SKYRIM!

I don't know how many of you play video games. But Skyrim is coming out in about 3 weeks. Write in the middle of this venture.

300+ hours of gameplay, beautiful scenery, the ability to punch a dragon in the face (the only reason I will be leveling up my hand to hand skill, I'm more of a blades and marksman guy).

My social life will be gone...wait I don't have one.

Anyways, those who will be playing Skyrim, what are you looking forward to about the game, apart from Dragons, because who isn't looking forward to that.

Personally, the updated AI system and the new leveling system look pretty intersting.

Oh lord, yes. xD ... I mean, I've been on a huge Fallout: new Vegas bender as of late, so have been really wrapped up in it, and I don't usually buy games on the release (because I can't afford to x_x), but Skyrim. Looks. Amazing.

I agree - new AI! Yay, and if I recall, new engine, correct? I'm very excited to see this new engine.

I think I'll most definitely be keeping up with Skyrim, until I can get it, which is what I usually do - check out enough without spoiling it for myself. I'm normally pretty much a long-range fighter, going mainly on Fallout, it's always Guns, and Speech for me. Punching a dragon in the face. Sounds freaking epic! :D

I preordered it and amazon should (hopefully) get it to me on the 11th. I'm super excited! I'm glad the AI will be upgraded and you can even have companions. Hopefully they are worth a damn. I really like my dog in Fallout 3, he's pretty handy.

I like magic and swords, so I'll probably be a battlemage. Never been much for stealth, though the few stealth missions I've done have been pretty fun. But seriously, suit me up and give me a sword. I'll just run in and beat the crap out of those dragons!

Fallout is great, and I am just a big Bethesda fan.

But yeah new engine - radiant AI, meaning the story will tailor itself to your style. If you don't do stealth, there will be a lack of stealth missions, if you don't do magic, a lack of magic heavy missions. At least this is how I understood it, correct me if I'm wrong.

I've got the collectors edition preorder, yes $125, I must have spent three weeks of paycheck on it. I know, bad me, but I kept seeing screen shots and it's just so beautiful. I think I will spend time climbing to the top of some mountain and just sitting there looking out over the vista.

Oh my god I can't wait! I have been so hyped for this game since... well, it seems like forever!

We'll be having two copies of it in our house (one PC one Xbox) so my partner and I can both play at the same time, or else there might me an all-out battle. My partner is lucky that his PC copy will be ready to download on the day whenever he wants. I will have to run to town after the school run to grab my console copy.

Good lord, I've had this preordered since June. I'm gonna have to work hard at balancing this release with NaNo. Hopefully use it as my carrot at the end of a stick. Radiant AI has got me pretty excited, and of course the dragon companion(?), they announced recently. Pretty awesome to be able to have a summonable dragon to assist you in battle.

First thing I'm gonna do, is stand in the middle of a town and call that thing out. Wreak havoc on the small minded peasants and such. C:<

Re: SKYRIM!

Skyrim is awesome. To give you an example . . . (SPOILERS . . . though it's probably stuff you've already heard of.)

I climb up a mountain, going through various (beautifully designed) dungeons along the way, picking up a very impressive amount of loot (much better than Oblivion). I stop a group of guards taking a prisoner off to execute by fighting with my various combinations of the powerful bow and arrow, supercharged double-handed lightning spells, and two-handed battleaxes, complete with awesome animations and superb particle effects. The man I rescue gives me some useful information about the Thieve's Guild in return, giving me some nice leads.

Suddenly, there is a roar, and completely dramatic music begins playing. A dragon soars abovehead, scorching the ground with his fiery breath. It lands, and I stagger toward it, shield raised to block the brunt of the fire. I swing my sword, crashing through its skull. It staggers back.

A surge of adrenaline surging through me, I leap into the air. I swipe my sword as I land on the dragon, and an awesome slow-mo ensues as I stab it through its neck. It dies, and its energy flows into me.

I look into the stunning horizon, the elegant ambient music settling back in. The sun rises in the horizon, casting a morning glow upon the plains and the city. I shout into the distance, the words of power surging through me.

In short, this game makes me feel completely badass.

(Sorry for the rant. I had to get it out somehow.)

Re: SKYRIM!

TINY POTENTIAL SPOILERS - VERY TINY, BUT STILL...

I need to share a story, to explain why these types of games are the best, hands down with open world gameplay and unscripted experiences. There's tiny amounts of spoiler- and I mean *TINY*. (If you've watched any pre-release video or just heard the basic premise for Skyrim's plot, it's covered in that.)

