Tolkien Fans

So who out there is a major Tolkien fan? This group is for you: people who love and appreciate Tolkien's works.

Myself, I've read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit many times--so many I haven't kept track. I've read the Silmarillion at least four times, and rarely find anyone who has read it, which I find unfortunate. The Children of Hurin, Unfinished Tales and many others are also on my list of books I've read, and I have literally dozens of other books by or relating to Tolkien and his works.

My favorite character in LotR is Faramir (with Aragorn, Eowyn and Eomer coming in right behind).

How about you?

I know there are many of us: let's get together and talk Tolkien! :)

I love Pippin, Eowyn, Boromir, and Faramir.

I have no children to name after Tolkien characters and my mom named our last cat Neo (from the Matrix) before I could get to him, but I have a bookshelf full of his stuff!

My favorite LoTR character is probably...oh, let's say Aragorn! But if you asked me tomorrow that my change to Faramir or Pippin or Eomer.

I have repeatedly read, Celtic, and absolutely love the Silmarillion. If I could trade LoTR in for several hundred more pages on the Feanorians and Gondolin I would do it in a heartbeat. *ducks*

My favorite character from that is probably Maedhros, closely followed by and sometimes interchangeable with Tuor and Earendil. Oh, and Celebrimbor. *rambles*...

I've named cats Mithrandir, Tom Bombadil, Arwen etc.

Favorite character from the Silmarillion . . . hmm, hard to choose, there are so many great ones!

For hard-core Tolkien book fans, I recommend Prof. Corey Olsen's free online Tolkien Course--40 MP3 lectures that can be download and listened to while doing misc. chores or whatever. (tolkienprofessor.com) I've really enjoyed them and there are a lot of interesting things he talks about . . .

So, has anyone read anything non-LotR and Hobbit besides the Silmarillion? Say, Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin, the History of Middle-earth series, the Notion Club Papers (one of my favorites), Roverandom, Mr Bliss, Letters from Father Christmas, etc.? Tolkien wrote many things, and I've found all of them to be works of genius!

Oh, and does anyone know that he wanted to have another chapter at the end of LotR, after Sam says "I'm back"? Two different versions of it can be found in "Sauron Defeated", book nine of Christopher Tolkien's History of Middle-earth.

Re: Tolkien Fans

I have neither pets nor children to name after Tolkien characters, but I used to have a computer named Gilraen and an iPod named Glorfindel.

I've been a Tolkien fan for as long as I can remember. My mother was a fan way back during the 'Frodo Lives' days of the '60s/'70s, and I can't remember a time when I didn't know about Middle-earth because of her reading The Hobbit to me and watching the Rankin/Bass cartoon (random fact: my first fictional crush was on the Hobbit cartoon version of Elrond; what a weird little kid I was) and visiting Hobbiton USA (totally tacky roadside attraction in the Redwoods, now closed).

I've read and love pretty much everything, but The Silmarillion is my favourite. I've met plenty of people who have read it, but I find it very rare to find someone who read and loved it. I've heard a lot of "It was so boring!" and "I couldn't keep track of the characters!" I don't get it! The Silmarillion is amazing! It's hard to pick a favourite character, but I really like Finrod. And Maeglin is fascinating.

As for Lord of the Rings, I love Éowyn and Boromir best. Merry's fantastic too.

If you could live anywhere in Middle-earth, where would it be? I'm partial to Rivendell, although I really love the sea and have always wanted to know more about Dol Amroth.

I love Tolkien's works. I'm not as extensively read in his as I'd like to be, but hope to fix that particular problem :)

My favorite character is Haldir. (In college I was greatly tempted by the "Haldir Lives" t-shirts that became so popular after Two Towers came out!) Very close second is Sam and then Faramir. I also love both Eowyn and Eomer.

If I could live in Middle Earth it's a toss-up between Rivendell and Lothlorien. I would also be insanely happy living in Rohan. (I love horses!) And the peaceful side if me loves the idea of living in the Shire. I think I might have to just travel to all of them before settling on any one. ;)

I forgot to add, I do have a snake named Smaug. I wanted to name our twin cats Merry and Pippin, but my mother's name is Mary, so it would have been a bit confusing.

I absolutely love the epilogue that can be found in Sauron Defeated, but I am rather hobbit-centric and would happily live in the Shire. I don't know, or don't remember, why he chose not to include it in LotR proper. Does anyone know?

A couple of months ago i found a rare edition of LOTR with all the books in one. And it's headings were printed in red ink. (That's definately old). It was so amazing to actually sit down and read the book without borrowing it and such, it stil stays on a speccial position on my shelf.

Sad to say though i never got through the extra details at the back, but i do appreciate the masterfullness of Tolkien. Seriously, he put tonnes of effort in crafting his world.

I believe the epilogue was not included because Tolkien was talked out of it by "other people" as his son said, but I think he sort of regretted it, and I wish he'd put it in anyway. It would have been so much better, especially for people who don't want to have to plow through the appendices to find the hints of what happened after. Ah well, at least it's available for those who look for it.

Anyone for Tolkien's scholarship too? As a Classical linguist, I really appreciate the footnotes from other scholars saying something along the lines of, "I just walked down the hall and asked Professor Tolkien about this, and his opinion is that...." I know some of his ideas of epigraphy in Britain, but haven't managed to get my hands on his Beowulf work! I've wanted to read it for years!

It's been far too long since I've read his fiction, but I do love it. My favorite character when I read it was Sam, but that really has been a changing thing over the past twelve years since I first read the books.

On this day, January 3rd, 120 years ago, one of the greatest authors ever in my opinion, was born - J. R. R. Tolkien! The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book, and I love every single other thing he ever wrote. We all owe him a great debt for introducing the world to Middle-earth and all it contains. The Fantasy genre as we know it was defined by him, and I as a Fantasy writer myself, thank him for it. I believe he was a great man who wrote great things, and I always celebrate his birthday on the 3rd of January. A toast! To the Professor! Happy birthday Tolkien! :)

How is it that I haven't found this thread until now? (Oh, right, because I never come in this forum...)

Anyway, I am a HUGE fan of Tolkien. I've read The Hobbit, LOTR, the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and The Children of Hurin, and I know a bit about HoME (though I've never actually read more than skim through the first one. D:)

My favourite character in LOTR is Glorfindel :) Following him is... too many people to count. (Sam, Faramir, Eowyn, Aragorn, etc.) My favourite in the Silmarillion is definitely Feanor, followed by Maedhros, then Maglor, then rest of his sons. Feanorian pride! *waves banner*
I have repeatedly read, Celtic, and absolutely love the Silmarillion. If I could trade LoTR in for several hundred more pages on the Feanorians and Gondolin I would do it in a heartbeat. *ducks*
...BFF.

If I could live in Middle-Earth, I'd choose <strike>Valinor (which isn't even part of ME</strike> ...Nargothrond. It's pretty, and has Finrod (and Celegorm and Curufin ^^). For 3rd-age, I'd choose Rivendell. Lorien is pretty and all, but Rivendell... so many books *_* Plus Glorfindel, Dan and Ro are to die for.
