Re: The Horse and Pony Group

I was just coming to see if an equestrian thread had been started. You beat me!

I guess I ought to introduce myself. I have two horses, a 21 year old mix-breed pony (in my user image) named Sassy and a 13 year old Appaloosa gelding named Kando. For health reasons I've been prevented from riding much over the past two and a half years. Sassy has COPD and really prefers life as a pasture puff, but I'm trying to find a way to get Kando the exercise and attention he needs. This year for NaNo I plan on writing a horsey youth novel. I haven't done that in so long, nor read anything of the sort in years, so I picked up a few books in that genre to read. Now it's time to hit up Amazon and the library again for more.

I'm here again. No real horses in my life, but my horsey characters seem real to me. This year's NaNo will feature a dressage mare, Sunset Rose, and a prince's mare, Stardancer. They were also characters in last year's NaNo along with several other horses. They're very minor characters because my stories are fairy tales, they're about the people. But, without the horses, my characters would have to do a lot of walking. :)

I have no idea what I'm writing yet, but horses will be included if they fit! In real life I lease a Morgan mare with an attitude problem, who I love very much. She is 9 and bay with white markings, and we enjoy 4-h shows with the talents of a racehorse. :) Sadly, this is our last year of 4-h, but we will be on to bigger things!

I don't own any horses, but I do volunteer at a horsefarm. Right now, I'm not doing much with horses, I go there every Thursday afternoon after my paying job, and do the garbage. Hey, it may not be the best job, but it gets me to the farm and it gets me near horses.

That's the spirit. (: If there comes a time when I don't have horses directly in my care, you will still likely find me trying my hardest to spend time near those belonging to others. I could live without riding for the rest of my life as long as I can still hang around, watch and occasionally snuggle with some ponies.

My baby girl is the darling in my user image. She's a five year old OTTB, as sweet as can be but a bit of a handful at times. And she's got a sense of humor. Marley enjoys helping me muck out her stall, she holds saddle pads and brushes for me, has been known to pick up whips and whack humans with them, she gives kisses, she knows how to get the lid off her treat jar and I'm quite certain that she knows how to unlock the gate to her paddock. She's my special baby girl, she's in training to be a big bad eventer pony!

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

Today I did my usual Thursday chore, but I had my youngest daughter and her friend with me. We started doing the garbage, but then the owner of the farm took them aside, and asked if they could sweep the stall area. (You see, there is a big event coming this Sunday, and the owner wants to get the farm as neat as possible.) So I finished doing the garbage, then did some sweeping myself in another area of the farm. Needless to say, instead of the usual hour or so, we were there for almost two hours.

After we were done, the owner (let's call her Tatiana) had a little surprise for us. A ticket for four to a movie. Wow, thank you. Bad news for me: The movie is for an exclusive show on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. So why is this bad news? I'm working this Saturday. Damn! Oh, well, my three daughters, and my youngest daughter's friend are going on Saturday morning. I don't mind missing it.

Two new horses at the farm: Lucy and Georgina (not sure about the last name, I'll have to check again next time I'm there), both mares, both Canadians.

Hey everyone! I don't own a horse myself but I am currently riding on my college's team competing IHSA. I love and wouldn't trade it for the world. It gives me my daily fix of barn without having to worry about the cost of ownership, which would be hard for me since I AM in college.

Hey,

I share 4 and own one.
(Starting from the smallest) - I have an Icelandic, 11.3h. He's a little git! He was bought for the owner's grandkids but bucks them off. He's a little bronco but hasn't suceeded in getting me off yet.
My usual ride is the 13.2h gypsy cob mare, she's cheeky but the quickest out of the bunch. We love having a good gallop.
The 14.2h lightweight cob is a wimpy sweetheart.
Then the 16.1 heavy weight cob is the armchair!

