This forum is where those who are into the paranormal genre in YA, since it's so popular, may come and discuss which is more popular and what they might be writing about, or have opinions on the paranormal creatures they like.

While everyone's doing vampires and werewolves and angels and demons, I decided to do something different.
Outside of NaNo, I write the clique vamp-wolf thing, mixed with the whole coming of age, but for this year's NaNo is a dark and twisted faery story. Yeah, it starts off light-so did my outside of NaNo novel.
But everything i write ends dark.

Man, this is where I belong.

My agent sold my first book in August. It's about a vampire and a zombie falling in love.

My second book is about reapers.

My NaNo novel is about paranormal creatures in general but focuses on an incubus, fae, and angel as main characters.

I don't think I could write anything BUT paranormal. Paranormal is my life blood :p

Vampires here. So far I think mine shall be fairly traditional but they haven't really shown up yet so that may change. I like to keep everything up in the air.

I'm doing a novel based on Faustian works, so I've got demons in mine. I have a guardian angel involved as well as a side character. If I ever get it published and do a sequel, I'll be working vampires into the mix. I already have a cameo from Bram Stoker in my novel, so that should be fun if I ever get there.

I have angels, demons (in particular a sucubus), and nephilim in my novel. Since I got into writing paranormal genre with angels I haven't been able to imagine writing anything else.

I'm doing fairies. I'm not good at making interesting vampires :/ But I still love paranormal stuff. I don't know where fairies came from, but it's working for me so far!

Vampires and were-creatures in this one, with vampires being the main focus. I'm having a lot of fun with it. ^^

I have angels in mine and @ bohemiangrl316 I know what you mean when you say you can't imagine writing anything else. Mine is a trilogy but already I'm wanting even more. :D I used to write vampires and then tried werewolves on for size (a trilogy with only the first 2 written so far..lol) and now I'm at angels. I would try all the others sooner or later. :D

I love writing about angels. I don't know what it is about them, but I just think you can do so much with them and their so interesting to write. My 2009 nano revolved around angels and demons with humans being taken as slaves for demons and angels always trying to protect humans. This novel is quite different but it still features my favorite angel characters. I wish I saw MORE angel novels around, I see a lot of vampire and werewolves but not enough angels for my liking.

Really? I've felt like there are a TON of fallen angel novels out right now...

bohemiangrl316

I see fallen angel novels, but not necessarily involving ANGELS themselves. Even then, they seem to be overshadowed by vampire novels at least in any bookstore I've been in recently.

Hush, Hush series and Fallen (I think that was the first book, but have a faulty memory) are two fairly new series about fallen angels/angels. I seriously love a good angel book, but have a soft place for the fallen - a little bit good, a lot a bit bad. :)

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

I've heard of the Hush, Hush series but haven't had the chance to read it yet as school reading has overrun my life since September with 3 Lit. classes. Fallen was another I heard about that was good. Those, however, were the only two I've heard of and thought sounded truly interesting. I'll have to add them to my "Books To Read After December 21st" list. Once the semester ends I'm going to catch up on everything I've wanted to read for fun all semester.

:D I'm a typical werewolf sorta girl, but I adore shifters as well. And kelpies. Kelpies make me drool :)

This year's Nano is soft sci-fi/paranormal romance between a girl who has to steal life energy "soul" from people to survive, and a cyborg-hound shapeshifter >3

Bohemiangirl - I hear ya! Angels are my paranormal choice - the fallen and the unfallen - and I'm loving it, though I'm not naming them as such - yet. I don't think. I also have a few mortal magician & witches. The whole thing is turning into a beautiful mess of the gothic uncanny and the fairy tale-esque, and that's because of my angels. They're neither good nor bad, can make moral choices (just like humans) and are the heroes of their own stories (just like humans). I like them, very much.

In literary terms, I still think angels as an imaginative source are untapped. They're an interesting meme - like the fae, actually - and are often used in their most conventional forms. But there's so much there to work with, thanks to Gnosticism and such like.

(I should add - I'm staying away from the angel novels until I've finished mine and edited it and done all of the innovation bit. I don't want to borrow other people's ideas, even by accident).

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

Yours sounds interesting. My angels are a bit of both. I have the elder Archangels who were created and born as angels. Then I have humans who have died and become angels. I know religiously most religions would not agree that happens but hey this is fiction not a religious text. However, even if my angels are more traditional, their not perfect and especially not those who were once human. They have views on what they believe in right and best for Heaven, and sometimes it might not be what others agree with. In particular in the beginning the Archangel Michael actually appears to be the bad guy, though he's actually not. He means well, he just sees things in one light, while two of the other angels disagree.

Angels really are a source not many authors have tapped into. I mean, yes there are A LOT of fallen angel stories out there...but not many of those I've seen or heard of have any main characters that are ANGELS. Don't get me wrong I'm excited to see even books about fallen angels, but I'd like to see what people can do with actual angels, not just the fallen.

