough, but I can be in any of the Tri-Cities within half an hour so I'll keep my semi-isolation. Raymond's the mortal name, I use Keith Worth for a pen name whenever I write online so seemed like a decent account name. It was either that or InebriatedInspiration and since I don't drink much these days...yeah.

I'm planning to use the working title "Mystic Realm" but that will probably change several times during the month. It'll be fantasy, obviously.

This'll be my first attempt.

Let's see, what else was there? Oh yeah, random fact. Um... I'm a Florida native and hadn't seen snow for the first 18 years of my life. Six years later, and especially after last winter, I think I've seen enough for a while.

I'm not giving my age, but I have 2 kids, one in high school and on in 8th grade. *g* I attempted NaNo once before, but I really don't remember what year it was. And here it is day 2 and I'm already behind. Not the most auspicious start! My novel is about a witch, a demon, and a man with other powers that he doesn't even know he has yet. I have a great deal of it planned out, but still lots of holes in the middle.

Random fact: I have taken art lessons since I was in 4th grade but still can't draw or paint. I really wish I was a natural!

Morning all :)

I'm Nikole, 20 years, and live in Surgoinsville (though I usually just tell people Kingsport, because it's easier to spell and find on a map).
First year to try NaNoWriMo, and I'm starting a bit late it seems >.>
Novel: Buh...Vampire owns a waffle shop? That's the only thing I can think of that has vampires but isn't something that's been flooding bookstores lately. Certainly not going to be an attempt at publishing for a few years, because hopefully by then the market will have died down a bit.
Random fact: I have a tattoo of flames on my upper breastplate/breastbone/whatever it's called.

also: @Angelique: that's my mom's name, but it's spelled "Angelic". She was named after the witch on Dark Shadows. (I supposed this might qualify for a 2nd random fact, in all reality)

I have just finished figuring out my plot, so I am WAY behind on my word count!
My novel is Metamorphosis, it's a fractured fairytale. It's going to be a modern take on Red Riding Hood (with werewolves, of course, because Fantasy is my one true genre).
This is my very first year at NaNoWriMo!
And a random fact about me is that I can only ever seem to finish erotica stories, and never plot-driven ones...Hopefully, I can break that streak this month! Haha.

Re: The Introduction Thread

Hi, my name's Jess!
First year writing, I came up with the concept a little bit back after being inspired by a book full of zombie stories I've got and the comic/television series The Walking Dead.
I live in Johnson City, and I'm from Maryville.
I don't have an actual title for it just yet, if anyone would like to check it out let me know and I'll send you the work-in-progress!
It's really gory, and I worry that that may wind up being a weakness but oh well. It's more about the human psyche and being alone than it is about zombies, about surviving and growing up post-apocalypse.
Random fact: I eat sleep and BREATHE horror movies, so thinking suspense is my middle name! Just a matter of conveying it now...
