Welcome to those of you who own horses and/or ponies, or who who just adore these wonderful creatures. If you have any stories regarding the equine world, post it here.
I was just coming to see if an equestrian thread had been started. You beat me!
I guess I ought to introduce myself. I have two horses, a 21 year old mix-breed pony (in my user image) named Sassy and a 13 year old Appaloosa gelding named Kando. For health reasons I've been prevented from riding much over the past two and a half years. Sassy has COPD and really prefers life as a pasture puff, but I'm trying to find a way to get Kando the exercise and attention he needs. This year for NaNo I plan on writing a horsey youth novel. I haven't done that in so long, nor read anything of the sort in years, so I picked up a few books in that genre to read. Now it's time to hit up Amazon and the library again for more.
I'm here again. No real horses in my life, but my horsey characters seem real to me. This year's NaNo will feature a dressage mare, Sunset Rose, and a prince's mare, Stardancer. They were also characters in last year's NaNo along with several other horses. They're very minor characters because my stories are fairy tales, they're about the people. But, without the horses, my characters would have to do a lot of walking. :)
I have no idea what I'm writing yet, but horses will be included if they fit! In real life I lease a Morgan mare with an attitude problem, who I love very much. She is 9 and bay with white markings, and we enjoy 4-h shows with the talents of a racehorse. :) Sadly, this is our last year of 4-h, but we will be on to bigger things!
I don't own any horses, but I do volunteer at a horsefarm. Right now, I'm not doing much with horses, I go there every Thursday afternoon after my paying job, and do the garbage. Hey, it may not be the best job, but it gets me to the farm and it gets me near horses.
That's the spirit. (: If there comes a time when I don't have horses directly in my care, you will still likely find me trying my hardest to spend time near those belonging to others. I could live without riding for the rest of my life as long as I can still hang around, watch and occasionally snuggle with some ponies.
My baby girl is the darling in my user image. She's a five year old OTTB, as sweet as can be but a bit of a handful at times. And she's got a sense of humor. Marley enjoys helping me muck out her stall, she holds saddle pads and brushes for me, has been known to pick up whips and whack humans with them, she gives kisses, she knows how to get the lid off her treat jar and I'm quite certain that she knows how to unlock the gate to her paddock. She's my special baby girl, she's in training to be a big bad eventer pony!
Today I did my usual Thursday chore, but I had my youngest daughter and her friend with me. We started doing the garbage, but then the owner of the farm took them aside, and asked if they could sweep the stall area. (You see, there is a big event coming this Sunday, and the owner wants to get the farm as neat as possible.) So I finished doing the garbage, then did some sweeping myself in another area of the farm. Needless to say, instead of the usual hour or so, we were there for almost two hours.
After we were done, the owner (let's call her Tatiana) had a little surprise for us. A ticket for four to a movie. Wow, thank you. Bad news for me: The movie is for an exclusive show on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. So why is this bad news? I'm working this Saturday. Damn! Oh, well, my three daughters, and my youngest daughter's friend are going on Saturday morning. I don't mind missing it.
Two new horses at the farm: Lucy and Georgina (not sure about the last name, I'll have to check again next time I'm there), both mares, both Canadians.
Hey everyone! I don't own a horse myself but I am currently riding on my college's team competing IHSA. I love and wouldn't trade it for the world. It gives me my daily fix of barn without having to worry about the cost of ownership, which would be hard for me since I AM in college.
I always joke with my wife that if we ever win a lottery (*ROTFLMAO*) I'd buy a horse farm, and I'd have throughbreds, and maybe some other breeds (Friesans, Gypsies, Canadians... I don't know.
I share 4 and own one. (Starting from the smallest) - I have an Icelandic, 11.3h. He's a little git! He was bought for the owner's grandkids but bucks them off. He's a little bronco but hasn't suceeded in getting me off yet. My usual ride is the 13.2h gypsy cob mare, she's cheeky but the quickest out of the bunch. We love having a good gallop. The 14.2h lightweight cob is a wimpy sweetheart. Then the 16.1 heavy weight cob is the armchair!
