I loved this thread last year so why not kick it off this year? Truth: What was the hardest thing you ever wrote? Why was it so hard to write? Dare: Have a scene that revolves around two characters trying to get a baby chick to come out from under a couch.

I'll take the truth, mainly because I'm winding down for bed and have just finished my words for the day. I think the hardest thing I've ever written was a piece that had a heavy vibe of relationship violence in it. The entire idea is, for lack of a better term, violent within itself and I tried mentally editing the language as I'm not of fan of severely coarse language. Long story short, I ended up with something physically violent but lacking the maturity that the theme brought with it. That piece was an utter let down to read after a couple of months on the shelf. Moral of this story is: if you're going to write something provactive then do it all the way or else don't do it at all.

I'll take Truth here. The hardest thing I've ever written was a poem for my Nan's Funeral service, the reason being, I had written one for my Grandpa's the year before and was asked to write another one for her funeral, and the emotions of which were running made it hard to write as my head was clouded, needless to say it was done.

Truth: Have you ever tried to copy the style or ideas of a writer you liked? Dare: Your characters must get in a fight over something to do with vegetables.

I'll take truth, because I'm not actually writing anything right now. My family aren't really too bothered about me doing NaNo this year, but my dad is telling me I probably shouldn't do it because of college work and stuff. My friends all think I'm insane, but they expect 'insanity' from me on a regular basis and they know I completed it last year, so they're supportive too. :) - Truth: What techniques do you use to get to your word goals? eg one big reward if you win, or mini-rewards daily? Dare: Have a character that only eats bananas and walks backwards through your entire novel. They must appear at least 3 times. BP if it's the MC.

Truth. I am kind of harsh on myself, because I tell myself that progressing to my word count is my goal. The idea of progressing towards the end gets me giddy as it is. Maybe I should start rewarding myself with something... -- Truth: How do people's attitudes change towards you when they know what you're doing for November, or do they act the same? Dare: Write a character who attempts to defend himself when surprised with random fruit nearby.

Since I'm sitting at school waiting for my next class, I'll take truth :) What I like best about my writing style is that I'm big on description and I don't really have to think about characterization. I just let go and write, and when I read it a few days later, I love how it ended up. My friends agree that this is my strong point. My weakness is physical characteristics. I always seem to forget what color the main character's eyes or hair is about halfway through the piece, and when I reread I realize I never said what it was in the first place. This bothers me since I have an ongoing image in my head about how I feel the characters look, but they change based on events and decisions and other things. Something Stephen King once said stuck with me, and I don't remember the exact quote, but he said you always know what you're writing, and when you read it, your mind fills all the little gaps so it reads perfectly to you. The trick is to set it aside for a while or give it to someone else to read. That's where you'll find all the inconsistencies and questions. Knowing that has helped me to become a better writer and deal with my own weaknesses. TRUTH: How open are you with your writing, and how supportive are the people with whom you are open? DARE: Write a scene where your main character taps on someone that they think is dead, who isn't really dead.

I don't quite get the rules for this game (are there rules?) but I am so grateful for the first dare above. If I am allowed to tweak things a bit and change the baby chick into a gecko, I think you have just saved my story and given me a path to a possible ending! The dare directly above will help set things up early on as well. Thank you! Truth for 'Stormin' Mormon': I announced via FB and although I usually get at least a couple of comments for most everything I post, not one person said anything about NaNo. I am really disappointed! Would this mean their attitude has changed or stayed the same?

XD My biggest pet peeve is that whenever I get really into it (whether this is reading or writing) somebody always comes up for at least ten chores that I simply have to do right then, and thus I get pulled unwillingly out of that one spot where you're totally in the zone, know what your doing and what's going on, and everything is going good. Plus with my luck every time I go to sit down and continue because I did the list another five to ten things are thought up for me to do. It's a very trying thing. Truth: What was the worst story you ever wrote? What made it so bad? Dare: Hmm... your MC must now have one scene where they talk about nothing but the color green.

Oh no I was ninja'd! So to compensate I'll answer what I guess should have been my real truth. DX Hmm...I'd say I'm rather flexible. If it's noon or the afternoon or night it doesn't matter. Just not the morning. God no in the morning... *is worst morning person ever* And to make up for it? I guess I just write an extra sentence or two here or there so that way eventually I catch up. If I fall to far behind though, sadly I tend to just up and quit.

The rules since some people seem a little lost (I'm sorry I should have put this up to begin with). The first person gives a truth and a dare and you pick between the two. Both are related to writing and more specifically for dares your NaNo novel. You then leave one for the next person, and the game continues on and on. Now, I guess you can take other dares but the truth and dare you chose from is that of the last poster's. If they didn't leave one go back until you find someone who did and respond to that. Then give a truth or dare of your own so not everyone is doing the same truth or the same dare. Truth! The worst story I ever wrote was one about an alternate universe. It was awful because it didn't have a believable plot, there were massive plot holes and I was only about 11, 12 years old when I wrote it. It was a 'book'. Or at least it would've been, if it actually had been a good story. Truth: How many words do you usually write during the year outside of NaNo? Dare: Have a scene where your MC insists on doing something completely unrelated to the plot to boost your word count.

Truth, though I'm making it my goal to do every dare up to this point. I write about 40,000 words outside of NaNo, it's sad. I jump between ideas too much without the motivation to stick with one plot. Lots of unfinished writing tucked inside spirals. :/ -- Truth: Is there a genre you wish you could write but know you would never be successful with if you tried? If so, what genre? Why? Dare: Have any character stand on a busy street corner and start singing "The Sound of Music" and waltz with the air.

There is a chance that one of my characters might do the dare but I'll take truth anyway. Well...there are a few that I know I would never be successful with partly of the fact that I don't read those genres so I don't really care but if I did for some strange reason want to I would never be chick-lit or erotic. ___ Truth: Is there anything that you have written--other then a diary or something--that no matter how much editing you did you would NEVER want anyone else to read it? If so, what kinda thing is it and why do you not want people to read it? Dare: Have a character that is addicted to jellybeans and at some point have them run out of jellybeans and go though jellybean withdrawal.

My MC has some pretty hallucinogenic dreams, so this could work xD --- Truth: If some big shot movie producer came up to you and offered to put your ideas on the big screen, would you take the offer or tell him/her to take a hike cause you're afraid that gonna mess everything up? Dare: Have your MC participate in a race and in the middle of it spot a penny on the ground. When they stop and bend down to pick it up, have one of the other runners run into them and fall, then another trip over the person on the ground and so forth, until the course is nothing more than bodies.

I'll take the truth. Yes, I would. I have a huge ego and would consider it a compliment for someone to want to put the time and effort into making one of my imaginings a reality. I would be upset if they got it wrong, but then I'd remember that the movie would be exposure for the book and all the fans would be upset too. :) So I'd feel more connected to my fans and they'd be all, "THE BOOK IS BETTER GO READ IT RAWR!" TRUTH: Do you take criticism well? If not are there certain things that you really don't like getting picked at? DARE: If a relative of your MC dies, have them come back to you MC three times in any form of your choosing. (Ghost, zombie, dream, flashback, etc.)

I'll take the truth. Yes, I believe I do take criticism well. I'll take any help I can get with improving my writing--as long as said help is constructive. Truth: If you were published, would you mind if people started writing fanfiction about your characters? Includes both good and bad fanfics. Dare: Have a character who is obsessed with *insert movie/series/person here* and state somewhere that they write fanfics with them as the self-inserted love interest.

I had to take the truth one here: Yes, I think I would mind people writing fanfiction about my stories, because of all the literal trash that people write. I don't mean just bad writing, but things like slash and incest, which would make me angry to no end (I have a lot of brother/sister non-romantic friendships, as well as friendships between young men which are just that: FRIENDships). It seems like people just can't stand not messing things up, like Narnia or Lord of the Rings. So, the short answer: I would not like it, and would not approve of it. Truth: Have you ever written dragons as just being evil (a la Tolkien)? Dare: Have a character who stammers whenever he starts talking about some specific thing, like his sword or his horse, and give the explanation for why he does this.

