"The girl in the door way stared down in horror at the woman who lay bleeding a few feet in front of her. I could tell you every motion before it happened. Her involuntary step forward. The man, with his cutlass still drawn, whipping around to face her. Her fear as she stumbled back and almost fell before turning to run.
I watched him take chase and chose not to follow. Instead I gazed down at the woman below. I didn't know if she was still alive at this point. The thought bothered me sometimes but I knew there was nothing I could do about it either way. There was no way to save her."