So, I'm wandering through the landscape to meet up with someone at a particular tomb/dungeon. I'm playing a Wood Elf Ranger/Archer archetype. As I'm crossing the landscape as the crow flies, I see a huge bonfire upcoming. I think, hmm, what's this? As I approach, I see a camp of 4 Giants with 3-4 Wooly Mammoths. I think, well, darn... I don't know if they're "bad"/monsters or if they're maybe willing to talk/trade! So, I walk slowly toward their camp in the open, weapons lowered.

The nearest Giant sees me, and answers my question when, after two steps to reach me, his oversized club THWOMPS me on the head, staggering me all over the place as I frantically panic sprint away. Of course, I'm nowhere near faster then they are, and now I have all 7-8 chasing me. The only thing saving me is (SPOILER ALERT AGAIN) my whirlwind thu'um, letting me sprint 30 yards forward and give me a few precious moments to recover.

Soon, I start finding rock outcroppings to place between us, causing them to have to redirect. So I'm running backwards, chucking arrows as fast as possible at anything moving. Suddenly, since they're split up now, I find a group of 2 Giants and 2 Mammoths in front of me. The others are coming from another direction. I'm thinking, "DEAD!"

Next thing I know, the pile of 4 in front of me is being showered by a blast of Frost- from the sky! I look up, trying to figure out what the heck just happened, in time to see a dragon! fly right over my head before circling around and landing in front of those 4. Next thing I know, the other group is running to the dragon, and there's a huge fight going on. I, being a clever- and still living- wood elf, start launching arrows as rapidly as possible. Soon, the group overwhelms the dragon- which I never fired a shot at- and kills it.

Thank you dragon, for your noble sacrifice (considering *I* was supposed to kill you!) After the fight, the dragon (and I) had taken out 2 Mammoths and 2 Giants, and the others were all wounded to some degree. I still have a tough fight left. This time, I sprint (normally) right at them. Knowing I'm going to get hit at least once, I reach into inventory and down a fortify health potion and a stamina regeneration potion (so I'll be able to run right away), then switch to an armor buffering spell just in case. (LOVE the interface, makes is possible to do all that "on the fly", in a way).

Now that I arrived, staring a mammoth in the face, I use my Wood Elf power- Suddenly, I have a Mammoth fighting for me for the next minute, who turns, knocks a Giant away 10 feet, and starts fighting the other Mammoth. I have already whirlwind sprinted away, and am now regularly sprinting to gain extra distance.

By this point, both Mammoths are seriously wounded, the one Giant is VERY injured, and the other is still ok, but I quickly take out the two Mammoths, the hurt Giant and the last was easy, since I only had one guy to run from.

I stop and breathe (really, I was holding my breath the whole fight) and begin to loot and survey the area. I grab what I can off the bodies and waltz over to grab my FREE dragon soul, but the next day (in game) I make my way back to the scene. There were like, 150 arrows I ended picking up off the landscape from frantic shots and misses.

Anyways... THAT is why it's amazing. I could play 100 times after this and NEVER have that happen. EVER. And that is what I love so much. NO scripted sequences. Just random nonsense that sometimes turns out silly, and sometimes makes for the most memorable game experiences you'll ever have.

I played Skyrim....I got it on the first day it came out, 11/11/11...and...OMGOMGOMGOMG IT WAS SO FLIPPING AWEEEEESOME. The battles are harder, now you can't tromp around like a freaking superhuman, killing people in one hit. I have it on medium...and that's very, very hard. Just fightnig one bandit can get you killed...the graphics are flipping amazing. It looks real life! And I love how when you jump in a river, the current actually carries you and before in Oblivian, the snow would fall through the leaves which was pretty fake, but now they are actually stopped!
So. Flipping. EPIC.

Yeah me too...it was almost scary now much of a collective mind they were. One time, I was being my evil guy, Adrian, and I was running through the dungeons. Then I wandered into the barracks...stupid idea. I burst in and they all stand up, draw their swords and say AT THE SAME TIME, "DIE, CRIMINAL SCUM!"
O_o that was a little weird.

Stupid Bethesda say they aren't even sure the newest update will fix any of it :( Sad, because what little Skyrim I got to play was awesome.