My baby is a 2 year old arab x cob. (In my pic.) I couldn't ask for a better horse, he has a fantastic temperament and I look forward to breaking him in next year. I want to do endurance on him, however given he popped over the 3'7 electric fence to get into the winter field (4 times!) I also plan on jumping him for fun. We think he'll make about 16.1h
Yea, I was rather surprised to say the least! I really couldn't ask for a better horse. He has the most beautiful baroque movement and for a 2 year old he's practically bombproof - which when you consider that I got him as a completely wild colt this April. He'd been dumped in a field and left to starve because he's the wrong colour.. So his previous owners beat him, meaning he was terrified of people when I got him. Now, he's a star! =D
What a disappointment! Today was supposed to be the day of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Event, but it rained most of the day, and not very many people showed up. My wife and I were there from about eight o'clock in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon. We spent most of the time around a camp-type fire, talking with other staff and volunteers. I did manage to do the following jobs: groom one horse, tack up another, take the burrs out of another horse's tail, give hay to two goats and a sheep... A lot of people brought their own horses, so there were quite a few trailers on the farm.
Overall, a big let-down. Nothing at all like the event we held a couple of years ago for a girl who died when she got kicked by a horse at another farm. You could tell that everyone was disappointed just by hearing them talk.
Before my wife and I left the farm on Sunday, I asked Tatiana (the owner) if I could continue to do the garbage and recycling, thinking that she'd have co-op students doing it. She said, Sure, go ahead. Yay! Now it may not be appealing taking out garbage and recycling to the curb, but at least I'll be around horses. So I'm there every Thursday afternoon... and hopefully I can interact with some of the horses.
Greetings! I was hoping to find an EOD group, and I'm happy to find that I have! :D I haven't decided what I'll be writing, either, but if horses can fit, I will certainly include them. Since I usually write medieval fantasy, horses USUALLY come into play :3 Maybe I'll include an annoying talking horse xD
IRL, I ride and compete on horseback, and I own one horse, an Arabian mare named Watermelon ;p She's the one in my photo - yes, we jump :3 We also race on the track, run through speed events, compete in dressage, and hack it out on the trails. I've had her since she was a weanling, and in my oh, so humble opinion, she's the bestest ;p
Looking forward to the horsey stories! Looking forward to real horsemanship in the writing, as well :3
What a miserable day to do the garbage today: rainy, drizzy, cold. It's been raining here the last few days, and thankfully, it's supposed to stop on the weekend. I picked up my youngest daughter and her friend from school, and took them to the farm. Stephanie's friend, Sammy, drove the Kubota, and did a pretty good job, even though she had never done it before. Because of the event on Sunday, there was more garbage and recycling than usual. After we were done, we said 'hi' to some of the horses.
Hi everyone! I am leasing an adorable red dun quarter horse named James. He isn't the easiest horse to ride, but I love him anyway, and he has the best personality. I ride mostly western, though I can also ride english. I'm not super competitive about showing, but I have competed IHSA, and I love the casual inhouse shows at my barn.
This is my second year doing nano, although it is the first year with the lease, so I am interested to see how that impacts my writing time. I don't currently have any plans for horses in my novel, but I am sure they will sneak in there somehow :)
Hooray for a fellow leaser! I've been leasing my horse for almost 4 years now, and it's definitely a good medium for those of us who can't afford to own. :)
Hello! I have a six year old buckskin roan QH mare. Unfortunately we are separated for a few years. She is staying at my in-laws farm while we live overseas during my husband's military tour.
So, anyone here putting horses in their NaNo. I am, because my novel will be about trailriding, and murder on that trailride. (It's a three or four or five day trailride, don't know which yet) That's a far cry from the science fiction (other worlds, aliens) that I've done for the past eight years, but I wanted to try 'something completely different.'
I have a little over a week to get my act in gear. I don't want to do it like last year when I said I'd do something with horses and riding, but I went back to my aliens. This year, I'm going to put my paw down (...er, I mean my foot) and do it.
I'm so glad there's an equestrain thread! I ride a bay off the track Thorougbred gelding named George. He's pretty darn big, which is why I get to ride him most of the time, since I'm pretty tall and most of the people at my barn aren't. :D He's pretty green still, but he's been doing so well! This time last year, he'd start trotting as soon as he got in the ring (a couple of times he cantered), stumble every couple of seconds, wiggle and dance around until he was trotting sideways, tug so hard on the reins he made my fingers bleed (I still have the scars), race the other horses when we cantered, run through jumps, and just generally be an idiot. So much improvement! He's cantering collectedly, and does the prettiest sitting trot in the world :)
Haha, sorry about all of that! I just don't have many people I can ramble on about him to Anyway, nice to meet you all :)
I love your user image! I'm pretty surprised to see another nerdfighter in here. Have you noticed that not a lot of horse people are nerds? It really doesn't make sense to me, because horse people and nerds have a major trait in common: the ability to be completely obsessed with things!

That's talent there. And as an added bonus he has no fear.