My baby is a 2 year old arab x cob. (In my pic.) I couldn't ask for a better horse, he has a fantastic temperament and I look forward to breaking him in next year. I want to do endurance on him, however given he popped over the 3'7 electric fence to get into the winter field (4 times!) I also plan on jumping him for fun. We think he'll make about 16.1h

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

What a disappointment! Today was supposed to be the day of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Event, but it rained most of the day, and not very many people showed up. My wife and I were there from about eight o'clock in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon. We spent most of the time around a camp-type fire, talking with other staff and volunteers. I did manage to do the following jobs: groom one horse, tack up another, take the burrs out of another horse's tail, give hay to two goats and a sheep... A lot of people brought their own horses, so there were quite a few trailers on the farm.

Overall, a big let-down. Nothing at all like the event we held a couple of years ago for a girl who died when she got kicked by a horse at another farm. You could tell that everyone was disappointed just by hearing them talk.

Yea, I was rather surprised to say the least! I really couldn't ask for a better horse. He has the most beautiful baroque movement and for a 2 year old he's practically bombproof - which when you consider that I got him as a completely wild colt this April. He'd been dumped in a field and left to starve because he's the wrong colour.. So his previous owners beat him, meaning he was terrified of people when I got him. Now, he's a star! =D

Before my wife and I left the farm on Sunday, I asked Tatiana (the owner) if I could continue to do the garbage and recycling, thinking that she'd have co-op students doing it. She said, Sure, go ahead. Yay! Now it may not be appealing taking out garbage and recycling to the curb, but at least I'll be around horses. So I'm there every Thursday afternoon... and hopefully I can interact with some of the horses.

Greetings! I was hoping to find an EOD group, and I'm happy to find that I have! :D I haven't decided what I'll be writing, either, but if horses can fit, I will certainly include them. Since I usually write medieval fantasy, horses USUALLY come into play :3 Maybe I'll include an annoying talking horse xD

IRL, I ride and compete on horseback, and I own one horse, an Arabian mare named Watermelon ;p She's the one in my photo - yes, we jump :3 We also race on the track, run through speed events, compete in dressage, and hack it out on the trails. I've had her since she was a weanling, and in my oh, so humble opinion, she's the bestest ;p

Looking forward to the horsey stories! Looking forward to real horsemanship in the writing, as well :3

What a miserable day to do the garbage today: rainy, drizzy, cold. It's been raining here the last few days, and thankfully, it's supposed to stop on the weekend.
I picked up my youngest daughter and her friend from school, and took them to the farm. Stephanie's friend, Sammy, drove the Kubota, and did a pretty good job, even though she had never done it before. Because of the event on Sunday, there was more garbage and recycling than usual. After we were done, we said 'hi' to some of the horses.

Hi everyone! I am leasing an adorable red dun quarter horse named James. He isn't the easiest horse to ride, but I love him anyway, and he has the best personality. I ride mostly western, though I can also ride english. I'm not super competitive about showing, but I have competed IHSA, and I love the casual inhouse shows at my barn.

This is my second year doing nano, although it is the first year with the lease, so I am interested to see how that impacts my writing time. I don't currently have any plans for horses in my novel, but I am sure they will sneak in there somehow :)

I'm so glad there's an equestrain thread! I ride a bay off the track Thorougbred gelding named George. He's pretty darn big, which is why I get to ride him most of the time, since I'm pretty tall and most of the people at my barn aren't. :D He's pretty green still, but he's been doing so well! This time last year, he'd start trotting as soon as he got in the ring (a couple of times he cantered), stumble every couple of seconds, wiggle and dance around until he was trotting sideways, tug so hard on the reins he made my fingers bleed (I still have the scars), race the other horses when we cantered, run through jumps, and just generally be an idiot. So much improvement! He's cantering collectedly, and does the prettiest sitting trot in the world :)

Haha, sorry about all of that! I just don't have many people I can ramble on about him to Anyway, nice to meet you all :)

GotReins - That reminds me of when I was in lessons. I often got to ride Riley because she was tall and I've got really long legs. I looked rather silly on the Arabian I was put on for the first lesson. She was a 20 year-old retired polo pony, but no one had told her that! She was lively and sweet-tempered and I loved her to death! She made me take back my dislike of Thoroughbreds! :) She had the most beautiful trot and fast! I loved riding her and was really disappointed any time I didn't get her.

