That was in the old 2D version. Elephants are much less dangerous these days, cheese is still a popular engraving, and magma is the doom of many forts. Look up Syruplead and Headshoots, they're the successor forts to Boatmurdered. Or come to the DF forum and, since your icon indicates MLP fandom, look up 'My Little Necro: Friendship is Magma' in the Fortress Mode forum. :D
...I just started it. I don't think I've ever played anything so hard. However, it's also the most in depth and compelling game I've ever seen. LOVE IT.
Other games have learning curves. DF has a harsh and unforgiving cliff of volcanic stone, with the bodies of the weak and the unfit shattered at the base. Atop the cliff, a small, utterly deranged elite drive a world of dwarves in the construction of tower mega-altars to Armok, the God of Magma and Slaughter. :D
Ahaha, Headshoots was awesome. I think Boatmurdered was better, but... Headshoots ended excellently. Not even Boatmurdered's ending was quite as good. On to Syrupleaf.
It's interesting that I can't get into DF. I play Nethack without fancy graphics, for crying out loud; obscure ASCII interfaces are not a problem for me. But DF is just so complex!
If you want to try, look up TinyPirate's DF Tutorial. It's out of date now (the military works significantly differently), but he'll walk you through most of the troublesome basics of the game and get you a decent understanding.
Familiar with Boatmurdered, made an effort to scale the cliff. My fortress functions a lot like I do when trying to rock climb - lots of flailing, and failing, generally able to sustain itself, but has ceased to gain any progress.
I still give my fortress occasional efforts, but I find it difficult to get past "just surviving" into either something resembling progress and thriving, or proper chaos and tantrum spirals.
I had a huge fortress with 120 dwarves and cage traps everywhere (Goblin zoo ftw :D) then I got attacked. Then I had 20 dwarves. They started clearing up, then there was another attack. Now I have 6. 4 of them are children. And the other 2 are nobles. I guess I'll just have to wait till december to see their eventual fate.
I invite you all to come join the Minecrafters over at http://nanocraft.freeforums.org/index.php - I have a vague, insane notion of a NaNo Community Fortress run over there, with an attempt at replicating some of the physical structure on the Minecraft server.
Once we switch the server over to the Minecraft full release, there will be a sub-world added where the Mountainhome is a fractured mess of floating islands. The dorfs are of course responsible. (And if possible, we're going to try to make it a Nether realm. The world is ruined because someone let the clowns out.)
All Dwarf Fortress players are invited to http://nanocraft.freeforums.org/ to join in a gamer/writer forum that I hope will be something of a community. I'm able to host a Terraria multiplayer server, now, which is cool, and there's a Minecraft server and I'm hoping for a Dwarf Fortress succession game or two... Because Urist is always a source of Fun Stories.
Dwarf Fortress
Anyone else play this Cliff-of-a-learning-curve game?
Re: Dwarf Fortress
Yes, Urist?
Re: Dwarf Fortress
Urist is unavailable, he locked himself in the magma holding area with a bauxite wall.
Re: Dwarf Fortress
Again? That's the third time this week!
My dwarf buddies are probably going to be feeling fairly neglected until December.
Re: Dwarf Fortress
BLOOD FOR ARMOK! MAGMA FOR THE MAGMA THRONE!
Re: Dwarf Fortress
All I know of this game is reading the Boatmurdered LP, so... elephants and cheese and magma, that sound about right?

Re: Dwarf Fortress
I find I spend more time modding Dwarf Fortress than actually playing it...
Re: Dwarf Fortress
They run on the tables and leave their clothes everywhere.
Animals. They're just animals.

Re: Dwarf Fortress
I'm going to take this moment to point out my username.
Re: Dwarf Fortress
My forts are inevitably a horrible mess of inefficiency, and my military is usually nonexistent.
But the dwarves are happy! Until they die.