(Staying away might be good, it'll keep your views fresh.)

aly_blythe
53073 words so far Winner!

I have actual angels in it, too, of course - one is the good guy, the others are the bad guys. Fundamentalist angels, I guess ;) who are doing some very bad things to the fallen.

Religion is the elephant in the room, though, isn't it? I thought I needed to have a whole hierarchy and religious framework but have, luckily, come to the realization it isn't necessary, not in the story I'm telling. I've based it on the gnostic hierarchy of angels and it helps: God isn't God any more, just the Monad, the source of all creation's emanations. When I refer to the God-figure at all - as I will, I'm sure - it'll be as the Source, and I'll leave it at that.

Essentially, though, angels are just the medium through which my (apparently very) twisted imagination can work.

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

Oh wow that sounds cool how you did it, with God as the source. In my last novel I didn't call God, God...I called God the father, when referring to him. The angels called him that. So it wasn't blatant oh it's god, but it was kind of there depending how you read into it. This novel I NEEDED a hierchy and I chose to take 7 of the Archangels and make them the "Archangel Council" for a judgment. I ended up using God, merely because at the time I didn't know how else to work it in, especially because I mentioned the Fallen Angels revolt and Lucifer's favoritism. I put a lot of religious references in anyway, so I figured I might as well. The text itself isn't very religious though, it's just referenced.

Religion definitely seems to be the elephant in the room. The...do you include it, do you not? It's hard with angels especially because most of the time when you research angels the results come up from a religious standpoint.

aly_blythe
53073 words so far Winner!

Yes, and I'm not sure how much religion will actually get into my story... it's far more about choice and about the consequences of our choices. It's just that angels are involved in the choice and the consequence.

Actually, I'll answer my own question now I'm thinking about it. There'll be little or none actual religion; there may be some fleeting references to theology and spirituality.

Angels are cool.

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

Well whether you put it in or not, it sounds cool. I didn't in my last novel, but this novel gave me no choice in a way...or at least I felt that way.

Angels ARE cool.

(Totally a Doctor Who nerd because the moment I saw that I thought "Bow Ties Are Cool" "Fezzes Are Cool" "Stetsons Are Cool")

:grins:

I think it's true to say... Dr Who is cool!

(Another Dr Who nerd here!)

Actually, I've stolen something from Dr Who... angels may be cool, but stone angels (of the weeping variety) are just plain creepy. So I'm afraid I have stone angels in my novel too!

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

I think I already love your novel just for that factor. Doctor Who ftw! As CREEPY as weeping angels are...I think they are by far my favorite monsters of the show. I'd feel too bad adding stone angels to my novel though because I feel like I'd def. def. be stealing. I just think that was a genius idea and as an angel lover I STILL get freaked out sometimes seeing larger angel statues lol.

aly_blythe
53073 words so far Winner!

I *loved* the original weeping angels episode... it's still one of my favourites ever!

As to stealing them, well sure... :D Though, in actuality, they're simply stone angel statues: they don't move or actually do anything. More of them do appear throughout the story, though... there's an actual real plot reason why they're there. So it's not as steal-y as it seems!

But, to repeat your main point (and because it can't be said enough): Dr Who ftw!

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

I loved BOTH the original and Matt Smith's weeping angels eps. I actually think they were creepier in Matt smith's because instead of just transporting someone back in time and feeding on the time energy they actually killed and there were so many of them. It was like OH WHOA MULTIPLYING!

Anyway, it sounds cool to have them in your plot, regardless. And it def. isn't stealing or close to it if your just using stone statues. :D Props to you! Your novel definitely sounds interesting from the little I've heard.

Am I the only one writing a guardian angel? I've seen oodles of fallen angels but can't recall any guardian angels that I've seen or read about as significant characters.

I'm pretty much keeping religion out of my story, and my angel character serves the human she chooses to protect of her own free will. God doesn't come into it and there's no mention of any angel hierarchy. I really just wanted the symbolism of having a counterpart to the main demon character in my story. It also gave me an excuse to write a really fun over the top sword duel between the two, stemming from an argument over ballroom dancing of all things.

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

I have a different novel that I put aside for this one that will actually feature younger angels being trained as guardian angels. Then my MC is going to commit the absolute sin of all guardian angels, which might seem cliche, and fall in love with the one she is protecting. It may sound cliche but there's a lot of other factors in there that should keep it from being as such.

I love angels in general, regardless of what kind. Writing about a guardian angel as you are sounds awesome. I'd be interested to see how it pans out for you. Two of my angels are sort of serving as protectors to my MC and his twin brother, but their not ACTUALLY guardian angels as assigned. They have just chosen to take on the role of protectors and to try to nsure that he makes the right choices.

My novel isn't necessarily religious. I didn't PLAN on using God in it at all, even in mentions, but it got to a point where I needed to reference God and the revolt of Lucifer, so I didn't have a choice. The novel isn't centralized around that though and there's a lot of things that stray from the typical. I just based my angels around a lot of the religious beliefs/mythology I needed to for my purpose.