Then he turned into a secret sweetheart and, yes, had a big, sweet, gay romance by the end. -sigh- Truth: Have you ever taken your story all the way to the end, only to find yourself unable to end it, either from a love of the story and general dislike of letting it go, or just the inability to? Dare: Have a character lure a big scary beast into a sense of security with candy.

Whoops, forgot to add a truth and dare! Truth: Do you use common house pets in your stories (small domesticated dogs, or hamsters, or guinea pigs, or kittens), or are they all wild animals and huge hunting dogs that aren't all that affectionate? Dare: I dare you to put a talking hamster in your story that is the only one of its kind ever in that world, that can change into a wolf or something similarly big and powerful. Bonus Points if the hamster can talk and enjoys changing from a tiny, helpless creature into a Big Bad Wolf. Double Bonus Points if he eats someone who torments him when he is a hamster.

Hmmm I'll have to give the truth on this one. I really don't tend to have a lot of household pets mentioned because A. I write fantasy, and that's irrelevant or just not a cultural thing in that world. And B. I really don't write much. lol But I have had some undomesticated animals that were mildly affectionate if you care to put it as such. Truth: Who has been the weirdest inspiration for a character in a novel of yours Dare: Include chocobos in your story. Bonus points for having a chocobo injure the antagonist by pecking at him/her Double bonus points if it's a whole FLOCK of chocobos. :D

I'll probably take a stab at that dare, but I'll answer the truth to cover my behind. It depends on how invested I was in the piece. I can occasionally take crit well, if it's delivered kindly and if I'm not being a stubborn pigheaded bigot. Ha. But there are times where I get VERY irritated about criticism, especially if it's delivered in either a smart-ass way or, worse, in a grammatically incorrect, seemingly (to me) newbie way. XD. TRUTH: Have you ever gotten emotional about your storyline? (i.e., a character dies and you sob, or you hate your characters as much as they hate each other, etc?) DARE: One of your characters lies on the ground and attempts to count every single star in their sky. I'm talking OCD style- if they lose count, they re-start, and they are DAMNED determined to get that count right.

When I was in middle school I was creating a comic about me and my friends, but everyone was an animal of some kind, and I put my ex-boyfriend in the comic as a spider and 'accidentally' squished him as I was tormenting him. It WAS plot related though, I swear. Truth: Do you tell everyone you possibly can that you're doing NaNoWriMo, or do you keep it to yourself? Why or why not? Dare: Kill a fluffy creature in your story. Bonus points if it actually fuels the plot.

I'll take truth. Yes, I've told pretty much everyone I know, twice. Why? Simple, this is my first one and I want to try and recruit as many people I can to help motivate me. Strength in numbers is always a good plan. Truth: Do you base your locations off of real places or completely made up towns, cities, villages, et cetera? Dare: Include a group of individuals/friends whose names all rhyme except one. Example, Lou, Sue, Hugh, and Steve. BP if the exception is not too intelligent. DBP if the exception saves the day.

I'm terrible at villains, so I took the test. Wasn't checking enough of the boxes, so I tried to figure out if ANY of my characters fit the questions. Still only got a score of 9: "Your character is the very antithesis of a Mary Sue. Why are you even taking this test?" Guess that's what I get for writing about potheads. -- Truth: Tell us about the most terrible Mary Sue you ever wrote. Dare: Add nonchalant toplessness into your story.

Hehe! Truth and dare! I tell everyone I'm participating. Basically, the more people who know, the less likely I am to back out. My first year, I kept it a secret, never made it past the first week. The next year, I told people and I joined up with a writing group, and I finished. Last year will not be talked about. So, this year, I'm bragging and plan on sticking to my winning formula of telling everyone and writing with friends. The dare works well with my story. ___________________________ Truth: Do you ever read your earliest works and cringe, or draw inspiration from them? Dare: Involve a food fight in your story. It has to be a full out food flying everywhere hollywood style cafetaria kind of war. The messier the better.

I will take the truth. Ahem. I wrote a Mary Sue when I was a wee leetle lad at the tender age of seven? Eight? Anyways, I was inordinately obsessed with Pokemon at that age and contemplated the game quite often. This, in turn, led into a "let's make up a character and invent a storyline from him or her!" The main character of my terrifically horrible fanfiction was an utter Mary Sue in every way- she KO'd her way through the Pokemon League with little setbacks. She had purple hair. Or green. And red eyes. Or something not found in nature. She made friends with every pokemon there ever was. Heck, I think she could even SPEAK with pokemon. I don't even remember. I tried to block these mortifying creations from my mind. Anyways. * Truth: Why are you doing Nanowrimo? For fun? For school credit? On a dare? Etc? Dare: Write emo poetry. It must be in Shakespearean Sonnet form (meaning iambic pentameter, ABAB rhyme sceme, etc).

It's motivation to actually finish a novel I start, that's always been my problem in the past and setting the goal at thirty days helps. -- Truth: What is your favorite dirty trick to get to 50,000 words? Dare: Have a character who sings bad karaoke lyrics to get across what they are saying show up at the most dramatic part of the plot.

I'll take truth. Last year, my characters were on a road trip, so they had a lot of sing alongs. So many, in fact, that editing them out shortened my story by almost 20,000 words!!! I think they sang through the entire musical of Spamalot at least 3 times. Truth: Have you ever written a story where the main character turned out to be the least interesting, and all the other characters stole the show and demanded their own stories instead? Dare: Write an epic poem in alliterative verse. It was slightly depressing to realize that all of my supporting characters had more personality that my main character. - Truth: After finishing a story, how long does it take until you reread it and feel as if you need to cringe? The only things I've finished are short stories, and those are normally written during bouts of insomnia at two A.M.d: So they get read the next morning, cringed at, then deleted. I'll take truth (and probably the dare, I'm pretty sure that happens). My first piece of writing? Oh, goodness. It's a story called The Lost Dog and it's basically my family searching for our dog, who gets lost. It was... very heavily influenced by real events. And I added a pig and a llama. My favorite part was the drawing (because of course it was illustrated) and I had an arrow pointing to a blank page that said "nothing". Truth: What piece of writing are you most proud of? Dare: I dare you to have a dream scene that's actually relevant to the plot.

I'll take truth. =) The most difficult scene I've ever had to write was a scene involving a foster child meeting her newest foster parents. I'd never had anything close to that kind of experience and it felt kind of wrong to be writing it and not knowing or understanding what kind of emotions this character would be feeling. Truth: Ever use punishments for yourself if you don't get to your word count? For example, making yourself eat peas (cause they're gross) or your least favorite kind of candy. Dare: Have a character be crushed to death by a teapot. BP: If it's a regular sized teapot. =D

im gonna take truth (: yeah i do. this year i have a special set of them. 1. i cant watch dexter, chuck or being erica for a month afterwards (or during the month if im not where i should be) 2. i have to tell my mom about all my tattoos that i have been hiding for a year 3. my best friend can punch me where ever she wants and 4. no reading vampire academy for 3 months (which would kill me) call me crazy, but this is the only way it'll work xD annyways.. truth- what kind of writer are you, and would you improve your writing in some way? dare- make your favourite charaters get drunk and confess their secrets and undieing love for one another (have fun with it)

Ooh that dare will be perfect though it will have to be some weird thing since I don't think these aliens can get drunk in quite the same way as humans....I'll find something though! Truth-Have you ever written characters based off your friends--and not told them? Dare-Have your villain (if you don't have an exact villain then just some seemingly bad-ass characters) collect some cute and embarrassing thing. For example; stuffed toys, snow globes, pezz dispensers, est.