It really doesn't make sense to me, because horse people and nerds have a major trait in common: the ability to be completely obsessed with things!

A few horses were in the stalls, so we said hello. That's about it. Pretty routine, I know. Hopefully, I'll get to ride sometime.

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

I'm a working student at a dressage farm that has 30+ horses.

Personally, I own two. My old lady, Nagg, is a buckskin mare who has been with me since my freshman year of high school. She has more quirks and issues than any horse I've ever run across. In her younger days she used to canter backwards away from jumps and refused to face the correct way in her tie stall at fair. Now that she is older, she's mellowed to the point we actually use her for the therapeutic riding program.

My other mare is Nagg's daughter, Dilemma. Dilemma and I had a long road. She was born with really severely contracted tendons and couldn't walk until she was two and half months old. Thanks to some corrective shoeing she is now five years old and full of life and fun. I can't imagine the world without her in it.

In addition to my girls, my heart and soul belongs to one of the stable horses. His name is Spooner and he is the most wonderful horses I've ever met. He is unofficially mine and since he isn't suitable as a lesson horse he earn his keep working as a nanny for the foals and younger horses.

All three of my kids are Hanoverian crosses.

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

Yay the topic is back this year. Well short introduction;

I own two Welsh part-bred fillies. My youngest one is Roos. 19 months old now and really my pride and glory. Bought her as a three-month-old. She's a real eauty, but has been quite ill this summer. So gave me a lot of trouble. But we've fought through it and got a special connection in it. She's really people-minded and everything I'm at the field, call her name and see her galopping up to the gate, she gives me goosebumbs ^_^

Though, there's my other pride. Lies is an almost three year old (will be early 2012). So by that time we'll brake her under saddle. Also she'll be trained to be showed next season and will be put in foal.

As you can see I'm not a fanatic rider anymore. Used to compete in dressage, but my last competition horse was sold last spring. With college and everything, I can't find the time to train for competition.
But besides dressage I'm into breeding as well. Welsh pony's and KWPN (the Royal Dutch Sporthorse) actually. I'm really happy I can afford these two youngsters as a student and looking forward to my first foal in 2013.

Most recent pic of my allmost full-fuzzy monsters:
http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn246/AniekR/Lies%20en%20Roos/2011-10-30/Img_1877.jpg
Gave them some extra attention yesterday, since I'm going to be quite busy during NaNo

Oh and btw, no horses in my novel.

My wife and I were at the farm this evening, helping out with a Halloween event. We got four ponies and put them in the sandring where kids decorated them. I didn't want to go at first because I was in a grumpy mood (I had to get some repairs down on my van and it cost me $$$), but my wife persuaded me, telling me I needed horse therapy. She was right; whenever I'm in a sour mood being around horses helps me a lot.

Yeah, I know, it's short, but it was one of those quiet afternoons. The only person we saw was a young lady who gives lessons on Thursday afternoons.

Another afternoon at the farm, this time just me and my daughter. She drove the Kubota while I loaded up the garbage. When we were done we said hello to some of the horses, including the foal born earlier in the year. He and his mother, and his 'big brother' were in the shelter (the nursery where Athena had dropped the foal). We couldn't believe how the little one (I don't think he has a name yet) has grown. He sure wasn't shy because he came right over to the fence, and a little later his mother (who used to be pretty shy not too long ago) came over. We took some pictures of the foal which I'd love to show, but I have to idea how to transfer pictures from my cell phone to the forums.

On Saturday my wife and daughter are going to help out at the farm, but unfortunately I have to work, and I also have to go to the library.

I've finally killed my first character in my novel, with more deaths to come. (Well, it's supposed to be a murder/mystery, so there'll be murders, and it'll be a mystery until the killer is revealed at the end.)

On Sunday, my wife, two of my three daughters and I went to the farm, thinking we were going to help pitch hay. But we didn't have to do that, so we just visited the horses. They had horses getting ready for a trail ride, and one of them (Where are you going, Sandra?) got loose, so I casually got here and took her back where she belonged. My daughters wanted to see the foal, but he was out in the field, so we couldn't.

