In 2006, with my wordcount kind of "eh" and my story flagging badly, I found the Black Friday 10k challenge on this very board. It was the best possible motivator for not only keeping my wordcount where it needed to be, but also making Things Actually Happen (TM) in the story. If you're writing 10k in a day, things WILL happen. And this year, I badly need that push again.
So, beginning at 9 AM EST on Black Friday, November 23nd, I will be here all day, holding word wars, being a dork, and encouraging anyone who wants to take the challenge with me. If you're behind, here's your opportunity to get caught up! If you're on pace or ahead but, like me, know that you're nowhere near done with your story, this is your chance to take a huge chunk of it out at once.
Go forth, eat your fill on Turkey Day, and if you'd like to join me here, I'll see you the next morning, bright an early.
10k? I'm assuming that means to write 10,000 words in one day? That has to be wrong, doesn't it? It's not possible to write that much in one day. I only managed to reach the absurd NaNoWriMo standard of 1,667 once, and that took me six grueling hours in the library. I couldn't write 10,000 words in one day with a gun to my head. Seriously. I'm working as hard and as fast as I can and I'm only up to 18,308 words total. You folks can actually do this... write 10,000 words in a single day? I'm in awe. You must not have children or a full time job... or you're superwriters. I'm totally in awe and still imagining that I must have misunderstood. You'll all read this and laugh. She thought it meant to write 10,000 words in a single day!
You folks can't actually do that... can you?
Sheesh... I haven't even figured out how to upload a photo, yet!
I'm afraid that you understood that correctly, 10K words in one day. I made 3K and thought that was good, so I wasn't traumatized. Many people made more than 10K during the challenge.
well I write about 2k/h and I have an average writing speed. No kids, have school and other responsibilities. To find 5 hours in a day is pretty daunting, but dividing it around the day and a bit less sleep I get there. With weekends I can write freely. 3 hours morning and 2 more in the evening, so I can go and do other fun stuff.
Maybe it's your inner editor that has made it difficult for you to write more. I think you can do it (if you have the time) but that maybe you just like to take your time to analyse a scene.
It's a little confusing writing a bunch of words in one day ABOUT one day. Seriously. I think that a total of three of my chapters are just about one day.
Ok - I'll probably regret this, but I'm in!!! REALLY need the extra boost if I'm gonna be anywhere near winning. Hmm, will this be even possible for me? Guess we'll see! It'll certainly get my plot moving at whatever cost necessary, and I need that too.
Hi, I'll join the Black Friday Challenge. I probably won't start at 9 a.m. (who knows), but I have much writing to do. I pulled a double-jolt today (3597 words) and plan to push it tomorrow as well. Knowing I'm not alone helps. I'm trying to not just put "filler' in to run out the word count clock, but I'm trying to time the action of the story so it will end neatly, all wrapped with ribbon, at 50,000 or thereabouts. Happy Thanksgiving today. Tomorrow, may the odds be ever in your favor!
I don't need 10K today to keep on target, I need about 3K, Thanksgiving came and went without a single word! But seeting a 10K goal is great! Thanks for this outrageous suggestion!
I put about 30K of my words in the word graveyard yesterday. Story was struggling so I went back to where it had been good and started again. The 10K will be good to push me towards the end of the story.
Too bad I have to work that day! I could really use the boost. But I might join you before and after my shirt. I'll be writing on my lunch break as well.
Oh my god. If my family wasn't holding their Thanksgiving on Friday instead I would SO be down for this DX Good luck, I'll see if I can make it by for at least a couple hours.
Oooh, my family already celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, and I hit my main goal and whatnot, but I might hop over here, once the time comes, to get some more writing done. I'm too competitive for my own good. xD
I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing Friday, but I am so seriously behind this sounds like a really good idea...So I think I'm going to have to say I'm in. :)
This sounds like a remarkably good thing to help pull my story back ahead. I hate being this far behind, so a forward push would be good. :p People keep offering incentives if I finish this thing (I guess they don't understand that I *enjoy* writing) so getting from the 30,000 mark to the 40,000 mark would be really nice. ^^
I'll be at work also, but I take my laptop with me to work on my breaks. I usually get somewhere between 220 and 350 done if I don't get bothered by coworkers talking. Good luck everyone!
I'm definitely in. Although I'll be on no sleep from shopping at midnight. Why do stores deprive us of our sleep? Aren't they supposed to open at like 5am, and not midnight? Pffft.
i will try i just got close to the word count for yesterday and plan on writing most of the day, i do not know if i will make the 10k challenge but i am hoping to get close; i know my baby is no where near where i want it to get if that makes any sense =)
It's ba-ack!

Yes! I'm so in. I need the boost. Thanks for this.
In. All kinds of in.
In. In. In.
so the challenge is to write 10K in one day? That's it?

haha i wished i had written 10k on that day but i didn't have time =( i'm really behind and i'm desperately trying to catch up
Don't worry! You have 33k words done already, don't you? That's 33k more than 0! You've got more than half a novel on your hands!
TY for the inspiration!
No worries, I also can't see its possible xD
@just Janis

good luck with everything :)
Maybe you can find this useful:

There, author Rachel Aaron explains how she went from writing 2000 words a day to writing 10000 words a day.
Never not in.
This is EXACTLY what I need. Even if I don't get to write 10k I should still be able to get a little ahead!
Don't count me out!
Starting Now!
It's a little confusing writing a bunch of words in one day ABOUT one day. Seriously. I think that a total of three of my chapters are just about one day.
I totally would do this... but I have to work for eight hours on Friday -_-
Me too T_T I'll go for a 10K Saturday to make up for it, followed hopefully by a 10K Sunday because I'm quite far behind!
Yeah, I completely missed this, but I'm inspired for at least a 5k day on Sunday! Any takers???
7.5k? ? Going..going...
Sure, I'll try for a 5k on Sunday. Count me in. Maybe I can finish my novel this weekend
totally with you for Sunday! Ack!
I'm all in for 5k on sunday :)
Sure. I'm in. I am waaaaaay behind. I missed this challenge too.
I'm going for 10k Saturday and 5K Sunday! I'm in!
Blimey well done - give me a hand if you can do that many, I'm in awe!
Yes! Me, too! I'm up for the challenge. I am behind, but I haven't given up. ( NaNo is inspiring all kinds of personal growth over here...)
Abby
I am sooo in! My wordcount is critically low so this is just what I need :)
This!
I'm about to do some word churning now though--while the family is busy planning shopping trips and the boyfriend's playing videogames. :D
Yes! Maybe not 9:00AM though...I'm not the earliest riser on the planet.
Totally in!
Thank god for no school on friday :)
I totally feel you there. School made me fall behind sorely.....
awww man... i so wanna do this but i'm currently still catching up on school... today is my big writing day XD
I'm in if I can! (and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!)
This is exactly what I what I need to do to catch up
Make a Chatzy Room for this please.
Done. I'm so far behind that without at least one 10k day, I'm not going to make the 50k goal. Let's do this.
I agree!
In! I need this.
Lets do this!!
Ok - I'll probably regret this, but I'm in!!!
REALLY need the extra boost if I'm gonna be anywhere near winning. Hmm, will this be even possible for me? Guess we'll see! It'll certainly get my plot moving at whatever cost necessary, and I need that too.
I'm in.
I have to work until 5 pm :( and probably all weekend but plan on making my last push with an all night session if need be early next week.
Hi,
I'll join the Black Friday Challenge.
I probably won't start at 9 a.m. (who knows), but I have much writing to do.
I pulled a double-jolt today (3597 words) and plan to push it tomorrow as well. Knowing I'm not alone helps. Happy Thanksgiving today.
Tomorrow, may the odds be ever in your favor!
Sounds good. Even if I don't make 10K this will help me stay in the seat.
In squared. We got this!
I can't believe I'm doing this...but I'm in.
I am in.. gonna sit in my mountain home in the forest and concentrate on getting this baby done!
I'll try, but i'll probably only get to about 6k max...
ah well, that's a booooost!
So wanna say yes but got crazy schedule to get through. Gonna throw in half a hat with a mega I Think I Can.
In. Great idea.
So in for this! :) My word count needs this so badly it's not even funny...
I am starting right now!
I'm so in. :)
I wanna try! Let's do this!
Someone give me a motivation speech....
I'm in. taking the challenge so fast! i was actually already planning on doing a 24 hour writing session today starting half an hour ago, so... yep.
I don't need 10K today to keep on target, I need about 3K, Thanksgiving came and went without a single word! But seeting a 10K goal is great! Thanks for this outrageous suggestion!
Not only in it, but just hit 10.3 k for today! Yay!
I saw it this morning, but was afraid to commit, and then I did it!
Oh yeah. I'm in.
I got my 10k in today. Now, I have about 4k left to go and I hope to wrap that up tomorrow. Looks like I'll make it!
I did this without even knowing about the challenge! 11101 words on Friday! Woo-hoo!
Little late to the party, but I've got Wednesday off of work and all to myself. I think I'll implement your challenge then.
It's kind of hard to do that when you have a lot of homework to do.
Cool Idea!
Yeah!! I was looking for a challenge.

I don't even need to leave the house
Black Friday Online Shoppin!!
I'm all in for this!
See you on Friday! Highly doubt I'll hit 10k, but I could probably get 5k or 7k out of this little push.
I'm in!! Hopefully more than 10k, but 10k should finish me off regardless!
Oh yes, I desperately need this. I'm up for the Black Friday Challenge (perhaps the only 10k challenge I can complete).
More than 2k in. I can do this! I need the words.
Edit: I'm sprinting my way to the 5000th word. Halfway there, and it's only the afternoon. :"D
I did it! I wrote 10k!
Yep. I'm in!
I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing Friday, but I am so seriously behind this sounds like a really good idea...So I think I'm going to have to say I'm in. :)
I'll be there with you Miri. Who knows... if you're lucky, I might even brave hometown traffic and say hi. :) (Wonder if the tea room's open Friday?)

Good luck everyone!
What a great challenge. Since I'm not leaving the house for Black Friday sales, this is a great way to meet my goal of finishing by Sunday night.
Good Luck to everyone and Keep Writing
I think I like this challenge better than trying to go to the mall before/after work!
I'm in! :) I probably won't get 10k, but no harm in trying, i guess.
Ooh, this is exactly what I need! I'm in. =]
I'm definitely in. Although I'll be on no sleep from shopping at midnight. Why do stores deprive us of our sleep? Aren't they supposed to open at like 5am, and not midnight? Pffft.
I'm in.
Midnight = five more hours to steal your money
i will try i just got close to the word count for yesterday and plan on writing most of the day, i do not know if i will make the 10k challenge but i am hoping to get close; i know my baby is no where near where i want it to get if that makes any sense =)