I'll take the dare, but since I'm not going to work on that particular novel anytime before December, answering to Truth seems appropriate to me. :) I have never based characters off my friends. Never-ever. I'm just too much of a sadist to do so. For me, it would be weird to torture a character and then see the friend the char is based off the next day. However, I have a character who based herself off a friend slowly. She was in draft 1 version 1-3 of my main project and suddenly evolved into one of my best friends. I changed that in the 4. version of draft 1 so I could do with her whatever I wanted without disturbing myself. Truth: Did you ever change a whole plot so you didn't have to kill off a character you liked? Dare: Have your villain visit the hair salon regularly. If there're no hair salons in your setting, then let them have their own personal hair stylist to take care of their hair for the "ultimatively evil but still handsome look".

Nope, I have never changed a plot. If I plan to kill a character, I do it. :) As to the dare, society is my villain, and therefore has no hair. Truth! When I first started writing, I LO-OVED Sailor Moon. I wrote about a girl who was moving, and upon moving discovered she was Sailor Moon, but she was based on me, so it was just really horrible drama and hilarity. I still have it, of course! -- Truth: We all get ideas at random times; what was the most inconvenient time you had a brilliant story idea? Dare: Write about a character who pops up at random times and is pretty much unintelligible, but in the end, it all makes sense! (a la Doctor Who...BP if the character IS the Doctor!)

Usually they are ideas on how to torture my character and I just feel guilty thinking about killing off her siblings when I'm in mass... Haha Truth: Do your characters just come to you? Even that doesn't usually work for names, so I go to random name generators online. TRUTH: Who was the most egotistical character, used or unused, you have ever thought of? Truth, only because that doesn't really work in my story's world. No, I never wrote a sex scene at school or work. I DID write one scene while babysitting. urgh that dare would have worked so well in LAST years nano...so I'll take truth. i'm...not really a fan of unwanted criticism. If I ask for criticism, I love it and I take it all to heart, but if people just start criticizing and I haven't asked for their opinion, it pisses me off and even if they're right I'll usually work around it so I don't take their "advice". If I wanted it, I would have ASKED. Truth: My NaNo story idea is based off a dream. But I watched TV the night before that included at least one showing of the laundry detergent commerical where the clothes were being tortured (one was put on the rack and stretched). My dream included a character on the rack (which I probably will not use in the book), so that's probably where my brain got the idea. And at the moment, my princess is named Jasmine. I needed a J name. I remembered that Jasmine meant "climbing flower," so I chose that. Then I remembered Jasmine from Aladdin. My subconscious didn't tell me that until I'd chosen the name. Oops! Truth: How much time have you lost on the forums in the past 24 hours? Dare: Give your villian an attribute you secretly wish for yourself. Sorry, I'm not very good at this. :)

Yes. When I was sending my character designs to the artist I'm working with, I asked for one of the characters to have a band tshirt reading "The Unreachable Moth." I'm assuming this means my voice as a narrator and... it depends on what I'm writing. My "pure" voice is so ingrained in me that I can't think of where its inspiration came from, but, if I'm writing Victorian-era fiction or something, I read books from that time period so it gets an "ethnic flair," if you will. Other times, the setting itself just has its own voice. If we're talking voice as in character voice, I just listen to how people talk or watch movies of the time period I'm writing in. Truth: What's the most embarrassing (in retrospect) piece you've ever written? Dare: Someone is in love with and wants to marry an inanimate object (body pillows are cheating; I'm thinking lamps, etc). Go.

I'll take truth. Yes, absolutely. When I write, I tend to fall for my characters. I think it's pretty normal, because I think that sub-consciously, people write what they love, wish for, want to be, etc. Maybe not everyone, every time, but a good chunk of it at least. Truth: What is your main writing tool? Pen, pencil, computer? Dare: Have a character suddenly stare off into space, for no reason, in a crowded place and at an inconvenient moment.

Well, I can't really do Dare, because Lady Gaga doesn't exist in the same world as my characters. So, I'll go with Truth. It really depends, sometimes it's fun to write with someone, but a lot of times I like to write alone. Truth: Do you prefer male, or female antagonists? I don't have a lot that I won't or can't write, but the first thing that occurs to me is any kind of situation where a person is out of control due to drugs/alcohol. I was once drugged without my knowledge to remove my ability to make decisions, and it's just not something that's fun to tackle for me. Also, my father was an alcoholic and I've seen him completely passed out, nearly hitting my mother (he turned and punched the wall, punching a hole right through it -- he's 6'4 and not skinny and my mother is 5'2 and built like a bird, so I'm fervently glad he did), screaming at her or at me, and although I'm a total Daddy's girl and I love him more than anyone, these are intensely scary memories and I wish I could forget some of these incidents. Truth: Do you have anything you're ashamed of having written? Why and what was it? Dare: If you have a novel with both supernatural and mundane elements: have an encounter where a supernatural character has to explain something away to a "Muggle" redshirt. If not: have a piece of space junk from a space station hit a building or character. Bonus points if it's a toilet.

I'll take truth, but only because I don't think i would be able to logically fit that conversation into my novel lol I have only ever killed off three characters. One of them accidentally killed himself (it's not as tragic as it sounds), one was a villain and deserved it, and the last one died of pneumonia. That one was really recent and tragic, but it had to happen. I've never done it because I was sick of them. Ok, Truth: Where is the one place you get the most mental writing done? Dare: Have one of your characters become paranoid that their stuffed animals are coming to life every time they leave.

I'll take both~ Truth - For me, it would be the critical essays we're required to pass for English class. I really, really despise essays; most especially critical ones. They force me to yank the creativity out of my writing - which is my writing's 'life source', so to speak. The dare would be awesome for my characters, heehee. Truth: Have you ever imagined your characters being placed in a video game? If so, what is it and why? Dare: Write a scene wherein one or at least some of your characters daydream about being placed in a video game and get stuck in it for a week or two.

Truth: What's something you find yourself including into all (or almost all) your stories, whether you like it or not? Dare: Turn the last fact your character said into a lie (example, if your character said "I have to go now" they really don't, they're just avoiding the person, or if they said "I'm Sara" then you now have a character going by the wrong name and must come up with a reason for why--which doesn't have to be explained right away)

I'll take truth: Yes. I have electrocuted a character to death. It was a flooded basement and the power grid had rotted wire casings. To save everyone else, someone had to go down and turn the power off but didn't make it back to the surface. Truth: Have you ever written an allegorical character (ie - character represents an ideal like "truth" or "justice" or something) and then regretted it? Dare: Include in your story a coin with a head on both sides and make it a major plot point.

Since I'm not a part where the dare would work for me-- I'll go with truth. They mostly just flow. On occasion, if I think about the main idea, a few details come to mind before I write, but usually I just let my brain improvise. Doing that has made my descriptions both interesting and horrible. No, but I have two GameFAQs tabs open. One for a FAQ on the game I'm playing, one for my other boards so I can comment/help out another gamer. Truth: Have you wanted to get out of some important event this month just so you can write? Dare: Have 5+ characters just get up and do a musical based on the items around them. Bonus points if it's a situation where silence is critical (test, they're trying to sneak up on the enemy, etc.). Double points if nothing bad happens. Triple points if the musical ends up helping them.

Right now im using Hansel and Gretel because i'm rewriting the original story into something more modern and sinister. Taking truth. Believe it or not, the most difficult fight scene I've ever had to plan out is my (modern) version of the Burr-Hamilton duel, even though we all know what happens. Perhaps it's because modern!Hamilton is my MC and I'm loathe to let go of him! I'm torn between two: I actually just got done with a scene where the main character is raped repeatedly in front of her lover, and it's really cruel and graphic and full of mean words. :( The other, which I'm about to write right now, is a scene where the main character...uh..."emasculates" the man who raped her. -- Truth: Which of your characters in the project you're working on right now to you relate to most? Sure I will take that dare it sounds like a ton of fun. Truth: And be honest how often have you succumbed to the traveling shovel of death (a shovel which for some random reason a character decides to bludgeon people to death with and is in so many stories) and if you have used it, how did it come about? Dare: Have a character in your novel, suddenly decide that "they" are out to get him and start wearing a tin foil hat. The character can be as minor as major as you wish, and the "they" in question can be any person, group or organisation.