Thursday afternoon at the farm with my daughter, doing the usual chore. Not too bad out today; a bit chilly, but sunny. My wife showed up after she was done with her job, just as we started. After we were done we helped Tatiana carry a huge pine tree from the trailer to the deck. (It was what you'd call a pre-Christmas tree). And then she wanted my wife and me to put in a light bulb (one of those big, roundish bulbs) by the sign. That meant climbing up a ladder, and I have this phobia about climbing ladders. So my wife had to do it, while I held the ladder.

Looks like we might be helping (horse-wise, that is) on December 10, 12, and January 14. I'm working on the 10th, but it's in the afternoon, so I'm happy.

I had a busy day on Saturday. I was up at 3:30 to get ready for work, then I put in nine hours driving around, doing deliveries. I finally got home at 2:00 (Had lunch out). My wife was at the farm helping with pony rides, because there was a big party going on (a company, I think, and the people brought their kids to play games). At first I wasn't thinking of going because I was tired, but then I went anyway, and helped out a bit with the pony rides. I felt like I didn't do too much, just led little kids on a pony three times around a part of the arena. (The other half was taken up by various games.)

Thursday - getting the garbage ready for the next day, with help from Stephanie who drove the Kubota.

Three new animals - a horse (Canadian), a Welsh pony, and a donkey. A donkey? That's a new one. We've had sheep there, goats, chickens (including one nasty rooster). There are two rather shy goats there, Jilly and Tilly, and now Eli, an eight-month old donkey. A shy one. Stephanie and I went into the pen to 'introduce' ourselves, but he didn't want to have anything to do with us, so we respected his wishes and left.

If folks are reading these posts, my question for those who own horses is: What other animals do you have on your farm?

On Thursday my daughter and I... oh, you know what we did (see posts above).

Tatiana has five Canadians now. Since Canadians are black, you have to look at other features to distinguish them from each other.

Since people aren't reading these posts I'll refrain from asking any more questions, although I am tempted. This one has to do with horse's idiosyncracies...

I love having a thread all to myself... or almost all to myself.

The usual Thursday chores. At one point my wife, who works there as a camp director (if I haven't already mentioned it) told me to take a break and watch while Tatiana put the horses out in the snowy field (well, one of the three sections). It was really neat to see the horses walk out, and really enjoy themselves in the snow. They were running, bucking, and rolling in the snow.

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

I was at the farm three out of four days last week. On Thursday, my daughter and I did the usual chore... taking the garbage to the 'curb' (quotation marks because there really isn't a curb.)

On Saturday I went to the farm myself because my wife had choir practice (she works with little kids who sing in the choir) and she would be there about an hour later. So a couple of other volunteers helped me get three ponies (well, two pony-sized ponies and a larger pony - remember, a pony is any horse under 14.2 hh) ready for kids coming to the farm for a birthday party. We had someone coming at 11:00, another at 1:00, and one more group at 3:00.

On Sunday there was just one birthday party at 1:00, so it wasn't too hectic. My wife and I were there, taking care of things, and everything went smoothly. On both Saturday and Sunday it was cold, but sunny, so we took the horses out, and took the kids around the property (down the hill and back up again and over to the apple and pear trees.)

I made friends with the donkey, Eli, and he let me touch him. He is still shy, and looks rather sad, but I talked to him (I seem to have that soft, soothing voice that could probably tame a tiger (but I wouldn't try it)) and he let me stroke his back and neck, and the top of his head (very furry now because of the cold.) I hope to pick up his legs some time but I'm not going to rush it.

I find it really amazing that the two goats on the farm want to have nothing to do with me, but that's all right. I'm more interested in the horses, anyway.

Yes, my daughter and I are still doing the garbage on Thursday afternoons, but I don't feel like writing about that unless something interesting happens at the farm.

Yesterday, my wife and I went to the farm for the annual get together for staff and volunteers. So after talk and snacks we went up to the arena where they had horses and ponies. My wife rode Sunman, then I rode him... bareback. Then I brought Whiskey in from the stall. (The stalls are right next to the arena... or maybe Is hould say the arena is attached right next to the stalls) I rode him bareback as well. My wife tried him, but didn't feel too comfortable on him. She said she liked Sunman better, and I said, if we were going on a trail ride, for example, I would pick Whiskey any day.

