I, for one, never really gave it a lot of thought but I did check out the sponser's forum and there are a couple of free trials there that look promising. Long story short, I downloaded Scrivener for Windows about a month ago and it really does a great job of organizing things with the least intrusive set of features. If you are working in Word only, it couldn't hurt to have a look at what these programs have to offer. I used to think that if a feather and an inkpot were good enough for Shakespeare and Dumas, then why not me. Now I think that they would have given anything for the conveniences of a word processor. If I am just chugging something out, Word is fine, if I want to outline on cards Movie Magic works well. However, I also downloaded Scrivener for Windows and have worked my way through the tutorial. Seems interesting and it has a screenplay mode and holy crap, it is about 1/10th the price of Movie Magic. The import and export functions seem adequate and I usually have to create folders on my hard drive and in my favorites for reference material and it is nice that I can put all of that into the program instead. I also looked at Pangurd because it is online and would allow access while not at home, but I think I will be doing most of my work at home, so not sure it is really needed. I started an oultine years ago for my story in Movie Magic and will move that over to Scrivener this weekend and flesh it out a bit, OK, a whole lot. I still fall back on Power Writer for creative projects. I only use Word for final formatting and writing web content - to me it's just too - something - business like, maybe. Did try out a new software called My Novel, not bad, but it doesn't have the features of Power Writer. That said tho, if'n I win NaNo this year, I will probably take the Scrivener folks up on their half-price offer. I guess I could rail over the cost difference but at the time I made the investment in Final Draft 8, Scrivener was still a Mac only product that i had never heard of. I like Final Draft a lot for screenwriting, but Scrivener has really impressed with it's ability to work wee without getting in my way. It really is a bargain even at full price when compared FD8 or MM 2000; and I got even FD at a sizable discount through a screenwriting class I took. Hey whatever's free to look at is worth looking at! I haven't tried to move anything of mine into Scrivener yet, let us know how that works out for you. I spent the yesterday taking meeting minutes on Medicaid reform that were more interesting than what I've written so far. Too much set-up, characters feel cliched, fingers itching to edit this crap, if not delete it. So talk me off the ledge, F2K buddies! How do I go on? Keep the 20,000 but essentially start over with "Or maybe it happened like this:"? Or can someone throw me a mother of a plot twist? I'm thinking I need to cut a secondary character, though I really wanted her for book two (in my head, there's a book two, but not if these people don't liven up.) I guess I could introduce her in book 2 and ax her for now. I'd post the synopsis for you, but can't seem to write that, which is clearly a very bad sign for my plot. Here are the key characters: Miri - nineteen year old woman, discovers she's an empathic medium (reads thoughts and sees ghosts - sort of integral to the plot, as is, but I'm willing to go with one or the other of the powers). Right now, at 20,000 words, she's just trying to deal with her newly discovered abilities. Part of her background is that her mother homeschooled her, moved them around, told Miri her dad and his side of the family were all dead (not true), and kept her very sheltered. Mom also had protections in place to deaden her empathic side, This muted all emotions, so Miri doesn't really know who she is or how to act once those protections are gone. Loki - twenty year old punk with attitude problem, lives with his bastard of a father who's a prison guard. Loki is angry at the world, grieving soldier girlfriend killed overseas. He doesn't like Miri, but, of course, is attracted to her. I want this to end up as the love interest, but right now Loki's screaming at me because that's such a damn cliche. George - Miri's uncle, husband to her paternal Aunt Aga, who was an empath. Aga just died. Miri thought all relatives on Dad's side were dead, but ends up at George's. George promised Aga he'd help Miri if she ever showed up, but he's not sure how. Dos - Miri's dad, in prison for murder (but we don't know who at this point. Well I do, but you, dear reader, do not). Miri also does not know he's alive, or that he killed someone. Dos may be a good guy, or a villain. I haven't made up my mind on him yet. Rune - Loki's best friend, helped care for Aga while she was dying. I like the girl, and want Miri to have a friend, but Rune is feeling too damn nice and I think she's dragging the story down. There are various ghosts related to some of the main/secondary characters who also figure into the plot as it stands now. Please? I would LOVE the information. The story is set on a fictional island in Maine. Saeth's part goes like this: Saeth, Guardian of Mosquitoes, member of the Council of