Truth: I have recently discovered that my characters control *me* to the point at which they can make me believe that I can control *them*. Truth: Have you broken the 4th wall this year in Nano yet? I'll take that truth I do have a job, i work in the deli at a grocery store, but as well as serving deli meats we also have an Asian Kitchen where we serve hot food, a hot case with chicken strips and fries and stuff, a salad bar, coffee bar, and bubble tea place, so depending what shift i'm working sometimes i do sometimes i dont. If i'm on an 11-8 shift i write on my hour long lunch, if it's just a 5-10 shift, i only get a 15 min break and i usually spend that eating free cookies from the bakery and flirting with the guys in the Produce department :P Truth: What's the biggest thing you regret blowing off in favour of writing for NaNo, this year or in previous years? Dare: next time you take a break, call someone up, and read them the first chapter/first section of your novel

I'll take the truth. Last year was the first year I was really serious and I practically lived at the library after getting off of work. I put my novel first and blew off my family and my chores and my mom wasn't happy. She wasn't happy when I told her I'm doing Nano again, but this year I'm managing my time better and I'm still able to do my regular daily stuff AND writing this dang novel despite moving to a new town last week and job hunting and stuff. Truth: What cheating methods have you discovered work and/or what cheating methods have you discovered DON'T work? It ended up being really embarrassing because we always randomly got someones story to critique, and his girlfriend ended up getting mine. Awwwkwarrd. I'll take the truth. I'm nervous about a sex scene popping up in my novel. Or any intimate scenes at all. I don't plan on there being any but I tend to just go with the flow when writing so I really don't know what's going to happen :x Truth: How do you get back on track when you've been interrupted? Or do you prefer to just let that train of thought/idea/scene go and come back when it wants? Dare: Include the line "Top hats are gentlemen's talking hats" somewhere in your novel. Can be dialogue or whatever :)

I'll take the truth. My biggest distraction would be twitter, Glee and sometimes music. Or my thoughts, sometimes I can just stare off into the distance and be thinking without realising I've stopped writing and then it takes me a minute to get back into what I was doing. But the internet is the biggest distraction I think. Truth: What's the dirtiest word count trick you've ever done? Dare: Have your MC's parents interrupt them at a really inconvenient moment.

Just wanted to say, I LOVED this dare when you first posted it. I've been mulling it ever since. Then tonight, I got up to let the dogs out to potty and inspiration hit. I spent over an hour working on a scene for my NaNovel as a result of this dare. Not only do I Iove the scene that resulted - which fit PERFECTLY with the characters and setting of my book - but it segued perfectly into the ending for the book. So, now I have the first 6 chapters done and the final scenes written. Just have to finish writing everything in between! *G*

I'll take the truth! I wrote a very long story/ book type thing when I was young. Though I had always shown interest in creative stuff this was the first time I realized that I could actually put stuff together in a concise and interesting way. Though I still walk away in a mild form of shock when anyone tells me that I am a decent writer, I have found that writing is something that will always be there for me no matter how many years go by or how often I neglect it. which I can't for very long XD Truth: do you ever base your characters off of real life friends? what has happened in response to that if anything? Dare: you MUST write word count of the last three digits of time.

Truth: In the library at my school - they have these really comfy chairs and the only way that it could be improved is if they had some way that I could make hot tea. As it is, I have to make do with cold. Last year, a friend of my MFC died and I had to describe her internal misery when the news hit her and I was thinking about how I would feel if I found out my best friend died and I described the feelings I had. I got really emotional because I can't imagine a world without her. I wanted to stop, but I reminded myself that the sooner I finish this, the sooner I can end these terrible thoughts. And about a month ago, I was rewriting the epilogue of last year's NaNovel to where my MFC and MMC are their own memorial service for the friend in question. Alchemy's truth - I've never cried while writing. I get excited as all getout when i'm writing the action scenes, but the tragic scenes just bore me. Ooh that dare would fit pretty perfectly in my story! My FMC is a writer (mostly juse a personal journal/diary) and my MMC *might* be a writer as well. I had to stop writing in the middle of that scene so I don't know yet :/ Truth: Have you ever written (or thought about writing) a fanfic? Dare: Write a mini fanfic scene into your nanovel. I generally don't keep the internet open while I'm writing because it's too easy to switch windows. If it's closed I have to wait a few seconds for it to open and load my tabs. sandwich's truth: Well, the thing that sparked this story was a nightmare I had a few years ago. The nightmare in question is going to be the climax. I am excited to get to it after all these years, but at the same time, I'm nervous because I don't know if I can describe the sense of horror I felt in the dream. While a lot of authors wish to write something so beautiful, it'll make their audience cry or change their life, I just want to scare people. That is my goal as an author. Truth: Do you have any guilty pleasure music that inspires you while writing? Dare: Take something that's not from your novel's genre and put it in. Romance novel, add a dragon! Fantasy novel, add a cliche love story! Those are some examples. :)

I've written some pretty cruel people for fanfiction, but I've always enjoyed writing them, even if I didn't like them, so I don't think I ever hated any of my characters... Maybe hated how I developed them, but not the characters themselves. Truth: Do you have a specific position you have to be in to write? (like sitting cross-legged) (and for the record, I just have to be able to type) Dare: Add a scene where a/some character(s) is/are doing something that requires him to be in a weird position (like playing Twister) when someone walks in.

I'm taking the truth. Yes, my first complete novel my MC is identical to me. When I had the dream about the story it was me that was in it so I of course went with it. It's funny to see myself in print, but even more hilarious that I see myself that way, oh and others see me that way too, but to be able to know who I am I think is completely awesome. Ok so here is my insert for the DARE,minus the fanfics and love interest (sort of) what do you think? Chris stood in the middle of his dorm room, in nothing but his white fruit of the loom underwear, a water gun in hand watching Scarface. “I’m Tony Montana and we are going to take over this country, inch by inch, city by city. So say hello to my little friend.” A smile and fake Cuban accent that would've been heard clear across campus had the TV volume not been so loud. Chris adored Al Pacino. His character in the movie more so than Al but he still watched that movie more times than anyone in the history of obsession. Chris’ worship for the character went beyond just merely the movie. He saw him as a true mover and shaker, a man who got what he wanted, not by waiting for things to just come to him, but by taking control and doing what he wanted when he wanted, using whatever means necessary. While he planned he thought, what would Tony do? And anytime he did or added something new he did it with Tony Montana in mind. Had he been real he would’ve called him on the phone and asked him what he thought.

I already did that dare last night, so I'll do the truth. This year's novel is a continuation of last year's (going to be one novel, though, in the end). I don't want to go too far into detail, but yes. There are a few things I want to change but have to wait until the first draft is done. Truth: What has been your most successful AND/OR your least successful cheating strategy? Dare: Create a character with at least three words in their last name (like Mrs. Van Der Woodson) and only refer to them as such for the entire novel.

Truth is...none? Har, I'm a very stubborn sort. I'd hate myself if I actually, seriously considered ditching Cain and my dear Ned with their story untold. Truth: Do you hate your story and/or any of the characters right now, simply because of NaNo? (Not because it's a very hateable charrie or because the story is distasteful, in other words.) Taking that dare. It should fit wonderfully for a heart-to-heart or advice scene. I suppose I'll decide on humorous vs. serious when I get further in my story and closer to writing it... Um. Truth: What do you do when inspiration strkies at a really bad time? Like when you can't get to a computer or don't have paper to write on? Dare: Spend an hour or so in your MC's shoes. Think like him/her, talk like him/her, imagine yourself to be in the situations he/she would get into. Then write about what you've discovered about your character. BP if you're writing a novel with lots of fight/battle scenes. Double BP if you act out the fight/battle scenes :)

Hippy's truth: In a few ways. The biggest one being that we're both artists. I love to paint but am not very good, my MC, however, is a prodigy when it comes to painting and just a few personality traits like mannerisms. I tend to put a little bit of myself in all my MC's. I pick truth (the dare's really good, but my MC is pretty similar to me and I think like him already). What I do when inspiration strikes at a bad time...if I have a pen with me, I grab it and jot notes on my hand. If I don't, and I'm like in the shower or jogging, I think about it over and over in my head, kind of chanting it and daydreaming into it. It also helps during jogging laps because it keeps my mind on something besides how hot it is xD. Truth: What is the randomest line you've written so far? Dare: Have your villain/antagonist complain about a squid.