Lots of fun.

Oh well...

My wife got a call from Tatiana yesterday asking her there are pony/horse rides today, so we went to the farm after I finished work. (Up at 3:30 in the morning, working eight hours, home for lunch, and then to the farm for three hours. Sounds like fun, doesn't it?) Four ponies, and five bigger horses were used, and the kids all had fun.

I know I haven't been here for a while, but I decided to post because the farm had some bad news. Last Monday, one of the horses, Desmond, had to be put down because he had a twisted colon, so I guess there wasn't anything they could do for him. And another horse, Montgomery, got a really bad cut on his hind leg (near side) and it didn't look like he would make it.
But when my wife, my oldest daughter, and I visited the farm yesterday we looked in on him, and it looks like he is recuperating in a stall. One of the volunteers said he was accident prone, so she wasn't too surprised.

Other than that my youngest daughter and I are doing our usual Thursday chore. I also visit Eli, the donkey, whenever I'm there.

My daughter and I were at the farm today, doing the usual chore. My wife was already there, having driven there from a school she works at. Tatyana was outside, with Montgomery, and she said he needed some fresh air (see above re: Montgomery). My wife led him around, giving him some exercise. I did get to lead him back into the stall ( he was moving pretty good, and I had to tell him to slow down), and my wife and I put some hay in the hay net for him.

Every time we drove outside with the garbage bags and recycling in the Kubota they followed us along the fence. After we were all done we went over to say 'Hi.'

Okay, I'm dropping in again. Don't get to the NaNo board that much outside of NaNo. Busy.
And Trekherham, it's nice to read all about what you're doing, but it doesn't give much space for conversation or anything.

About bareback riding. I've done it a lot, especially when I was younger and we were fooling around with the ponies a lot. Had some good times! One of my competition horses was a proper 'fun' horse as well. Though he was 1.73m (not good with hands) tall. I'd just fetch him from the field, tie the leadrope as reins and hoped on. You could do anything with him.
Unfortunately heard the new owner had to put him down last December, due to an injury. He wasn't that old yet, but well.

And about my own ponies. The big one is turning 3 this month and I'm trying to find some time to start breaking her in. I'm also temporarely training a dressage horse for it's owner to be sold, so that's taking up a lot of time. She's a really nice horse though. Was fun to do some dressage training again, but hope we'll find a great place for here soon too ;)

@Thekherham: People are reading these posts! (At least I am--I really enjoy them) Since you're looking for horse stories...
I had to switch from riding my usual horse, a OTTB I trained named George, to a new project horse, a big fat and fluffy horse named Eddie, recently. He's very inexperienced, but he really does try! He's got a lovely canter, but he doesn't really understand the concept of jumping yet :) Anyway, I was warming him up, just letting him walk around and look at the geese in the fields next to the ring, when I had him move up to a trot and he just started freaking out--bucking, rearing, sidestepping, the whole shebang. I'm still not sure what happened, but he was getting so worked up, I decided to turn him back out and hop on another horse. One of the other girls at the barn had just brought in the barn oldie, named Dewey, and that's who I rode. He was so sweet, through bouncy and stiff from old age. :) Anyway, that's my story!

Re: The Horse and Pony Group

For those who have teenage daughters who are into horses. Is that interest always there, or does it diminish when boys come calling. My youngest daughter is sixteen, and she used to be into horses a lot. She went to summer camps (my wife is camp director at the farm), and she has volunteered, but now the only time she comes to the farm is on Thursdays when I do the garbage. I think the main reason she comes is because she drives the Kubota. And she does say Hi to the horses and ponies before we leave. But that's about the extent of it. When Tatiana asks my wife if we (my wife and I) could come do a birthday party, i.e. pony rides for kids, we usually say yes (unless something else is on the schedule (like me working on Saturdays)), but when we ask my daughter if she wants to come she'll say no, she's busy. Hanging out with friends. Sleeping over on weekends. Not too long ago, she'd ask us if we could go to the farm after church. Just about every Sunday, so we'd go to the farm, see the horses, try not to get our clothes dirty... But not now.