Ouch! That's terrible to hear. Skyrim is definitely one of the A+++ titles I would never get on a console though. They just require too much oomph that only a PC can deliver- as well as the added bonus of mods down the line. (Not starting a PC vs Console war- I enjoy both, for specific game types each. Sports games? Always console. FPSs? Always PC. Seems easy to me. =P)

Still, it's such an amazing game and lock for GOTY that I hope they can patch up the console versions so you can enjoy it as much as the rest of us!

Re: SKYRIM!

Loving Skyrim so far. I haven't really been able to get into a single player RPG in ages, and Skrim is doing that for me.

I have my own little story to share:

So, I was on a quest that required me to walk a large distance to lands I hadn't yet gone to, so I fast-travelled to a place downriver of my eventual goal, with the intent of following the river. After running up the path a fair distance, I was affronted by a dragon chasing around a set of tributaries a short distance from my goal.

Now, I am not particularly high level at this point, and trying to face off a Blood Dragon on my own is not exactly a good idea. I was, however, cornered in the middle of the river, with water to slow me down on both sides. Thus began part one of my new journey.

Spamming the 'Ephemeral' shout and my healing spells, I made it across the river and started sprinting for the nearest cover, trying to keep as many rocks between me and the dragon. I managed to find the path leading to my quest goal, and took refuge inside. After a round of healing, I began to run through the quest. Eventually, I completed the quest and moved to the door with the hope that the dragon was gone.

What was I greeted by? The dragon that had chased me in there, circling the mountain and waiting for me. I began to sprint up the path, hoping to find a town that would act as fodder while I unleashed arrows at it, only to run into... ANOTHER Blood Dragon.

By this point I had taken to expletives as I ran through the mountain passes, hiding in tents, until finally I found a tent to hide in. This was the first group of people I had managed to find, and suddenly I had a chance at taking out the dragon. (The second one had vanished between saves. I got killed many a time on trying to escape the caves I had been in, and the second dragon did not return on the final run-through)

By this time, I had taken so much harassment from this Dragon I was not going to let it go. While the stormcloaks in the camp rushed to fight off this dragon, I found a vantage point on the nearby rocks and let all my remaining arrows fly. The dragon then left. He fled the camp, and I (being so annoyed at this point) ran after him with the intent of kiting him back.

Only for him to leave completely, to be replaced by the second dragon that had taken up circling the mountain after I left range with the first one.

And this is what makes me love the game. The different techniques for escaping and killing the dragons, the satisfaction of absorbing their souls when you finally get them down, and even the sense of urgency they give you, even over an extended period of time where very little is happening.

This has also been some of my downfall, as I keep rushing through the main story and leaving all the side quests to rust.

I recently got myself the game. A UK import since I dislike that they actually translated the name 'Skyrim' in the german version (what's wrong with these translation guys? They called it 'Skyrim' in Oblivion, I'm pretty sure if 'Skyrim' was mentioned in Morrowind, they called it like that too. Why translate it now, huh? This sucks!). Plus, I heard they made excellent choices when it comes to voice acting in the original version.
But.
I can't play it right now. Maybe in April or even later. I have to focus on studying, plus my arms are wrecks. My elbow nerve acts up all the time, plus carpaltunnel syndrom on both arms. That sucks.

I don't even know if this runs properly on my computer, lol.

Re: SKYRIM!

Finally tried playing Skyrim on the weekend.
Well, it's not all that addictive imho ... Alright, so I'm running around now, camera makes nauseating movements, game tells me I can't run because I'm carrying too much ... but I can still run, how odd. It's fun, really, but right now I got distracted by going to the magic academy, lolol. Since there's no one who seems to buy weapons in Winterhold (?, or was it Winterrun? Names are too similar.) I had to go to another town, almost got mugged by a thief, then got tossed a mace by another which cluttered my inventory again, only to give it back to some random hunter who it was stolen from in the first place. What the hell, Skyrim?
Also, people tell me I look sickly but I have no clue what to do about it.
Btw, encountered a flying wolf in the mountains that crushed down to the ground after I tried killing it by striking at thin air. *shrugs*
Yeah, alright, this game is really awesome, lol. I'll continue playing it after my math exam, lol.

You can shoot a hawk out of the sky, or follow it to its nest and then kill it. If you go to Solitude, next to the Castle Dour, there's the Temple of the Divines, and that has altars in it. Or you can make a cure disease potion. I think you need like charred skeever hide and mudcrab parts ore something. I know hawk feathers works, but you can just eat them plain and it works just as well haha

Late to the party.