Ancients, beloved by all and generally accepted as being the most intelligent being of the universe has been secretly creating viruses to exterminate the People from the face of the earth ever since she failed to bring the Neandrathals to the Land of Yay. Her 100th Neandrathal, Dug, was her BFF and Zip, a she-wolf and Queen of the Wild Ones, was out walking with the new People-us- when a spear was accidentally thrown and killed Dug. Saeth buried him with honors-there is exactly one neandrathal that was buried with flowers scattered over top of him and who was laid on a bed of pine boughs in real life, he's my Dug- ever since then Saeth has worked tirelessly to exterminate us. She's almost succeeded three times-again real life- but alas, the DOGS (Designated Official Greeters) were created and kept us going. For the citizens of Yay- all animals except people, we haven't managed to get 100 of our kind over there yet- she has worked tirelessly to help us by sending one of her Whisperers to give us the answer to every question we have asked. When anyone asks for a solution to a problem a Whisperer is dispatched to give us the answer at our most receptive time, the moment between being awake and being asleep-that's why mosquitoes whine in our ears, they're delivering our answers and are even kind enough to leave a small reminder mark to let us know that our answer has been given so that we can remember it in the morning. But instead of 'helping us' Saeth has really been creating the perfect situation in order to unleash her greatest pathogen yet with the help of her 4th daughter of the apocalypse-the first three being carriers for malaria, fevers and encephalitis. Charles, the dad and field research scientist, is the first victim of the new mosquito borne virus-he's also Kate's best friend-Kate is his daughter and one of the MC's. Rhonwen, the good sister mosquito, is as oblivious to Saeth's real purpose as everyone else but she knows that she's up to something, two of her daughters, the ones that spend the most time with Saeth, aren't quite right. But the rest of Yay considers Rhonwen the evil sister. When Zip was leading our kind out of Africa, it was her offspring that almost killed us off-again in real life. Upon discovering that her offspring were hurting the new People Rhonwen modified them so that they became exclusively nectar drinkers but Saeth saved the two strongest daughters and they keep flying onto egg rafts and laying a few of their infected eggs on them to keep the viruses going. Despite Rhonwen's attempts to explain to everyone in Yay that it is impossible for her offspring to be killing anyone, no one believes her. Hence she has retreated from the world and lives in their Whisperer garden and pond tending the flowers and keeping to herself. All of this was, of course, Saeth's doing but then Saeth is evil. I don't have Rhonwen's story totally figured out yet, but that's what I have so far. So, for Charles- the mosquito scientist- how many traps would he set out for a 200 square mile island? 2 miles wide by 10 miles long? Would it just be the one kind of trap? The island is, of course, where one of Saeth's secret doorways to the Other Side is located, so both Anophenlinae and Culicinae mosquitoes are on the island. Saeth's mate, Kele, is an avid surfer and the three daughters feign interest in surfing so that he keeps building better and better surf boards for them to use to ride the Gulf Stream to get to their appointed sites. They had other secret doorways but Buttercup- Queen of the Tame- and Cap- Master Trainer- built their school for Field Agents right over top of them, making it difficult to use them without being detected by pesky curious pups, kittens, and other offspring. Field agents are the ones assigned to People to try and bring them back to Yay so that we can get our 100 and take our rightful place on the Council of Animals. And how does he test them? I was planning to head down to the Smithsonian Natural History museum to ask but if he was willing to help that would save me the trip this month. Even if he could recommend some books that would be AWESOME! I can tell you a little bit. There are a few different types of traps. Gravid traps are filled with rabbit food that's been soaked in water and left outside for at least a week (oh, so smelly!). There's another type of trap that uses CO2 (dry ice), which is what attracts mosquitoes to humans (so if you're breathing heavy and excreting a lot of CO2, you are especially yummy to the little buggers). Gravid mosquitoes are the pregnant females and they are the ones that feed and can transmit the virus. He wasn't doing the virology work, but I know he knows something about it and it involved grinding their little bodies up and centrifuges. He trapped and speciated (identified species) and also just did counts of how many they trapped. The most effective means of mosquito control is larvaciding, while they're still in the places where the eggs are laid (swamps, stagnant water pools, little pockets of water trapped in holes in trees, bird baths, anything where water sits). Once they've hatched and are adults, you can aerial spray and kill a bunch of them, but then