Today my youngest daughter and I were doing our regular farm chores. I thought there would be more garbage considering it was March Break camp, but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

After we were done, we went to see some of the horses. Stephanie jumped the fence, went over to see 'Hi' to some of the horses when she sank in... yes, you guessed it. Her boots sank right in there, and she couldn't get them out, so she pulled out her foot, and her socks got dirty. So she took off her socks, and just walked in that mess with her bare feet. She was covered up to her knees in... can I say it? Horses**t. So I had to take her home first so she could wash up before she could go visit her friends.

I've been up to my boots in horse doo-doo, but not that bad.

Twenty-five days ago? I thought I'd better post something in case someone thinks I'm not working at the farm anymore. Ha ha. Surely you can't be serious. Of course I'm working at the farm. This Easter weekend my wife and I did pony rides on Saturday and today (Monday).

Saturday: Took Tango into the arena. He's a stubborn SOB who takes his sweet time. Walk walk walk stop walk walk stop long walk stop walk... and we are finally in the arena. This guy is also stubborn about getting his bit in his mouth (although today when I was getting him ready for a trail ride he wasn't too bad). I took Tango out all by himself (well, with one girl on his back) and back again. Next, my wife and I had nine kids on three ponies... taking turns that is. And then we used Tango and Sunman for the third one. (This was when my wife suggested we should put bridles on the two horses because the two girls were eight and twelve.)

Today my wife was watching Tatiana's kids while I came later to do a pony ride. Sometimes I wish they would have the details ready... how many kids, how old are they, how many ponies, how long? First I thought it was supposed to be one pony but then two boys showed up so I had to get another pony. Two boys... the humans, that is. The ponies were two girls. Since it was two ponies, my wife helped me lead them around. But it did work out at the end.

And after that I did some cleaning in the 'feed barn'. Horses sure poop a lot.

Hi, I should probably introduce myself. I have a 3 year old green broke Paint/QH named Max that I do H/J and eq. with. He's my first horse, and I love him to pieces. So if I refer to a "Maxiboobearsweetiepiebabycakes", you know who I'm talking about. He's really chill, doesn't have a stock-horsey way of going, and has personal space issues. Not the dangerous kind, but he stalks people and sits his nose on their head or shoulder, and has a strange addiction to attempting to eat helmets. This would be really cute, but he's almost 17 hands tall. I'm pretty sure he still thinks he's a baby; he also has a self-designated nap time whenever he comes in from turnout. In fact, the grooms thought he was colicing because he was laying down so much. He just likes his stall, apparently.

I also own a quarter of a small fluffy pony. Well, technically, it's a mini, but which sounds cuter; mini, or small fluffy pony?

Busy weekend at the farm. My middle daughter (this is the one I least expected to come to the farm) and I went to the farm on Saturday morning and did a pony ride. My wife was at church, helping kids with choir practice so she couldn't come till later so it was up to me to take care of business, as it were. I even took in the money, the first time I had ever done that. We had two pony rides on Saturday and two on Sunday. Sunday my wife and I were both there (we had to head up to the farm right after church (no daughter this time).

More horse work to come. My wife has signed us up to do more pony rides over the next few weeks. Plus, next Monday her Sparks and Brownies group is coming to ride so I'll be helping out.

Oh, yes, the first group this morning? After we were done with the pony rides my wife and I received a $20 tip... each! My wife said she's never received a tip that big.

Sunday I didn't do anything because there were a lot of volunteers there who helped out so I spent most of the time in the van reading my book.
Monday my youngest daughter was there too. She's the one that usually comes out on Thursdays to help me with the garbage (she drives the Kubota), but we needed lots of help because my wife who is a guider had her Sparks and Brownies and the farm, learning about horses and riding them. There were about twenty girls there and we had four horses all tacked up, so they took turns riding and playing games on horseback. The only thing that spoiled it was the rain.
