Synopsis

Annabel's best friend, Samantha, killed herself last spring and now, a few months later, Samantha's brother contacts Annabel again...with Sam's diary. She agrees to spend a day diving into the diary, which means remembering the times the three of them shared, some painful, some wonderful, and all of them leading up to one crucial moment: the instant that Samantha committed suicide.

Excerpt

The screen says Caleb Nelson.

This is it. Do I answer, or do I let it go to voicemail? If I answer, it could turn out that he just wants to torment me about Sam. If I don’t…I could be missing out on something crucial. Decisions, decisions…

I answer. “Hey.” Casual, cool, calm, collected…pathetic. So I add to it. Make it more Annabel-like. “Annabel’s suicide prevention line, how may I help you?” Why did I say that?

“Oh, Anna…I missed hearing your voice…” he says wistfully.

“I thought you wanted to tell me about Sam,” I remind him.

“I’m getting there…I’ve really missed you, Annabel.” He’s so…so…sincere…

I almost say I’ve missed you too…but I just can’t. Something’s wrong with my voice. Caleb whispers, “I have her diary. Meet me tomorrow at the house and I’ll show you.”