Truth: Yes. All of my characters (in this year's Nanovel) are inspired by real people. There's some of me in my MFC, the antagonist is based off of an ex-boyfriend. My MFC's best friend has traits from a few of my best friends, and the love interest is totally based off of my celebrity crush. Truth: Have you ever written a sex scene for the sole intention to increase your word count? Dare: Have two characters have a fake wizard duel with makeshift wands (sticks, spatulas, etc). BP if the makeshifts are sporks. DBP if all the spells they shout are from Harry Potter.

I'll take the truth. Yes, on my first novel i wrote non-stop for an entire year :) at the end of which i had over 900 pages and its going to turn out to be a trilogy, with a possibility of two spin offs :). Truth: Have you dreamt about a story and then woke up and forgotten it only to find that later you remembered because it came out in one of your WIP's? Dare: Have a random character be a total muscle head who's always working out and talking about working out, and hyped up all the time.

Many of my characters begin based on people I know or have known in life, or sometimes just someone I've seen (and one of them is based loosely on me) but most of them evolve to become wholly themselves over the course of the story. Truth: Do you find yourself envious or seriously PO-ed when your writing buddies are thousands of words ahead of you? Dare: I dare you to write one day's WC WITHOUT your NaNo drug of choice (Ie: coffee, soda, twinkies, chocolate...)

Sounds adorable, but I can't see them buying rabbits when they're lives are in danger. So I'll take your truth. When I have major plot issues, I just brainstorm and try to work through it. For instance, with this story there's a live-in couple and I decided that they're engaged. But then they went to a New Year's Eve party and the guy proposes. I was like, "what are you doing? They're ALREADY engaged!" But I didn't know what else to do in the moment. So normally, I would have gone back and edited the wedding plan conversations, but with Nano, I'm just leaving it and I'm going to go back and flip things around when I finish this first draft. Truth: Do you have spellcheck turned on? If you misspell a word, do you stop to correct it right away or do you keep going and then correct your text later? Yes, I do. But most of my spelling mistakes are typos that I automatically go back and correct. I don't really use an advanced vocabulary right now, apart from what the thesaurus suggests. :P Although I remember spending one long hour spell checking my Camp NaNoWriMo draft and ordering it into chronological order. Truth: When you can't think of a word, do you look for it immediately, or just describe it in brackets and move on? E.g. evidently = [clearly/obviously] or [when something is obvious... begins with 'e'] Dare: In the next 2,000 words, have your main character enroll into a dance class of their choice. Bonus points if it contrasts with their character. :)

Truth: Sometimes I'll look it up using thesaurus.com, sometimes I'll ask a friend who's used to that sort of question, or if I'm feeling lazy I'll just describe it. I think I should probably try to avoid looking it up or asking my friend because that just leads to distraction and makes me lose focus on the story.... Truth: How many dares (or challenges from other threads) have you saved to use in this nano? Dare: Go to a public place where there's a lot of people (a shopping mall would be perfect, especially this time of year) and observe the people around you. Then write your observations into your story however you see fit.

I can't think of one in particular, sorry. But there is a love story going on between the murders and stuff, and since I've never had a serious relationship, it's hard to describe the love the MC feels for the guy, so I'm sure some of the lines are pretty cheesy. Truth: How much time have you honestly spend writing your novel? Dare: Describe a scene where a character is clipping coupons or going over current deals. If your novel takes place in another time period/realm, then describe some kind of deal relevant to your novel. Outer space? The next space station has a buy one get free on moon rocks. Renaissance? The blacksmith is offering a 25% discount.

Truth: I only have 6 characters at this point, one of them was killed off 10 years ago, out of the other 5, there is one I would easily kill off, and another that I'm already planning on giving a horrible disease for the sake of tragedy, and I could probably kill off 2 more if needed, so really the only one I couldn't kill off is the mother of one of my MC's who is just too sweet and Texan, and I named her after Amelia Pond. Truth: Do you ever dream about your characters and/or daydream about them in classes/work. Dare: Write an elaborate dream scene where one of your characters turn into a bird that dies and is dissected by a crazy high school science teacher.

Truth: I do a mix of both... though probably more on the winging it side. I knew how it was going to begin and I have a a plot twist/big discovery at the end that I have planned. My MC also has a goal that she`s trying to complete (though it`s very vague... she wants to start a new life and is going to try interpreting the prophetic dreams she has). But besides that, I`m winging it. My characters keep doing unexpected things and changing things completely from what I had originally planned. It`s kinda fun that way though. :) One of my characters who started out as just a crazy old man just told me that he`s actually being manipulated by the bad guy in the story. :o I certainly wouldn`t have guessed! Truth: Do your characters ever do something completely different than what you expected? Dare: Have a character start sleepwalking and wander into another character`s room/sleeping area.

As I don’t seem to have a productive time (other than whenever I’m supposed to be doing anything but writing...) I’ll go with Blue. So this chapter my narrator finds himself listening to Blue on the radio despite the fact that he’d rather it were Blue Oyster Cult or in fact anyone but Blue. He then almost destroys the painting he’s working on with a smear of blue paint. Going outside he finds a blue sky completely devoid of the thunder clouds he wants. A tiny blue creature is found living in the back of his cupboards and finally Rachael turns up with blue streaks in her hair and a new blue wardrobe. Casey wonders if this is all some strange sign...especially when Rachael shows him the match book for ‘Eternity’s End’ which is also blue...Maybe he should go there and find the one person in all the world he hates more than himself...and help them... Randomly good inspiration of this chapter. Thanks:) So Truth: If your nano was turned into an audio book who would read it? Dare: Kill off your main character! (I did this in my first nano and now it is becoming a major plot point in the series that he has to die in every book...it’s amazing what a tiny dare can start)

I'll take both since I should really get back to working on the novel! Truth: I am most productive at the most inconvenient times! I work on my novel during one of my study halls and by the end of the hour, I'm in full-fledged writing mode and then I have to leave. It's a little depressing sometimes! *Runs off to talk about blue for at least 300 words!

Truth: I'm not sure which is more outrageous, so I'll give two. Two years ago in NaNo, one of my MC's obtained a refrigerator dropped through the roof with a dead relative inside. The character then proceeded to eat the relative. In the same story, another MC took a train to a random place and got eaten by a weredragoness, who only ate him to obtain his violin. I'll take the dare as well. Truth: Do you think intoxication helps any part of the writing process? Dare: Pick one: Write a chapter/section that is solely Donkey Kong fan fiction, or include a common cliche that functions as a main point of the plot.

Truth: I don't drink that much coffee. Hot coffee gives me heartburn, but I'll to a coffee house and get a fancy cold/iced coffee on occasion. For writing this year, I've noticed my vice is hot cocoa or ice cream. I've been having either a cup or cocoa or a Culver's sundae almost every night this month. And I will take your dare! I've been too obsessed with checking my word count every few minutes so tonight, I'm not checking it until 11:30. I'm pretty sure I'll be close to it. Truth: What is your vice for writing? Dare: I give you the prompt 'wings of a dove.'

I give mad kudos to you for attempting this challenge at 14! I first heard of Nano when I was 16 or 17 and thought it was insane. I never thought of trying it until I was 23.

I'll take both the truth and the dare. :) My biggest vice is demotivation. If I'm unhappy, I can't seem to do anything. That and distraction, agitation, etc. I need to stay on task and for this novel particularly, I'm not loving it as much as I did before November, but word wars and challenges are helping me keep up with my word count. I don't like to too much now, but I hope I can learn to love it again as the month goes on.