the next round hatches and they're back in a few weeks. He and his colleague also studied overwintering mosquitoes. The ones that don't die off go into diapause, sort of a hibernation state in Fall and winter. He hunted for them in old basements, crypts, tunnels and caves. They actually tried a mark and recapture project, where they put this fluourescent powder on the overwintering mosquitoes, then set traps on the first warm days of spring to see if they could catch them and how far they traveled. Sort of a needle in a haystack type of effort though. I split up a very happily married couple and it did wonders. They get back together eventually, but whilst it lasted I had plenty to write about, lots of drama and emotion. Not chef. Cook at a small pizza/deli, the kind that stays open late and caters to the post-bar/post-party college crowd. There are probably regulars who frequent the place. Your character can sleep in the day if he works nights, probably has just a few people working back in the kitchen with him, getting to joke around while they prepare orders, because those types of places are small. maybe a few extras folks on the counter. Boss might be a little shady, pay him partly on the books and partly under the table. Boss lets him show up late sometimes, because your guy will always do the extra work on the other end and take the extra shift when needed. Another good one - delivery driver for a florist. My husband did this for a number of years. he liked it because the people who worked at the florist were usually characters, and on deliveries, most people were happy to see him when he showed up (except on Valentine's day, when there were always a number of bouquets being sent by a cheater to his beloved. Those flowers generally got thrown back at my husband - no tips!). He'd get to set-up weddings, or deliver flowers for funerals sometimes. Car wash attendant is another suggestion. Lots of time to hang out between washes. Maybe there's a girl in a red car who likes to come by and flirt with him. Or a guy in a red car who likes to come by and flirt with him. Probably used PCR testing (polymerase chain reaction - used to test for many viruses - you can put that in a search engine for more info). As far as traps go, he said first, there wouldn't be many mosquitoes on an Island in the ocean because it would likely be windy. Maybe a few coastal species. So bear that in mind. You might want to move your island inland. As far as where to set traps, you wouldn't set them over the whole island. Just in areas likely to breed - swamps, wetlands, waste-water treatment plants, areas where there might be sewage of some sort (i.e. an outhouse), or standing water. Types of traps: Gravid traps - stinky water in bucket, tube sitting a few inches above the water, net over it. Then there's light traps and resting box traps. You can google image or bing image search these to see some pictures. Include the words CDC in your search - i.e. CDC Gravid Trap and you'll get good results. The good thing about asking my husband about this is that he discovered that the health department published the paper on his research (he left there about four years ago). So his name is on it, since he did the field work, but he didn't have to do the writing. He's on the phone with his former colleague now, laughing about it. Good luck! The cook brother loved to steal Jiffy, so my dad would find him under the wheel of a tire, or swinging from a little noose on his dashboard, or hanging out the car window by his ear. The best was when Jiffy got triple baggied and sunk in the 50 gallon fish tank. Dad put Jiffy in this safe after that. One friend of his loves the story of the time the friend was over and they were hungry. My brother decided to make grilled cheese sandwiches. They were out of butter, so he used peanut butter. As a teen, before he was a cook, he was always doing strange concoctions like that - sometimes they were good, sometimes not. Anyway, he's a big bear of a guy, people (kids and adults) love him. He always falls asleep at family holidays after (and sometimes before) meals, because he's used to the night shift. He wouldn't be a success by today's standard - low wage job, no retirement, not health insurance, a car repair usually means borrowing money - but he's easygoing, happy and well-loved, the most loyal friend (or family member) a person could have. He's the guy who always shows up to help you move. I have changed my mc's job, name, and his personality mid way through. What im wririting in some parts seems more like a detailed outline. He droppped out of college and is a very low key person, a little bit on the lonely side these days. But he really does enjoy his job and sees no reason to quit. His entire family is very sucessful, prestigious jobs, type A (Dad, Mom, brother, sister) so there is always alot of pressure on him to change. Anyway he also has a 13 yo son who is being raised by his exwife and new husband, and the son is very smart and driven (kind of like his family...) Plot ideas: 1. I was going to have the 13 yo son come to live with his dad for the summer, because i thought their differences and conflicts might be interesting