My book involves a guardian angel too. I am also trying to keep religion out of story as much as possible.

I'm writing about a Guardian angel! I'm keeping religion and God out of it as well, because I feel like that would be too much for me to write my first time in Nano. My Guardian is an innocent protective angel that needs to take a vessel in order to protect his ward and he takes the vessel of her long-time crush :D

It's been going so well, but now I'm like... stuck, haha. I've been trying to figure out what's going on with the step-dad being possessed by a demon and it's just all going to hell (pun intended) so hopefully that can be wrapped up soon!

Mine is about a tribe of Therians (shape-shifters) in the desert in Egypt. ^^ I'm pretty excited about it but also having slight trouble... Fighting desperately against YA cliches, of which there are many. It think the most cliche thing is that my MC doesn't think much of herself, though I think that that is realistic as well. She's 17, and at least from my experience there aren't many 17 year olds that are completely at peace with their body image. Her main issue with herself is her height (which is actually taken from myself, though she's self conscious because she's really short and for me, it's because I'm really tall.) There's nothing about high school, and I don't plan on any mention of true love, though there IS a romantic interest.

Mine is a creation of my own. I do have hell hounds and demons but my MC is a Rainbow Weaver. She is able to weave ancient spells that bring about both good and bad luck. I lost most of what I had already written when my laptop got destroyed by a can of soda so I have to start over but that's ok as I was not very happy with what I had so far. It is more in the genre of new adult than young adult. Also I am thinking of doing a love triangle however doing a big twist and have it be girl, girl, boy. And no not two girls after one boy but rather one girl and one boy after the MC. Since college is a big time for people to explore their sexuality having a bisexual character would fit in with that. The only problem is I don't want it to turn into it being all about that. I just want it to be a fact. I haven't fully decided yet as I know some people are still very homophobic

Subaru
57365 words so far Winner!

@mommywantstoread: Go for it!! Homophobic or not, people don't have to read it if they don't want to. If it isn't going to be the main focus than it shouldn't matter. Besides having that as minor subplot is good. :D Write what you want to write and don't worry too much about what other people want to read in a book.

bohemiangrl316
59442 words so far Winner!

Hey, don't worry about what people will think about the bisexuality. I think it is fitting especially when it comes to college age. I had one of my angels bisexual in my last novel, it wasn't the theme and it wasn't making a statement, it just happened. There were some who read my novel and enjoyed it but complained about making two male angels get together, but quite frankly it wasn't their business or choice. Don't worry about others, do what you want to do and what flows for you.

My main character has become a vampire (it's in her genes) at the age of 15 and just found out her teen-angst years and youthful good looks are going to last about 100 years. The problem I had getting started is that her grandmother (Mom didn't become a vamp and can't be in on the secret) arrived from France to teach her the ropes. I spent a few hours of the first few days of NaNo in the Google translator finding French phrases. I finally started a glossary of French terms that I tacked on to my outline. Granny is a couple of hundred years old and has control issues. My protag is a modern gal with a sassy mouth.

I'm writing my novel that's mainly surrounded on vampires and angels, but has vampire-hybrids, werewolves, were-panthers, anything that's Were, and mortals. It's set in a universe where the Underworld and the Mortal World coexist. My protagonist is a very beautiful vampire princess who must find out who's killing young girls (who are her cousins) from her two powerful families divided because her parents' divorce. There is romance in it, along with some butt-kicking action with guns and swords. The main love interest (no, he's not mortal but something different unlike any other) is the ultimate bad-boy and every girl's dreams. It's about story about a love that's dangerous and deadly, but destined to come true that not even the Gods can stop to prevent it.

I'm doing my book on a self-created paranormal creature- the Adamini (it means one with the earth in some language).

Basically, it's a group of about fourty kids with varying extremes of this power who can feel all the earth feels. Be that the sounds, the stomping of feet, the rainfall, the snowflakes, the cold, the warm, etc.

My story follows a girl with the highest extreme of the Adamini power.^.^ It's been really fun to write.

Werewolf freak here! My nano being part of a series has werewolves, vampires and warlocks. The protagonist is a werewolf but a sub-species called a Makulay Lycan - Makulay means colourful in Fillipino I think and Lycan is short for lycanthrope which means werewolf. Makulays have odd coloured fur, a stronger connection to their wolf side and emotional connections with people they love. My nano practically follows my MC as she discovers what she is, learns to survive and tries to stop a bunch of hunters from killing everything in the forest. It involves a vampire but mostly its just werewolves, makulays and humans. Warlocks are only mentioned which is sad because I like writing about my warlocks.

I'm writing about vampires, but they're completely different from the traditional kind- although not in the sparkly, oh-so-hot kind of way. Do you think people who are sick of the glorified versions of vampires these days be prejudiced against it?