Right, a truth/dare of my own. Truth: What's your favorite type of character. Dare: Introduce a character everyone else hates. BP if they have a logical reason for hating that person. DP if they don't. TBP if they learn to love that person later.

Dare: Your character trips and falls on his or her face, blemishing it. It has a profound effect on their interaction with others.

Honestly? I'm not listening to anything right now. But the last thing I listened to was Your Congratulations by Alanis Morissette. Truth: When did you first start writing? How long after did you start NaNo? Dare: Your character is travelling home on a clear day, when it suddenly turns into a thunderous storm, frightening your character into wondering if they'll make it home without injury.

Truth: Well, I wanted to say that I've been writing stories as long as I knew how to read. But that's not really true. I was creating my own stories even before then. Seriously, as long as I could remember, I would come with weird little stories about aliens and monsters, but since I couldn't write, I drew them as picture books. I was born with the story telling seed in me. As for the second part of your question, I started Nano two years ago; this is my third. Dare: I might just take your dare. I don't see any place for it in the future of the novel, but there's a potential spot a couple chapters back. I'll see. --- Truth: What is your ultimate goal with your writing? Dare: Have a character wear fingerless gloves. BP if it's not the right setting, like on the Boardwalk, for instance.

Oh! I forgot to add a truth and dare. Truth-- If your character was on a deserted island what three things would they bring? Dare-- Have your character eat something really gross, that they don't have a choice in eating.

Haha. I love this challenge. I had to stop reading through the posts because I kept writing down far too many dares to use in my novel. I think my main character would probably bring a notebook and pen, a cat and a camera. Truth - What is your favorite place to write? Dare - Two characters meet because of their mutual taste in socks. Hopefully these aren't too lame... I'm new to the forums.

Oh I really really love that dare because I'm a huge fan of socks, but it does not fit into my novel in any way so I am going to go for the truth. My favorite place is in at home, when it's cold outside and I'm sitting on my bed with a blanket around me and lots and lots of tea to accompany me, preferably joined by some homemade brownie :D Which is exactly what I'm doing right now! Truth: What is your favorite character from someone else's book? Dare: Write a scene that involves a piano interacting with a duck.

Oh geeze, that's such a tough question. I might have to say Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. Truth: Have you ever deleted a section of text and redid it only to have the word count come out less but kept it because you cared more about the plot/flow of the scene than the word count? My favorite genre besides fantasy if fictional romance. Truth: Have you ever created a character who quickly becomes your favorite in the story, but who isn't the MC? Dare: Include this reference to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: a character who's name is Runs-in-Circles BP: if the character asks for a carrot and shoes DBP: if the MC refuses, and the character starts running in circles yelling, "Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni!" TBP: if the character says, "Have you seen my sanity go by? I seem to have lost it some time ago." QBP and a plate of chocolate chip cookies: if the MC kills the character out of annoyance, and the character returns to haunt the MC, screaming, "Ni-ni-ni-ni-ni-ni!"

Yes. One of the MC's best friends, a transfer student from Japan. Since he's knew to America, he has a lot of awkward moments, especially with the language. He knows English quite well, but it's the slang he has so many problems with, but yet, he's a genius. I hope to God he's not a Gary Stu. Truth: What was the last thing you were doing when you thought, "I should be writing instead of doing this." Dare: Have a scene describing a character drawing random doodles in a notebook.

Truth: It isn't part of my novel, but I was working on writing out character sketches at the direction of a page I found online (I can't recall where or who wrote it). This person was adamant in suggesting that a writer should ask each character for their most embarrassing memory. I was creating my MC's brother and came up with a weird scene that he was going through puberty and... well... something... erm... came up... as he was walking through town. It was weird for me, as I've no clue what it's like to be a man. I don't think I have the guts to ever mention it in my novel. And your dare is perfect, as I'm in the process of creating a language for a people that I've decided my MC will live with for some time. It'll be fun to watch her struggle and accidentally insult someone. Now! I'm sorry if either of these has been done before. I'm just getting into this and I'd rather spend my time writing than reading through 12 pages of posts. :| ---- Truth: Have you found yourself going off track during the course of your novel? If so, what in your story distracted you? Dare: Incorporate a character with an irrational fear of something your MC is, looks like, or does. (ex. Truth: I have indeed gotten off track during the course of my novel. I was just trying to increase my word count, so suddenly I decided that it would a good idea for some scraggly little boy to run past my two main characters on the street and for one of them to pursue him. So I got into a ridiculous and pointless side-story about a group of orphans, which did increase my word count quite a bit, but I know that the entire section will probably be deleted after November. Your dare seems like fun, I'll try to work it in pretty soon. ^^ --- Truth: Is there a character in your novel who you absolutely hate? If so, why do you hate them, and did you originally intend for them to be hate-able when you created them? Dare: Give one of your primary characters a rival or mortal enemy.

Truth: Yup, he's meant to be a "bad guy" like character. (His jersey number is 66). He's the one who goes aroun and picks fights and ends up spilling my MC's secret to the world (yes, actually the WHOLE world, on tv.) And yes, he was created to be hated. (Oh, that rhymed!) __ Truth: How many things in your novel are based off of real life exeriences? Care to share one or two, if so? False: Have one of your characters obsessively collect or hoard something.

Same here, Ayden. My novel is inspired by a real experience but things are written much more extremely than they really happened. Truth: My favorite word? Gosh, that's a hard one. I pick truth-- I just remember that I want to be writing. And if I'm not, and there's no pressing thing happening that I have to focus on, something's wrong. Same way I avoid eating candy and other such things-- by remembering that it's not actually about doing something I don't want to. It's about doing what I really do want to do. If I didn't want to write, why would I be here on NaNo? That said, if you lose touch with your goal, or if you have to manage a difficult scene before you get to a better one, updating your wordcount frequently and watching your progress is really cool. Truth: Why do you write? Dare: Have music figure into your story somehow.

I haven't yet, but that's something I can see myself doing. My grandmother, parents, and aunts wants to read my novel when it's done. There's a lot of violence and mentions of sex in it. So I can totally see myself going through and making the novel grandma-friendly, but I won't. In the end, the book will be published, Grandma will buy it, and she'll just have to deal with it. I often wonder how other authors handle their family members reading their books, like Stephen King, for instance. --- Truth: What font, size, and spacing do you type your novel in? I need to rework my soundtrack (music is like my fuel half the time), and my health hasn't been the best as of late. But it's NaNo or bust, right? Truth: What is the worst writing habit you have? (No wimping out! I want one that makes you cringe when you think of it!) Dare: WIthin the next 100 words, no matter what is currently going on, your MMC must collapse and have to be taken to a hospital (or the closest thing to one in your time period).

I'll do the truth, because the dare is next to impossible in my novel. My worst writing habit would have to be the expressions that I make. I act like I'm the character, and kind of mutter what they're saying to each other. Truth: Are you eating grapes at the moment for an excuse at not writing? Dare: Include the words "Lipstick" "pigs" and "butter" in the next page or so.

Dare: You dare intrigues me, but I have no room to introduce any more new characters. @littlewonder Truth: The thing I am most afraid of is my family and friends judging me. I'm not afraid of rejection or people not liking it. I'm just afraid that the people I care about will be afraid of me or be mad at me because my story is very violent. I watched an interview with Wes Craven and the same thing happened to him after he did the original The Last House on the Left. His kid's parents didn't want their kids to be around him and he was shunned by his neighbors, for instance. Granted, my story isn't as violent as any Wes Craven film. Dare: I like your dare, too. I'm going to try that one as well. Truth: Do you know how your novel will end? Dare: Add an explosion! If explosions are normal, then add a rainbow!