to look at. I could not get this part right though. I could not make it seem authentic, it kept coming out all clichey (made up word) and just wrong, so I stopped this story line thinking I would come back to it. I even toyed with the idea of just eliminating the son from the book, Instead, I thought i might try adding a neighbor who MC is either friends with or there is some sort of romantic interest and SHE has a son. 2. In the beginning the MC becomes interested in a woman who is more like his family. MC decides he's getting older, needs to be more responsible and decides to change some things to get with this new love interest and try and fit in w his family. This story line was going ok, but the problem is that it went nowhere. I kept waiting for a good plot twist to form in my mind or some sort of ending or conclusion to come to me, but..... nothing. I do like my mc, he's grown on me, but I need a better story for him! I really feel like keeping my mc, and finding a new storyline or plot. Or should i just tweak what I have. My reason is that it does leaves so much open potential without falling into a common cliche. You could have him work as a short order cook by day and an assassin for a secret government operation by night. Or, he works for the FBI and he's undercover to take down one of the largest drug cartels in Mexico and the United States. That could get interesting, there's so much involved with a cop working undercover.(speaking from experience, My hubby worked undercover for an entire year) Yeah... it's scary and you never know what will happen. There's no way to accurately guess what would happen because the possibilities are endless. ~it's a popular topic and could easily be picked up.... Or, He's really servant of Satan, and he collects souls through the restaurant he's working at. You could take that in so many twist and turns. :D I'm more into Horror and Ghost stories but.... Thank you! My parents think I should write movie scripts over writing novels. But, I am lucky to have a mom that supports anything I write. :) I have a complete outline done for an assassin book, I just can't figure out how to work out all of the details because it's so deep and I don't have time to do the research I need to do. Besides that, this month... I just wanted to write a good juicy ghost story. :) Although, I must admit, what I have written turned out so much differently than I outlined it to be. It's two couples trying to live a normal life in a haunted house that just gets progressively worse every month. The guys see the things and constantly have a rational ideas, where the girls get things on camera and voice recorder. It get's to a point where the MC, Blair doesn't know what's real and what happens only in her head. Tatum has the same problem so they decide to go to the library and county archives. The research leads to some interesting information about the history of the house. Then they talk to a neighbor and what she tells them doesn't match what the library and county archives information. They question the woman why her stories differ from the history. She's lived there since the early sixties. The lady tells them that they should call a medium to come in and see if she could sort the truth from lies. All she does is piss the spirits off and that unfolds into more activity in the house, that gets down right violent. And it builds up until..... :) I wrote in 1st POV, this way the reader doesn't anymore that what Blair tells them as the story unfolds. I THINK I have avoided all of the normal cliches of a ghost story. Just something I did and I'm throwing out there, instead of outlining in a normal outline format... I used a calender and wrote my outline on it. This way all of my duckies sit perfectly in a row and there's no cart before the horses. :) I wish you the best!! Stay Ambitious!!! ~Jess Fri, 18 Nov 2011 11:13:37 -0600 http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/writing-groups-and-clubs/threads/1232?page=4#forum_thread_comment_754240 http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/writing-groups-and-clubs/threads/1232?page=4#forum_thread_comment_754240 laughingpaws Okay, here goes - She falls in love with one of the gladiators- or multiple gladiators - she discovers that her brother has been captured and forced to become a gladiator - after her love/brother/BFF from infanthood is hurt as a gladiator she uses her healing arts and is discovered by the Roman guard who blackmails her to give incredible strength/fighting skills to his favorite gladiator so that he wins tons of money and raises quickly thru the ranks-he is of course a bad guy - same type of thing but the guard is a good guy she heals both the gladiators and the Roman soldiers until they get caught by the bad guy, he brings her into his home to keep his allergies at bay- or something equally as minor- making all of her old friends die or be maimed and suffer, she has to sneak out of the house to try and tend to them - she discovers while she's working a spell that she can influence the outcome of the gladiator games, then her brother/old love shows up in the ring and she helps him along but it has a lot of unintended