With both Skyrim and Uncharted 3 coming out in November 2011, I knew I'd get no writing done. So, I planned ahead and did the 2011 version of Camp NaNoWriMo instead in order to be able to play games guilt free. I was also on line at GameStop for the 11/11/11 midnight release.

I've sunk 100+ hours into Skyrim on PS3 and have only come across a few major glitches. The main issue is the game freezing altogether but, unfortunately, that's the price of the massive games Bethesda likes to make. My first play through was a Khajit rogue, who was an absolutely broken stealth marksman by the time I was through with the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild side missions. Pretty much anything that wasn't a dragon died with one shot. Lately, I've been playing on and off with a mage named Gandalf the Grey. I was hoping that the Mage's College side story would yield the same type of awesome accessories that thet Dark Brotherhood and Thieves' Guild ones did, but no such luck. Just a lot of errand running for pittances of gold. I'm thinking of starting again from scratch with a heavily armored tank character. We'll see, though.

I've been playing Skyrim off and on for the past month. It's an okay game, I guess, but it does tend to give me fits. What really drove me nuts recently was I was running an errand for Legate Rikke of the Imperials, and pressed the Shout button, thinking I had Whirlwind Sprint equipped. Instead, I find out that I still had Unrelenting Force equipped, blasted a few soldiers and some nearby horses. Later on, after completing the quest for Rikke, I come back only to be attacked by her. That really sucked. I finally gave up, went and took care of some other quests, and came back to complete my task for the Imperials. But still...

Well, at least it's good for Game Fails.

Skyrim is AMAZING.
Sure, there are some glitches (okay, maybe more than some...), but it's awesome. The scenery is so beautiful, and the quests are fantastic. Every decision you make affects the way the gameplay goes. It's engrossing, to say the least, and if I had my way, I would play it until it absorbed my soul like I absorb a dragon's soul.
It's the details that make the game for me: the current in the river, the details on clothing, and the window in the Dark Brotherhood place are fantastic examples of Bethesda's attention to details. I also like the variety of shouts, and the fact that you can gain some of them without killing a dragon.
One thing that surprised me was that I got pretty attached to my follower. I had been playing Skyrim for the equivalent of 3 full days with Sven by my side. Then, somehow, he managed to die. I still haven't fiugred out what killed him, and I doubt I will. I took all of my things off Sven, and then, in an act of respect for the dead, put some stuff of value on his body. I then dragged him into the river and sent him off, to float in his homeland for all eternity like a true Nord would want.
Then, of course, I find a Kajit and give him my stuff, and he runs away with it. But hey, that's just part of the game: who can you trust?
I really like alchemy, archery, and mining/smithing/crafting. I'm totally going to turn into someone with huge skill levels in those, while everything else is practically zero - or at least as close to zero as it is now.

So, we're writers. And we play Skyrim. Has anyone tried writing about Skyrim?

I recently started a fanfic that's been bumping around inside my head for months, following the main questline and the Civil War questline (which is probably my favorite in the game... not so much for the quests themselves, but for the story). It's hilarious how I can have such trouble writing 1,667 words a day during Nanowrimo, but in the middle of April, writing a Skyrim fanfic, I can do it NO PROBLEM. I've already written over 10,000 words on it and I'm not even finished the first chapter... and I'm planning nine chapters in all. This is definitely going to keep my creative gears turning until November!

If I wrote a story about Skyrim, it would involve every game fail that I could find. Seriously, I would waste so much time on the Game Fails channel on YouTube, just so I could write a Skyrim parody.

Along the same lines, I'd like to see an Elder Scrolls movie. The way the franchise is set up, there's not reason why you can't write a whole story set in the same universe that's only connected to any of the games by the thinnest of threads. Hell, the games themselves are only connected by the thinnest of threads.

I did a short story Skyrim crossover with characters from my Nano 11.
They didn't have many adventures and ended up in bed. Together.
lol
That was kind of odd.
At least it was set in Riften, haha.

Awww. Losing a follower is always hard. D:
But lol, your rite of sending him on the river. xD That cracked me up real good.

Btw, my favourite character so far is my sneaky nord archer. She's brilliant. <3 Too bad all of her main skills are already maxed out and I have to find something else to level her with. D: Already maxed out smithing as well (she's running around in dragonscale armour, lol.)

Why the heck not? Pretty much the only time I can get 20 minutes to write is when I'm at work.

Because it's the kind of government job that makes it possible for people who maintain the servers to take a look at we're doing while signed in.

Or so they told us.

It's kind of weird, really.