I only have three characters, the feeling it's going to be sad since two of them are sad and the other is... well that might be a spoiler depending on my plot, and an incomplete soundtrack to go off of. The only reason I'm here instead of working my butt off to play catch up is because I'm hoping something sparks my muse (who is currently being so wishy-washy about everything that I seriously wish I could trade them in for a newer model). *sighs* Truth: What makes you saddest about your current novel? Dare: Stop whatever scene you are currently working on. Jump to another place with the same characters from the previous scene and explain how they got from point a to b. (Example: If I was having the hero and big bad have a drunken fist fight in the local pub I might now have them suddenly sitting on top of the hero's car and from there explain what happened.)

I'll take the dare -- my character's biggest fear is that people might not like him, so that makes him anti-social most of the time. My character's biggest need is a person who will encourage him to do what he wants, and make him focus on doing what he wants in the best way possible and not to wait for people's feedback to appreciate his work. Truth: How many times have your characters gotten into a fight? (All kinds of fights applicable.) Dare: I dare you to create a character that does not eat vegetables at all! (Or modify one of your existing characters' eating habits to make them not eat vegetables at all.)

I choose truth (all of my main characters are fallen angels and don't eat at all, unless they drink coffee or eat chocolate)... A lot. The opening paragraph was a fight and then the protagonist needed to die, then another one did. Then my MC decided to fight a fallen angel and got knocked out. Truth: If you had to write a gothic, twisted and very macabre tale about a circus of deformity (cruel, I know, but it makes a very sad and emotional novel), who would the ringleader be and why? Dare: I dare you to make your characters go to the circus and have at least one main character die. (they can be ressurected if you want,)

My story takes place in 1888. Not sure if there was nail polish then, but I'll use that dare for my next story for sure. But for now...I'll take the truth. I'd love to meet a lot of my characters, but I guess I'd pick Timone. Because he's cute, clever, and reminds me of Bean from the Ender books. Also, I'd like to see what he could tell me about myself. (He has powers. Awesome ones.) Truth: If you could kill off one of your characters without affecting the plot in any way, who would it be and why? Dare: Write a scene where a female character hits a male character so hard that he gets some sort of wound. (I'm thinking, scratches with nails, yanks out hair, or kicks in shin with pointy boots.) And then post the scene, if you don't mind. I'm in the mood for some violence. :D

Sorry to disappoint you, but truth. And its a truth that saddens me, but Dylan (younger brother of my MMC). Because, the story's more about my MMC and especially my FMC's relationship, and about their many deep-seated personal problems. And because killing off Dylan would create some MAJOR drama, as well as some deep tragedy. And I have a bit of a weakness for angst. (But also, Seth (My MMC) is a pretty tragic character). Truth: If you could interview your MC, what would be your first official question? Dare: Write a scene in which an simple inanimate object becomes the main focus.

I'll take the truth. I'm too young to really have a lost loved one, but I used to use names of the guys I had crushes on in my writing. I don't anymore unless I really am at a loss for names. But I usually go to behindthename.com for ideas instead. (sorry if these suck, I'm terrible at both of these...) Truth: Have you unintentionally written a character to have traits that you like or have? Dare: Have your characters debate band instruments. At least three some-what obscure band instruments should be mentioned (bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, euphonium etc.)

i know nothing about instruments so truth. when i was first starting out writing i guess, but not so much now. Truth: do any of your characters have quirks that you haven't mentioned is the story, or alternately have you ever created a character entirely around a Quirk? Dare: look to your left, pic an item, put it in your story. BP if you use two items and so on.

They never start out that way, but then it seems as I go further into the story and things either get harder to write or ideas aren't coming as frequently, I find that my characters start talking like I do, or responding to things like I do...but I don't notice till I re-read it! It can be a little agrivating. I would like to believe I'm more creative than that! Okay here we go: Truth: What are you willing to sacrifice in order to fufill your life's dream? Dare: Write a scene that reflects a personal memory of yours (it can be an event, a person, a fragment of you childhood, a toy, etc.) but from the perspective of your characters.

Oh man, I wasn't going to do that dare but then I saw that one of her songs is called "What the Water Gave Me" which is a perfect way for one of my characters to refer to another of my characters...he found her shipwrecked in the ocean, and sometimes refers to her as his "sea gift". So dare, especially since one of my MCs is based way too much on me. Truth: Are any of your characters actually people you know, just with different names? Dare: Defenestrate one of your characters.

I'll take truth though I had to sit through a podcast on the defenestration of cats once ^^ I use to base my characters on real people, but I decided the more I wrote that if it ever ended up in the eyes of that person or they heard that this character was based on them, they might not like my portrayal of them and that could lead to problems... Truth: Do you find yourself trying to plot your novel during times when you should be paying attention to someone? (Like ignoring a teacher's lecture in class?) Dare: Have one character throw something at your MC's head for no real reason... Or bonus points if you think of an awesome reason!

I just wanted to reply to this to say that I have already had someone throw something at one of my MC's...they were in the middle of a shouting match though, so it might not exactly count as "for no reason". (They were having a pointless argument over something they are really on the same side about though, so perhaps that counts as "for no reason")

I take truth. Not really; all my characters are younger than me (and immature). Otherwise, they're enough like me that it doesn't make a difference. (Well, they say write what you know). Truth: Does your plot always twist off course, or do you write to the letter? Dare: Take a break from your plot and make your character's fantasise about themselves, or about something happening to them that they wish would.

Truth: If you could choose one character--from your writing--to hang out with for a day who would it be and what would you do? I think I'll take the dare... But I don't know yet. So I'll answer the truth. I think I would choose my FMC, Flamer, because she can be a pain in the ass. She's super-angsty, but very easily irritated and it would be nice to hang out with someone more issues than me for once. I would then talk and knock some sense into her about her attitude. Honestly, when I started writing her I did not mean for her to have that big an attitude. Truth: Have you ever based any elements of your writing on something fictional if it is not a fanfiction? (for example, some of my ideas come from the Circle of Magic by Tamora Pierce) Dare: Randomly add a popular quote from a movie or book (like, "I am your father") to your story.

UMMMMMMMMM I'm going to wimp out and take truth. This time around, I'm not basing my elements of writing on anything (which is probably why it's so awful) because I'm pushing myself for massive word counts. Usually though, depending on the theme of the story, I try to channel a favorite author. I have a piece I've worked on off and on over the last three years that is greatly inspired by Chuck Palahniuk. I guess I could say that some of my ideas for this novel come from the movie Wanted, even though I thought of the idea before I saw the movie...but I definitly keep images of it in my mind while writing. Now, for my contribution Truth: What's a genre you don't think you could ever write in? Dare: Include a pineapple in your next scene.

Truth -- Back in 2005. But I didn't have the nerve to try it until 2007. Truth: How much of your characters are based on yourself, and how much are they based on people you know? Dare: Throw your character into confusion: take away the thing your character hates; change the thing your character loves; push your character into the spotlight; push them into the street; throw something unlikely on their doorstep, like the police, or their long-lost dog. Try different combinations.

Because apparently my life wasn't busy enough. lol. I like the challenge it presents. And the motivation it gives me to write lots. Truth: What is your favorite word you have so far in your novel? For some reason, I use and even when it is not necessarily needed. * Truth: In what ways are your novel's main character similar to yourself? Dare: Somehow write this into your novel: if there were a chicken (i.e. one of your characters were turned into one randomly; some leftover tofu in the fridge gained sentience and turned into one-- I dunno) in your story, what havoc would it wreak?

I'll take the truth... I can't imagine my novel having a chicken that was a character... -____- For me, both my character and I are very independent. We both are stubborn, and slightly fierce. Truth: What is your average word count on the stats page? Dare: Make one of your characters find a lost puppy and take it with them wherever they go. Bonus points if the puppy is found in a really weird place.

XD And for the dare...I had a mountain lion both be confronted by and then attack one of my characters. Who happens to be a vampire. Who ended up killing and feeding off of the mountain lion. So....bonus points for that? :D Truth: Are any of your characters taking over the MC's spotlight and forcing themselves into MC position? Because, sadly, ALL of my own characters seem to be doing that now. Dare: Have a lengthy, detailed scene involving the preparation and consumption by some of your characters of a meal involving squid.