consequences-he falls in love with her greatest enemy, the roman general brings him into his home to live and they fall in love with one another- Romans weren't that picky- - she can use her powers to influence the gladiator games and her brother/old BFF longs to die but she keeps helping him win and he is upset about that. - she accidentally brings forth a smart aleck demon who runs rampant around the town and actually causes Rome to burn down - she falls in love with the General and it results in lots of self loathing for loving the man who killed her family, then brother shows up in the gladiator ranks, bent on killing the general, she uses her skills to help her brother win, final show down brother and general fight, who does she save? - she loses herself in the Roman overindulgence, while in Rome and all of that, then brother or love show up in gladiator pit and bring her back to her senses, she tries to help them escape, sneaks off to heal them, all while maintaining her cover as a real Roman convert - she works tirelessly to help the -can't remember their name, the ones that successfully fought off the Romans and then they attacked Rome, Berserkers maybe?- only to fall in love with one of the Roman soldiers, but her family is with the tribe who fights the Romans, massive battle, she's exposed, who does she heal, who does she really support? - her old master is captured and forced to fight as a gladiator, her training is only half complete so she has to save him, learning as she goes as she heals him each time, so that she can complete her training, falls in love with the General and a Roman Soldier and the General's sister-again, they weren't picky-her brother ends up as a gladiator fighting her Roman Soldier, her master tells her how to use her powers to increase fighting skill or strength, whatever- and she has to decide who she enhances and who she can't-because there's a limit to her growing power so she can only pick one, meanwhile her master is gravely injured, the general's sister becomes pregnant, during birth she begins to bleed out, the General is back from a campaign and he's severely injured, so with all of her loved ones dying she has to pick which one to save. I saw the same pep letter and in my situation I have chapters 1-10 completely done. They are are strong, hold together, and I love them. Unfortunately, I have 36 chapters in my book. With 10 days left to write them minus Thanksgiving and one or two work days in there. So, tonight I am finalizing my outline for the last 26 chapters-I do it by scenes, approx 6 scenes to a chapter knowing that I'll have to tighten and cut dramatically during the edit- and starting in the morning I'm doing 10-15 minute writing sprints. That's a chapter finished every 1 1/2 hours, 30 minute break/nap, and go on to the next chapter. So I need to put in around 6 hours a day every day until the 30th. At which point I will collapse into an incoherent puddle. BUT, I'm starting at the end and working backwards because the middle part changes the most during re-writes so it's the part that I don't need to be fully conscious to do at this point. I don't know if that helps or not but it's worked for me in the past. THANKS! The decision on length has more to do with what happens in the chapter. It might help to think of them as ministories within the bigger one. Sometimes one scene is so intense, it's best kept separate from the rest as its own chapter. Other times, you'll want a group of related scenes. Seriously, writing this book for the past 4 or 5 years has been my fiction apprenticeship-I was a photojournalist in a previous life. So I spent all of October going through and culling the best parts from all of the other versions, writing a detailed outline to mark the trail and on day 2 of NaNo realized that my villain had a sister. Out goes the outline..and I spend 4 days creating a new one. THEN I get actual paid work and then when I get back to my book, I start off knowing exactly what I'm going to write but something completely different comes out of my fingers. It's truly bizarre. I know it's too long and has too many scenes in each chapter but I want it all down, all of it out of my head and onto the page by the end of the month and then I'm taking December Off. Totally OFF! No book hanging over my head, no "I should be writing" thoughts, I want to be free to do Christmas stuff and for the puppies to arrive and to sleep in and watch bad movies all guilt free. So finishing this book, a seemingly impossible task at the moment, is my Christmas gift to myself. That's the plan at least. Actually, you're not posting your story, but pasting it into a window that only a machine will see as it automatically counts your words. Are there any good ones out there? Did your story turn out the way you wanted it? You seemed to have put a lot at the end there. It's funny like sometimes, it really flows and other times, you feel stuck. I'm doing a historical romance novel, so I had to do a lot of research. I don't know how it'll turn out in the end but I like the story. It's just the knowing how to write it that is kind of tricky. I'll have to start editing. How long does it usually take to edit?