Truth, yes two of my more minor male characters are taking up all of my main female characters story. I'm waiting for them to get together and walk into the sunset at the end despite the fact they hate each other. As it turns out my minor character isn't so minor and should have been my main character. Oopsie. Truth: Have you ever wished that one of your characters were alive just so you could be friends or have a thing? If you have, did you accidently tell someone about it? What was their reaction? Dare: Have a less intelligent (added or already there) give a long speech about life that ends up making absolutely no sense but they're convinced their words are wise.

The scene in the park where they sneak to the park, then Andrea runs away because of emotions associated with something that happened with a girl she just met, and then she eventually came back to the park, and her friends Seth and Dylan talk to her about it, and make her happy again. That came out pretty well. Truth: What is your favourite recent minor character, and why? Dare: Write a minor injury on a character, like an in-grown toe nail or a split lip.

I'll take truth, because a lot of my characters have suffered major injuries lately and they're tired. My favorite recent character is Dan. He's just pissed off at the world, and he doesn't much care who knows it. But he still has a sense of humor. Truth: have you ended up hating a character you thought you'd love, or loving a character you thought you'd hate? Dare: write a scene about a character brushing his teeth.

Truth I hate one of my baddies. I loved him at first, because he was SUCH a gentleman.. but now, nope. He just threw a character off a roof. Truth: have you ever written a gruesome death in your novel? Dare: Throw someone off a building. Make them survive somehow. (Building's got to be higher than five stories.)

I'll take the truth.... Although I may also end up doing the dare anyway. The death of this one person wasn't too gruesome, they were shot. But they were tortured thoroughly before being shot, and that was described in great detail. Truth: Are there any kisses in your novel? If there are, how many? Dare: Make the nicest person in your novel eat a cat. BP if the character is a vegetarian.

For about 2 years when I was younger, I had a crush on a character from the story I was trying to write. He was tall dark and handsome and had a troubled past. At the time, I thought that was incredibly attractive. Truth: Where do you usually get your inspiration for character names? Dare: Give a character a name that does not fit your story genre. Example: a "George" in a high fantasy novel or an "Aragorn" in a modern setting

I'll take Truth, since my characters' names are kind of all over the map. I keep a list of names I like and when I come across one, I add it to the list. When I'm naming a minor character, I figure out what initial letter I haven't used yet and just come up with something that sounds appropriate. I often give them last names of friends. Truth: have you ever written a scene involving cruelty to animals? Dare: pad a scene with additional dialogue Bonus points if one of the characters has an irritating accent.

I'll take truth. If we're talking about my most pivotal MC, the answer is yes, more or less. I don't like some aspects he has taken on, such as stealing something he shouldn't have because he thought it might be important later. Overall, though, I like what my MC stands for, and the fact that, when it comes down to it, he'll do the right thing. Truth: Have you ever stolen a character concept (MC or otherwise) from another book on purpose? Dare: Have your favorite character inexplicably fall and break his/her leg or arm.

I'd take your dare, but with only 1500 words to go I need to pad and then quit. But I did have two characters break a leg and an arm, respectively, in a car crash. So truth: to my knowledge, I've never stolen a character from a book. A lot of my characters are cobbled together from people I know (her hair, his smart mouth, my interests, etc.). Truth: if you could sum up the theme of your novel in one word (or phrase, if you just can't limit yourself to one word), what would it be? Dare (keeping it easy, folks, since we're in the homestretch): use the word "perspicacious" in your novel.

My Mom could say the most intense, vehement things! It was frightening! (No, she wasn't talking to me.) The point is that it is possible, but probably harder, to write of an intense, violent situation without ever using a standard curse word. Of course, the language has to fit the character. I just think that your attempt might be rewritten and turn out better than one sprinkled with the standard-issue f**k, bastard, s**t, . . .

I have to take Truth, since I have finished my novel. I am going to let it marinate for a while, let my best friend finish reading it, and then start editing in a couple of months. Interesting question, LW! I chose Truth. I actually feel closer to my characters than during NaNo. I'm not committed to chronicling their lives, so they're free to just *be* for a while. I've been having fun exploring whom I like most and why. I learned that my MC is kind of immature, that my foil is a really interesting young woman, and that the guy I intended to be a jerk is actually very lovable. Truth: did you hit 50K before your novel was finished, or did you finish your novel and have to pad it to get to 50K? (Or if you didn't hit 50K by November 30, are you planning to get there?) Dare: Start a new novel. Now.

I guess it was for the motivation. Before NaNo, it took me a year to write 17k words, but in my first NaNo (last August) I wrote 33k. This time I wrote 50k. :) Truth: Have you had any unexpected plot turns? Was there ever a route that you really wanted to take, but, for some reason, couldn't? Dare: Send your characters to a virtual reality. How they get there, what it's like and what happens (and whether the virtual events have an impact on 'real life') is up to you.

Truth. Yes. So many times. I would want to write that XYZ defeated all the demons and escaped, but I suddenly realize that his inability to fight demons constitutes half the screwy situations(ie. conflict) in the story.

Meh, I'll go again. Truth: I do in fact, dislike my main protagonist in one of my many "novels". I kind of meant for her to be disliked in the end, however. She basically becomes a horrible popular girl which is what she wanted (not the horrible part, but the popularity) and in the end her friend since fifth finally breaks friend ties, and yet, protagonist doesn't learn any lesson and continues to be the person she changed herself to be ----------------------------------------------------------------- Truth: If someone were to write a fanfiction about your story once it's published and popular, what would you want the fanfiction to be about? Dare: Have an important character wake up drunk married to a pineapple. An UGLY pineapple. (lol, Ice Age)

I'll take the truth, because I have no way to work ugly pineapples into my story. I already write fanfiction, but if anyone was to write fanfiction for my Probably Will Never Be Written non-fanfics, I'd want it to be about whatever the writer of the fanfic wants, though I would not frown upon continuation 'fics or pairings that seem to make no sense if that writer could make a good case for it. And now... Truth: Which character has been the hardest to write so far? Dare: Have someone in the background wear a really ugly hat. Bonus points if no one notices that the hat is hideous for some reason.

Dare: Have a scene where somebody orders pizza and dresses up as someone else to answer the door as a joke (like in this Youtube video I saw, this guy was Anakin and his friend was a storm Trooper...and the pizza guy didn't seem to notice/mind XD). Bonus points if, like in the video, the pizza guy doesn't even care.

XD I might do the dare too, I dunno, we'll see. :) Truth: Have you ever found something you don't remember writing, and it's SO good? Dare: Use a llama in your story. Right now. Not a picture, a real animal (unless you really really have to use a picture). BP if there is is no reason the llama should be there (like, your not at a petting zoo, etc.). TBP if the MC tries to ride said llama. QBP if the character is too big and gets in trouble for it.

I'd take the dare if the llama can be pink and green, like a watermelon! As for the Truth: I have a lot of Works in Progress that I haven't finished, and I read one of these works. I never have "So Good" moments, I have "Hey, maybe this isn't total crap and I am not a complete failure as a writer" moments. Seeing a short story made me think, "Hey, I don't suck", and made me keep writing despite feeling like I sucked for an entire month. And now... Truth: What has beem your favorite part to write so far? Dare: Take a secondary character, make him or her the new antagonist. BP if said secondary character has done something to the first antagonist just to get rid of them. DBP if you can come up with a really, really wild and crazy reason for this to happen. TBP (and a cookie!) if you make this central to the plot.

Ooh, I take dare! I can totally do that with Luke! (I've been meaning to find a use for him, anyway. He and Alex, my antagonist, don't get along anyway. The only thing linking them is both their best friend, Daniel. They themselves are opposites.) Truth: What is your antagonist's favourite bedroom item? Dare: Write a dialogue between yourself and someone you know who doesn't know about your main character, and talk about him/her as though they were real, and you knew them in real life.

(Regarding my dare: I once did this in my head, and it was a pretty interesting conversation, with the other person growing in concern for my character. It made me feel kinda guilty.)
